This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bright is an urban fantasy action film, directed by David Ayer(Fury, Suicide Squad) and starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. On one hand, it is an exciting adventure story that shows a hero's journey from discrimination to freedom. On the other hand, it is a boiling water, trying to clutch every story arc without thinking twice. Let me state how: -

It tries to add every political and social idealogy in one movie to showcase everyday life. However, by doing this, it overstuffs the already overstuffed story. First, we already the main story: Will Smith and Nick's investigation, Kandomere's suspicion, some weird-ass Asian girl who is part of a "Dark Lord". I am just concerned that they spoiled the movie by putting all the stuff in a 2-hour movie, which is almost impossible, as demonstrated by The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, etc. Then there were some shots showing how orcs are treated in everyday life with rap music playing in background. Now that was a very bad move! I mean what were they trying to be. I was also dissapointed on the perceived lack of action sequences, as even if they were there, they are just very soulless as if it's budget was like Mad Max 1(which wasn't. $90–106.2 million is less!?!?!)

Nonetheless, Will Smith is always a lousy douchebag who only cares about his family. David Ayer has yet again proved to be a better fashion designer than director as the make-up and costumes are top-notch. the world itself is very awe-strucking to look at, if not that much original.

Like watching two six year olds play fantasy cops in the backyard. And I dunno, maybe that's what they were going for, but I was expecting something with a little thought put into it, instead this is an Ed Wood or Troma level B movie. With higher paid actors?

But also there was a lot of great performances from actors, amazingly shot action scenes, there was a big chunk of entertainment and also a lot of fun. The dark humor for adult is really good and makes for some hilarious situations. I don't know what's with all the hate but I can assure you that the general audience would love this movie and they did. Sadly as I said at the beginning not all things where done or pushed to the limits, but what was really cared for where the visuals and that futuristic vibe combined with today's worlds. Also what a lot of people fail to see is the message of the movie. The ending really reflects on all the hate, racism and oppression with all these issues indicating issues from our real world. Overall it was a good movie entertaining and fun to watch but it could have been a lot better if the writer and director decided to give us more of the world, more immersion and mostly depth to the plot. Also it has some strange cop thing in it. From the get go the story doesn't connect to the one watching, as it throws a strange cop partner feud mixed with racism in it. That in combination with some poor lighting, the movie immeadiately breaks the anticipation of having a fantasy sci-fi movie starring Will Smith. It tries to make it interesting again by introducing magic as a very dangerous weapon, yet the people trying to collect the wand are easily Terminators themselves.

All in all i felt disatisfied with the movie, as it crushes all the potential it had for a standard affair or average moments. It is an underwhelming movie, i give it a 5/10.

Was intrigued by the difference between the critics and the average person, so I broke my longstanding aversion to netflix originals (make no mistake, 99% of them are garbage, Bright is the 1% that stands out) to check it out.

Bright is clearly an amateur hour production, with parts with cringe worthy dialogue (the racial crap is pathetic, immature, and clearly leftwing propaganda), in addition to a few scenes where you just can't hear the main characters talking.

That being said, Will Smith and the others are either great or at worst good actors, which makes for an enjoyable watch. If you like buddy cop movies you need to check Bright out. It's good and has a nice fantasy twist on an otherwise overdone genre. Will Smith is great as usual. Too bad they didn't flesh out the world more, but it is at its core a buddy cop movie first, the fantasy setting is unfortunately more of an afterthought than anything else.

The best way I can think to describe it would be a "pretty okay" movie. Not great, but not bad either. Worth a watch.

there were many great movies, which had very bad reviews at the beginning - demolition man, fifth element etc. Now they suddenly got a lot of better reviews, because they are said to be classics.
They are very good made entertaining movies, just like this one. Will it become a classic? i don’t know that for sure, but i think people will watch this movie in few years again, and then in the next few years again, because it is that kind of movie. It is funny, entertaining, great action, it has everything the classics had.

In the city of Los Angeles, people are up in arms over the first Orc to join the LAPD. No one is happy about it, least of all his partner, Daryl Ward (Will Smith) who has already taken a bullet because of him. One night, while out on patrol the pair come across a unique threat, one that could change the world forever, but can human and Orc come together to put an end to it? Could somebody please tell me what all the hype surrounding this movie is about? It is the biggest Netflix film to date, a sequel was announced before it even debuted, and while critics universally panned it, fans have turned it into a cult classic, dedicating all kinds of things to it on the web. As for me, I was excited about it, but just like every other David Ayer film I've ever seen, I was sorely disappointed. People were saying how unique and innovative this film is, maybe, if you've never seen another science fiction film before in your entire life! Every aspect of this film, from the racism towards other species to the integration of man and creature has been done to death! Themes like this in Science Fiction are metaphors for racial inequality and have been done in film and on television since the civil rights movement! Will Smith stars and once again thinks it's 1992, he's a teen heartthrob, and everything he says people are going to find hilarious. Much like Hancock, Ward is completely out of touch with modern audiences and geared toward a much younger crowd. I really don't understand how Will Smith can be outstanding in things like the Men In Black series and then just step back into roles like this. The rest of the cast was equally laughable, as was much of the story, but similar to Ayer's last big budget film, Suicide Squad, the plot is outstanding. It's the kind of thing that could have gone right so many different ways, but instead was just so badly butchered by shotty directing, terrible storytelling, and immature humor, that after a while, Bright is pretty much unwatchable. Will Smith and Joel Edgerton play opposite each other with alluring chemistry. Smith's frustratingly arrogant Ward and Edgerton's sincere and self-deprecating Nick keep alive two believable characters in a rather unbelievable world. The strength of the film's conception lies in its lack of explanation as we find ourselves in a Skyrim meets Bad Boys alternative, but not, reality. As we are dropped into a melting pot of humans and familiar faces from fantasy, we find we are set boiling over a blazing fire, and covered with a lid that promises a rich treatment of race and law enforcement in contemporary America. But as the action develops it feels as if the film changed recipes midway through. If it began a brilliant construction of the kind that wins Oscars, the creators blow it all up like a made-for-TV cop flick. A beautiful conception with compelling, believable characters, unbelievably denied the opportunity to make what would have otherwise been a memorable and lasting exploration of one of America's most important contemporary issues. The soundtrack is situational but I found it quite decent regardless. Both leads are perfect in their roles with Edgarton outshining Smith. The film has some decent action scenes and VFX but it throws out plausibility in the final 20-mins and that's its biggest disappointment. One other thing. This film had more of a tv series feel to it than a movie, especially since I watched it in 1/2 hr chunks. I think it would do better as a short series maybe. To me, its announced sequel equates to a second season. Expand

BUT THEN - the horrid writing and plot-holes became apparent. So much potential just to turn in to a splatter movie with pretty CG? I couldn't make it past the first out. This *must* have been a movie set as a movie release that the studios realized was junk and so sold it to Netflix, which isn't above bottom-feeding. And this movie qualifies. Horrid. Just horrid.

Just look no further than Dr. Seuss’ short story The Sneetches or the whole Mud-bloods vs. Pure-blood theme of the Harry Potter series.

However, if there is a comparison to be made with David Ayer’s latest creation that gives an End of Watch urban cop thriller spin to a Middle Earth-esque mythos; it would be Disney’s Zootopia.

Both movies use odd else-where settings (Zootopia with anthropomorphic animals, Bright with orcs and elves) in order to examine racism and the wealth disparities that exist within our own.

I certainly give Bright plenty of credit for it’s intriguing “Middle Earth in the modern day” concept and the large amount of money that was obviously put behind it (it’s the most expensive Netflix movie yet). From a visual effects and cinematograph perspective; it’s certainly the best-looking of the Netflix features that have been released thus far.

With all it’s impressively thrilling action sequences that have all the blood and grit of those nostalgic R-rated 90’s action flicks and wild shenanigans courtesy of the MacGuffin magic wand; nothing here feels cheap or like a glorified TV movie as with some past Netflix features.

But the film’s core strength is it’s two main leads.

I’ve always loved Will Smith ever since he first stepped out of that rare cab on the popular tv show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Smith has a natural “adorkable” charisma that lighten up a room and posses solid acting chops to boot. Even if he may not always be in the best movies (Wild Wild West, Concussion), Smith always manages to elevate things somewhat and Bright is no exception.

Smith, much like with his previous role of Deadshot from Suicide Squad, utters plenty of hilarious one-liners while also being a more morally grey character than his previous roles. Despite being despicably racist and mean towards his Orc partner, Smith brings a certain vulnerability and humanism to the role that gives the down-on-his-luck Daryl Ward compelling layers.

Smith also shares great Bad Boys-like chemistry with co-star Joel Edgerton, who despite having to act with pounds of prosthetic Orc make-up, manages to still turn in a very solid performance. While I wish Nick Jakoby’s backstory was more thoroughly explored, Edgerton still manages to be compelling by playing up to the character’s innocence.

Much like with Ayer’s and Smith’s previous heavy flawed but enjoyable Suicide Squad, if you can accept Bright on the level of being a B-level low fantasy action flick with solid action and funny dialogue; then it’s passably fun on that level.

However, upon watching this I can’t help but feel that the concept presented would have been better served if it was a six part Netflix miniseries rather than a movie. The script is written by Max Landis; a screenwriter full of clever ideas but can’t coalesce them into a great screenplay to save his life (Ex. American Ultra, Mr. Right, Victor Frankenstein).

In all honesty, the further away we get from Chronicle, the more that movie is starting to look like a fluke.

Where the aforementioned Zootopia was able to deliver a surprisingly fair and balanced portrayal of societal racism and prejudice from all angles while still telling a compelling coherent story, Bright is not able to do the same. The first twenty minutes of this movie in particular lays the racism subtext on way too thick with particularly heavy-handed lines such as “Fairy Lives Don’t Matter”.

Sheesh, and I thought Spike Lee lacks subtlety.

Landis is also pedestrian when it comes to developing the backstory and fantasy LA setting, with the fantasy elements seemingly placed at pure random at times. For the most part Bright’s LA looks like normal LA with Orcs and Elves in it, but other times with little explanation there would be Guillermo del Toro-style magical trees, gothic seedy churches surrounded by normal square buildings, and a Dragon flying in the background (I bet a certain Dothrakian queen is worried sick right now).

There is also a subplot involving an Orc gang and Nick that is very sloppily injected into the third act that honestly felt like padding and it’s made worse by the fact that it leads to a moment that is frustratingly ripped straight from Training Day!!

I really liked the concept, the action, and the two main leads but it’s execution and attempts at world-building left much to be desired. There is a sequel currently in the works and despite my reservations, I am still personally interested enough to see what lies in store for Daryl and Nick next.

Sometimes a movie filled with cliches cans still be enjoyable and even though Bright is filled with every cop movie cliche you can think of the fantasy spin does enough to keep it fresh.

The Breakdown

Performances - Smith has portrayed this type of character before so probably not a huge stretch, he is still enjoyable to watch with his natural enthusiasm flowing through.

This is my favorite Edgerton performance, slap some paint on the man and he really seems to fall into the role. If you didnt know it was him under all that makeup you would be hard pressed to guess who it is.

Supporting cast is pretty solid if not slightly cliche/generic, bad guys felt a little meh but again not terrible.

Visuals: Beautiful film across the board, i feel like they sat down with a map of L.A and put some thought into how it would look with fantasy inspirations. Makeup and sets are on point through out, CG was right up there as well.

Plot: This is probably my only really gripe, pacing feels really off and for a film that takes place of the course of a night it just seems to be a little rushed. I really really hope they expand on this world and either develop a series or more movies (i think one more film is at least in the works) as there is a lot to be explored here.

Overall, turn your brain down a little, dont over think it and enjoy everything this movie does right. Its not a dumb film but if you start thinking about the premise too much you are probably missing the point.

The acting was appropriate for the genre. Will Smith is great at playing Will Smith; not a necessarily a dig at the movie just at his range. Overall a well executed simple story (not a dig either) with exception of the dialogue, which could have been more engaging. And most importantly, kudos to the writer who did NOT turn an easily politicize-able topic into a SJW riddled fiasco (The Last Jedi). It addressed both sides evenly. Which, in part, is why I think the critics panned this movie; for the lack of police bashing disguised as "biting political commentary". Expand

Weirdly enough, this movie really didn't need to be set in a fantasy world. That was all purely extraneous window dressing. Despite that, this was an excellent movie, just not for the reasons you think.

The main criticisms I've heard are these. 1) The fantasy world was never explained. 2) Will Smith was unpleasant and didn't share chemistry with his partner. 3) The politics of the movie were incorrect or somehow missed the mark.

I'll take these in order and in doing so explain why this worked.

First, the setting. Yeah, the world was never really explained. That's because the movie was a personal drama between the two main characters. Everything else was just to either move them through their journey or give them something to push against. In some ways, I wonder if the fantasy world was purely meant to increase the profile of the movie and get eyeballs on it, while Ayers really just wanted to make a tough, realistic personal drama.

In any event, you're right, the world was never really explained. Maybe that's because Netflix wants to save that for the sequels, or the series. Maybe it's because the author and director wanted the audience to be able to fill in some of the elements in his world with elements in yours (the experience of racism, distrust of cops, media depictions of urban LA) while also making it seem different enough that this maintained a clear fictional element. Who knows. Most movies with an action element are littered with unbelievable plot MacGuffins which the movie tries to make believable. Bright just says "yeah, it's magic, don't worry about it". It's a refreshing change.

2) Will Smith was bad. I think this is, in truth, "Will Smith was unpleasant". The problem is, that's the point. He's meant to be a morally grey character. The movie probably can't let him fully turn heel, but they also didn't really want him being the usual wise-cracking boy scout. He was a guy struggling against his prejudice... or more accurately, who occasionally chose to struggle against his prejudice but was pretty successful when he did. I like the latter message, people ultimately have a choice whether to be biased, but many choose to never actually view it as a choice. I could see people hating how many of the early movie interactions between the partners were awkward and uncomfortable. Those guys were legitimately uncomfortable with each other, though both occasionally tried make it better. That's the point.

So, yeah, Will Smith was a truly unsympathetic character much of the time. That, to me, is playing the character and not playing stereotypical Will Smith.

3) The movie glorifies cops / denigrates cops (I've heard both) / oversimplifies racism / projects racial stereotypes onto the orcs/etc.

I don't have as strong an answer to this one. Yes, it embraces stereotypes, the movie is about people coming to grips with their own stereotypes. It leans into stereotypical media glamorization of gang life. It equates poverty with gangs and violence. All of these are true, but in part, rest on accusations that the movie promotes the wrong image by associating groups through its gaze. Poor and gangs are associated because they both show up in the same place. Stereotypes and racial minorities are linked because they show up in the same place.

The charge about stereotyping minorities is, to some extent, true. There are some lazy narrative moments where caricatures are the only thing you notice about some ethnic groups. Some of the criticism about politics seems a bit nit-picky; the movie is trying to tell a story about a person struggling against their own prejudice and they kind of have to show prejudice around him in order to make it work. There are some lazy choices, but they always seem to be in service of the main story whose message is a good one.

I will say, I don't quite get the arguments about the role of cops because they were both hero and villain, so it seems like a relatively fair treatment.

Anyway, the advertising may have been a bit deceptive because the fantasy world got top billing and never became more than scenery and a plot device. As a film and a narrative, it's excellent.

I got drawn in by the premise, modern fantasy were there is no masquerade? It sounded like a lot of fun, and reminded me of Shadowrun in some ways.

Watching the movie itself, however, it had kind of a slow start. The way it handled Orcs, the police and all that jazz was done in a pretty heavy handed way and obviously supposed to reflect how it's going over in the US. Once stuff like the Inferni and Wands got involved and we moved away a bit from the social commentary it started getting better.

That being said, the story was still fairly clichéd. McGuffin that the bad guys are after that the good guys need to protect that only certain people can use, though in the end our hero proves to be some chosen one. The action itself was still fairly decent, the characters varried. I really love Joel Edgerton's performance as Nick Jakoby. A lot of other actors just seemed to ham it up, especially the other cops. Who were behaving almost cartoonishly d*ckish at some point.

Overall, I'd have liked a bit more info on the world around and the history. Most of what we get is "there was a Dark Lord 2000 years ago, the Orcs sided with him and that's why we hate those guys" with a few other small snippets thrown in. I mean, I'm sure I would have complained if we got a plot dump too.

Anyway, I'm rambling. It was a decent movie overall. I'm glad they tried it, even if it wasn't the greatest. And if it ever gets a sequel, I might give it a chance.

I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I turned this on, but the trailer got me hooked. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by Bright. Kudos to Netflix for trying something new.

For starters, the movie gets major props for blending Tolkein-like creatures in a modern day big city -- a concept I'd never seen before. As such, there was a surprising amount of world-building that goes on which immerses you in this racial/class dynamic in between Elves, Humans and Orcs and the fallout of a magical war that happened prior to this movie taking place. The characters slowly explain the background plot to the audience in their dialogue with each other, giving you enough of a gist to follow along. There's still a lot more left to explained about this world, particularly the foreshadowing of an upcoming big bad, but it doesn't detract from the plot we see in front of us. If anything, it leaves me both satisfied and wanting more.

The characters themselves are portrayed well, with Jakoby stealing the show hands down. Surprisingly, Will Smith's performance leaves more to be desired, but he doesn't necessarily hurt the story. Noomi Rapace was fierce and I found myself actually feeling tension when she and her posse came after our heroes. All in all, I enjoyed Bright. I am definitely piqued by this realworld-Tolkein situation and I am eager to see more in the upcoming sequel.

I loved this movie , it was funny , smart . Action was good , interaction between main characters felt real .In many ways it set up move for future works in this universe . Its not movie for everyone , but for me it well worth time spend .My advice is to watch it and then decide for yourself .If your opinion matches critics it your right , but if you liked this movie , why do you need critics ? This movie is bad. It’s slow, unoriginal, and ruins a great premise. So if you have Netflix, skip it

It was a bit muddled on the genre and what it wanted to be, but it was a competent movie. I cared about the characters and what happened to them, and it kept up the tension from first major action to climax.

It's a bit of a Hellboyish fusion of fantasy and action in a contemporary setting.

It was a little clunky in parts sure, but it did not take away from the intensity of the movie. There was a lot to explain in the span of a movie timeframe so that is understandable. The world and characters it introduced are new and intriguing and left me wanting more and hoping it would not be a one and done movie. Fabulous! I really enjoyed this movie, it is the type of movie I wish was made more often. I thought it was a good story, solid action, funny and a concept I wish was in more high quality productions. I hope they make at least a couple more.

This is actually really entertaining and well made movie. Always good to see Will Smith in action, actor that plays orc is great too or even better I could say. I watched it twice, and I'm pretty sure qill watch it again.

I am going to be honest, I have mixed feelings after watching this movie.
After hearing about its release date / seeing the trailer I knew I had to see it (good or bad). Reading the first reviews got me thinking about the major difference in opinions between public and critics.
The conclusion from my point of view is that the movie is pretty bad, the only thing holding it together is the visuals and the world they were trying to create (on which they probably should have focused more on).
In many situations it reminded me of Suicide Squad (and all of its flaws). The character chemistry was bad, most of the plot points were lost along the way replaced by explosions and violence, and that didn't help the movie in any way. Basically it didn't captivate me one bit, there were only minor moments when it caught my attention, the rest was mostly unrelatable and impersonal.
It was not as bad as critics said but it was not nearly as good as the major public considered. I am now waiting to see if the sequel could be some improvements (but that is highly likely).
I am new at this review "thing", so please feel free to share your thoughts on my review. Thank you!

However I was pleasantly surprised with a competent cop drama that has the guts to play with sensitive issues. I quite liked the characters, especially the orc Jakoby. The world in the movie gave me a lot of Shadowrun vibes, but of course it wasn't as integrate and nuanced as the world of Shadowrun but it did pull of the world in a way that makes a bit of sense.

Would definitely recommend a watch to quench the thirst after all the bad movies that came out in 2017

Great film. They could have went into the lore a little bit more but if you pay attention you can pick up on some things. I really look forward to them going into what it means to be a Bright and the repercussions in the second film.

I was hoping it would be an interesting take on race and policing, but it isn't. Any social commentary they were aiming for with the segregation of society between the mythical races is too heavy-handed, not to mention overshadowed by the lazy stereotyping of the film's human characters. The Hispanic characters are awful caricatures, not to mention this being the second movie in a row David Ayer has made literally featuring a Latino gang-member with a tattooed face. From the angle of the story arc itself, it ends up rushed, poorly explained, and you never quite get what's going on or why you should care about any of the stakes. While watching this with a friend, I can't even count how many times she literally said "this should be a video game", which is a medium in which it may have worked (or longer-form TV show? Will Smith is charming and charismatic as ever but pretty much just plays the exact same character he plays in every cop or action movie (think Independence Day, I Robot, Men in Black, Wild Wild West, or even Suicide Squad) and it would be nice to see him playing something else. Joel Edgerton was also fine, his character was fairly likable but again, if I knew more about his story that would help me care about his plight.

All-in-all, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. One final note, to anyone who thinks that this movie is getting trashed by critics because of some global movie critic conspiracy against streaming services, this was just a bad movie. Just look at the critic scores for two other films by Netflix, Mudbound and Okja, which are 85 and 75 respectively, so clearly they're pretty inconsistent with their global conspiracy.
