If you are a pedophile then you will love this movie. Seriously its disgusting. #boycottcuties #boycottnetflix.

That it was targeted by QAnon (a right-wing conspiracy cult) for that purpose, just before a big US election, makes it even more so, and raises questions about QAnon's financial backers (GOP, Putin, N.Korea...?). The film shows the desperate loneliness of a preteen girl from a traditional, Puritanical society with messages like "hell is mainly populated by women who show too much" trying to grow up in a liberal society with social media telling her she's the object of constant male desire. Her acting out after her father takes a 2nd wife is diagnosed by her imam as "There is no Devil here." QAnon followers should see that for themselves. Expand

Great film and a lot more nuanced than the general public would have you believe, full of excellent performances. The 0 and 1 star reviews are clearly all from people who have not seen the film. Conservative Yanks are so predictably pathetic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Connection terminated, im sorry to interupt you Elizabeth, if you still even remember that name. But im afraid youve been misinformed. You are not here to recieve a gift, nor have you been called here by the individual you assume, altough you have indeed been called. You have all been called here, into a labyrinth of sounds and smells, misdirection and misfortune. A labyrinth with no exit, a maze with no prize. You dont even realise that you are trapped, your lust for blood has driven you in endless circles chasing the cries of children in some unseen chamber, always seeming so near... Yet somehow out of reach. But you will never find them, none of you will. This is where your story ends. And to you, my brave voluenteer, who somehow found this job listing not intended for you. Altough there was a way out planned for you, i have a feeling thats not what you want. I have a feeling that you are right where you want to be. I am remaining as well, i am nearby. This place will not be remembered, and the memory of everything that started this can finally begin to fade away, as the agony of every tradegy should. And to you monsters trapped in the corridors. Be still, and give up your spirits, they dont belong to you. For most of you i belive there is peace, and perhaps more waiting for you after the smoke clears. Altough for one of you, the darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow you whole, so dont keep the devil waiting, old friend. My daughter, if you can hear me, i knew you would return as well, its in your nature to protect the innocent. Im sorry that on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up into their arms the way you lifted others into yours. And then, what become of you. I should have known you wouldnt be content to dissapear. Not my daughter, i couldnt save you then, so let me save you now. Its time to rest, this ends, for all of us. End communaction. Expand

Cuties premiered earlier this year to acclaim and awards. Once American audiences got wind of it, they lost it. Figures since we've all been stuck at home and Americans seem to make a problem out of everything, whether it's warranted or not.

Picture this: You're at the age teetering on teenagedom, living with a traditional family, you're the doting child and the kids at school are exploring their individuality. Don't you want to be like them? You see the ones carted off to the principal for rebelling against authority. 11-year-old Amy is just that. Her father has taken a second wife, her mother struggles to accept this, and her Auntie believes in the old-fashioned ways of women staying home to support their husbands.

At school, Amy sees four of her classmates, Angelica, Coumba, Jess and Yasmine, aspiring to be famous dancers, their troupe known as the titular "Cuties", by entering a local contest. These girls wear low-cut dresses and short shorts, emulating what they see online. Angelica becomes Amy's first friend and her first encounter with standing out on her own. Alongside the others, Amy begins acting out, dressing provocatively and getting into all kinds of mischief. But they're kids, it's like the old (wildly outdated) adage "boys will be boys".

The sexualization of these children is condemned but there are a few characters – either minor or voiceless – who seem to be expies of what American audiences have perceived the film's demographic to be. They are generally looked on by the lens as degenerate, namely a middle-aged laser-tag employee and a random spectator during the finale dance competition.

Yes, Netflix screwed up big-time on the advertising but Cuties is much more than what that trailer shows. The scene where Amy's mother strikes her is something any parent would do when they find out their child has been parading around like an undesirable and attacking classmates (the instance in question here being a confrontation between Amy and a male student which ends with her stabbing his hand with a pencil). Personally, I believe in corporal punishment so hit away.

There's a scene in which Amy gets into a brawl with an older classmate and the Internet is trying to tear into it with "they pulled down her pants and it's SeXuAl!" Have you never been bullied? Is your existence so perfect you haven't been humiliated by a suggestive picture circulating around school? I have, and the moment is not meant to be seen in a sexual nature. But y'know people online, they riot without logic.

While the cinematography is less than unwelcome to any viewer (even myself, a gay man, I was cringing), the rest of the film feels real. This isn't your Hollywood blockbuster where everything is a fantasy. European cinema knows when and how hard to make something stick. Fathia Youssouf is a rising star in Amy, with a fierce but relatable character many of us can see ourselves in. I truly hope people can see Cuties for more than its misaimed marketing, and I look forward to what Maïmouna Doucouré has in store for the future. Those who will inevitably downvote this review, please get a brain. Although it's not bloody likely.

I LOVE this movie, and I wish more people would notice its beauty! Cuties is an AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL movie that supports women empowerment (MORE GENDER EQUALITY PLEASE!) and I wish it was shown in movie theaters all over the globe in every country ever. Not just Netflix. The little girls are so cute and adorable, I would hug them instead of a horrific demon trying to pretend to be a young girl. (Looking at you, whoever the freak the secondary character from that horrific Demon Slayer series. Why do people love you so, you attempted to murder your brother) It also gives us an awesome and important life lesson: to accept kids and hold on tight to who they are, and not to oversaturate them. We need more live action movies these days. I'm sick of ugly ol animation, screw people trying to defend it and make it get a foot in the door. Those people make me want to throw up. Let's get the beautiful story and visuals of Cuties more marketed and shown off so more people could appreciate it for once. I would also like to mention this work of art encouraged me to become a professional dancer, and I love to twerk non stop every day. Expand

Most of the people slating this clearly haven't watched it and wouldn't be capable of watching it due to the fact it doesn't tell you what to think. It's complex enough but hey, you can think for yourself, right? It's a good movie, well crafted, well acted, and it doesn't deserve to be caught up in all this. Glad I watched it and hope I see more films by the director. With regards to the sexualisation of kids, (for me) whilst this was clearly important it was a part of something bigger theme-wise and I'll stop there as I hate reviews that tell you too much or tell you what you're supposed to think. I thought it was a really good movie! Watch it and see what you think..... Expand

It's clear that the vast majority of 'reviews' on here are by people who've either never seen the film, or have and just put it upon themselves to declare it 'sickening' etc and jump on the 'boycott netflix' bandwagon.

However, in truth, the movie is incredibly thought provoking and (of course) very disturbing.
It was made to push boundaries and teeter on the edge of acceptability.
And I guess it was also made to be offensive..

As a film, the acting is good, the narrative is decent, the direction is excellent but the quality of the cinematography varies. At no point does is the viewer allowed to 'feel', the message is blunt and blatant. But, again, it's a purposeful choice.

Ultimately though it IS a film, and and such made for entertainment value and not educational purposes. I think if the subject matter was the topic of a no holds barred Netflix documentary, people wouldn't have been so disturbed by what they were watching.
As a movie, for entertainment, i'm not annoyed I took the time to watch. As a means to delve into the characters, what they're going through, their lives, choices, pain, fear and ultimate triumphs.... To understand things.... It's going to get people talking.

It must have been since Baise-Moi in 2000 that the public was so outraged about a film. Which is, in a way, understandable: sexualization of children is not something that should be taken lightly or even accepted at all. But that's exactly the director's point: teenage girls in search for identity are naively mimicking what half the social media world is doing all the time: selling sex. These artists promote their sexualized image as an expression of body awareness, female power and independence, but it's an inconvenient fact that they're influencing teenage girls into thinking that that is the way they should behave to be somebody. A few years ago I had a relationship with a woman with an 8 year old daughter. A friend from school came over and they were playing 'makeover'. So they occupied the bathroom for an hour and came back dressed and behaving much like the girls depicted in this movie. I was totally shocked! At that moment I realized the extent of social media's influence on young girls.

What you see in this film is a fact of life, this stuff has been happening for real, for years. And the film maker is drawing attention to this with a fist on your face. People seeing this as pedophilia are not getting the point I'm afraid. Could this film have made its point without depicting these dancing scenes? I don't think it could have. Unfortunately the message will probably also get lost with the public outrage it has now caused. In hindsight they might have filmed it with a bit more subtlety. But then again, sometimes controversy like this is needed to wake up the sleeping masses.

I recommend this movie.

Granted, you DO require a bit of a brain to understand the critical angle, alas. Since the dance scenes can easily be skipped - as they ARE uncomfortable - the coming of age story, the portrayal of immigrants' life and a kid looking for a way to belong at any cost - with a surprisingly positive ending. It's not the bestest movie ever, by any means, but it is worth a watch. But, you know, if you do, you must be a pedo. Same as if you watch a movie in which a kid kills anyone, you must be a serial killer, secretly, inside. Expand

Its specifically meant to make the audience mad and repulsed. The gratuitousness is specifically to upset the audience and yes to draw in viewers. That way the message can actually be delivered. Without it, its delivering its message to an empty theater.

Yet it accurately depicts how many girls in this age do in fact act and express their confused, emerging sexuality. The movie has a fairly important message to convey. Even if its message is not as well defined as it should be, it does get its broad strokes in. With how much bloated controversy around it as has been drummed up it seems like its been fairly successful in what it was setting out to accomplish.

I will say this, it REALLY reminds me of the movie KIDS. It hits in much of the same way. An under the radar indie film that ends up causing an initial moral panic. We can look at Kids and many films of a similar vein that came before it and potentially see what Cuties may be viewed as in a few years when the shock value of it wears off as public perception of immoral behavior continues to erode where this level of disgusting is going to be seen as quaint. (yes, sadly, that day IS on its way) Once you strip that shock value away, you are only left with the remaining message and it is a slightly above average delivery of its message.

So it really feels like getting upset by how the film goes about all of this is like blaming the coffee table because you stubbed your toe. It was there the whole time. You've passed by it a million times without ever paying attention. Its just the one time that it gets in your way that you notice it and who else are you going to blame for it being there?

Honestly if it were not for peoples absolutely ridiculous knee jerk reactionism to this the film would be about a 4.5 but I gave an natural 5.5 and then rounded up to counter balance the absolute review shellacking this has gotten by people who clearly have not nor will ever watch it but wont let that stop them from having a "I will die on this hill" opinion about it. Its not a terrible film at its core and time will be the only actual judge if it is already doomed, or becomes a Kids level cult (pun only minorly intended) favorite. People complaining that they shouldn't use sexualization to bring awareness of sexualization are the same ones who think people trying to bring about a revolution for the good of people have no reason to be anything but civil, peaceful, quiet, and orderly. Sorry, but you clearly don't get how that works. Yes, sexualizing children is not acceptable but lets not kid ourselves, we will be seeing this sort of garbage from Disney in the next 10-15 years and if you don't think so then you are already lost and beyond hope of being saved. You cant fight against the darkness if you spend your entire life staring into the light till you are blind. Its NOT good, but its not THAT bad either. Anyone claiming it is, is over exaggerating a sense of faux offense because they liked it a little more than they should have.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Perhaps the most divisive movie I've ever seen in a movie promoted by a mainstream platform, and I can understand it. The movie is supposed to show the lost innocence of a sheltered girl as she gains power through sexual dance, and it completely changes who she is and her previous identity. It shows the rise to grotesque underage sexuality that is prominent in underage pageants and dance contests, but it goes too heavy handed on showing the actual issues wrong with it. There are multiple dance scenes with provocative shots, and at some point the film becomes what it's trying to comment on. I don't think it's a film for pedophiles, but I think it went about the message incorrectly. Expand

I think Cuties is a failed film in allWhile I feel like the furor that was sparked by all the controversy surrounding this film after Netflix's brutally unfortunate and incredibly stupid marketing work was far more dramatic than necessary. I think Cuties is a failed film in all its most basic aspects.

Cuties is certainly a coming of age story. After all, it's portraying a reality that we know happens to many young girls, that they're not even tweens.
Many people would like to believe that this is not the case, but their denial is equally harmful as it is dangerous.

The point here is that the film chose to be a poor show, rather than something with substance, and therefore any kind of message is completely lost.

Perhaps the problem with Cuties is that due to its poor visual handling, it prevents people from asking the pertinent questions.

I cannot assure you that that was the director's intention, but when the public decides to be scared by how the little girls are portrayed in this film, especially the way in which the film focuses on their bodies while they dance suggestively, they forget a key point: This happens and sometimes with the blessing of their parents.

We are seeing these girls practicing for a dance competition in which they'll perform extremely inappropriate dances for their age and end up doing it, it's a competition with an audience.

Do you stop to ask why this competition is happening? Obviously organized by adults.
They're allowing little girls to appear in this way on that stage.
And don't you think that among the crowd are pedophiles recording them with their phones?

As I said, it doesn't seem that Cuties is trying to ask those questions, but evidently in me as a viewer it provokes them and while people are more worried shouting that Netflix and the producers are promoting the hypersexualization of minors, they omit to criticize the society that it provokes it.

Today the innocence of children is destroyed by the pressure generated by living on social media. And if the adults are really concerned about this happening to these children, they should also start to care about the environment that causes it and I'm telling all this for parents who give children access to smartphones and social media without any kind of supervision.

In short, Cuties doesn't contribute to anything. It's not a good story and it's not a good film.
I think it did tried to expose a dark subject but inevitably got lost in its poor and irresponsible way of presenting it.

Right intentions, but rather awful execution.

I'll start off by saying I do believe the intentions of the filmmakers were positive. There are undoubtedly minors being exposed to similar themes to that of the film, so it's imperative that people - particularly parents - are made aware of this.

With that said, 'Cuties' goes about it in entirely the wrong way. The message, which does become clear at the end, is to stop the exploitation of children - yet here they are doing just that. There are scenes and/or camera angles that simply should not have been filmed and shown. There is no need for certain shots.

More should've been left for the viewer to work out, as opposed to shoving it into our faces and therefore practically doing what they are criticising. For example, they could've zoomed away at particular points or got an extreme close up of the characters' eyes when they were doing sexualised things.

For what it's worth, I will say I respect the performance of lead Fathia Youssouf (Amy) - I felt a fair amount of emotion from her at certain points. None of the other cast members stick out in my memory, though none produce anything negative.

I've spent a long time thinking about how I was going to word my review, much longer than I usually would at least. It's slightly tricky as, as mentioned, I do believe it intended to do the right thing. Unfortunately though, it ends up - in my eyes - doing what it's trying to say is bad.

There are some extreme thoughts on this film, not all of which are right in my opinion. However, as said, it isn't a good watch - even if only judging on film merits.

I think this movie has some sort of message, but that gets skewed by the twerking 11 year olds, the cringy dances in general, and a whole lot of other stuff. I think that showing the disparity between the two worlds of religious conservatism and modern individualism, especially with the wide availability of smartphones, is an interesting concept, but it's just terribly executed here. Besides the controversy of sexualising children, I was confused by the movie's pacing. A clearer divide between the two worlds would've been nice to show. Also the characters act completely irrational for their personalities, Amy, the protagonist, almost kills another girl. Jesus Christ.
I know I'm going on dangerous turf by giving this movie more than a 0, but it had some alright tones here and there, but everything else is either boring or absolutely terrible.

This movie is as confusing as the main character's mind, and or her journey.

But I believe you have to watch it in order to pass a judgement.

It's almost unbearable for the first 30 mins, and it will be even more shocking when the little girls in this movie started doing twerking and some overly provocative dance moves.

More often than not I don't feel sympathise with the characters in this movie, although I believe this kind of life exists somewhere in our world.

The girls acting more like a thug than a 7th grader, although in real life the casts are around 14-15 years old, but the character they portraited are a bunch of 11 years old, who's acted not like they're supposed to be.

I quite like the ending where the main character decided to ditched everything, and be like a normal kid again, it's quite a surprise since she's also not a lovable character that you will like, or relate to.

It's hard to enjoy this movie, especially if you have a young daughter, there are so many jaw opener scenes, cringe worthy moment, but if you can make it to the end than you are more than qualified to rate this movie, not just based on the trailer and everything.
(I'm not saying to despise those things, those things are what makes this movie so wrong on so many levels still)

If I can withdraw a positive aspect from this movie or the message they're trying to convey, is to always monitor your kids, do not do whatever the parents in this movie do, and if that's the message this movie trying to deliver, I believed they've done it well.

Its not just because of the half naked 11 year old girls doing inappropriate dances, its so boring, and the ending makes no **** sense. Its just a weird movie, that tries to touch upon an issue, and fails miserably. The only message I saw in this movie, was how much islam mistreats women. Since the husband marries another wife. And he doesn't care about how his daughter feels at all. The aunt just also acts like its normal, and acts like its a women's duty to support her husband, even if he is cheating on you. This movie is terrible, I reccomend you watch something else like The Pursuit of Happyness. Now that is an uplifting movie with a good message, this is just a movie that tries to be dark, and trys to show how we overly sexualize girls. Well newsflash what did you guys do in this movie, exactly that. Im giving it a three since the actors were good Amy was great, I really believed her performance. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get the director’s intention of wanting to bring awareness to the issue regarding young girls sexualising themselves due to being influenced by social media. The movie itself...doesn’t show that.

The movie itself made its original intent blurry. Is it trying to bring awareness to the issue by exposing the harsh truths or is it just a movie that relies on shock value to simply make audiences barf? The resolution itself is also unclear. The ending is just Amy reverting back to a normal girl and playing jump rope with other kids. But the other loose threads like what happened to the rest of the dance crew or if Amy ends up facing harsher consequences for her more questionable actions like posting a picture of her privates online or pushing Yasmine into a lake (thankfully not drowning).

The film itself is the example of presenting the problem (the sexualisation of young girls) and not giving a proper resolution for it.

And let’s not get into the rather questionable ethics of casting child actresses to do horrendous things like dancing sensually. Thank goodness nothing else bad happened (aside from, y’know, what they just did). Now I get that the movie is trying to expose brutal honesty, but for all their talk on how bad this is, the camera shots and angles glamourises it. It’s like trying to kill actual people just to say “murder is bad” or actually raping the actor/actress just to say “rape is bad”.

The only redeeming qualities are at least we know that we should be more aware of what children browse on social media, how sexualising oneself won’t give you actual freedom and to never let your children star in movies where they will be sexualised.

I would at least wish that the director can learn from her mistakes and hopefully not repeat it if she wants to make another movie. She may have created Cuties, but we al know she meant no actual malice (unlike the Sundance co-founder, who is much, MUCH worse).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am trying to be as objective as possible. First, there are no actual nude scenes, and the dancing although provocative in nature isn't all that risqué....well for an 18 year old....for an 11 year old, it's horrendous.

This movie is not about or for a young girl to grow through a shared experience with the protagonist. This movie is aimed at inattentive parents as it can lead to terrible lashing out and confusion for the young and growing children.

ALL THAT ASIDE. The dialogue is terrible, the acting is quite bad, the plot is ridiculous, and the story doesn't really lend itself a resolution and is just bad all over the place. This isn't a thought provoking movie, its needless and unnecessary on every level. I really don't understand why this was even allowed to air to be honest, but the sheer backlash from many is totally justifiable given that NONE of the provocative nature was ever needed to tell the story....just go watch thirteen instead of this crap if you're looking for a story and conversations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I felt disgusted watching this movie. One of the most disturbing movies I’ve watched ever. This movie is literal borderline pedophilic. There are scenes in the movie where they PURPOSEFULLY ZOOMED INTO THE REAR ENDS OF THE 11 YEAR OLD ACTRESSES TWERKING. There is even one scene where one of the actresses pulls her pants and undergarment down and takes a photo of her genitalia. WHAT. THE. **** The director of the movie is purposefully sexualizing these 11 year old actresses for her point of the movie, or rather the protagonist is to “rebel against her conservative family’s traditions”. I’m worried of the actresses being sexually abused during the filming of this movie, the mental trauma they probably have due to the movie. This is filthy and disgusting. And to the director of the movie, Maïmouna Doucouré, I hope you never make movies again. Expand

Some people really liked the move saying it’s a cute coming of age story, and others criticize the alleged sexualization of 11 year olds. So, I wanted to see for myself.

Ultimately, I would not recommend this movie. It is extremely sickening the way the 11 year olds are sexualized. Some people are saying that the point of the movie was to expose the way the west sexualizes the young, but to me that was the most sexualized movie of children I have ever seen. I gave the movie a 1 because I did think the story was good. I only wish the children where not sexualized in their dress and dance. I felt it was extremely uncomfortable and unnecessary to get the point across. Although, maybe that’s the difference between American culture and French culture. If you’re really curious, watch the movie for yourself to decide. I did from start to finish.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review is for the people who heard all the terrible things about this movie and are checking reviews to see if it's worth all the hate.

TLDR: The beginning shows promise of a meh social commentary but ultimately is destroyed by the ending and the over sexualization of children (read full review for explanation on why). Overall I wish I could get the time back and do something like watch grass grow.

Spoilers ahead.

The beginning we get to meet Any. She has some clear inner turmoil. She goes to church with her Muslim mother and family. We see the struggles of being an immigrant, and although it doesn't portray it very well it at least puts it in an understanding way. On the way back you meet this 11-year old wearing something you'd see in a cardi-B music video, dancing to pop music. This is the part where the movie starts to go downhill. This "Cuties" dance group storyline starts all while the Muslim storyline is going on as well. Although the storylines are juxtaposed of the different cultures at the beginning, towards the end it gets really confusing and incorhorent. Because of said confusion I'll focus on the theme of this movie. It is about ways adults impact children. Amy watches a cardi-B video and starts giving a laser tag employee a lap dance....ya that happens and for not good reason. I'm going to stop talking about the plot because it pretty much becomes derailed at this point and gets pretty disgusting. I would say about 50 minutes into the movie is where you would want to stop. My reasons for why i think this movie sexualizes and exploits children. You can show how 11- year olds can be influenced by adults in many different ways. The most important part is how this movie was filmed. Instead of filming reactions or at least wide shots focused on their faces they elect to focus on private parts of 11-year olds and the south end as well. The last 10 minutes of this movie is something Jeffery Epstein probably had on his phone. Not bad enough to get you thrown into jail but enough where you understand there's a problem. My point is that they did not film it to be a social commentary about how adults impact children in ways we don't always mean, instead it turns into children erotica . Honestly you take out Amy trying to commit murder for plot convenience, all the close up shots of children, and the multiple storylines. You have something that would help pass the time...but I would spend my time doing something else.

Overall this movie is like if Spider man 3 and Jeffery Epstein had a baby. To many storylines too much to follow and too much sexualization of children

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amy comes from a somewhat strict muslim family. She finds friends in a couple of girls, which strave to participate in a dance competition. So far, the general outline seems promesing: A hot topic in society and a 11 year old black girl.
Unfortunetly from there, the movie goes in a strange direction. While we get closer to Amy and begin to build up empathy and interest, the movie starts to throw questionable sexual depictions on the viewer. Displaying the girls in short dresses and doing adult stuff, like taking pictures of genitals, sexting, twerking, the story starts to loose its seriousness and crumbles. We have a failed lead character, who betrayed her friends just to present herself on stage. We have a mother, who respects her daughters decisions in the end. And we have a lot of weird stuff in between, which makes you want to report yourself to the authorities.
The Islam critic, and the attempt to distance oneself from the parents during puberty it the only notable, not disturbing, thing I found in this movie.

I really don't know, how anyone can thumb up this movie. This some displaying of underage girls which should be prosecuted. I don't, in any way, support what's going on here. Netflix should take a step back and in that turn, take the movie down.
If you think I may be overreacting. Watch for yourself. But be warned, if you don't want to feel criminal and guilty.

*underage girl undresses, takes a photo of her privates and sends it over the internet

Not going to check the spoiler box because, do you really care about spoilers?

This film reminded me in ways of the TLC show "Toddlers and Tiaras" (also not worth your time) and this film is probably worse.

i admit, i have not watched this movie, but i have no desire to either. "bUt hOw cAn yOu gIvE It A ZeRo iF yOu dIdN'T WaTcH It"

when all the negative reviews point out that the movie is filled with close-up shots of the kids' asses while they are twerking, i do not think i need to see the movie to know that it is that horrible. i am not going to watch this movie, for i have no desire to be put on some FBI watchlist.

apparently the peabrained defenders of this film say that the director is showing softcore child porn to show that pedophilia is bad. but since i refuse to believe that the director is that goddamn stupid, i'm going to assume that he is indeed a pedophile himself.

f*** every adult who allowed this movie to even exist. i wish hell existed so you would all burn in it.
