I haven’t read the Stephen King novel nor watched Brian De Palma’s (aka the original) version of the movie so I don’t know what I was expecting from this movie.

This movie for some reason did not feel spectacular or brilliant and I am pretty sure most people feel the same.

The movie lacked suspense or any scary moments and I think for a horror movie like Carrie, you should feel the anticipation of suspense.

For some reason I find the special effects to be fake and unrealistic. It felt like it was “gore CGI fest” and it’s not even that gory.

And as for the plot goes, it felt predictable and teenager-y at times which I have no idea why this plot being teenager-y is a bad thing.

Now for the good parts.

I think Kimberly Pierce, the director of the movie, tried really best to make this movie good which she failed, but I see the effort of her trying anyway. Some of the shots of the movie were beautiful to watch so the cinematography of this movie is pretty good.

Chloe Grace Moretz did a good job portraying Carrie. She handled the emotions of the character well, from the vulnerable Carrie to the vengeful Carrie. Chloe Grace Moretz also some great chemistry with the cast here. She had a good chemistry with Ansel Elgort as Tommy Ross but most of all, she had a good chemistry with Julianne Moore as a crazy mother-daughter relationship.

Julianne Moore also did a good job in portraying Margaret White. It may not be her best but she put a lot of effort in acting as her character well.

While the direction and the performances and the chemistry of this movie were great enough, they’re easily overlooked with the movie’s lack of suspense and its lackluster feeling.

Carrie is brilliantly acted and emphasises on a relatable problem which makes for above average drama but as a horror movie, it is simply not scary enough.

The Good: Not a bad remake, mostly following the source material and is a clear ode to the original. Chloe Grace-Moretz was fantastic and you can tell she is a fan of the original and worked hard to make sure she did the character justice. A few scenes were genuinely creepy.

The Bad: Unfortunately, it just feels like an unnecessary film. While the updated effects were nice at times, the original film stands up well and doesn't feel dated ... even today. While they wanted to stay true to the original, that almost feels like their downfall.

Unfortunately she is the psychologically neglected daughter of a bible-beating nut-job. Bullied at school by some very cruel classmates, Carrie transforms into a force of supernatural vengeance on a path to self destruction. It is a timeless and poignant tale that is very familiar. This film isn't the first redo for the "Carrie" story but in my opinion it is by far the best.

Although the film is predictable to anyone who has spent countless seasons watching the classic film, or re-reading the story by Mr. King, Chloë Grace Moretz portrays the telekinetic school girl with more charm and depth. Sissy Spacek offers a more vulnerable, sorrowful Carrie and I enjoy her version immensely. I just feel that Moretz interpretation is more attuned to that outcast, sheltered, mentally scared character. I felt invested enough to stay connected through the parts of the film that almost seemed redundant and too close to the 1976 film.

The film moves in that same somber slow atmospheric realm of depressed soul as the original and the characters are critically close to being two dimensional but the depth and breadth of Kimberly Pierce's vision of "Carrie" offers so much more substance to the story on screen that it carries the characters from scene to scene. However disappointing the lack of personality the characters seem to have in the first half of the film second and last act the energy and chilling vitality begins to shine through elevating "Carrie" into a more visceral, macabre film. The characters become more affective and viable, especially in the last act when things really start moving.

Visually it all boils down to the effects and dark realization of Carrie's breakdown into an uncontrollable storm of death and destruction. Pierce offers more detail to the personal "growth" of Carrie and more celebration of the carnage the ensues. I enjoyed this film and believe that it deserves far more love from horror fans than it has been given

It was advertized as such, but it definitely is more DePalma than King. Which is unfortunate, as Kimberly Pierce doesn't quite capture the use of cinematography and music cues that made the DePalma classic so effective.

Though this movie is not scary at all, it still delivers an okay story with okay execution, and is more accessible to modern teenagers than the original film.

But even with that, the movie fails to improve the story whilst updating it. In the end, the whole thing feels woefully unnecessary, but nothing too terrible.

It makes you wonder what the entire point of remaking this movie was for. But in the end, Kimberly Pierce created a movie that some people are likely to enjoy. This definitely doesn't beat the original by a long shot, but I would recommend seeing this one when you have the chance.

But I don't think anyone ever thought it would be. Queer director Kimberly Pierce's (Boy's Don't Cry) interpretation and adaptation of the material is not completely unnecessary. The setup is the same as Carrie is bullied by some girls at school and than begins to discover she has telekinetic powers. She of course makes it to the prom where a prank is pulled and everyone suffers a horrible fate because of it. In this version Jullianne Moore has the strongest impact as her overly religious mother and we get an idea of why. It seems she may be a lesbian and punishes herself everytime she is attracted to a woman. It also is implied that she was raped and Carrie was a result of that. It definitely adds a dimension to that story that wasn't there before. Pierce also interprets the main character differently. This Carrie has more control over her powers and the film is almost a setup for a superhero/villain origin story. Regardless although somewhat impressive it lacks the power and precision of the original film. Chloe Moretz Grace is also decent as Carrie but lacks the genuine touch and power of Sissy Spacek's performance. As for the others only Judy Greer as the gym teacher and the adorable and charming Anson Mount as her date make an impression. All in all it's a pretty good movie that leads up to a somewhat ridiculous but sort of bad ass finale. I wish Pierce would have kept it more subtle. In that I think the ultimate message of the movie about bullying, religious extremism, self worth and discovery would have been delivered more clearly.

Budget: $30M
Box Office: $85M

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good adaptation of a legendary novel

I must admit, hearing there was going to be another adaptation of Stephen King's first book I read so long ago and possibly a remake of the 1976 movie that I thought was a good adaptation, I was a bit cynical. But after hearing Chloë Grace Moretz would portray Carry White and Julianne Moore her mother, I was getting more intrigued and curious about this.

It's a story about bullying and what it can do the the victim. That topic is of all times. You soon realize the horror of the story is not Carrie (who has a telekinetic power that quickly develops) but the people around her, like her bible crazed mother and her evil classmate who is willing to do anything to make Carrie pay for being different.

Julianne Moore plays an extremely traumatized woman. Every thought that she has that seems sinful must be punished by hurting herself. Julianne Moore is very scary in this role because you never know what she will do next. And you are waiting for her to snap. The rules of life she learned (herself) from the bible and her love for her daughter makes her confused. She portraits this really well, you feel sorry for her and understand her motives to do what she does. Chloë Moretz plays a perfect sweet naive Carrie that doesn't know what is happening to her, but during the story blooms into a more secure young woman. In the beginning of the movie she still tries to hide her head between her shoulders, but as she learns more about life outside her mother's views, she dares to show herself more and shake off the trauma of her mother. I think she is a perfect Carrie, because she keeps her innocence, even when she goes all judgment day on the prom guests. She is still the victim of the people around her.

I think they did a good job with this story. I cannot say it's better than the original was in its time, but for this generation of filmmakers and moviegoers, I think this will make quite a big impression on the audience. So for me it's a great adaptation of a legendary novel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976) was finally remade in 2013 into this, directed by Kimberly Peirce, a modern version of Carrie White played by Chloe Grace Moretz. This remake made me felt it being too nice, too friendly and quite unlike the original 1976 one. The performances aren’t that good. Julianne Moore playing Margaret White, Carrie’s mother, didn’t seem too cruel or bad to her daughter. Unlike Piper Laurie, Moore’s performance wasn’t great as audiences expected. In 1976, Laurie’s Margaret did really well with a dark character and knew lots about Christianity but here, Moore’s Margaret loved Carrie more than hated her. It’s just WRONG! She just didn’t slap Carrie hard enough! Another problem was Moretz’s role for Carrie White. Her look in here was too popular to be unpopular. And I would prefer her walking home than calling her mother to come. One more big problem was the prom scene. Carrie didn’t need to move her hands to control her telekinesis but this version had made Carrie White too weak. C’mon, looking can kill someone, Carrie is too strong to move her hands. She just needed to look around and it would happen. She also lacked the awkwardness and weirdness of Sissy Spacek. Moretz looked no creepy at all when her body was bloody. Spacek had frightened most of the audiences by her looks but Moretz looked more like a clown than something creepy. Portia Doubleday’s Chris Hargensen was also a big problem. Her character was weak. She wasn’t as dark and annoying as Nancy Allen’s. Doubleday wasn’t good enough to have this role. I also don’t like the scene when Carrie was in the principle’s office. The principal should have mispronounced Carrie to Cassie more than once. This is a bit like **** I don’t say much about CGI but I felt okay except for the blood dump. Is that real blood or just CGI? If it’s CGI, then it’s too cheesy and raw. When the blood fell, it looked more like paint. Even when the Jesus Christ statue bleeding looked like bloody color from paint. I felt like it’s unecessary to do a remake of such a good movie. The movie was 2% scary while the one in 1976 was 79% scary to me. This was more like an R-Rated Action and Drama more than an R-Rated Horror. I would prefer this to be a PG-13. Nothing looked like an R. The revenge was okay! I liked that, seeing Chris and Billy dying was one of my favorite part and the remake just made it weaker and had made a waste of time stepping on the ground and then kill them one by one and made the light pole fell and burn both of them. It’s better to just look and make the car explodes. This remake was not necessary alone. Carrie (1976) is one of the movie that is best left alone. This 2013 adaptation was only made to make money, nothing else, not for being entertained, no! It’s not scary, not really horror but like a cheesy and disappointing horror remakes.
