Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Netflix’s adaptation of Death Note turned an intellectual psychological series that had you pondering about every second, into a romance and a thriller. The characters the fans that were attracted by this american wash were lost in the attempt to crush a series into less then two hour movie, and they were left possibly the generic plotine and concept of the death note. The once questionably sociopathic Light Yagami had a grip on everything he was doing throughout the series due to his cunning as his belief that he would would one day be god made him invincible. Light Turner enjoyed killing the man who killed his mother and used the death note further to kill criminals as a duty, but his delusions of grandeur (as I like to see them ) were no more than thoughts. Light Turner struggled with his morality so much I wasn’t sure by the end whether he had given up because he was simply tired of being Kira, or whether he was standing by all his murders and would have denied had he could.
It lacks the battle between L and Kira for one another’s identities’. The Mia Sutton and Light Turner romance subplot took up time that could have been spent in many different ways, like the task force, which was left out for much of the second half. The way Light Turner introduced Mia to the death note, Mia being a near stranger was highly abrupt. There was absolutely no development of their romance, considering it was a big part of the movie they could’ve talked a little more. There was kissing where there could’ve been even a second of plot development, which it was obvious they only wanted to attract more romantics and less nerds. I actually made a joke about one of the scenes “Light Yagami: I only pretend to like your boobs Misa so people think I’m normal. Light Turner: It’s kinda hard to finger you while I’m killing people.” Mia became deeply obsessed with the note, more than I wish Light had I as actually highly enjoyed the series and did not like this version where Misa(Mia) has harder control over what she wants. Mia blackmails Light into handing her the note after she killed several agents, Wateri, then wrote down his name, portraying her as an enemy then again this show’s antagonist are really blurred. The movie without having had seen the original series is rushed, and character dynamics. I will not be watching the sequel. It’s worth to go and re-watch the anime with a friend

Like most people, I'm sure, I went into viewing this movie with fairly low expectations. I've read the manga and watched the anime and after viewing the trailer I could tell that this was going to be a retelling of the story. Needless to say, this movie is not good. Even if you can distance yourself from the fact that they completely botched the source material and the obvious white washing, this movie has many things wrong with it. Firstly, the acting was pretty bad unless this movie was supposed to be a comedy. Nat Wolff, who plays Light Turner, does a really terrible job of conveying any type of emotion. His reaction to seeing Ryuk, the demon voiced by Willem Dafoe, is probably the highlight of this movie if we consider it a horribly done, dark comedy. Lakeith Stanfield, who plays L, seems constantly struggling to remember his lines. There were very odd pauses in his dialogue that constantly broke the flow of scenes and, once again, added a slight tint of unaware humor to seemingly serious scenarios. Margaret Qualley did an alright job for the most part in her role as Mia in comparison to most of the other main cast. I'm not saying she's up for any awards, but at least she didn't seem completely out of place. Willem Dafoe did a decent job in voicing Ryuk, but like most of the movie, I believe his direction was a bit off, which is where a majority of the movie has its issues. Adam Wingard and his group of writers failed to create a coherent atmosphere for such a monumental, already well established story. I could continue to go on, but I'm trying to keep spoilers out of this. Throughout watching Death Note (2017) I constantly either had a bad taste in my mouth or giggling at the atrocious spectacle that was playing out on my television. Don't watch this movie unless you want to see a train wreck. Especially avoid it if you're a fan of the series. Watch it drunk and/or with friends to have a few laughs. Once again, America has botched a decent Japanese story with their own creative hubris. Terrible. Expand

And I won't hate on this by comparing it to the source material because that hasn't poisoned the well, it's a listless and pastiche execution of a film without a soul on its own merits without even beginning a comparison.

Maraget Qualley is a stunner though, and it's a crying shame her acting is limper even than her Kristen Stewart prototype; I might not have made it to the end without at least her to look at.

I'm giving it 2 because the visual style was at least a little appealing even if the dark, blurry close-up shots of the characters were an eye-watering failed landing at atmosphere.

Well the story isI was thinking of giving it a 4 due to its good visual effect despite the awful story and characters, but my bf gave it a 6, which pissed me off, so I register this site and comment for the first time to "balance it out". Well the story is terrible even if not compared with the brilliant original work. First the Light is stupid and weak, knowing nothing but shouting and running. FFS it's not supposed to be an action movie! Second Misa is one of my favorite female characters in all time, but was turned out to be a **** in the movie. Where's my cute and selflessly silly Misa?! And this L... I can't see how much he used his brains, but with the plot armor, he did find Kira out in a min (Lucky you this is a stupid Light). Yeah Ryuk must be the best character in this movie. And some death scenes are good. Besides what I said above, I suggest you guys to go watch the two-part Japanese movies Death Note if you can find it. It basically followed the original story and offered a convincing adaption too. Ok, now I need to review the anime for some peace of heart. Expand

L is irrational and makes stupid decisions. It seems like the only quality they kept from the Manga/Anime was his love for candy. Light does nothing to divert attention from himself being suspected of being Kira (in fact, when asked if he is Kira, he pretty much just says "Yup."). Poor acting (that screaming scene...) also didn't do the movie any favors. It turned a story about physiological cat and mouse into a teen love story. On top of that, the romance is INCREDIBLY forced. Boy meets girl. Literally 20 seconds after introducing themselves, Light shows Mia the Deathnote. What?? Why!? That's right... Because this Light is an idiot kid. In fact, Mia is more like Light Yagami than Light Turner is.

Willem Dafoe was fantastic and the only redeeming quality of this movie. His voice acting is spot on, and the CGI of Ryuk is great. Perfect mix of spooky and familiar. However, we barely ever see him.

The soundtrack is a whole other issue. No one wants 80s rock in Death Note. The trailer made the music sound so promising. The trailer featured a new rendition of "Bittersweet Symphony" and it was wonderful. It fit the mood perfectly. However, IT WAS NEVER USED IN THE MOVIE! Overall, it was quite sad to see that a movie given all the chance in the world at being incredibly successful turned out so poorly. Poor writing decisions and a directory taking WAY too many "creative" liberties tanked what could have been a real gem of a movie.

Light Turner? He is pretty stupid and acts like a **** sometimes. He doesnt resemble Yagami Light even a bit. Second of all, Yagami Light doesnt really have feelings for the people around him since he is so focused on changing the world .He never loved Misa even if they were engaged, he only used her for his goals. What the **** is this love story in this movie? Mia(Misa) seems smarter than Light Turner which is already ****ed up. Misa from original Death note is stupid compared to Light . They also destroyed L, yes the guy everyone loves in the original show. It's true he eats sweets and stays in the same position but that's all.
Ryuk is a ****ing psycho for god sake, they changed his whole behavior. I hoped that this movie is gonna show that kind of fight between Kira and L like in the anime, the fight between the 2 genius, of course in a different kind of story because hollywood...
They added new rules and....so many wrong things with this movie I swear to god, I didnt enjoy even a bit of it.

I mean, the only thing interesting was that guy Ryuk. Is the only one you are expecting to see. The main character, Light Turner, looks like he is not even developed. Is just a random guy who out of the blue starts killing people. And L, he is supposed to be a super detective. If you are a fan of Sherlock, you'll find that the L must be for Laughable.
It's a bad adaptation just to make easy money.
And im pretty sure that fans will feel insulted. Bad acting, bad writing, poorly executed, some good visuals, and that's all.
Terrible and mediocre.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This movie has an amazing story to work with, but they completely mess it up. Every character is badly written and utterly miscast except for Ryuk.
I thought Willem Defoe did a great job as Ryuk and i wish he took up more screen time because i could not stand any other character.
It's pretty clear that the writers and director did not study the source-meterial well.
The music in this movie was so weird and inappropriate.
The acting wasn't very good either. They really missed the tone of this movie. I wanted to see a clever conversation between 2 geniuses but all i got was a chase scene between an average detective and a dumb high school cuck.
Apart from some nice shots and Ryuk this movie was a laughable disaster.
A generous: 2/10.

There are two ways to judge this movie. As a Death Note adaptation: FAILS in every possible way.

As a separate story outside of the Death Note universe: It’s a GOOD MOVIE.

I liked the fact, that this is a more realistic perspective of a boy who finds the death note. We already had an anime about Light Yagami, no need to repeat the same story. I saw it, as a new protagonist, and for me it works. Also, just look at that chemistry between Mia and Light!!! Who doesn’t want a GF like that? :D

It’s NOT A PERFECT movie. But it doesn’t deserve all the salt it received....

Not bad, but not great. Very minor spoilers.

Based on review scores, I went into this expecting it to be another terrible adaptation of a popular anime, which Western film makers are infamous for. I was pleasantly surprised. It's hardly a 10/10 film of course, but the visual style was pleasant to my taste and fairly true to what I remember of the source material. I was most impressed with Ryuk, the death god. , and I thought the acting was decent at its worst moment. The plot suffered from trying to condense too much into one movie and without having read any in detail reviews yet, I suspect this is where most people have issues with the film. They weren't bad enough to completely break the film for me. I suspect fans of the anime are putting it on too high a pedestal. They seem to forget it had problems itself. The entire second half sucked.

Edit: Having read through several of the negative reviews, I can see a major gripe was the adaptation having a different plot from the original. I have no problem with this as long as the spirit of the original is captured, and I think it basically is. The core message of Death Note is that you can't make the world perfect. There is always some kind of catch, a lesser evil, or a cloud in every silver lining. I also see a lot of criticisms of how the characters were written and of the plot. These are legitimate, but I stand by my original argument that fans are being too hard on the adaptation and looking at the source material through the rose coloured glasses of nostalgia.

Once again, live-action anime movies suck major balls. Except for the Japanese ones, of course. Go watch those instead of this steaming pile of goat ****

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting a japanese movie so I am not as much dissapointed as I expected to be. Japanese live actions are also not too successful. Actually this film is too short which not allows to adapt such a piece of art like Death Note, but I saw some potential in this movie (I like L and Light seems not so perfect as he is in manga). But there is one thing that this adaptaion is missing: it`s not a love story, not a teen`s love tragedy, it`s a simple question to ask -> "...I am a trembling creature or whether I have the right …" F. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I personally do not have an issue with director's choice of choosing a different story to follow since the Death Note may be owned by almost anyone in the world. The acting in the film is not a major issue, but L's actor and Light's father are sometimes too stiff when interacting with the other characters in the film. My major gripe with the film was the pacing, however. We are expected to believe that Watari and L have a deep relationship with each other from youth, and that Mia and Light are young lovers following her seeing the Death Note, but something about it seems wrong. Watari deserved more screen-time with L, and I feel that Mia's motives for wanting the Death Note are too extreme when compared to Light's own desires. The ending was slightly predictable in that Light would likely control what happens, but seeing it unravel was still enjoyable. There seems to be a lot of freedom concerning how deaths are controlled in this Death Note adaptation, much to the point that the characters' actions in the film seem unfair. In the ending, Light essentially cheated his death by controlling the paper his girlfriend, Mia, had previously written his name on by causing the paper to burn in a nearby fire. It was an enjoyable movie overall. The movie is not terribly bad as most people make it out to be, but it is no masterpiece either. If you are hell-bent on seeing an adaptation of the manga/anime, do not raise your hopes. The movie disappointingly falls short in engaging the audience as the anime/manga have done by opting for a more action-driven narrative. I am interested to see what a possible sequel might hold since the film ends on a cliff-hanger, but I do hope that characters in the film aside from Light are fleshed out more. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hollywood shows again that they are the best in messing up a popular anime. Death Note reminds me of the dragon ball or street fighter movies which were no where near the real anime.
The death note normally has only 5 rules written in it everything else Light finds out himself by testing and asking ryuk. In the movie the death note contains over 100 rules.
The main character "Light" should be a very intelligent guy who doesn't care about the feelings of other people nor is he interested in having a girlfriend. He is a very popular guy that everybody respects because he always finds the right words to say to the people to like him. He is a very athletic guy who is good in pretty much every sport and he is also really good at fighting because his original goal was to get a high position in the police.
Hollywood ripped this interesting character off and made him to a typical highschool student that is very uncomfortable with other people. The only thing they kept was that he is good in school (at least he does the homework for other people which actually doesn't have to mean he is good in school), he isn't able to fight nor is he able to seduce every girl like he did in the anime. He is a coward who gets scared pretty easily (he got very scared when he saw ryuk and didn't know who he is and what he wants while in the anime he got scared cause ryuk was sneaking up on him but he already knew who he is an what he wants. Also he gets shocked when he sees someone die while in the anime he didn't care about that because he is already a part of the police so he already saw many corpses) and overall he doesn't seem to be a very intelligent person because he takes the death note out wandering around so that people can see him reading it. As soon as a girl saw him reading the book he told her everything about the book. In the anime Light rarely took the book outside of his room nor did he tell anyone about it.
In the anime I was always astonished how Light was able to figure out every single step "L" is going to do while in the movie I am astonished of how dumb he is compared to the anime version.
I had mixed feelings about the anime Light cause of him being a emotionless, high intelligent person he gave me a feeling that he is a psychopath and after all it should be all about him being a psycho who wants to be a god that decides who lives and who dies. In the movie you get a psychopathic vibe just for a minute when you see all the people he killed and he says he wants to be called a god afterwards he acts kind of normal again.
L also doesn't seem to be as intelligent as in the anime. In the anime watari does every task for L because L doesn't leave the hotel he is staying at to not expose himself. His way of finding out in which city kira(Light) is living and how he kills people is also way more interesting than in the movie and it wouldn't need more time to explain it so they can't use time as an excuse for that.
In the anime Kira started experimenting with his targets (about 10 people) so he can see what he can make them do and what not and afterwards he decided to kill all his victims with heart attacks so people know that those criminals were killed by Kira. This is the reason why everybody thought that Kira can only kill people with an heart attack and because of that he was sort of able to cover his tracks from L. In the movie Kira was killing over 400 people in many different ways but he wasn't killing anyone with a heart attack which made this cat and mouse game pretty boring.

Although I wrote so much it is only a little inside of what was wrong with the movie. There are way more flaws that made me upset because the anime was actually perfectly filled with excitement for the whole time while the movie got boring from time to time. What made me the most upset was that they changed some rules of the book:

1. Touching the book makes the Shinigami(Ryuk) visible for the person. (not a rule in the film)
2. You only lose the ownership of the book when you say you give up your ownership to the Shinigami and afterwards you lose your memory. (In the movie you lose your ownership after being seperated from the book for 7 days)
3. If the death of someone written in the book would cause someone else to die, the victim will die of an heart attack (In the film someone killed himself with a grenade while people were around him and they probably also died)
4. Once you write someone in the book he will be killed no matter what. (In the film you can apparently save only one person by burning the page he was written in)

There are way more rules they changed or ignored. The 2 day rule is actually a 23 day rule and them not using "The eyes" was also kind of sad.
In the end this movie is a disaster for all Death Note fans and not exciting enough for people that don't know about Death Note. The actors was also bad cause he shouldn't give away anything with his facial expression but he failed at it horribly.

That's why I hate when Hollywood decide to make a movie of an manga story, they don't know how to deal with it, they disrespect all the fans and the autor of the original story putting their dumb ideas in one story that's already perfect, just needs some adaptation to be a movie, but that's not what they do, they read (or not) the story, then they ignore everything that the autor intented to pass with it, and they put their own yearnings for a story that isn't even of them!! This is very unprofessional, because you can't change the essence of a story, first because isn't your story, so you need to respect the autor, and second because you'll destroy all what it means. It's a horrible movie, with a horrible plot, actors and effects. Hollywood should stop being so dumb Expand

I absolutely loved the story line, very unexpected. I really loved the character L, he was very interesting, witty and very different. Light on the other hand was your typical teenager who's emotions were sometimes heard to read. It almost put me in the mindset of Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt with demonic character always lingering around. I definitely would watch again. Expand
