This same flaw interferes with proper world-building. That, coupled with the “shot in home video” feel of the cinematography in this movie, leaves “Dredd” unable to deliver a true science fiction, action thriller. The result is a rather mundane, and basic modern day crime drama; one that a “made for television” crew would have better delivered. Narrow corridors are the cheapest to film, and if I didn’t know better, I’d say this movie was made with little care for quality. More importantly, the pace of this film fails to keep its viewers’ attention; an issue whose roots lie in the lack of a compelling story and a poorly prepared plot. The magic behind the Dredd universe is chiefly its protagonist and his “Batman-esc” gadgets. The technology of Dredd’s era needs to be showcased against a foe with similarly matching power. Sadly, this production failed to consider letting “Slo-Mo” give its users superhuman reaction times. Without endearing, life threatening, or peculiar henchmen, this movie devolves into a lazy popcorn flick. In conclusion, “Dredd” is a lesson in the value of meaning in film: a production must offer the viewer a cathartic experience, or suffer the consequences at the box office. Expand

Dredd manages to find the right balance between playing it straight while still embracing its silly elements, helped by a pitch-perfect performance from Karl Urban. He knows what movie he's in. I only wish the film allowed itself to delve more into its social commentary and ambiguous moral implications, though the film doesn't entirely side-step it either. Expand

The director knew how to keep things interesting and the cast did well with their roles.

Just give this movie a try.

It might take more than one viewing to really understand the greatness of this film, but it has it all: a visual delight, great casting and performances, great soundtrack, brilliant writing. It is a violent and gory comic book movie, but it is soaked in that rare bit of magic, all the same. I kid you not, it is sublime.

Upon first watching, I thought the movie was hamstrung by the one location, but that thought is long in the past. What a disappointment that there could possibly never be a follow up. At least we got this one.

The action is great and brutal, the atmosphere is very good, and even the story while simple is well written. Both main characters grow through the movie , especially cassandra. No, i am not simping when i say i actually feel for her. I think female protagonists have been treated badly in hollywood, with dozens of attempts to make women badass, however because of the excellent writing, cassandra feels like a real badass person. She needs to prove himself for the judge and doesn't do that with whining or complaining, she actually learn through the process, proves herself and does what she needs to do. Judge is also badass btw. He feels like batman a bit to much but who cares. Sure he has some corny lines but his voice makes up for it. I'd say the only real complaint is that the villain is a bit weak, she only gives out orders(she has a small background story but that's it).

Possibly among the top 5 sci-fi movies that i have seen.

The action is exciting and the 3D is relatively well done. Some of the darker shots were a bit grainy but other than that the technical aspects were solid. It is gory which I was not expecting. The drug sequences were well done and memorable. Expand

Manny a Hollywood "classic" turns out to be trash only rated up by the paid critics, but it's really the audience score over a period of years that tells the true story. The universal acclaim for Dredd is that answer: in 2012 it received criticism for the level of violence and it lacking the "humour" of the 2000AD comic books. That's not the case: Dredd is the nearest depiction of the dystopian, authoritarian, human rights infringing future depicted in the comics. Every aspect of the movie is well put together, and it ends up being a genuinely great sci-fi movie that does the source material justice. My recommendation is to give Dredd a go, you'll be surprised by how enjoyable it is and it's only a shame the whiny critics stopped this from being more of a commercial success at the box office when it was release a decade ago. One thing I liked that they took away from the original were the set pieces, props and costumes, the original was very detailed in this area but their decision to keep the comic book style was a bad choice, Dredd (2012) made the right choice with a more realistic take. What I did not like about both versions was the **** action typical of most movies in this genre, at what point do you just pause and say "you know, Dredd should be deceased by now", there were so many cliches in both, I get that this is more like a continuation or spinoff of the 1995 movie but this is just so... Shallow, but I like that this is more open-ended, it expands the story after the main plot rather than making the implication that they lived happily ever after once a few corrupt judges were gone. Did not have the comic feel to me like Stallone`s 1995 big screen adaptation.
Sure, it was on a lower budget and CGI was not so evolved but that movie to me felt like a comic. The new one is just meh, average.

The 'original' Stallone Dredd outing was a fun but goofy take on a serious world. It served a purpose but it felt contrived.
The Karl Urban take on Dredd seems authentic and plausible, a reasonable projection of the world as we know it today, with little fantasy or whimsy.
Urban's Dredd is near perfection as a movie, a pair of ethical, principled cops grinding away at a massive crime organization, one floor at a time.
The brutal simplicity of the Dredd justice, with its instant death sentences, is definitely abhorrent to the current climate of clemency for even the most savage criminals. However Dredd represents a civilization on the edge of collapse, and the punishment fits the crimes. There are many parallels to our times. As an action movie, the brilliant cat and mouse game played out in mega tower PeachTrees is on the same level as the first Die Hard. Even on rewatching, I appreciate the survival and justice dispensation skills of our 2 protagonists. Something must be said about Anderson, played so brilliantly by Olivia Thirlby. She does not necessarily represent the kinder, gentler side of the law as might be stereotypical, she represents in a way the smarter and more subtle form of the law, one that uses mind control and manipulation to further the cause. I really related to her embattled, sorrowful character, and her desperate desire to become a Judge.
Dredd hands down deserves a sequel, with this cast and continuity. I would even petition for it.

Yikes! After finally remembering this movie existed from my initial interest upon its release, I got the chance to watch Dredd. As a mindless action flick, it's good enough to sit through. It's moderately enjoyable from a cinematic point of view. Great color grade, set-pieces, art design, for the most part. But, I'm happy I didn't waste the price of a movie ticket. Amazingly, this film even comes up on a couple top scifi movies of ALL TIME. Sometimes my fellow geek culture brethren severely disappoint me.

Where to start? First off, how did the Judges' helmets get past the director's approval? The funky red X design not only looks goofy, but isn't practical for a job where seeing your environment clearly and in its entirety is paramount to staying alive. The bottom of the X comes right in front of the mid to upper field of vision. When Dredd asks Anderson why she forgot her helmet she should have replied, Because I like to see where I'm going. Oh, and speaking on helmets. Anderson said she doesn't wear it because it prevents her from reading minds. So why was she able to read through Dredd's helmet? Actually, why was it necessary to have a mutant in the story at all? Seemed entirely out of place.

Then there's the fact that they cast Karl Urban, a well known actor, as Dredd but your average movie goer wouldn't have known, SINCE HE NEVER TOOK OFF HIS HELMET. This isn't the first movie to commit this ridiculous mistake. Man in the Iron Mask comes to mind. That stated, He did do a fairly excellent portrayal of Judge Dredd. Though, how insulting was it that we, the audience, were expected not to realize how ridiculous it was that when his gun was almost out of ammo, that Dredd didn't pick up a couple discarded weapons from the dead baddies? I mean come on, it was bad enough that writing oversight resulting in him being shot with an ARMOR PIERCING round in the guts and literally walking away two minutes later. That exit wound should have been the size of a softball. Yet, when Anderson gets shot with a regular bullet in the stomach she's down for ten minutes.

What else? Oh, the camera eyed albino computer hacker. Why did it look like he was going to start crying in ABSOLUTELY EVER SCENE HE WAS IN? It's like the director told him his inspiration was that his secret lover, Baxter the Hamster, had been ratnapped by robot cats and would only be returned if Electro Eyes went outside to catch some rays and get a tan.

The movie was also predictable. Call 911. Next scene four Judges walk up to the building. Hmmm, I wonder if they are bad guys? Let's ask the Peachtree Command guy. Will you testify to that? Yes. Bhoooosh!!! And, thud.

Lastly, though not the last flaw of the film, there's the whole slo mo drug cinematic effect. The movie should have been ten minutes shorter. Yeah, hey, we get it. The narcotic makes the user see sparkly faded rainbow colors at a thousand fps. Literally, there should have only been four or five uses of this effect. The first time the drug is demonstrated. The scene with the two teenagers buying a hit. When the three guys were skinned and tossed. And, of course when Mama met that same doom. Actually, four, yeah, it could have been done in four. But, definitely no more than five.

I typically refrain from expressing my dissatisfaction of a movie, but this one receives entirely too much praise for being such a stinker. It almost qualifies to be in the category of movies that are so bad, they're good.

Simply put: I think this is the best comic book movie I have ever seen.

As the credits rolled, I was left with a weird feeling inside: complete and total satisfaction, and not a single complaint.

With a remarkably light budget, this film perfectly tells a story in the world of Dredd. It doesn't over-exaggerate the stakes: a drug lord is endangering the lives of ~10,000 people. She's breaking the law. So she cannot be allowed to continue.

Dredd, gruff and unfeeling, shows up to dispense law and order, which just happens to coincide with justice. His helmet doesn't come off. There is no two-dimensional romance with Judge Anderson. There is a relationship and a mutual respect, but it stays PERFECTLY respectful to the source material.

When all is said and done, with hundreds of criminals in this vast urban cityscape dead, and Dredd is asked by his commanding officer what happened, Urban perfectly captures everything Judge Dredd is with two simple, blunt, un-pretentious words: "drug bust".

Just another day in the life of Dredd. God bless everyone involved in the making of this film, and here's hoping they scrounge up enough for the sequels.

Fortunately, as with most boxDredd failed at the box office for two reasons: the studio's forcing most cinemas to show it almost exclusively in 3D; and its adult age rating, which cut out a wide section of the audience it was aimed at. Fortunately, as with most box office tallies, the figures are not a reflection of its quality, as it is quite possibly one of the best comic-book-based films this side of the millennium. As opposed to a blah, watered-down, squeaky clean 12A certificate product, Dredd is a bracing, brutal, dark and disturbing action thriller.

We are shown a vision of the future that is a frightening parallel to our world, where the poverty-stricken and least-educated are forced into an existence besieged by drugs and violence. While that's clearly the point that Garland's screenplay attempts to make, the darkness and nihilism of Dredd's world is so brilliantly realised on camera that one often forgets that we're looking at another world. Karl Urban is a menacing hulk; Olivia Thirlby unpretentiously confronts Dredd's blind upholding of barbaric laws; Lena Headey's performance makes for an uncomfortable watch, as her maniacal character embodies the lonely, scarred and depressed psychopaths of our world; and Domhnall Gleeson is underrated as the damaged, sympathetic victim.

As an action movie, Dredd successfully imitates the riotously fun aspects of 18-rated films from the late 80s and 90s. However, what they lack in character, story and brains, Dredd fully makes up for.

Expand

As a movie in general it has it lows and highs but specifically as an action movie is great: gory (without being tasteless), great action scenes, great visuals and a couple of main characters that grew on you as the story develops, it doesn't unnecessarily prolongs like most movies these days so that is also a plus.
It have the classic action moments where the hero should have died but they are few and easy to forgive.
I will recommend it to anyone looking for an action flick without a doubt.

This gritty, dystopian satire is visually delightful, well paced, and surprisingly thought-provoking. Lena Headey is terrifying and awesome. Karl Urban keeps Dredd's utter humorlousness from being dull, and Olivia Thirlby humanizes the judges.

Distributor Lionsgate, buoyed by a positive reactions at advance screenings, decided to move the film out of the "dumping ground" wasteland of late summer and into the earliest days of autumn. Despite obvious (but mostly superficial) similarities to The Raid: Redemption, Dredd can claim to be sufficiently different to avoid being labeled a rip-off. It's also much closer to the comic book than the Hollywood-ized 1995 version that starred Sylvester Stallone in the title role.

This time around, Judge Dredd is played by Karl Urban, although you'd never know it was Doctor Leonard McCoy under the mask if not for the credits. As in the comics, Dredd never removes his mask, so the most we see of Urban are his lips and stubbled chin. Also, he speaks in a throaty growl that sounds a lot like Christian Bale's Batman. Dredd is less a character than an icon. He shows no emotion and, although he utters the occasional one-liner, he's as straightforward as they come. Think Robocop.

As in The Raid: Redemption, this is about an attempt by law enforcement officers to infiltrate a high rise building that has been co-opted by gangsters, fight their way to the top, and take out the chief bad guys. The Raid: Redemption is more bloody and visceral, but Dredd offers its own pleasures, chief of which is a scene of mayhem in which the villain, Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), takes out an entire floor of the complex in a futile attempt to kill two judges. It's pretty spectacular stuff. And, once Dredd runs out of ammo, the level of tension escalates remarkably.

Dredd has an associate, rookie judge Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a mop-haired blond who eschews headgear. She is being assessed for a pass/fail grade by Dredd. Her test scores were judged "marginal," but she has been accorded an opportunity in the field because of her impressive psychic abilities. She's unprepared for Dredd's brutality, but adapts quickly. She also plays mind games with a prisoner they take during their initial raid of the Peach Tree high rise. Kay (Wood Harris) knows something about Ma-Ma that she doesn't want him to tell anyone, and Anderson goes mucking around in his mind out to find out what it is. It turns out that Peach Tree is ground zero for the manufacture and distribution of a new drug, Slo-Mo (makes the brain think time is moving at 1% of actual speed), and there's nothing Ma-Ma won't do to protect that secret. Trapping two judges in the building and hunting them down is child's play. Or so she thinks.

The action scenes are graphic and well choreographed with a slightly artistic edge. Visually, Dredd is impressive, with the digital rendering of Mega-City One offering the most satisfying helping of visual candy. Dredd was filmed in 3-D, but there are problems. Most of these occur during special effects-laden scenes that attempt to represent reality through a Slo-Mo filter. The 3-D comes across as artificial and overdone in these sequences. There is also noticeable blur during a few of the action scenes. Director Pete Travis does, however, solve the problem of things being too dark. Dredd has just about the right level of lighting.

If there's a serious disappointment, it's the villain. Ma-Ma, despite being played with over-the-top zest by Lena Headey, isn't a very impressive foil for the mighty Judge Dredd, even when she calls for "back-up." Heady is so inconsequential that the final confrontation seems more like an afterthought than an important moment in the story. It's a little like Superman confronting Lex Luthor, except in this case Lex doesn't have any Kryptonite on hand.

Unlike many post-apocalyptic scenarios, the one presented in Dredd offers sufficient glimpses of a dystopian future without overselling the dark, ugly miseries of this future. The background is strong enough to make some of the movie's more outlandish elements seem credible and to represent the dour Judge Dredd as a paragon of justice. There's also a fair amount of dark humor, often of the gallows variety, that never seems out-of-place. Not much of what Dredd has to offer is new or groundbreaking, but the fusion of familiar elements generates a smartly-paced, suspenseful 90 minutes that's a vast improvement over the 1995 film, although not quite on par with The Raid: Redemption when it comes to pure, unexpurgated action.

It was dark, it was gritty, it was complex enough to keep you interested but focused enough to not throw you off and get too distracted with itself.

It was a very wise move on the part of Director Pete Travis to focus the attention of this film in one location rather than across the entirety of Megacity 1.

Mama (Lena Headey) felt so true to the spirit of Judge Dredd as a gang-leader in the 2000AD universe that I could've sworn she was taken directly from the comic books.

Karl Urban made a fantastic Judge Dredd, with a straight, autonomous, and unemotional by-the-book keeper of the law which, again, felt so faithful to the original comics.

The shooting of the 'slow-mo' scenes were again so fantastically done and so entrancingly beautiful and cinematic that they really did paint the picture of the effects of this drug in this world.

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this immensely underrated film to fans of the 2000AD comics, as well as fans of sci-fi action and comic book films in general.

Forget the Stallone adaptation; forget that this is actually an adaptation of a comic book; if you're in for badassery and want a film enjoyable both for group or self, this fits the bill.

It's efficient in the story telling and character development, not go overthetop or dwelling in elements, but understanding just how much it needs to give so that we the audience care about the characters and the plot. Hypnotic imagery shows up, surprising considering the source material and what you would expect otherwise. Cinematographic excellence is the single most surprising element in this movie, with a director who not understands storytelling, but how to visually display the story that is haunting, chilling, and entrancing.

Get some friends, get some beer, and sit back and prepare your mind to be esploded.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Dredd" is your typical die-hard-type movie following multiple well-known cliches throughout the story. It features a guy who takes on a crime mob alongside his poorly-developed female sidekick/character, eventually hinting to the issues of corruption within his own structure, and a Hollywood ending. I mean, you can't be typical and stereotypes than that today. However, I won't say that I totally hated the movie. There were some quite enjoyable punchlines delivered by Dredd, whose reticence and sharp wit are somewhat vaguely reminiscent of Batman's. Plus the shooting of the action scenes was rather good. Overall, it's a one-night-stander in terms of cinema that you could watch when you're bored, have a laugh or two (graphic scenes warning!) and forget about completely the next morning. Expand

The comparisons to The Raid: Redemption, both of them similar in setting and take on anarchy, is understandable but both are good films with different aesthetics.

Characters are about videogame tier, you got Dredd who was told to scowl constantly to be more like the comic but instead looked **** stupid in real life, then you got attractive blonde rookie who's supposed to be a sympathetic female lead that acts like a normal human to contrast all the **** up junkie fodder for Dredd to murder and lastly you got the antagonist mama who just says stuff to characters that dont matter and then dies. Dredd has been resurrected and is far better than before. Everything about his character that is important and relevant to the task at hand is addressed, no need to dig too deep, just watch him tear it up. It's a action dream for sure. However, I think it did overstep some boundaries at least with the gore and graphic scenes what seemed just overboard and plain unnecessary for a movie meant simply to entertain, what didn't tank this movie is that it didn't revel in that. Hard-nosed and brutal justice against criminals is the name of the game. Of which it delivers. With this portrayal, I think Judge Dredd has become a new favorite comic hero of mine. The rating is low due to the bloodiness that steps too far out and the feel of a sequel setup due to a very simple plot and small scale. But hey, i like it. Definitely not without its charm. Adult? Strong stomach? Action addict? Worth a watch. Expand

I like how this movie is action packed and heavy use of conventional effects are great for me! Kinda reminds me of old days of action movies with arnold and stallone tho Karl Urban was actually believable in his role. I justify giving this movie 10 because of the genre it represents that has almost died off in the reasent years. The plot is simple maybe too simple for some people but the movie is not about that its about the rookies and dredds onscreen chemistry and great action scenes. Truly amazing movie that sadly didnt do too well at the box office probably bacause of the bad advertising Expand

A nice simple action movie. Very stylish, easy to follow story, good effects. It does however have incredibly over the top violence so not one for the faint of heart.

Great action, great sense of character and place. My only qualm is with the underwhelming scale of events chosen in the movie. In 2000AD megacity one was an overpopulated disgusting reflection of a commercially bound society and often shows this as a joke. Am guessing this stems from limits in budget for production and if it weren't for that slightly too small scale of mega city events portrayed I would say is 10/10 for getting that character on screen in a way that feels right. This movie is underrated, for sure. You seriously couldn't ask for a better performances form Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby after watching this movie, because they did their best, and so did director Pete Travis.

Dredd is action packed. It is full of gore. It kept me on the edge of my seat. This is non stop action. Disturbing at times but that just adds to the dark and sinister tone of the movie. Dredd is the best movie of 2012.

The new Dredd is excellent and not comparable at all to the old one.

The only knock against it is that it feels more like a pilot series episode than a proper movie. Not because it’s bad, but because it only explores a very small slice of the world of Judge Dredd and leaves you wanting more. It would be great if a network like Showtime or HBO picked this up for a regular series or if there will at least be a sequel made.

Keep in mind it is an "R" rated action movie, so it's more of a Guy Flick; where most women will think it´s too violent (and I only say this because I can see that women are not quite Dredd's target audience, that being said I do know quite a bit of girls who really liked this movie), and its definitely not a kid friendly movie.

The 3D part of the film is nothing exceptional for the most part but there are some scenes where it really pays off (the scenes with the slo-mo drug effect come to mind)

The plot is not over the top like it is with most Comic Book Movies, so don't be expecting a movie like any of the Marvel Movies or most CMBs; instead it has a very simplistic feel to it (don't get me wrong this is why it is so good), its a straight shoot em up film in it's core. You don't need to know anything about the Comic Book to enjoy the movie and if you do you'll only enjoy it more, I also liked how even when they introduce you to the characters it's not really a beginning story.

I saw the Stallone Judge Dredd movie back in the 90's and thought it was a classic Comic Book movie turned Hollywood. Two essential parts of the character of Dredd are his personality and his uniform and I always thought that by removing the helmet for most of the movie and changing the personality of Dredd they completely changed the Character, that together with softening the tone of the movie to an almost PG 13 kind of movie, and giving Dredd a comedic patsy sidekick in the form of Rob Schneider, were the reasons why Stallone's Judge Dredd was so awful. None of these things are present in Dredd (2012), this movie on the other hand is quite dark and crude which is very much the way Comic Book is.

I also thought Karl Urban's performance was right on, it fit the character perfectly and I appreciated the commitment he put to the role by sticking to what makes Dredd so great, and not demanding to have face time in the movie. Judge Anderson was also done amazingly, both in in the writing and the portrayal of the character played by Olivia Thirlby (I absolutely loved her!)
The only downside of this movie was the villain, although the Ma-Ma character was ok and fit well into the Dredd Universe, I still would have liked a better villain, one that played opposite of Dredd, instead Ma-Ma is just a common thug turned drug lord which is nothing next to Dredd.

If you are not afraid of a bit of violence and blood on screen and are looking for a great movie to watch be sure to see Dredd.

I have never read the comics so I can't judge Dredd from that perspective, no pun intended. I have seen the original film and now this one so I have judged both of them as stand alone movies. The original movie had a few main weaknesses and II have never read the comics so I can't judge Dredd from that perspective, no pun intended. I have seen the original film and now this one so I have judged both of them as stand alone movies. The original movie had a few main weaknesses and I thought this one addressed all of those. I thought the weaknesses of Stallone's Dredd were the lazy writing, the cheesy 1980's styling, and the numerous plot holes. Karl Urban's Dredd kept the high entertainment value, well done action sequences, and unique setting that is Mega-City One and with the corrected flaws, you would think it would be a much better movie. Not so much. While it lost the cheesy 1980's effects, it replaced them with possibly worse made-for-3D cinematic effects that do nothing for the movie and only drag out a not-so-interesting plot. The gore factor was also a bit high. While I am never one to have any issues with violence or anything, I thought this movie was overdone and felt unnecessary. An analogy would be profane language versus a little teenage boy who feels like he has to use profanity to look cool. I don't have a problem with profanity but when it feels forced, it's just stupid. The overly graphic nature of some of the scenes in this film are like that. They felt forced at times and took away from the movie. The plot is also very, VERY different from the original. Essentially they kept the setting and the protagonist and stripped everything else away and just expanded upon the initial sequence from the first film enough to make an entire movie out of it. While I think they did a good job with it, the oversimplified approach wasn't entirely engaging. Urban and Olivia Thirlby do a solid job as the main characters, though, and the film is entertaining so I'd still suggest checking it out if you get a chance. Expand
