Movie NationJun 12, 2026
The politics of Disclosure Day are allusive at best, but Spielberg and Koepp are strongly aware that they’re making a film at a polarizing time, when human qualities as basic as empathy and openness are not something we can expect everyone to possess. Spielberg isn’t the type to succumb to cynicism, even now, but Disclosure Day turns uncertainty into its own level of tension, right through the emotional final moments of the film.

At this point in his career, noting Spielberg’s mastery of craft is like saying that Michelangelo wielded a mean chisel. But Disclosure Day is one of those movies, like Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another last year, for which noting the cinematic prowess at work constitutes a part of the pleasure.

Spielberg has long been fascinated with the concept of information (and misinformation) as both weapon and tool, and ultimately gives this science fiction fable the feel of a gritty 1970s conspiracy thriller; a bombastic underdog, truth-to-power tale – albeit one with cosmological consequences.

Disclosure Day is another Spielberg blockbuster triumph, a welcome return to the genre he’s always been best at, and a genuinely spine-tingling, soul-searching experience that leaves us wondering less about aliens and more about how we can learn to listen to, understand, and have empathy for each other.

Yes, Spielberg does believe that we are not the only game running in the cosmos. But he also believes that our better angels have not left the building, and that movies still have the power to communally blow minds and open hearts. That idea may strike some as old-fashioned, but it doesn’t seem alien in the slightest.

This is a summer blockbuster made for cinephiles, with no IP attachment and no overreliance on obvious Easter eggs. Even if you aren't entirely in awe of what Spielberg and Koepp have cooked up, there is still plenty to be impressed by. As a Spielberg devotee, Disclosure Day gave me exactly what I wanted from his return to the alien movie.

Disclosure Day turns out to be a lavishly intense chase thriller with a dollop of deep-think rumination and two characters at its center whose own close encounters have shaped their lives and destinies. Scene for scene, the movie is a vigorous and diverting ride. Yet coming after the mountains of real UAP footage we’ve seen, Disclosure Day never gives you the contact high of awe that “Close Encounters” did.

At the heart of all the sci-fi shenanigans going on here is a longing for empathy in the face of things we can't quite understand. With Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg is attempting to give us a little hope in a hopeless world. The truth may not actually be out there, but wouldn't it be wonderful if it was?

Far-fetched as this popcorn movie gets, it crucially never loses sight of the notion that to look outward is to look within (and vice versa), a theory that only grows clearer over the span of a blockbuster whose 79-year-old director still peers back at his childhood for a better view of the stars.

Disclosure Day is both small and massive in scope — focused on a few specific characters over the course of a few days. That tightness could feel claustrophobic, except it allows the film to explore huge themes about faith and aliens, and how the existence of one might affect the other. In between the car chases, that is.

Screen RantJun 9, 2026
This movie is made for a world that has us spending most of our time looking down, whether metaphorically, heads buried in our own work and struggles, or literally, absorbed by the phones that have overtaken our lives. As if watching the skies is too big an ask in that context, Spielberg instead uses all his directorial power to encourage us to look at each other. The result is another great film in a career filled with them. Structured like a thriller with a propulsiveness worthy of Indiana Jones, Disclosure Day is an attempt to meet this cynical, divided moment and treat it with empathy, as well as with a healthy dose of good, ol' fashioned entertainment.
