Pixar's first real lemon. Undeniably astounding visuals, but a very tired and ultimately unentertaining ride. Please let this not be a harbinger of things to come under new ownership.

Don't overthink this one. CARS is a good way to see a movie with the kids and still be entertained. It was nice to hear people laugh at something less crass than jokes about bodily functions.

A compelling story combined with the most georgeous CG renders in any Pixar movie to date (or any movie to date?) make Cars the perfect movie for the whole family. There is an ideal blend of humor, drama and passion throughout the movie. Certainly a lot of heart, as the arogant Lightning McQueen learns and evolves as a character. His transformation is well received It's not as young-feeling as Toy Story, mind you. There are some themes here that are paced slower and clearly geared (no pun intended) towards an older audience. No matter, the kids love it, too and typically warm up to the tow truck Mater and Italian sportscar fanatic Luigi. Don't miss the special scenes at the end of the movie during the credits. They're absolutely hillarious! Expand

To all those who say that the movie's central premise is formulaic and tired: I say it is something that is badly needed to be said, over and over, especially in our frentic society of fast food and celebrity/sports worship. It's quite ironic given that the only things that are "tired" and "formulaic" in Hollywood today are just about every other movie released recently that has been shamelessly sequeled or repackaged, soley to make a buck. They're all in Walt Disney and Pixar's latest film 'Cars'. The story revolves around a rookie race car learning that life isn't about where you're going, but how you get there. Now I'll admit, last fall when I first heard about this movie I completely wrote it off as being utterly preposterous. Why? Simply because the idea of talking cars didn't seem entertaining in the least. It actually wasn't until the day before it's release I said, wow, I think Disney's got something here. (Which only proved to be true after seeing it the next day.) John Lassester, the man who took us into the world of toys in 'Toy Story' and on a search for a young clown fish in 'Finding Nemo' has done it once again. First off, there's Lightning McQueen's (Owen Wilson) funny and irresistibly lovable new best friend, Mater. (Larry the Cable Guy) He adds to 'Cars' what Scrat the squirrel does in the 'Ice Age' films. Now don't get me wrong, many of the other characters featured in the film are plenty likeable, but Mater is the glue that brings it all together. Also in 'Cars' the animation is superb. It doesn't have the same style or look the other Pixar films have. I don't really know how to describe it, but its certainly something. But, as almost all movies, 'Cars' does have a drawback. Its missing something. That special something only Disney and Pixar can add that made 'Toy Story' what it is, a great movie. I'm not sure why, but its just not there. I imagine in the end 'Cars' will just fall short of having the longevity and memorability films like 'Finding Nemo', 'Monsters, Inc.' & 'Toy Story' will. Despite this, 'Cars' is still a winner and manages to be excellent. Not a classic, but excellent. I highly recommend seeing it at least once to give it a test drive. Expand

Slick, shiny and snazzy though it might be, the newest product to slide off the Pixar assembly line just doesn't have as much under the hood as previous models--and certainly not as much as the manufacturer thinks it does. Slick, shiny and snazzy though it might be, the newest product to slide off the Pixar assembly line just doesn't have as much under the hood as previous models--and certainly not as much as the manufacturer thinks it does. [***SPOILERS***] In fact, my use of the terms "product", "assembly line" and "manufacturer" to describe a Pixar movie serves as a diagnosis of what the problem is: what was once the pinnacle of true originality and perfection every time out has started ever so slightly to become formulaic. Technically, visually and vocally the all-car Cars is absolutely beyond question (and is STILL one of the two or three truly worthwhile mainstream summer movies currently out there), but the script, dealing with the Life Lessons learned by arrogant would-be champion race car Lightning McQueen as he's forced to stay in a small, one-horsepower town en route to The Big Race (and with seven writers credited!) is beginning to show signs of wear, beginning with the Big Theme, which compared to previous Pixar epics is pretty second-hand and shopworn. The studio's last effort, The Incredibles, dealt so perceptively with the challenge of exceptionally gifted individuals being forced to water down their special talents in order to blend in with the masses that it was frequently used as an example on op-ed pages, while Finding Nemo spoke powerfully to every parent in the audience about the difficulty of balancing allowing children a necessary amount of independence and self-reliance with the parents' natural fears of the possible worst-case results of doing so. In contrast, Theme #1 of Cars (success and fame don't mean much if you don't come by them ethically and/or have someone you love to share them with)--while definitely a worthy message for audiences of all ages--has been just as well or better communicated in literally thousands of previous movies ranging from A Star Is Born to The Bad News Bears to The Apartment. And Theme #2 (we all need families or a network of friends we can call a family) is identical to that of Cars' current competition, the animals-versus-suburbia comedy Over the Hedge. The script is admittedly clever and very fast-moving, perhaps too much so: I get the very distinct impression that the gagmen and co-director John Lasseter couldn't bring themselves to edit out a single joke. And that may very well point up what my major problem with Cars is: too much of it, from the standard-issue wistful Randy Newman ballad that pops up mid-picture to all the end-credits in-jokes about a certain vocal regular, comes off as a bit self-referential, self-satisfied, maybe even a trifle smug...not that far removed from Lightning McQueen himself. Again, Cars looks and sounds spectacular (and if they release an IMAX version of it, I'll be in line); my reservations about it are relatively minor compared to how much I really did enjoy it, and second-tier Pixar is still very much worth your time. It's just that when your favorite five-star restaurant serves you a four-star meal, your inevitable response will be disappointment, however mild. As always, the voice casting is spectacularly on the mark, with Owen Wilson believably cocky and self-centered but not so obnoxious as to ever seem unredeemable as Lightning, Paul Newman wonderfully craggy as Doc Hudson, a long-time Radiator Springs pillar with a few secrets of his own, and Bonnie Hunt lending her signature down-to-earth warmth as McQueen's potential spiritual teacher and love interest. And I never thought it would be possible to find myself uttering about any movie or in any context that Larry The Cable Guy is the most charming and totally lovable thing about it. But then, never count out the seemingly impossible: up until this weekend I also never thought I'd hear myself conceding first-time victory to DreamWorks over Pixar in the yearly Battle of the CGI Titans--but the funnier and less self-absorbed Over the Hedge wins...by a whisker. The Pixar team imagined a sequel to the J.G. Ballard novel "Crash"(the Cronenberg adaptation about car wrecks and sex), in which the porn addicts find a way to impregnate an automobile. There's no hint of religion in "Cars", but there's a clue to be had in the pop culture reference(unusual for Pixar) that Filmore(George Carlin) offers. If this person(he makes metal) is God, "Cars" might be more subversive than you think because this puts the film in Aleister Crowley territory. As for the film text that is obvious, "Cars" is state-of-the-art in terms of getting the viewer involved with the story while displaying its computer wizardry. Radiator Springs is indeed, magical. A huge dissappointment following a string of gems from Pixar, but to be expected given the tremendously flawed concept. The film asks us to identify with the personalities of mechanical monstrosities; mistakes of nature with heart, but no real way of reaching out to eachother. How do cars have sex? That may seem like a ridiculous question, but the filmmakers spend so much time establishing the details of this world (and even a romance), that it's a question that begs to be asked. And I'm left cold by the lack of response. Unless the film is some sort of metaphor for how Americans have become increasingly socially isolated, I have to see it as a massive failure. Not to mention that it's socially irresponsible to release a movie glamorizing American car culture with this country and planet rapidly deteriorating due to our reliance on oil. And that's not a leftist rant, that's plain fact. Expand

On route across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California to compete against two seasoned pros, McQueen gets to know the town's offbeat characters--including Sally, a snazzy 2002 Porsche, Doc Hudson, a 1951 Hudson Hornet with a mysterious past, and Mater, a rusty but trusty tow truck, who help him realize that friendship is more important than trophies, fame and sponsorship. Now for my opinion. The only problem that I had with this movie was the minute length. It took a little bit of long time for a kids movie and I just don't know why. Personally I do think it is my least favourite Pixar movie, but there was still a lot I enjoyed. So what were its problems? Well, firstly I felt the narrative was a little too slack and sedate particularly in the middle act. Secondly, while there were some nice jokes, some didn't quite work and the script had its weak spots, could've done with more sophistication. Thirdly, the film's message is a little muddled.

But there is a lot to enjoy. The animation is superb, the backgrounds are beautiful and the character movements are crisp. The film has some really bright and inventive colouring which was a delight to see. The soundtrack is quite exhilarating as well, and the race scenes themselves are like mini-masterpieces of editing.

The characters are at least likable and engaging, Lightening McQueen(a refreshing retread from the dull and flaccid hero), female Porsche Sally(who is really cute) and Doc Hudson(the wise old-timer with a secret past) are the best characters in my opinion.

The voice acting is very well done. Owen Wilson gives a spirited and appealing vocal performance as Lightening, this was really refreshing to see and it really helped that Lightening himself was likable, yes he is cocky and arrogant then again even the best characters ever in film have a flaw or so of some kind. The late talented Paul Newman is a sheer delight as Doc, and Bonnie Hunt is delightful as Sally. Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Keaton, Tony Shalhoub and John Ratzenberger also give solid turns in their roles.

Overall, Cars is my least favourite of the Pixar movies but for the animation and voice acting especially, not to mention the race sequences it is well worth watching. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Cars is a decent film from Pixar. It has nice visuals and a mostly good cast of characters (I'm largely indifferent to Mater). It's not a gem, but Cars is an enjoyable watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this movie so much. It has a nice, simple but effective story, with interesting characters, beautiful animation, good music and race cars. Broom Broom!

Okay, so the movie starts with this new rookie car called Lightning McQueen, who looks like a red hybrid between a ford GT and a lotus car, racing against stock cars, some sort of Buick and a Plymouth super-bird in a NASCAR race. ( yeah this is a little silly )Lightning does all kinds of crazy things in the race, jumping over other cars and being all bouncy and flashy, which the fans all love. Though he is a little full of himself and is a brat to his pit crew. The big race ends in a 3-way tie with Lightning, the Buick (chick Hicks) and Super-bird (veteran racer, the King). A decider race is to be held in a weeks time and so Lightning, after reluctantly speaking for his sponsors, leaves to get to the race early. It's rather clear at this point that Lightning is a bit socially inept, bratty and is only interested in winning but he's still likable. After traveling along the road for a bit, Lightning ends up dumped in the middle of the interstate, panics, drives around like a maniac and ends up wrecking the main road of a small, pretty much abandoned town, called Radiator Springs. The towns residents make him fix the road and during all this Lightning acts like a brat and is rather mouthy, particularly towards the town doctor, who doesn't like him at all. But he gets better and makes friends with the residents and falls in love too. Doc still doesn't like him though, as Lightning found out about his secret racing past, and so Doc calls the press to take McQueen away, which upsets everyone else.

After being found and getting to his race, Lightning is not really with it, doing kinda poorly until he finds that most of the towns residents have come to be his pit crew (with Doc as the crew chief) and help him win. Lightning does awesome but just as he's about to win, Chick Hicks smacks around the King and causes him to crash. Lightning goes back to push him across the finish line, giving up his win to do something nice and showing a growth in character. This of course goes down well with everyone and even though he did not win, Lightning is considered the race champion. He then decides to go live in Radiator Springs with his new found family.

Its all very well put together and feels so heartwarming in many of the scenes. Paul Newman, who voiced Doc Hudson, did a terrific job of bring this character to life. I also liked Sally the Porsche, the towns sheriff and many others. The film has humour here for kids as well as adults and will amuse most people I think. Its a nice kid-friendly family film that I think is one of Pixars best works and deserves a good rating.

The storytelling, while rather simple, is deep enough for a kids' movie, and has a good moral. The pacing of the movie is so good, instead of rushing the progression of the characters, they made so every character was well established before they get rolling. And I mentioned it earlier, but Pixar really out did themselves with this one. The animation is absolutely stellar, definitely better then anything else they had done before and in my opinion, the only movie to surpass it's animation was toy story 3, and maybe Cars 3. Cars 2 looks much, much worse however, some parts of it looking like a 3D animated tv show. Even if you're not a kid I would definitely say this is worth a watch, even if you don't end up liking it, you will get to see some of the best 3d animation out there. Expand

Sure, it's a letdown compared to the Pixar movies prior to this one, but it doesn't do anything offensively bad but I know that it also doesn't do anything outstanding. The story is the typical movie about an unlikeable protagonist who goes through a journey outside his luxuries to learn humility. It doesn't try anything new storytelling wise. It has clichés and tons of filler scenes (That's probably why the movie feels slow) and it doesn't communicate to the audience a powerful or deep message or anything, it just lacks that "Pixar magic". Probably my biggest problem with the movie is the world building. Why are they cars? This is probably the dumbest concept and the dumbest world Pixar has ever had. It just makes the wolrd building so confusing, like, how are they able to hang pictures or posters in walls if they don't have hands or thumbs? How are they living? How the hell do they AGE ?(because Doc Hudson is supposed to be an old guy) How do they have children? Why is everything feeling like the human world but it isn't supposed to be a human world but instead, a world of cars? HOW??? WHY??? WHAT??? This story could literally work with humans driving cars, at least if it was that way I wouldn't be complaining about how stupid this idea was.

The movie does have some positives, of course. Like I said, it's not as BAD as people say it is. Sometimes the score is pretty good, I like the "Our Town" song, specially the scene it is being played, like, that is probably my favorite scene of the movie because that is the only semblance of "Pixar magic" this movie has...And I think that's it. The rest of the aspects were pretty...Meh.

Overall, this movie was pretty meh. It's still much better than most of Illumination's catalog and this is probably the "best" out of the Cars trilogy. If you don't want to watch it, just watch the "Our Town" scene or just listen to the song, you're welcome.

Consigliato? Sta a voi.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Originally gave this a 6/10, but upped it to a 7. Mainly because I found McQueen's journey to be quite endearing, starting as a self-centered hotshot who's only focus in life is to gawk at golden piston cups, changing to a racing car that actually understands there's more to life than just crossing a finish line.

As well as that, Radiator Springs is amazing. I heard somewhere from some interview that at Pixar they always try to make their stories' settings feel like they've been "lived in". This rings true with Radiator Springs. The town has an indescribable humble quality to it - the breathtaking scenery also contributes to the spellbinding nature of the town. Also loved the music choice of "Sh-Boom by The Chords" during the neon-lighting scene!

I had gone with my school to watch this. I was already very excited since I got some stickers with something (I don't exactly remember) so I wanted to know more about this film. It was really visually appealing to see. Although I didn't know English back then so I was only interested in the races and seeing Lightning McQueen and Mater do weird things (and also Lightning McQueen building the road was also pretty interesting to me somehow; it still is). Ever since then I had seen this film every single time it came on Disney (there was a time when the Pixar movies were being shown a lot on Sundays).

I like every single thing about the movie - the visual appeal, the story, the characters, the songs, the character development. And it's based on one of my favourite subjects - race cars. Although this is not my bias saying how awesome this movie is. Everything falls in its place perfectly. The story is pretty straightforward, and it is entire driven by Lightning McQueen's character development and the time he spends with the other cars. I'd have wished the other movies of this franchise had also been similar, but at the same time I also think this movie didn't need any sequels.

Cars is an enjoyable film for sure but has been destroyed by its sequels. This movie probably would be looked back on in a more positive light had it been the only one in its series. All the characters are fun and work well enough but aren't anything super special. The beginning of this movie takes a while to get you fully invested in what's happening. It wasn't until about halfway through that I really felt any emotion at all. The jokes are ok but most of them are meant for kids. The entire premise of "Cars" and the "Cars" world is also a little strange. The previous PIXAR movies had insanely good world-building which this movie lacks. I will say though that this movie's animation is much better than the films that came previously. PIXAR has always improved their animation with each film, and in the case of Cars, it really shows. They have perfected specifically metal and landscapes in this movie. Going from Incredibles (the PIXAR film previous) to Cars is surprisingly a big jump in terms of animation, so I have to applaud them for that. Overall, Cars is a perfectly fine movie that I honestly think would be looked at better if its sequels did not exist. Expand
