Fun family movie. Story is fun and there is plenty for adults to enjoy as well as the kids. I think the sequel holds up better than the original but still a fun watch.

I heard that this movie was very good, and after seeing seeing it myself, I have to say I heartily concur. While not my favourite film of the year, and the film never tries to be that, Despicable Me is cute and wonderfully inventive. While itI heard that this movie was very good, and after seeing seeing it myself, I have to say I heartily concur. While not my favourite film of the year, and the film never tries to be that, Despicable Me is cute and wonderfully inventive. While it could have been a little longer, what made Despicable Me work was a number of things. The animation for starters is stunning, I liked the colours and character designs but it was the backgrounds and retro-futurist design that blew me away, while the gadgetry is ingenious.

The music fits very well with the film and is memorable without being overly ambitious or simplistic, the story is ceaselessly inventive and fast paced with a surprisingly clever subplot about the importance of family. The characters also add a lot, Gru is wonderfully zany especially and I found it impossible not to fall in love with his minions, they are so cute. But my favourite assets of Despicable Me are the humour and the voice cast. The writing is just excellent, it was so funny and incredibly smart without feeling too much, while the voice work is exemplary especially from Steve Carell whose brilliant vocals add a lot to the film's success.

Overall, a truly great film with a lot to like. 9/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

I only watched Despicable Me so that I could understand what was the deal with the Minion memes that moms share on Facebook. Turns out the movie is nothing like the cringe that is shown in them, especially considering Minions don't even talk properly. In fact it has more in common with the Reddit memes.
The story is quite nice. I like seeing stories like Shrek and The Angry Birds Movie, where some arrogant outcast wants to be left alone but slowly develops feelings and compassion for those whom they go out with an adventure with. Here Gru has his three adopted daughters - Margo, Edith and Agnes. Initially they look just like some cute troublemakers, until Gru starts doing his own things.
The thing which I like the most about this movie is the dynamic roster of characters. Vector is a funny villain who kinda reminds me of Syndrome from The Incredibles, except he's a nerd and has a funny voice. I laughed every time he used his fish gun. I was expecting Gru to be a very annoying character, the way he looked. But his voice is so cool, and the way he was introduced was somehow very satisfying to watch. Then there's Dr Nefarious, who seems to be somewhat of a paternal figure to all the Minions.
Despicable Me is nothing more than what it pretends to be: A simple, fun to watch animated movie with cute and funny characters meant for the laughs. It's something you'd watch only if you want to spend some time with children. I haven't talked much with children so I assume they already know about it, so you can use this movie as a means to talk to them.… Expand

A LAUGH RIOT! ( Will watch it again)

The plot is very interesting to keep you engrossed throughout the movie.It is not a very original plot but has the very humorous dialogs and acts.

Steve Carell's is SIMPLY amazing, he is funny in a very different way...he is the king of the awkward embarrassing insulting type of comedy. You can't help but remember Steve carell's during some of the dialog deliveries.

One of the funniest animation movie. Definitely Worth Watching twice.… Expand

¿Evil is the new black? It is true that at the time it was a new twist for the animation genre. Only now jokes are felt more for children's taste than for adults. The effort is worth at least the first, not the sequels and spin-offs.

Os personagens, de forma geral, são carismáticos e engraçados, mas é claro que a atenção é voltada para os Minions, que são genuinamente engraçados, a ponto de que eu já estava dando risada só de vê-los em tela e escutar a musica tema do mesmos. Gru é um personagem peculiar, a principio. Se rende a mais pura inocência de suas crianças e acaba enxergando as coisas de um ponto de vista bem diferente do até então habituado. As crianças são adoráveis, e toda trama que gira em torno delas funciona muito bem. O filme tem seus momentos dramáticos, mas sem muita enfase. O que mais predomina é o cômico, que funciona muito bem. Ele mesmo não se leva a serio em diversos momentos, o que tira o peso e atiça nossa curiosidade pelo quê vem em seguir.

Seus personagens únicos - os minions - e toda identidade voltada no audiovisual, com uma musica tema que gruda na cabeça, faz com que Meu Malvado Favorito seja memorável e super atraente de se rever!… Expand

Its crazy that this movie is 10 years old. For better and for worse, it definitely reshaped the face of animated film all through the 2010s. The film revolves around the figure of a failed villain who tries to steal the Moon, despite the constant interference of three girls he adopts and the competition with a new rival. The film also has the Minions, the villain's helpers. These adorable creatures speak an incomprehensible language and look curiously like cheese snacks in jeans, but they star in some of the film's most hilarious and absurd moments. The humor is intelligent, not forced or stupid and knows when to give way to the story in order to keep the film coherent and with a good rhythm. All the characters were very well thought out. Computer animation, the basis of animations, has been carefully done, is very pleasing to eye of the public and inspires a pleasant sense of realism.… Expand

The first time I watched Despicable Me, I expected a childish Disney-like movie, but I actually got a great movie appropriate for all ages with lots of adventure. Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures did a great job at making this movie entertaining for the public and showing us that even a villain can turn good. This movie has great meaning with lots of laughter. The movie teaches kids and maybe adults good characteristics like generosity. There is some emotional times between Gru and the girls.The movie represents how hard it can be for adults to juggle kids and work. It has good actors that certainly play their parts well, especially the Minions! Though the positives keep building up with this great movie, there are some negatives with it as well. Gru finds himself at Miss Hattie’s Home for Girls adopting three girls: Margo, Edith, and Agnes. The representation of Miss Hattie’s adoption center is misrepresented in the adoption process and is not the best choice for a family that has young adopted children. At the beginning there is a moment when the girls are praying to be adopted and isn’t appropriate if you don’t have a religion. The positives certainly outweigh the negatives but overall, I think Despicable Me is a great, family friendly movie!… Expand

Okay, Despicable Me is a decent movie, but we already knew that. In fact I won't be the first you've heard this from. Either you've seen this movie or you never had an intent on seeing it in the first place, so I decided to dedicate thisOkay, Despicable Me is a decent movie, but we already knew that. In fact I won't be the first you've heard this from. Either you've seen this movie or you never had an intent on seeing it in the first place, so I decided to dedicate this review to Illumination, and my dissatisfaction with what they are doing. At least with Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar, they all make great movies now and then, and clearly try to make a worthwhile piece of entertainment (most of the time). But apart from this, their first film, their movies have always ranged from unforgivable trash such as 'Hop' or utter mediocrity such as 'Sing'. Their Minions movie wasn't enjoyed by many, many audience members, but it made over $1,000,000,000 at the box office, and people still continue to watch their below-average content. Well done, people. Their hopes lie in the gullible audience and naive children that continue to give them money, and no matter how bad their movies turn out to be, the cycle will repeat, resulting in a gold mine for Illumination. None of their movies have failed financially, nor been good enough to barely pass a 7/10 on average from critics. And I am aware that ALL companies have a big priority of making money, but it's not normally to this extent, and I fear if this continues then soon enough every animated movie will be just as forgettable and bland as the ones this company churns out. They know what will make them money, and what their main audience wants. Illumination movies never make me feel anything. Just...eh. No sadness, no anger, no joy, just...eh. I know I'm probably overreacting and treating this like the worst thing ever, but I basically want to say that a movie should make you feel something. If you give something a 10/10, think about other films like 'Up' and 'Toy Story' and 'How to Train Your Dragon', and look back at Illumination's movies. They won't shape you as a person, like those films did. They won't make you feel anything, or shed a tear, like 'Toy Story 3', 'Up' and 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' did. They just pander to little children and their parents. But that's not what a movie should be, not even a kids' movie. It should make you emotional, be memorable. So look back at 'The Secret Life of Pets' and 'Minions' and realise that Illumination just aren't on par with companies like Pixar. Not at all. I'll shut up now, while we wait for the next bland piece of tofu/disgusting tripe Illumination throws at us.… Expand

And yet, "Despicable Me" became a huge success, and good for it, because it's a fantastic film. It's hilarious, features some great, memorable characters, beautiful animation and is backed by some great voice acting. Most importantly, "Despicable Me" is a ton of fun, and it's got amazing broad appeal for both children and adults. Some might disagree with me giving it such a high score, but "Despicable Me" is a fantastic animated film that you should definitely watch.… Expand

At a time when we had the likes of 'Toy Story 3' and 'How to Train Your Dragon', a time when Pixar and Dreamworks ruled supreme (Pixar winning of course), along came Illumination Entertainment and gave us this supervillain animation.

TheAt a time when we had the likes of 'Toy Story 3' and 'How to Train Your Dragon', a time when Pixar and Dreamworks ruled supreme (Pixar winning of course), along came Illumination Entertainment and gave us this supervillain animation.

The plot is pretty unoriginal really, jumping on the over used superhero theme. A supervillain is getting old and rusty, losing his flare for evil, at the same time a younger new supervillain threatens his status. So he devises a plan to steal the moon, the greatest feat of supervillainy he can come up with. But in order to carry out this plan he must enlist (adopt) the help of three very young little girls.

The whole superhero concept has been popular now for quite some time and in CGI animation its no different. Along with other similar flicks such as 'The Incredibles' and 'Megamind' the whole idea is beginning to feel a little swamped I can't deny. This film mainly centres on the supervillains point of view, how he lives, his daily habits, his job being an evil mastermind etc...a nice angle that was original until later in the year when 'Megamind' came out.

At his side are an army of little yellow minions that look like old 8-bit video game characters not too dissimilar from Pac-Man. Now at first these little guys are quite amusing with their pratfalls, face slapping and general simple minded tomfoolery, but it wears thin fast. Their whole routine is the same all the way through the film and I'm sure even kids may tire of it. I'm not even sure what the hell they are suppose to be seeing as all other characters in this film are human.

I really liked the initial idea of this film and the start, I loved Gru's big Gothic house squeezed in between a line of regular houses. I liked his outrageously over sized supervillain vehicle, his little demon-like dog and the interior of his lair which was like a cross between James Bond and Hammer horror. Lots of ingenious gadgets, secret doors/trap doors etc...in a thick Gothic German expressionist-like design.

Unfortunately the film becomes way too sickly and sweet for me (yes I know its for kids mainly). After he adopts the three little girls and starts to realise he enjoys them being around, losing sight of his evilness, it just becomes quite lame frankly. The film isn't sure what it wants to be or where its going, even the humour begins to lag.

In the end all we're left with is a semi decent animated film which does look glorious no doubt, but with a plot that can't decide which route to go down. None of the characters are particularly interesting or fun, Steve Carell doesn't help make the evil Gru any more memorable and the old scientist character that works with him is dreadful!. He's actually quite scary looking I think, plus with that awful cockney accent from Brand...utter fail.

Very wishy washy kids film that struggles to keep you interested and in no way competes with the big guns. Clearly trying to be zany and full of fresh ideas but you can see its not really worked out, its not a bad film, its just rather flat and anti climatic. How on earth this film was popular I don't know, the sequel was no surprise but I just don't see the hype over this.… Expand

Despicable me has family message, with a family-friendly story-telling and inventive plot. Characters may be very simple, but it has an unforgettable main premise, is one of the greatest film of the year. Despite that it's technically well done, though very classic in choice of shots and angles (animation shouldn't be limited by that, seriously).
If you want to see a movie about the importance of family, the notion of family family and what happens when children appear in the life of an atypical family of outcasts/anti-heroes, watch Tokyo Godfathers. It does better than this with much, much less funds.… Expand

Despicable Me definitely has a lot of things going for it, including the minions, now they are funny gibberish speaking yellow things with glasses! The animation in this film is charming and stylized. The action in this film is something that happens quite a lot, being comedic, 'in your face' and, well, action-y (that's a good thing). Why is it that the villains of a film also make for more memorable and worthwhile characters? This is pretty much what the film surrounds itself with, all these villains attempting to outdo each other by becoming the greatest villain ever known.
Steve Carell voices Gru, an evil mastermind who isn't feeling quite as evil these days, someone has stolen the Great Pyramid, and is now considered the greatest villain in the world, much to the dismay of Gru.
The thief in question is Vector (Jason Segel) who seems like an accidental villain, simple minded and naive. but with the typical evil lair that is just too funny to ignore, sharks, missiles and hidden rooms, the film is rich with cliche but knows that it is, making it that much more enjoyable.
Gru aims to better the pyramid raid by stealing the moon, thats right, the moon. With the help of his trusted mad scientist Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand) and his hilarious minions called the, er.. Minions, he hatches a plan to finally be called the best.
But when he must infiltrate Vectors lair to retrieve a sonic ray that reduces the size of any object, he is upstaged by all the gadgets on show, so he adopts three orphan girls so as he can get them to deliver robot cookies to the house so as he can move forward with his plan. But who knew he was going to pick the most loveable and funniest of the bunch.
Agnes is the smallest of the trio, and by far the funniest, she sees and believes things that the others don't, and truly sees a father figure in Gru.
It's difficult for a fresh comedy to come in and leave a lasting impression without falling into the same routine of previous attempts, but the film manages to take a very popular and gestated idea and basically poke fun at its own absurdity, and that is where the true laughter lies in this film, the fast-paced animation we are used to seeing in a Pixar film are present here, mixed with a perfect variation of characters and a brilliant voice cast that also includes Julie Andrews and Will Arnett.
A truly funny and original film has been created with Despicable Me, it has the absurdity and laughter of a one-liner comedy but the heart and assurance of a Pixar classic, without being a Pixar film.… Expand

Here lies the charm of the movie, the amazingly well develop characters, and with this I not only refer to the protagonist and antagonist, I also refer to the girls, the old scientist and the minions; all this bunch of captivating characters during the film, manage to break their stereotype. This release of the characters is the most remarkable concepts of this picture, because nowadays the protagonists are typecast and their development is linear or zero. This achievement should be awarded, the director and writers of Despicable Me have come back to the classics. This is what the animation filmmakers must learn, the pillar of cartoon production is a character that breaks his stereotype and evolve to an original form.… Expand

Despicable Me has some genuine humour and the animators look like they had fun making it. The characters and movie moments are fun and will have kids and some adults giggling throughout. Despicable Me is a sometimes predictable yet hilarious piece of cinema with stellar voice acting, a laugh-inducing script, and some of the best animation this side of PIxar.

Pretty darn brilliant! I greatly enjoyed this film, with Carell dishing out superb voice talent. It struggles to get off the ground initially, but it takes off after 10 mins or so. This story is so funny and the supporting characters reallyPretty darn brilliant! I greatly enjoyed this film, with Carell dishing out superb voice talent. It struggles to get off the ground initially, but it takes off after 10 mins or so. This story is so funny and the supporting characters really light up the screen, in particular the three little girls along with the hilariously slapstick minions. Then, suddenly, the film's emotional fist slugs you right in the gut, full force, and this "evil" comedy quickly turns to an unconditional, parental-love story.… Expand

A colourful and enchanting animation it certainly is, but it's nowhere near the quality of animation giants like Pixar. Not only this, but it's very forgettable and nothing special.
