Summary: Barbara “Babs” Hug (Marie Leuenberger) is a young radical lawyer fighting Switzerland’s antiquated prison system in the 1980s, and finds it to be an endless, draining battle. Caged Birds is a masterpiece from start to finish. The directing is strong, balancing a lot of tones at one time. The writing is strong, with two likable, engaging characters at the forefront. The visuals and music are excellent, elevating the characters and atmosphere masterfully. Read full review

Swiss director and co-writer Oliver Rihs (“Ready, Steady Ommm!”) takes a serious step into the big time with this gripping saga, a story that begins escape-artist jaunty and occasionally finds its way back there even as the story turns grimmer and the color palette progressively greyer.
