I find it hard to choose a bunch of words to explain how deep and heartbreaking this movie is... I feel this movie, deeply; but it's just hard to explain it all.

The buzz attracted me to it; sat down without much knowledge and by the end I had tears in my eyes and the feeling I had experienced something so unforgettable. This is a masterpiece, this is a work of art. The strong acting (Timothée Chalamet is a vision of melancholy and curiosity), the beautifully written script, the shots, the gorgeous direction by Luca Guadagnino, the music (the songs by Sufjan Stevens are haunting, dreamlike); the nostalgia of it all. I have lived moments in my life that passed, that are forever gone; but left their marks in me. And this is what this moving story is about. This is so much more than a "love story" between Elio and Oliver, a young boy and an older man who discover each other during a summer in Italy, in the 80s. It is about moments; memories, what we carry with us through the years, what is left in the past and how important events will change us forever.

"Call me by your name" needs to be seen, known, shared, celebrated.

The scene is an electric wow and I doubt we will see its like for quite some time. Bravo. Expand

Fantastic cinematography, it feels you are in the spot from minute one. The film grabs you little by little. And there´s this feeling you know how it is going to end, which makes it very very effective and affecting once it comes. By the whole second hour of the picture you are totally in. In love with the characters, with the vibe, with those parents... Perfectly executed, it is one of those rare cases one can consider a film flawless, whether the story is your cup of tea or not (it should be for everybody, love, youth, etc), it is flawlesly conveyed. It grabs your heart in ways... let´s say you thought it wasn´t going to hit you like that at first but in the end it does, and for days. A similar experience to that of Moonlight, although the latter was a more innovative piece and full of heavy stuff. In this one, the problem and "villanin" is "just" time. Which is not little. Amazing life lessons we can get from here. Special mention to Armie Hammer in the first role in which he truly excels and of course to Timothee, this young actor that suffers that thing, that beautiful and hurtful thing called love, and that will probably stay with you for days. Especilly after his amazing last 15 minutes where he shows all the hurt and love a young person can live in this situation. Perfect piece, something to behold. Best film of 2017. Expand

The performances are so nuanced, truthful, and raw that I am left shook to my core. THIS is the best movie of 2017. Luca Guadagnino directed this with a masterful touch and the poignant script by the sublime James Ivory takes us back to a time that we can't and don't want to forget. The performances are unlike anything you will see from a film released in this time of angst and quirkiness. Firstly, the end with Michael Struhlbarg is breaktaking and one of the most important moments in cinema. Armie Hammer subtle performance is brave in its command and vulnerability. He has moments of quiet that break your heart and you know EXACTLY what he's thinking. It's the quiet work that gets overlooked, but is pivotal to the emotional core of the film. Timothée Chalamet is a rare gem. He carries this movie in every way possible and is so powerful and charming that I can't believe he's 22 (now). This movie is WHY people love film and I can not say enough about it. I could talk for hours and THAT is what you want from Art. Thank you to everyone for this gift. Expand

Not always faithful to the book, but that's usually a good thing: the ending improves on the source material, for example, while the lengthy (and slightly dull) middle-section is significantly reduced. Timothée Chalamet gives the clear performance of the year, while Michael Stuhlbarg's monologue towards the end deserves to go down in history as one of the great film moments. The fact we see straight sex more explicitly than gay sex is a little wearying, but this film is otherwise utterly flawless. Expand

The star-making performance made by Timothée Chalamet is an Oscar worth and Armie Hammer made his best role in his career so far. Their chemestry made the film even more empathic and moving if it weren't enought the brillant screenplay written and perfectly adapted by Aciman sensible book, the legendary James Ivory, whose movie are already timeless as well as this one will be.
It's a universal story about first love, empathy, family and coming of age that will blow away it's audiences when it meets it's audiences, which I think EVERYONE, no matter the agem gender, religious beliefs or sexual orientation. A cinematic classic that brings beatutiful shots in the northern Italy and outstanding cinematography. A story of a lifetime.

Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Yuor Name is an exquisite adaptation of the novel of the same name by Andre Aciman (who also has a small cameo in the film). Whilst some might just bypass this as another 'Moonlight' or LGBT bait-and-switch for the Oscars, no, this is a legit film that is well crafted with beautifully acted characters that serves more of a coming-of-age film rather than a gay romance. I didn't like Moonlight that much because that film felt contrived and bare, whereas CMBYN is exactly the type of film that you get lost in. The film has the feeling of a Richard Linklater film and the aethestics of a Sofia Cappola film. CMBYN will move you, make you cry, make you care for the protagonist and most importantly, make you appreciate your life's experiences and what you have whether that is pain or for longing. The word 'beautiful' cannot be stressed enough because the music, lighting, languid pacing of the film are what contributes it to being a unique cinematic experience. It is a fairytale set in Italy for our young protagonists, but also a dream that each of them knows will end in a short time. It is cinema at its finest and that is all that we can hope for in this day and age. Expand

Amazing piece of film-making

Call Me By Your Name is one of those films that keeps you mesmerised while you watch it and doesn't leave you for the next few days. Everything about this film is great: the excellent cinematography; the setting of the film in rural Italy; the performances from the lead characters; the soundtrack. The movie very brilliantly captures the budding romance between two young adults who engage in a love slightly forbidden, but so passionate and real. The acting in this film deserves great applause, it's one of those few films that really reaches out to you emotionally and you can really feel the joy and pain of the characters. The aesthetics and visuals of the film are also top-notch and gives a really strong sense of the location and atmosphere of the world the story is set in. It's a must watch for any moviegoer.

They do not rush to present you the beautiful connection between Elio and Oliver, there's definitely a very interesting development. The Italy of 1980 certainly gives a romantic atmosphere to the movie. There are certain things that I didn’t like, the cinematography for example. I feel it is very simple, it could have been better. Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet--who was recently introduced to audiences in 'Ladybird' and is destined for an even bigger spotlight--bask in the Northern Italian countryside, soaking in each other's company as the camera drifts like a zephyr through the idyllic scenery.

The acting and cinematography particularly stand out, so much so that one must pity those (or themselves) who have to trudge back to their cars through crusty snow and single digit temperatures after watching these two lovebirds lounging in the sun for an entire summer.

Given the subject matter and release date, I suspect that various film executives hoped this film would replicate last year's success of 'Moonlight'--which, let's not forget, won the Oscar for Best Picture--yet 'Call Me by Your Name' is simply far less compelling. And while it served as a pleasant respite from the harsh winter, it felt more like a June release both in feel and overall impact.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Bravo,Luca Guadagnino!

Intelligently written, a surprisingly forthright same sex love story. It avoids the standard gay romance cliches, and instead gives us a thoughtful, realistic (if somewhat idealized) movie about well developed and interesting characters. Timothée Chalamet is astonishing in a breakout performance. But, I really loved the flawless supporting cast, especially Michael Stuhlbarg and Amira Casar as Elio’s loving parents. Wonderfully linear filmmaking, refreshingly unadorned, and never maudlin. One of the year’s best. Expand

Call Me By Your Name

Closing the half-open fridge door after someone left it or snatching water bottle out of someone's hands or a locket are some of the finest detailed props used to convey a message which of course ups the ante of the film within it first few minutes. Call Me By Your Name is soothing, light and hopeful film about a relationship within a brief period of time and it is shot within it stretching it over for more than 2 hours, seems a bit much even from an adopted novel. Timothy is brilliant in it and his breakdowns (surprisingly there are few of them) are amazing and his love track is portrayed with such an innocence that it might remind you of Jake and Heath from the Brokeback Mountain. Call Me By Your Name is a movie that feeds more of the character to the audience and sometimes stretches the sequences leading into exhaustion and if it was edited a bit more; it might have been perfect.

In this film, you see amazing chemistry between the three main characters; Elio, Oliver, and Mr. Perlman. A story of how a homosexual relationship can form naturally between two straight men in the span of a six week period in Italy is truly inspiring. It is unique in that there no struggle for acceptance, like in most coming-of-age films concerning gay teens. This film instead focuses in on the relationship itself and the growth of two seemingly already mature characters with the guidance of Elio's father. The film is accompanied by the beautiful images of Northern Italy and the emotional melodies and lyrics written by Sufjan Stevens and others. Not to mention that a new top-tier actor, Timothee Chamalet, is born. At only 22 years old this actor tears down the house with his powerful performance and chilling ending filled with a rollercoaster of emotions. Expand

A flawless picture, on the other hand, it's a bit tricky. All you do is praise its qualities saying something along the lines of "a deep, emotional masterpiece" but that does not sound very argumentative. But it is how it is, so please indulge me while I try to pick myself up from the misery of this movie's greatness.

Luca Guadagnino and his peers, especially screenwriter James Ivory took a progressive tone, slowly unraveling the love between the 17-year-old smart bookworm Elio and 24-year-old carefree and charming research assistant Oliver. Yet despite this progression being noticeable pretty quickly, it never fails to touch you (no pun intended) on an emotional level, with every line being delivered with calm confidence.

Indeed, calmness is what drives this movie, and Guadagnino's favourite weapons to unleash it are the music and most of all, the location. The fact that this takes place in Northern Italy during summer allows for the landscape to become part of the story. Indeed, every kiss, caress or simple discussion is augmented by occasionally filming characters from afar, letting the nature take the spotlight. And it is worthy of the spotlight, as "nature has cunning ways of finding our weakest spots".

But even smaller elements of nature are presented often through symbolism, like the scene in which Elio puts his finger through an apple plucking out the seed and letting the juice drip over him. Its a sexual scene, but is also more complex than it look at first glance, as the seed represents potency, sexuality and the warm apple juice represents the warmth of a closed one and a union with nature.

But, this is till a coming-of-age story and Elio's frustration with sexuality unfolds through a beautiful yet heartbreaking search of identity. This, indeed, is not a film which glorifies and attempts to make us accept homosexuality, but a heartwarming, subtle, touching (see, I told you I would fall into the misery) and deep story about love found and... love lost. Arguably the best of the year.

Great cinematography, superb acting by Chamalet, and great photography. What I can’t grasp is how they got nominated for the screenplay. The story is NOT a coming of age of a young teen. This is a very slick pedophile grooming a an hormone raging easy pray. Where is this big LOVE story that everybody see? IF you are a very young person (15/25) maybe it might even appeal to you. The first time I saw it, I was very ditracted by Chamalet’s acting and all those trite and clique ideas of Tuscany’ paradise of “fresh apricot juice bucolic ochards and nature that feels like you can touch. BUT, take the smoke away, and you have a very calculated but VERY dangerous message hidden: a kid is having sex with an adult with the blessing of his family. What horrified me is how the gay community is defending this. Also, how come we are pointing figers at religion when in the movie is all over the place? This is a very wrong message to send out, it doesn’t help gay people it CRUCIFIED THEM. Expand

a visual feast stacked with cinematography for the ages. Yes it can sometimes play as a ode to Italy with how often it lingers on landscape an architectural shots but it never does so without contributing well to the stories tone.

an ephemeral love story way too many lgbtqia+ youths can relate to ,falling for an older man, deifying that romance only to be abandoned once the significant other leaves for more ''realistic ''prospects post statutory exploitation. those who critique this film for glorifying pedophilia are unaware of movies being a vehicle for real story's and that not every story has o be attached to an agenda in fact i argue if any agenda is attached it's cautionary and very aware of the lovers age difference. firstly timothy's portrayal is purposefully youthful, he is a boyish man naturally and in the presence of Armie Hammer seems demur .i see his story as a honest telling of a love story one that is one sided .i do not think elio's love is shared by Oliver who's mostly flattered and lustful. Its a dark romance and once it's viewed as one he movie is even more impressive as i begin o see the bright Italian setting reminiscent of old co-existing with the new.

it was an enjoyable movie that is quiet dense to to receive a rewatch.

The story takes place in Italy in the 80's, and this movie lives up and respects that time period with style and respect. Old Alfa Romero's and Fiats fill the streets, bars packed with town people drinking and playing cards on the corner chain-smoking packs of cigarettes. The director had a clear, vivid vision for this film and it shows masterfully on-screen. I haven't seen chemistry like this in so long. Timonthée and Armie were great together. Also, I want to also praise Michael Stuhlbarg, his monologue delivery at the end was so on point that watching the film in theater for the first time brought tears to my eyes. I watched the film, then read the book and I can say with honesty that it respects the source material. Great film! Expand

This belongs to that last lucky category. Adapting Aciman's words is not easy, I would say that it would be an unfilmable material, and not precisely in visual terms, it's actually the narrative and emotional weight that requires a reliable adaptation. "Eight White Nights" American writer has shown a particular delicacy describing the situations on paper, uses language and technique in a compact and naturally functional way, his narrations seem to breathe life in images, in real images. That's why James Ivory's screenplay deserves gold recognition, because, with the duty to be up to the vision of the author, the level of demand was considerably further, however, there was no risk whatsoever here. Based on a customary but effective mold, the plot has a traditional structure until the third act, because the resolution seems to get us back, emerging more problems, knowing such difficulties are mere vehicles used by the author to represent an irrefutable truth: real life isn't a fairy tale and will never be; at least, it was for half an hour. Separate mention must be made of certain scenes that border on the memorable. The pictures get a solid position in the story, thus, the conception and the approach of those moments play a vital role in different but powerful ways. From vitality-radiating lines to power-expelling dialogues, each moment builds one more pillar in the plot, no matter how insignificant may seem — there's a lot for the ordinary spectator surely, — they keep an intrinsic meaning correlated with the characters. The performances are, beforehand, a foretold delight. Timothée Chalamet is off the charts as Eliot, the sincerity and fidelity that this young actor— who participates in two of the films nominated in the Academy Awards this year —imbues into the extracted-from-the-book character are overwhelming, establishing himself as the promising young of the moment, since with that final scene he ratifies a commendable tour de force. There is no doubt that the film wouldn't be the same without his simplicity and natural charisma, what is more, it'd be nothing because Chalamet is the whole film, his interpretation steals all the attention, even the praises that were directed towards enormous — figurative and literally — Armie Hammer. It seems that the actor has taken on a big challenge with Oliver, one that means transmute himself internally with sensitivity and moral complexity. It's worth mentioning the fascinating work of the protagonist's parents, Amira Casar and Michael Stuhlbarg, especially the father's due to his tearful monologue, brimming with understanding and power, he expresses and encloses unusual skills.

Another fundamental cornerstone, truly fundamental is called Luca Guadagnino. We know that the Sicilian filmmaker is prone to tales of love, words like 'frivolous' or 'plastic' will never be used as adjectives to describe his stories. The filmmaker's sensibility and inscrutability make the film an irreplaceable, pessimistic and wonderful, deep and amusing, reflective and peculiar time; the best film of the director and genre in recent years, no doubt about it.

Visually, it's not an easy film, far less exhaustive, the true beauty is in the lack of artificiality, everything is emphatically vivacious, coherent with the beauty of the writing, proposing angles and constant soft focuses to set in the focal spot it needs, a skillfully functional strategy; likewise, it represents that intimate and relaxed aura of the book, altering minimally the contents from this one. Personally, "Call Me by Your Name" could be the "Brokeback Mountain" for a new generation and not for its realistic approach to the portrait of virility or the importance of any person's feelings, but by the vastness of messages (truths) that a simply deep story can say, a change, that's what it wants. "Call Me by Your Name" by Luca Guadagnino invigorates again homosexual-love stories in cinema by means of a staggering coming-of-age, led by a terrifying interpretation of Timothée Chalamet and a shrewd and very personal eye of a director who fortifies his filmography, while it's one of the most faithful and emotionally charged film adaptations of the last century, proving that even if you have a pre-established foundation, originality, passion and creativity in the artistic field are vital for a motion picture which reaches a whole new level of emotional power, here, an example. Getting rid of taboos, this film is one of the most human, magnetic and heartfelt movies about teenagers and love I have seen in my short life, one that leaves opportunities for more bold and talented writers, actors, directors or any kind of artists to raise their hands and say: Here I am and this is my story.

This was a difficult one to review. While I was watching it, at times I wondered "why did this movie get so much praise?"

Then, as I got to the end, I started to understand. Finally, over the next couple days I couldn't stop thinking about this movie. The acting, the emotions, the way it seemed to simultaneously and perfectly capture the essence of Italy and the essence of the 80's. I think the first hour could have been done differently and better, but overall it's one of the best movies I've seen recent years.

Where were the facial closeups that two men share with their audience that conveys their emotions and connection with each other. Eye contact is everything in a relationship. This is crucial to developing the characters and the entire movie itself. I only saw a couple closeups of their face and that is what left me wanting in this movie. It was almost impersonal. Surprised to see a director leave that out. While their ages were somewhat close enough, the pedophilia aspect did not enter the story for me. The older boy looked far older than 24 however. Expand

I was just disappointed I suppose. I definitely did not despise the film as it had many good points to balance out the bad but I thought I'd be tossing up between a 9 or 10, not a 6 or 7. I needed to let my feelings out about this movie so here I am making this mess of a review. When I came across the reviews, I was not surprised that the critics score surpassed the audience's score. This brings me to the problem of the film. The idealism of aesthetics over plot. Recently, films that could not give less of a **** about cinematography and shot composition but devoted more time to create a more invested plot received more praise from the audience than critics. This is because critics are taught to give great consideration to the movie's aesthetics whilst the average viewer wouldn't care as much. Film is a form of storytelling, and yes you need a good way of telling it by using aesthetics but the STORY part of the word should be more important. This film is definitely aesthetics over plot which is a concept I just do not agree with. The shot composition was interesting, the cinematography was beautiful, the landscapes were serene and the music was pretty but the film had unused potential for more developed plot, relationships, complications and characters.
Plot: So a seventeen year old goes to Italy for a holiday and stays with his family and an apprentice of his father. The boy who actually has a girlfriend at the time falls in love with him but he has to leave. It's decent but possibly too minimalistic. Sure, there are minor details and sub plots here and there but none of them equate to much. Relationships: The elephant in the room is now being addressed. The paedophilia. I tried to overlook it but it was a bit difficult when the actors have a ten year age gap and the protagonist is 17 and looks possibly younger. Their chemistry and awakening of love is emotional and believable but they still don't mature or change a huge lot as characters during their relationship.
Complications: Obviously being in the LGBT community can be a struggle and discovering your sexual identity at a young age can be difficult and confusing. But I feel if the two lovers were ostracised and mistreated about it, as what can happen in society, the movie would have more of a plot and more important messages and themes. But every one in the film seems to be fine with it. The father is beyond happy for his son and the girlfriend instantly forgives him for cheating on her. Characters: I think all the actors did great jobs in this film but the characters were often too pretentious and precocious. I understand that they were rich and intelligent but sometimes it got annoying. Overall a beautiful film but one that still had potential for more. To directors, producers and everyone else, please remember plot over aesthetics!

While I do understand the concern about the age gap and the double standard surrounding it, I have a firm belief that this movie is not about that. For those complaining that it is 'slow' or boring, you need to understand how that was a very intentional decision. Most of us viewers know what will eventually happen with Elio and Oliver, so the scenes before this are full of tension in such a beautiful way. We're left to be utterly amazed by what we are watching. Honestly, if this movie took place in a random American city I don't think I would love it so much. The stills put me in a trance, every colour choice honestly kept me in awe the entire film, and the soundtrack is the best I've heard in a long time. The trance was finally broken when Elio and Oliver finally got together, and the tension made it even better. It was real, and the incredible performances by both Armie and Timothee to the life-changing voice of Sufjan Stevens, what more do you want? It's been a year and I haven't stopped thinking about it. I loved the one lens decision by the filmmakers, as it kept me in the story and I didn't even feel like I was watching a movie. Life changing. I completely recommend to anyone who wants to fall in love with a story and who has enough money to immediately fly to Italy cuz you'll want to :) Expand

Timothee Chalamet gives one of the best performances I've ever seen and he works wonderfully beside Armie Hammer. I was never a big fan of Armie, but after seeing him in this I have much more respect for him. I'd never heard of Luca Guadagnino prior to watching this, but now I'd consider him one of the best filmmakers just because of this one masterwork. A lot of people won't understand why I love this so much, it's slow, it's long and there's not a lot of dialogue, but that's exactly why it's so damn good. It's slow because it's taking it's time developing the romance the fires up between the two characters, it's long because you need time to take it all in, and there's not a lot of dialogue because who needs words when you have incredible performances, and an extremely talented director. The cinematography in this film is some of the best I've ever seen, the location in which this film takes place is glorious and I'm honored to say I've been there. Call Me By Your Name is my favorite movie and Timothee Chalamet is now one of my favorite actors. This movie isn't for everybody, but it certainly is for me. Expand

The setting is lovely - it's only described as 'somewhere in Northern Italy' and there's some relatively thoughtful dialogue present, although there are some scenes when the characters don't talk too often. I also enjoyed the classical/instrumental music often played in the background, which gives it a somewhat dream-like/floaty feel or sense. I particularly liked the light piano tunes, which had a bit of an ethereal sense to them at times. The characters seem very thoughtful and it's quite an atmospheric film. I would recommend it, yes. "Call me by your name" It's a nice movie, I love the realistic of the situations. In my opinion, Elio is the best character in the story. The movie is breath takeningly gorgeous with it's scenes in northern Italy. The story line grabs your heart, and when it breaks it, all you can do is thank it, because you will never regret watching this movie. The story shows raw emotion, and the acting of both Timothée Chalamet and Archie Hammer is surreal, and both the music and scenes will be something you remember for the rest of your lives. Expand

This movie broke me into pieces. It left me depressed for days afterwards. I found myself going back to the ending and balling my eyes out. Soundtrack, cinematography, acting and writing are all perfection. A beautiful must-watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so let’s just ignore all the pedophilia for a moment (I’ll come back to it later) this movie is absolutely unremarkable. Cinematography is dry and boring. Pacing is boring. Editing is boring. Story is just a horny teenager who wants nothing but sex (at the beginning. Lately it becomes a story of a sexually traumatized teenager). Elio’s character is boring and bland. Only thing about him that the director focuses on is the suffering he’s experiencing after being groomed by a pedophile.

There’s no identity exploration in this film. No trying to understand anything about oneself. Even when Elio puts David's star he does so to mimic Oliver.

Yes, pedophilia. I don't care if it’s legal where the story takes place. The power imbalance between an inexperienced teen and a grown up man is a huge problem here. Oliver, in his own words, expressed interest in Elio long before Elio suspected anything. He straight up started molesting him in public. It is an important moment. It was Oliver who initiated it all. What follows is Elio’s developing obsession with Oliver. And this development is super boring and painfully slow. Oliver is not oblivious of Elio’s obsession and he can put an end to it but he chooses not to. They go on a short trip and while they are laying on the grass Oliver initiates a physical sexual contact with Elio. At this point Oliver already refers to Elio and himself like they are a couple. He once again can put an end to this mess but he just says some vague stuff. After that Oliver avoids Elio for a few days. Elio is suffering because of that. He thinks it’s his fault. It is a very typical reaction of a sexual abuse victim. To cut it short, they have a lot of sex. And after sex comes gaslighting. All of the sudden Oliver becomes so concerned about Elio’s mental wellbeing, telling him how he doesn't want Elio to become all messed up. Umm, excuse me, first you groom a teenager and have sex with him and then express your concern of how your actions might have messed him up? Give me a break.

Let’s talk about Elio’s parents. While he and Oliver were having their “relationship” they were acting ignorant like they don't know what is happening. But lately it is revealed they knew everything. I’m sorry what? What parent will allow some pedophile to groom their child? Why? Well his dad explains why. Because he thinks their “friendship” was something “good’ and “beautiful”. So his dad thinks his son and a pedophile are a nice couple. Also WTF is wrong with his parents in general. Why do they talk with him in the most vague way using big and grandiloquent words?

To sum it up, it’s a bad movie. Oliver is not just a pedo, he’s a dl gay and I don’t think it should be portrayed in a positive way either. I think the director just doesn't understand the sexual dynamics between underage and grown up people. Or maybe he thinks it’s normal. The movie is tasteless and stylistically bland. There’s one moment of flashbacks in weird solarized colors. They look absolutely out of place like everything else in this film. A teen who wants to be with a pedophile. Parents who cheer them on. The director who can’t comprehend sexuality or trauma.

Call Me By Your Name bored me too much at first that's why it doesn't have a 10 but it manages to be so magical and so special in its script and performances that the mystery of love manages to be discovered

One rare movie that manages to be better than the novel it's adapted from. Surely worthy of your time.
