This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last great movie about WWII in the modern era was "Saving Private Ryan" and in my opinion this movie joins that elite company.

Nolan's attention to detail is present and up to its usual high standard, but what he also captured was the sense of isolation of those trapped Soldiers. They were trapped on a beach, surrounded by an enemy who was seemingly attacking at will, leaving not a single safe place to hide--not even the ships coming to rescue them. Such situations push men to their limits, showing their true character, and such character wasn't always good.

I serve in my country's armed forces and I have deployed into harm's way so I think that made me more sensitive that these men may have been Soldiers but they were still people doing whatever they could to survive such desperate times.

I will be very surprised if this movie is forgotten come award season.

Like Rogue One, it sacrifices character for spectacle. But luckily, it succeeds on every level of the word "spectacle". Christopher Nolan's war epic is extremely intense, with by far the best war action set pieces ever put to cinema.

No film is perfect, but to my mind this one achieves nearly everything that it set outs to do.

No plot? Who said that? Whatever the case, the story that is told is gripping and well worth the effort to understand apparent tangles - and the criss-crossing time line of the the major 'stories', 'land', 'sea' and 'air' is even very, very effective (for many reasons, like the chaos of the whole situation).

No character development? Who said that? We got to know a few of the many individuals thrown into the chaos of the collapse and chaos. Just right for what the film was trying to do. Our 'getting to know them' happened largely through all the crazy (terrible) events they go through.

Having grown up in the 70s when war films were a staple in a way they aren't now, and having watched a lot, I can honestly say no film before has made such an impression on me about the dreadful experience of war suffered by the mostly young participants, about how they experienced it, and how certain attractive values like decency and courage shine out in ordinary people who are not heroes in the usual cinematic sense.

There are many other great films that hit a similar spot and do a similarly excellent job, like Battle of Britain or, for another time and place, Platoon or Full Metal Jacket, but this one takes a slightly different approach... and pulls it off, just like they did in their own way.

The cinematography is just too beautiful to be missed, whether you're a movie buff or not. The Magical Duo of Nolan & Zimmer just seem to get better with every release. The culmination of this Nolan-Zimmer masterpiece is a beautifully captured and composed film that leaves us content with what we've just seen. Nolan's ideology of minimal dialogues lets the action do the talking and boy does it do it impeccably. The Soundtrack carries the movie forward and is very apt with each scenario. In conclusion, this a MUST WATCH with a sui generis approach to a War-Drama-Thriller that will leave you wanting for more. Expand

Gone are nationalistic overtones, standardized Hollywood glorification of combat, or character-focused melodrama. In their place, we have a film which attempts to rendition the evacuation at Dunkirk in a scope which does it justice. Nolan does away entirely with the tropes that we expect from war films. There's no dramatic music, no catchy one-liners, or attempts to portray the characters as anything but the actual humans they are. This is not your favorite Spielberg movie or series, but Dunkirk manages to come away from that comparison no worse for wear. Where Spielberg wants to portray the "greatest generation," and connect you emotionally to their triumphs and tribulations. He wants you to understand the characters, and to ultimately feel good about it. Pride, admiration, maybe envy. Nolan doesn't care if the audience feels good about what happens in the process of the evacuation at Dunkirk. There is, after all, very little to feel good about over the course of the movie whatsoever. There are no moralistic triumphs, no poignant dialogue, nothing that draws audiences in with conventional war films. Nobody beats back the Hun menace. Dunkirk, after all, does not depict a military victory, as most war films tend to. What Nolan gives us with Dunkirk is the truth. It's a fundamentally honest film. If you walked away from the movie feeling drained -- as I did -- well, that means you understood the gravity of the subject matter, and connected it to reality. In a meta sense, this is extremely unconventional for film as a medium, but its efficacy in imparting you this second-hand experience of what it was like at Dunkirk speaks to its greatest triumph. Cinema can be used to make audiences feel good, but what Nolan explores with Dunkirk is the usage of cinema to affect viewers in a different direction, and to this end it was stunningly successful. Its visceral depiction of combat lets audiences discover the small triumphs of humanity organically, rather than having it force-fed to them under blaring trumpets and string sections. What we see at the end of Dunkirk is not a triumph of a political viewpoint or nationalistic pride, but instead a triumph of the human spirit. Expand

So with that out of the way, how is Dunkirk? Well, to put it simply, it's EPIC. It's a beautifully shot, amazingly scored (GO ZIMMER) and perfectly directed by Christopher Nolan. Weirdly enough, unlike Inception or Interstellar, Nolan doesn't bother with too much dialogue here, and instead focuses purly on the action--and HOW GLORIOUS IT IS. Everything is practical and feels very real, which is perfect for a movie trying to show the TERROR of war. Not the HORROR. Now while I can praise this movie and call it perfect, it is slightly flawed. The lack of real character development might upset some, but then again this is a realistic take on war and in war soldiers don't usually talk about themselves in the middle of gunfire. Also the editing does get a bit weird at some points, jumping from different points in time, which will take you out of the experience. Lastly, people were expecting the violence to be over-the-top like in Saving Private Ryan and it is not, so if you want that, this ain't your movie. So in all, I recommend Dunkirk proudly, 'cause it's worth your time. Watch it, then watch it again. Expand

The auteur himself, Nolan, has devised a film in an anarchic way as to generate the true story of Dunkirk and deserves Academy Award nominations in all of the categories probable: will he finally receive the Best Director award?

The 330,000 Allied soldiers, who languished on the beaches of Dunkirk, endeavoured to leave the beaches - and they're unremitting masquerade was the catalyst for their deliverance. The picture itself, irrefutably, alludes to the notion that the war was filled with unknown faces, who faced a nefarious crisis; and, the volatility of war, such as death, despondency or hope.

This film is one of the best films I have seen - if not, the best - and its realism and acute nature offers a rigorous outlook of the events that ensued during World War II.

Knowing of their family members appearance in a movie called Dunkirk is a must know. After the first 10 minutes thought I that I am watching a low cost, amateur movie in a cheap German attempt to copy Hollywood greatness. Then I started counting the actors who all resemble a famous international actor and recognised that they are all family members. At the end was I the low cost amateur watcher trying to copy Hollywood greatness as a consumer. Don't listen to negative reviews of this movie. Alone on an intelligence level and the actor placement is this a must see movie. Which obviously, a view viewers did not get, considering their negative review. Then back to the movie itself. The scenes are nearly all of an immense emotional, dramatic and moral aspect that will stay in mind, they are as thrilling as well as realistic possible in case someone would end in a similar war or conflict position as a soldier. I would nearly say that I had once or twice the feeling that the movie sends an anti war message above everything else, which depends on someones attitude related to war. I personally see war as sometimes necessary to sustain our values and virtues, not to mention for the protection of our freedom. I think that the anti war message was just my emotional reaction due to the perception and how I might feel if I would have been in the position of one of the soldiers. The art and the spirit of this movie is unique and hard to describe. At the end have I not just lifted psychological childhood traumas but got my faith and hope in Hollywood sealed and locked. Expand

The film is alsoThere is little doubt that Dunkirk is an absolutely beautiful movie and a film fanatic's dream. The film is superbly shot, has masterful and powerful sound mixing, and features a fantastic soundtrack from Hans Zimmer. The film is also well-acted, although dialogue is minimal. The action is gripping and entertaining, while the stakes of entire invasion are insanely high. Additionally, I loved the fact that the story follows an abnormal but intriguing plot structure (it is divided in three parts: land, sea, and air, all with different time frames).

What prevents this film from being a masterpiece that critics claim it is are two aspects. The first is that there is no character development because it does not follow any individual character, which is new and emphasizes the terror of the war over drama, for sure, but takes out some of the individual stakes usually found in great films. The second part is the confusing timeline. While I wasn't confused, the people I saw it with were, because of the way its cut, it could make it complex understanding what's going on and when if you weren't paying attention early on.

While those two cons hold the film back from being a masterpiece, this film is beautiful, fun, and engaging. Absolutely worth seeing, ESPECIALLY IN IMAX.

The first truly great film of 2017, Dunkirk is a return to the top of the filmmaking world for director Christopher Nolan after his last two efforts failed to rise to the stellar levels of his past works. In Dunkirk, Nolan has made a filmThe first truly great film of 2017, Dunkirk is a return to the top of the filmmaking world for director Christopher Nolan after his last two efforts failed to rise to the stellar levels of his past works. In Dunkirk, Nolan has made a film that is artistically challenging, possesses great cinematic merit, is accessible to a wide audience, and is a box office success. Not since the prime of Steven Spielberg or James Cameron has a filmmaker been better able to turn their works into ones that are both must-watch spectacles accepted by mass audiences and cinematic achievements. Though praising Nolan has become somewhat faux pas amongst cinephiles, those who deny that Nolan is one of the best working directors today are perhaps lost in the hype surrounding his works. With his latest effort, Nolan rises to the challenge set before him by film lovers to become more than just an entertaining director of great films, but flawed, works. In a stripped down celebration of human will, Dunkirk is perhaps the finest artistic achievement of Nolan's career of consistent success.

Ever since filmmaking became an accepted piece of artistic expression, war films have been a mainstay. Whether it is All Quiet on the Western Front, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Paths of Glory, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, or any number of other greatly celebrated works, war films often prove to be the greatest challenge of its filmmakers' careers. Forged in the blood of the fallen, attempts to build characters amidst the sea of carnage, and trying to make a universal statement about anything, the genre has its share of master works, imitators, and misfires. While the 21st Century has had its fair share of strong war films, none have quite risen to the level of being the definitive war film of the era until Dunkirk. Stepping away from the brutal carnage and character-driven nature of many great war films, Nolan takes a page out of Terrence Malick's book in how to make a war film: capture its essence. Focusing on character development and carnage in equal measure proves to be the undoing of far too many war films with not enough screentime to go around. So, like Malick, Nolan seeks to capture the feeling and experience of being at the Dunkirk evacuation through the stories of those on the land, in the sea, and flying in the air. Names are never mentioned. Dialogue is sparce. Characters are paper thin. Yet, through this work, Nolan manages to silently and loudly strike at the very essence of what it is to be human.

Perhaps no film has better used its IMAX capabilities than Dunkirk, becoming the Avatar of IMAX cinema. With bombs dropping all around, men yelling in the distance, rifles firing, and the ominous hum of German fighter planes in the distance, Dunkirk is a truly immersive experience that makes the audience more than a spectator. It turns us into a participant. The struggles of the characters to reach England and escape from soon-to-be German-held territory in France needs no character development or long scenes of backstory to make us sympathetic for the characters. Instead, it forges a brotherhood found only in the trenches, emblazoned in a way that only the unity of shared experience can conjure. By simulating the feeling of being surrounded from all sides, Nolan makes us root for anybody his camera finds. Their names are inconsequential and who they are has no impact. We root for them not because the film tells us to, but because we feel a sense of unity and brotherhood with these men. These becomes our boys. Our friends. Our brothers. To watch them suffer and die is to lose a part of ourselves. To save them and watch them reach the British shore is a cause not just for celebration, but unabashed jubilation. In creating this feeling, Dunkirk is a film that feels like no other, casting aside individuality and focus on developing single characters in favor of creating familiarity in the entirety of the British forces.

A slimmed down script that chooses its words carefully certainly bolsters this, as the film is devoid of exposition and character development of any type. Words come at a premium and, unlike in his lesser works, Nolan ensures no word is out of place. Every time a character opens their mouth to speak, those words and their impact is felt due to the rarity of speech in the film. It is for this reason that Dunkirk is best viewed as an experience. In line with Nolan's attempts to drop the audience in Dunkirk and give them the lay of the land, historical details are a rarity. Conversations about the battle's role in the war, how disposable these men are to the British, and the current state of affairs in the war are kept to a minimum. As such, this is not a film to educate. While many war films seek to have a cohesive narrative that explains the events of the war, Dunkirk does no such thing. Nolan never flirts with this possibility, nor embraces it at all.

The film kicks off with a bang, and whether it's in a little street, or out on the shore, the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Then, throughout all its sequences, it details the fight for survival, and the cruelty of the World War in true war-movie fashion. Some scenes are definitely gonna have you hyperventilating from stress, and the performance of the whole ensemble cast is absolutely beautiful. Merging the astonishing visuals, with the emotions-filled score is a huge plus point. Last, but not least, the screenplay writing turns out to be very creative, depicting three independent, but later overlapping plots. GENIUS!
In conclusion, 'Dunkirk' is easily the best movie released this summer, and watching it was a real treat, for both the eye and the heart.

He was the "mastermind" behind the appalling slaughter of 50,000 British armed servicemen in 1915 at Gallipoli, on the tip of the Turkish side of the Dardanelles, a narrow channel that links the Mediterranean and Black Seas. They were trapped by Ottoman forces on a tiny spit of beach and could not advance but only be picked off like clay pigeons, and Churchill flatly ignored the Navy's pleas to withdraw and criticized them even after the horrible death toll, preferring to stay even longer. So it doesn't surprise me he was responsible for this terrible strategy that fortunately did not have the cataclysmic results. No, Churchill instead appealed to the citizenry to go to a French beach under heavy Luftwaffe and submarine attack to rescue 300,000 British, French and Belgian soldiers trapped like sitting ducks waiting to withdraw from the Nazi blitzkrieg which in early 1940 was unstoppable. The movie "Dunkirk" is a fine representation of the events of this heroic effort by civilians with no arms to defend themselves or the soldiers they ferried back to Britain under heavy air attack. It is not a remake of "Saving Private Ryan", nor is it nearly as shocking. The film focuses on several things going on simultaneously, and does a remarkable job of capturing the danger and again, heroism of people who should not have had to risk their lives because Churchill was once again behaving like a buffoon. No mention of his piss poor judgment is made here, but as a factor in the real life evacuation, it's a detail that can't be ignored. Only a mention of getting one destroyer at a time is brought up, and is only briefly criticized, but that's a minor point. The only top name actor is Tom Hardy, whom we only see through flying goggles right up to the movie's conclusion, but he still manages to be his usual stellar self. The cinematography is excellent and the story is moving. This doesn't involve gore, or long drawn out scenes of attacks and defense, although enough is there to tell the story properly. Otherwise, "Dunkirk" is a fine movie about a tale of heroes that not many people outside WWII history buffs may be aware even happened. Expand

I was a tad bit disappointed because something was missing from the movie. I absolutely loved the direction. Nolan shines here and arguably, it's all in his court this time because there is no script to the movie. It's all about how he has portrayed the events through his perspective. I loved the BGM, which is obvious when Hans Zimmer is involved. I loved the acts; so believable. even Harry Styles, a singer gave a flawless act, now that's good direction. I loved the cinematography. Those grand shots with that epic score was phenomenal. I loved the climax scene. It gives you goosebumps literally. I loved how it does not involve back stories of characters, those blood boiling dialogues, war strategies, lead characters coming out like hero or the melodrama that is common with war movies. It is about the rescue and that's what you get to see. Loved his narration in three different perspectives. But still, I missed something. Expand

Powerful imagery and emotional symbolism made one almost weep, because the scope of this war-epic is phenomenally crafted. It’s a dark film for sure, but it serves as a glimpse of light over and over, with a forever returning theme of truthfulness to humanity. This, combined with the realism and empathetic feel to the setting that C Nolan masterfully has achieved – will make even the dullest being emotional.

Dunkirk is very different from Nolan’s previous achievements, mainly due to the very lack of character inside through dialogs. But, amazingly, we can still relate and understand their thinking through the surreal events and clever filmmaking. The scope is real. You feel the seriousness. You feel trapped, just like the young soldiers. This is done almost without any dialogs. The silence between the characters says it all. The ones that stand out from the pack of men are Commander Bolton, Mr. Dawson and Tommy; this is where most of the focus lies and where we get most character depth. The non-linear structure helped with this, it almost trapped the audience in a loop with different perspectives on the event of Dunkirk. And the whole movie is all about the event, not the specific characters. You feel like you’re in it so you care for the situation and the characters, even though you might not remember their names fully. All of this is very rare and not often seen on film. It really works in the film’s favor, and yes even more inside to characters could never hurt a film like this one. But this isn’t a flaw in this film. To relate to characters in this extent with so little talking – is an Oscar-worthy achievement.

To follow these characters in Dunkirk is an exhausting and adrenaline-packed experience with realistic action that you will not question. The realism is stunningly shaped. It might be one of my most surreal film experiences ever. Hans Zimmer’s score boosted the experience by tenfold, it got this “ticking” feel to it, almost like a heart beating faster and faster throughout the film – Zimmer is a propulsive force that never stops to amaze. The camerawork is just as stunning; you fly like an aircraft and feel the full gravity of the situation! It’s a smooth, stylish and artistic direction from C Nolan and ‘Interstellar’ cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema.

Some minor flaws do exist. The action is at a few places very identical as to what already has been seen in previous scenes, so it took the “wow-feel” down a bit. Some individuals will without any doubt attack the “too realistic” WW2 feel, because it’s not bold enough for them. But to create this movie isn’t about being bold. It’s about creating something real. And it is, very!

It’s an epic experience filled with realism but also small acts of heroism, kindness and forgiveness. Dunkirk is as action-packed as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, and stunningly realistic as ‘Saving Private Ryan’ but with a bigger slam to it. It reveals the true nature of war, the men behind it and what the bigger picture of it can be.
Dunkirk is a visual and emotional experience that will take the gasp out of you. Period.

A film that has an interesting narrative structure that doesn't hold your hand to try explain the chronology. The film is tense, largely in due part to Hans Zimmers score but Nolans directing here is incredible, some truly breathtaking scenes and sequences. The script struggles at times and I found "The Sea" storyline the least effective (decent payoff for the end though) but everything else is incredibly made. So much visual storytelling and atmosphere, with hardly any dialogue to propel the movie forward. Kenneth Brannahs character is pointless admittedly, just being paid to walk up and down a promenade and spout out things about trying to get home but still despite this films few minor shortcomings overall the whole payoff is amazing. Great ending too, when you finally hear that stopwatch stop ticking you finally release the tension that you've built up from start to end over the movie. A must watch for sure, and even better in IMAX. Expand

Nolan in the beautifully directed Dunkirk wastes no time at all getting to the heart of what he believes truely matters in a war film and that is war itself in a mature film that finally treats the audience as intelligent people by not wasting time with characters who droll on about how bad the war is (which isnt always as a bad thing) but instead cutting the proberbial bullshi*t and giving the audience three intense perspective from air, sea and land as Nolan illustrates how things move from bad to much worse.

Now in this review im not really going to talk about the acting in the film, because as a far as character goes there isnt much, which is perfect in the case of this film, hell some characters who last throughout the entire film are nameless. By not creating individual identities for each of these character they ultimately become blank templates for the audience to latch their own personalities onto, which is great because you feel every heart drop, every pound of terror becuase you do not know what is going to happen next.

The writing in this film is of a gold standard. When finishing a film im always quick to point out stupid decisions made by characters in a film, from walking straight into death to straight up making the most baffling choices possible because plot. However Dunkirk is great in creating rational decisions in an otherwise irrational world, for example people wanting to stay above deck so they dont drown when their boat is sunk by german u-boats. This greatly helps the progression of the plot as i can connect more so with the situation at dunkirk as a whole rather then a few people who were at dunkirk.

Working hand in hand with stunning visuals is the soundtack by hanz zimmer whose eary music deliever on building a tension filled atmosphere in which from the first beat we can tell something is going to go terribly wrong before the threats comes into focus serving as a testiment to great filmaking of the 21st century. Practical effects do not go unnoticed too with a lack of CGI serving a refreshing idea that helps deleiever both scope and realism to a war genre that has been constantly oversatuated with special effect to make war look as awsome as possible.

Go see dunkirk if you are a lover of history or a lover of film and you will not be disapointed.

"Home."

You can love, hate or call him overrated all you want, but you've got to give respect to Christopher Nolan for going this old school. Nothing like cardboard props for background soldiers, inspired by the silence films era with little dialogue, and going full practical. The attention to details with scope and intensity making the overall experience harsh, but masterfully well made. Nolan has made something extraordinary and proven why he's the best living film maker working today. All of his movies have this grand scale to it, but never feels hollow. Watching "Dunkirk" on the IMAX screen was such a overwhelming and frightening experience, but perfectly captures the terror of war those men faced. It got me pretty emotional towards the end. Gunshots sound like actual gunshots and the sound of bomber planes are like something out of a horror film. Every bullet that whizzed by made everyone in the cinema flinch (including me). It's one of the best movies I've seen so far this year. I would go as far to say it's the best war film in recent years & Nolan filmography.

My ears are still ringing from it, as I couldn't hear all that well after it ended.

The cinematography, the sound, writing, and direction are on so many levels of amazing. With Han Zimmer score being his best work yet. Being both phenomenal and hunting, leaving me cold at times. It's no surprise all the tense parts are through Hans score who puts weight to these difficult moments in the movie. And it's only the sound of a ticking watch. I've found new respect for Harry Styles after this. Because he actually delivered a pretty good performance. Very impressive since it's he's first role and had a lot of screen time than I expected. Same thing with Fionn Whitehead, who's plays another young solider was also fantastic. The rest of the cast like: Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy were all terrific. Not a weak performance in the movie. Now people have been complaining about the lack of information with these characters or no real main character to feel for them. I really don't think these people understand that isn't the point of the film. You understand these characters just by actions and decisions. All of this is based on how they act in a situation. No corny or cliché dialogue. It's visual story telling at it's finest. No has time talk about their back story or how they need to get back home to their wife and kids. The time is ticking, the enemy is getting closer, and your stuck with complete strangers on foreign land. The film doesn't have protagonist and antagonist.

You never see the Germans in person, just bomber planes. It makes they presence more scary and tense every time another attack happens. Overall Rating: Please do yourself a favor and see this in IMAX. It really adds to the experience.

He's pretty much that good. I think this movie is one of his bests. I was a little confused about the run time when I first saw it (106 minutes) being this is a huge historical event, but now I understand. The entire movie from the opening shot is no stop action and the movie focuses more on the actual event than the build up and huge speeches from brave men. The movie was very enjoyable and its loud and thrilling as well. The score is superb and Hans Zimmer and Nolan always seem to work beautifully with each other. The dog fights are intense and it's no Hollywood dogfights with loud explosions and blaring gunfire no its real gritty realistic action. The movie doesn't have a lot of dialogue, but that is to be expected. During an event like this you aren't gonna be sitting around chatting about every day things, your gonna be frighten, scared and shocked of the situation. The one thing about the movie that does lack is the character development, which there is practically none. I understand though because like I said it's more about the event and not the build up. There are just brave men stuck in a bad situation. All in all Nolan gives us another great movie that everyone should see ion the big screen. Expand

Christopher Nolan's ode is a cutting-edge gem of technical art. Nolan is one of the almost non-existent filmmakers who keep active excitement with every new release, in this way, three years after his last work, he raises a love letter to warChristopher Nolan's ode is a cutting-edge gem of technical art. Nolan is one of the almost non-existent filmmakers who keep active excitement with every new release, in this way, three years after his last work, he raises a love letter to war cinema, a mega-production that highlights, in capital letters, an experience that gets by without dialogues, even episodically. Narratively, it's his film less cerebral and ambitious among a gold catalog led by "Interstellar" and "Inception", however, from the beginning, the story feels warm in its coldness, he assiduously introduces us into the heartless event. Being a learned man in the field of selection of tones and objectives for his psychological stories, his greatest strength lies in his form of making movies, here, Nolan displays a new record, one easier to keep pace: Narration in pictures.

The first scene is the best letter of presentation, which will serve as a pattern, for a film imparting intensity. The movie conjures up superlative landscapes, the opening sequence is the entrance of a superb artistic hypnosis, a display of magnificent frames strengthened by a majestic 70 mm and IMAX cameras, the colors and shadows explicit in pictures are which lead the story by far. Functional aerial shots from unsuspected angles, explosions, and gunshots piercing our senses, respectful and quasi-negligible digital effects that ratify the commitment to turn a movie ticket into an absolute visceral experience. Clearly, Nolan film would not be exempt from allegories and metaphors through images; the grayish scum brought by the strong tide is a synonym of human filth, the framing of the soldier taking off his attire and running to death on his own, portraying defeat and pride, the corpses that are buried by snorting wind, the endless lines of men in pursuit of "salvation", the palette of blues and greens from the scene where soldiers contemplate an imminent attack, the three men looking at nowhere, the corpses returning to the shore, the covenant between two men burying one innocent under rough sand or the perfect framings of Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy are dreamy compositions that speak through colors, shadows, lighting and setting, a master class of cinematography and photography. The seventh art didn't deliver as such adrenaline and justified action in a non-commercial film for a long time, an artistic and technical triumph. Get ready, because "Dunkirk" is going to transcend.

Hans Zimmer, a faithful Musketeer, returns recharged and ready to rise with well-deserved awards at the expense of his scores that not only include atmospheric obligations, these try to emulate stressful melody of a countdown, atomic effect of explosive artifacts, meteoric heartbeat or oxygen deficiency of the martyrs, a list of cadences endowing scenes with energy and tension like no other war film. Mr. Zimmer's wonders gain greater strength to the excellent work in the sound editing room, which accompanied by Shepard tone, are exciting. Gunshots are deafening, they are combined with the soundtrack, the crackling of the fire, the teeth chattering of a soldier, the cries of help under the water or the overflight over our heads provoke one of the most compelling cinematic experiences.

I will never forget "Dunkirk", the movie that made me lose my record about seeing a film in IMAX cinemas, two words: mind-blowing and memorable.

Some familiar faces go back, flaunting their high acting capacities. Hardy, Rylance and Murphy manage the cast purely masculine, understandable due to the context of the events. Each one offers spirit and personality to their characters to ease the following of the story. The performances of newcomers Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden and new soloist Harry Styles are laudable and rewarding in the skin of children with war uniforms. In fact, Whitehead and Styles make a powerful debut that places them on the radar of quality directors, also in a panorama of acting prestige.

What would be the best words to describe "Dunkirk"? When the logo of Warner and Syncopy, bathed in a light blue, are unified with the war melodies, my feelings and sensations exploded of delight for the work of Christopher Nolan, creator of cinema with deep fundamentals and objectives. Brimming with complex and magnanimous technical components, intelligent and moving performances, a tremendous soundtrack and unmistakable and always welcome Nolan touch, "Dunkirk" becomes one of the best cinematographic experience so far this year, likewise, its function of entertaining for two hours with lights and pirouettes is relegated by the message of peace, unity and solidarity, three constituents not present in our anatomy. Did you think that one of the greatest war speeches in history — promulgated by the British politician Winston Churchill — recited by the protagonist was limited merely to the circumstance of the film?

The story - 400,000 men stranded on the beaches of the city, with the Nazi's slowly pushing in and surrounding - makes for an incredibly tense thrill ride. The entire film feels like a ticking time-bomb, ready to burst in a shower of flames and death at any moment. The characters - all of whom we learn nothing about - are, surprisingly, very interesting. You automatically feel for each and every one of them, and the thought of "lack of characterization" never comes to mind. The realistic, gripping action rivals that of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, Hans Zimmer's score is unbelievably effective, the cinematography is breathtaking, and the direction is flawless. Dunkirk is not just a film, but an experience, and one that every history buff - and Nolan fan - must see. Expand

It’s a thriller that puts you on the edge of your seat throughout the runtime and only lets up for small amounts of time. What makes this movie unique is that it doesn’t focus on the characters, but the event itself. In most war movies, we focus on a single character as they go through an event. In this case, the movie focuses on the event itself. It does focus particularly on a soldier played by One Direction’s Harry Styles, a father played by Mark Rylance, and a pilot played by Tom Hardy. However, there’s no backstory on any of these characters. Instead, we only see them as they go through this event. We see from their perspective, the events of Dunkirk.

The movie has 3 different plotlines. One focuses on the soldiers stuck on the beach. The second focuses on a dad and his two kids who answer the call and head to Dunkirk to aid in the rescue, despite the danger involved in doing that. The third focuses on airforce pilots and their efforts to take down Nazi warplanes. Nolan switches between the 3 plots throughout the movie and they all join together by the end. This movie is a little under 2 hours long and it gets into the action almost immediately after it starts. There isn’t much backstory provided, so it’s important to research the background of Dunkirk before you go and watch this.

Dunkirk is more of an experience than a movie. The camerawork makes us feel that we’re there right alongside these people. It makes us feel that we’re in the war, instead of watching the war. The sound work influences this as well. When bullets are fired, they are as loud as real bullets. When planes approach the soldiers on the beach, their roar will almost make your ears ring. When a ships sinks, the camera is at water level showing struggling soldiers trying to escape. The camera shows the airplane dogfight scenes in detail. Since minimal computer effects are used, it makes it all the more real. In fact, some of the small boats that were used in the movie were the actual boats that aided in the rescue in 1940. It all feels as if a cameraman were there with the troops in 1940, filming what was happening in real time. It makes the movie very realistic and horrifying. You’ll feel exhausted (in a good way) by the end.

Dunkirk’s also almost a silent movie as the characters say few lines. The action and soundtrack propel it forward. While it could have provided more backstory on the event and the characters, Dunkirk is a fantastic movie. It’s not as memorable as other movies, but the experience you feel while watching it is unlike any other film. I’d give this a 90%. It’s the type of movie that’s made for the big screen and you’re doing yourself a disservice by not seeing it in a theater. Dunkirk is a unique experience that’s worth seeing. It is a fitting tribute to the troops who served there.

One of the things that makes this movie so great is how entertaining it is whithout relaying on the dialogue, it is a war movie that is going to make you realize the terror of a war without the use of blood or rotting corpses, and although it probably isn´t Nolan´s best film, it is high on that list
The only problem that i had with dunkirk is also its biggest strength, The suspense of it, sometimes the tense moments go for far too long, which only made me want to move on to the next scene, also, the movie takes very little time to breathe and that is usually a great thing, but a movie needs to "breathe" from time to time, but overall this film is nothing less than a masterpiece, another great Nolan film.

I was looking forward to Dunkirk, because it would be an interesting turn of his films and would give him acclaim. I feel that this was partially for Oscar bait, but who cares when you have a film like this. It's so intense and realistic, because it follows the feeling of the British soldiers themselves, not everyone in the war, but the events really happening. We don't need to know about what the Germans looked like, the characters reactions and actions to prevent the attacks and to save their own lives really shows what war is like. Many people don't appreciate the sophistication in this film, for Nolan has included a realistic amount of violence and a smart way to play with time. Very impressed how he jumped from the silly Interstellar to an accurate portrayal of Dunkirk. Beautifully shot, and don't listen to the haters about the film itself or about the history. Great movie. The music accentuate the tension and is interesting but surely not your typical orchestrated symphony. Even if the dialogues are sparse, you feel there is a very good reason for it. The actors are really good and seems all marked by the war in some ways. The film is more about the action then the strategy that went into the actual event and not war movie that focus on the bloody part too much. The planes scenes were my favourite because they show how hard it was to use them. The sky camera angles are spectacular and gives you the impression of being in the plane. I think the flashback between the planes and the boats can be hard to understand at first viewing. When I saw it a second time I was able to better connect the timeline. And in a way it made first viewing an exercise of connecting the dots... Otherwise this movie is intense because it doesn't really stop that much. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A future classic and a terrific movie experience. One of the best war films I've ever seen and definitely the most touching and beautiful one since 'The Thin Red Line'.

Nolan succeeded in making a thrilling and exciting movie out of a simple story by messing with timeline and narratives. However, the real genius of the film is in the visuals. The 70mm IMAX format really paid off: with breathtaking extreme long shots, shaky-cam close-ups and a great deal of practical effects, the film creates an atmosphere that's tense, beautiful, realistic and terrifying at the same time. Hans Zimmer's score is brilliant, the ticking clocks and half-note orchestral steps set the tone of the film pretty early on.

I think what really makes the film so tense - besides the visuals and the score - is the lack of the German army during the whole movie. The Allied Forces know they're there: they talk about them, you can hear gunshots, see planes dropping explosives, torpedoes tearing ships apart, constant smoke in the background but can never see a German soldier (bar one of the last scenes, but even then, their faces remain hidden).

The thing that makes the movie only a 9/10 for me, is that it touches on some pretty interesting and thought-provoking themes - like the British Navy not allowing the French on their boats or the shell-shock driven actions of Cillian Murphy's character - but never explores them deep enough. This is caused by the great spectrum of characters in the movie. On one hand it's a huge advantage: the audience sees the events through many perspectives that cross each other near the end of the movie, but can never really dive deep into the thoughts and feeling of the protagonists (the lack of dialogue and constant cuts between different storylines don't help either).

I highly recommend Robert Merle's brilliant novel: Week-end at Zuydcoote on the same subject wich tells the story of a French soldier during the Dunkirk evacuation. Merle, beeing a Dunkirk survivor himself, tells the events from an entirely different point of view that depicts the Brits in a lot less heroic way.

All in all, Dunkirk is probably the best movie of the year because it's brilliant in almost all aspects of film-making. Hats off, Chris Nolan.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From the opening scene until the end there is a sense of excitement and uncertainty of what will come next. This is orchestrated through fantastic writing and cinematography by Christopher Nolan, and the amazing score of powerful bass notes and a constant ticking of a watch that was gifted from Nolan to the genius composer Hans Zimmer. An amazing job was done to leave audiences on the edge of their seat, creating a sense of uncertainty of what was going to happen next. This was done through the score and direction, but ultimately the film's performers are what stole the show, especially Hardy who gives one of his greatest performances even when you are only able to see his eyes for the majority of it. One of Nolan's best and I highly recommend it to everyone who is in to the genre, and into amazing climactic stories! Expand

Whether it is the greatest war films of all time or not is a matter of both time and polemics. Unequivocally, the movie has the firepower to bracket itself among the other Great War films like Come and See, Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket. However, Dunkirk is the greatest war film of all time - is a probable topic of discussion for the cinema lovers across the globe.

Dunkirk is Nolan’s best movie – till date. This movie is not only going to revive his attitude as an artist but will also help him to clear the air that he comes with a conservative agenda which he acquired after Inception and Interstellar. Dunkirk, based on Great Britain’s “Colossal Military Disaster” (quoted by Churchill, then Prime Minister of England) during WWII, brings out that Nolanesque flavor missing since Prestige.

The movie tells a string of acutely distressing stories of British soldiers hemmed in on the beach of Dunkirk. A story of survival, showing very little sympathy to the survivors; survival through retreating, hiding and other unjust and treacherous ways it could have been possible. The movie gives assurance that it will not take into a happy land. It is an intense war movie intended to make an indent on the far-fetched glory of Great Britain and its people. Though the story lacks the variety of Apocalypse Now or the spine-chilling barbarity depicted in Come and See, the single-layered uniformity makes it unique. It seems like, Nolan’s primary and sole agenda of making this movie is to tarnish the Britain’s military- glory and with that raising the questions concerning the role of Great Britain during WWII.

Dunkirk starts with one of the many attacks from the enemy's (the word enemy came in texts with the skillful omission of the word Germans or Germany) side killing 4-5 British soldiers leaving only one to retreat who lands himself in a hidey-hole of Dunkirk beach to survive. The director introduced the beach in a weird fashion. The scene goes like this: a frantic-looking retreating British soldier - the one returned from Enemy’s den- takes a piss in other-wordily way on the beach witnessing an orgy of dead bodies lying on the beach. That soldier - wearing a petty looking coat and always gasping – is certainly the signature tone the movie. That tone, present throughout the movie, was successful enough to dint image of her Majesty’s supreme pride – British Army and Royal Navy. The movie repeatedly raises the questions of the role of British army’s mindset, ability, and courage to face war-time challenges.

Dunkirk is an ear-bud perforating movie jam-packed with able bodied, grim-faced, dejected Caucasian men with the occasional presence of few Red Cross nurses. Those Caucasian men, mostly English, trapped at the beach of Dunkirk - a beautiful looking beach located in France- were waiting to get help from the other side of the English Channel.

In short, the movie questions the British people who have mastered the art of blowing-own-trumpet. Throughout the movie, Nolan depicted the agony and pain of the British soldiers through the imagery of sinking royal navy ships; debauched, shell-shocked, peer-despising, backstabbing British soldiers hiding under sheep decks; a confused lot of English admirals unable to take decisions; 3 Royal Jet Fighters (all lost at the end of the movie) trying to fight the mighty Germans; and the eventual evacuation of 3, 00,000 British soldiers by the ordinary English men and women.

Interestingly, Nolan omitted the major parts of the Churchill's "We Shall Never Surrender" speech. At the end of the movie, he also questioned the role of British media, especially towards their affinity in generating click-baiting headlines, in during the WWII.

Be it Harry Styles or Cillian Murphy or others mostly played the role of British soldiers in the movie are really successful in documenting the psychological states of the fallen British soldiers during Dunkirk evacuation. Tom Hardy, once again, passed with flying colors. The Nolan-Zimmer combination is successful, once again, in creating a screeching sound throughout the movie only making it a nerve-wracking experience for the audiences.

At the end, Dunkirk does give a new perspective to the world about an event that occurred in WWII.
