Sasha Cohen, but posing as an anti-semite, anti-gypsy, character is targeting those peoples. People may see it as comedy, but it is focused around Southerners and Midwesterner opposed to cosmopolitan New York. Why? Simply, because the movie a big joke. All the people who understand that this is not an insult against jews or gypsies is in on the joke. The rest, well it means, they are not in, and it will appear offense. It boils down to simply, if you are offended, you shouldn't be. Expand

To help them understand this. The movie laughs at prejudice itself. When a person makes a offensive cultural remark, you laugh at the crazed mind of the person making the remark. The movie also laughs at certain groups of people who are so wrapped up in certain habbits that it reaches intensely obsessive levels. I think we should stop worrying about political correctness all the time and learn to laugh at ourselves. The human race has some funny habbits! Expand

Outrageous, totally original humor that rolls over you in slap-happy waves. Nothing stands in the way of Cohen's democratizing, pitiless satire, a uniquely Mad view of the universe that gives scatology an honest name.

You may blame it on Jackass, or MTV, or whatever the scapegoat of your choice is. The jokes he makes are what, unfortunate as it may be, millions of people say everyday. Sure, we'd like to believe that anti-semitism, racism, etc no long exists. Fact is it does, and it's not going away anytime soon. Critics say there are 2 groups, those who get it and love it and those who dont and hate it. I don't think it's quite as simple as that. There are people who don't get it and hate it. Then there are people who don't really get it, but laugh cause they're idiots. Next are those who get it but are too full of themselves to laugh. And the last category appreciates the film and the other idiotic members of the audience. Bravo, a multi-faceted film which lets some of us laugh at everyone else, including ourselves for being such bigots. Expand

Borat in his diatribes against Jews is racist through and through...until you take off the fake mustache and the bad suit to discover the British and Jewish Baron Cohen, who has been brave enough and witty enough to confront the racism lurking behind the veneer of American culture, pulls it into the limelight of a major film, and leave us ashamed for who and what we are. Borat tries hard to be the biggest idiot in the world, but he can never quite compete with his unwitting co-stars, few of whom are brave enough to stand up to him and many of whom exceed Borat in bigotry. I would think you would really have to have absolutely no sense of humor I honestly haven't laughed this hard at a movie since the South Park film. You definitely have to check the P.C. attitude in at the door before you see this one. I would think you would really have to have absolutely no sense of humor to not understand what exactly Cohen is up to with this film. 'Borat' is really quite an ingenious comedy. It's very stupid as all get out. And yet it's also very, very smart. There are moments in here that are both laugh out loud funny and then frightening as hell. As funny as this movie is, Cohen and co. really paint a painfully ugly portrait of American culture. The hypocrisy, racism, sexism, jingoism and homophobia on display are unsettling. And at the same time, just as you're cringing with embarrassment or disgust, you start to laugh. 'Funniest movie ever'? I doubt it, but it's on a short list of candidates. I know I pretty much laughed the entire 80 mins. of its running time. Oh, that hotel wrestling scene!!!!! It's one of the best movies of the year. Expand

Not only that, but most of the laughs come from the xenophobia implied by the 'weird Eastern bloc foreigner' who has incestuous relationships, is rude beyond belief, and has no social grace. It's a bit funny, but mostly it's just cheap high school grade yucks. Haha, look at that guy, he has sex with his sister. Isn't that HILARIOUS?? Actually, no-- it's not that funny. The funniest elements are mostly products of the embarrasing situations that come up, but many of these situations are excruciatingly painful to watch, especially when Borat is a jerk to people who are genuinely being kind to him. That's not very funny, in my opinion. It's rather mean-spirited. Yes, you'll laugh, but it's all cheap, fleeting humor. The sacking at the end is also incredible, despite the fact that it was probably staged. Regardless of what others might say, I maintain that Borat is a hilarious, refreshing and unique film. Expand

Those that are giving this film a 0 obviously are not intelligent enough to grasp the ideas presented beneath the surface. I don't hate them for it, I just pity them because they are missing out on what the film really is. Borat is a brilliant satire of American culture, exposing the ignorance of our society. Great stuff. To Jamie L., how can you like the TV show and not the movie? The material is the same essentially and is just built on a larger scale. Acting like there's some kind of intrinsic difference is just silly.

I thought it was one of the funniest films I have ever seen, and brilliant film-making. It showed that Sacha Baron Cohen is the bravest man in comedy at the moment. The rodeo scene is most memorable. To see people cheering what he said was very funny and disturbing. Then when they booed him singing the differnet words to the national anthem, I found very bizarre. Unlike other people, I did not think the film insulted humankind, and the toilet humour was of the hgihest order! After all, it is very important to make satire funny first of all as well as delivering its message, which is not particularly original. There are bigots all around us who are willing to get rid of the freedoms that people have died protecting in the past 100 years. Whether that be Civil Rights reforms, end of Apartheid or Women's suffrage. He mocked the opinion makers (humour consultants, politicians and etiqutte consultant) and the ordinary man (students, the rodeo people and the accountants). Finally, he was mocking himself by creating a character so rabidly antisemetic and speaking hebrew. Brilliant. Expand

Not that the verbal antics of Mel Gibson, Michael Richards and election-losing George Allen (whose use of a racial epithet might well have completely altered the political course of our country) haven't recently already raised this issue to the forefront of our national consciousness, but what's fascinating is that in spite of all the ignoramuses, jerks and cretins that our Kazhakhstani would-be documentarian encounters in America, I found Borat (perhaps accidentally) to be at least as encouraging and reassuring a portrait of America as it was disturbing. Keep in mind that in his travels Borat comes in contact with an equal if not greater number of kind, decent souls whose generosity and patience with him represent America at its best: the comedy instructor, the etiquette teachers (although their recent hop on the litigation bandwagon diminishes this), the elderly hotel owners (even if they really should arrange a few more visits from the Orkin man) and the incredibly sweet, good-natured drivers' ed guy (if I had a teenager who needed lessons, this is who I want for the job!) And in the film's best and funniest sequence, notice from some of the reaction shots of the rodeo spectators that Borat's increasingly outrageous and enthusiastically bloodthirsty comments in support of the US' "war of terror" are losing some of them long before Borat nearly starts a riot by mangling the National Anthem. Unlike most "fish out of water" movies ranging from E.T. to Splash to Moscow on the Hudson, Borat makes no effort to sentimentalize its lead character or even make him particularly likable, but Cohen (whose gay French NASCAR racer in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby was far more admirable than the title character) is savvy and skillful enough to provide the comic propulsiveness that allows us to partially identify with his quest for Pamela Anderson, even if he IS essentially stalking her! (Of course, if Borat really possessed any taste or discernment at all, the Baywatch babe he'd be going after would be Alexandra Paul.) Cohen and Charles certainly deserve credit for trafficking in the same type of ruthless, relentless, take-no-prisoners, if-you're-offended-along-the-way-then-we've-done-our-job pursuit of comedy that made Airplane, Animal House, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and the entire film output of Monty Python famous, but when the dust has settled, will Borat duplicate their legendary status? I doubt it, for the same reason I think this movie is more perfectly matched with its running time than virtually any other I've seen: 80 minutes is the ideal length for what is essentially (however uproarious it may be, and often is) the world's longest Polish joke! Borat's an interesting one. Borat tries to be many things, a parody, satire, pure comedy and mockumentary, however, it succeeds at neither, but does a good job all around. The movie relies on the premise of the stereotyped Baltic man, Borat's an interesting one. Borat tries to be many things, a parody, satire, pure comedy and mockumentary, however, it succeeds at neither, but does a good job all around. The movie relies on the premise of the stereotyped Baltic man, unfortunately, that doesn't resonate with the audience, as no-one really believes that a Kazakh would be like Borat, so that parody is lost. Secondly, as a satire, it hits and misses. It illustrates the differing cultures and oddities in America yet fails to really highlight the prejudice of America, partly because these prejudices are fueled by Borat himself, a crude person that no-one would like. Sure, some frat boys said something, but they were drunk and were some random bigots. Deep. Moreover, we see more of Borat's prejudices (like about women, Jews and homosexuals, which doesn't illustrate anything because no-one in their right mind would think that a Jew would need money thrown at it. In a way, this movie comments more on Sasha's prejudices than America's. As a mockumentary, it works as well as any other mockumentary out there, nothing groundbreaking. As a comedy it works. This is a movie that is supposed to make you laugh, yet make you feel bad for laughing. Yet half of the gags were slapslick, [***SPOILER***] like his driving, the bear and the naked scene--no social commentry there. So if you laughed at them, it doesn't really illustrate your prejudices, just that like everyone, you may find humour in a bear making little kids terrified. In all, this hits and misses as a commentary on American and worldwide prejudices. It would be better if Borat wasn't some crude stereotype and went around and asked people questions about their beliefs. Sure it wouldn't be as funny, but it would highlight the bigotry in this world a lot better. When I saw Borat, the people in the cinema didn't treat it as a satire, a comment about society, but simply a gross out film. If it tried to be a commentry on our world, it has failed. I gave it a four, 8 for a comedy, 2 for a satire. Expand

Comedy is not nice. The Look, comedy is supposed to hurt. It can be cruel, uncomfortable, juvenile, cretinous, all for the sake of advancing a sharp observation or two, or blasting through a taboo, or simply cramping you up with laughter. Comedy is not nice. The Greeks knew this. So did Lenny Bruce. Most people, however -- Americans included -- are obsessed with being perceived as nice while sometimes saying not-so-nice things. This is what "Borat" is really about. Well, that and a naked fat guy running through a sales convention. Sacha Baron Cohen's tatty, low-budget prank-a-thon was both the most overhyped movie of the year and the most underrated, the smartest and the stupidest, the most bigoted and the most open-minded. (It was also the funniest. Hands down.) In other words: a movie that encapsulated the extremes of our culture and our times better than almost any serious movie you can name. In all, this plucky little fellow from a mythical Kazakhstan -- acting extremely nice while spewing ignorance in every direction -- fit right into the American scene. Sinclair Lewis would have recognized the people Borat meets, and even Chaplin might have found in him a rude, crude modern descendant: a Little Tramp for an age of industrial-strength complacency. First unleashed on the world in a series of BBC comedic sketches on the Woe unto those nations that cannot take a joke, fo they become more buttlike in the unlaughingness of their overreacts (as Borat would surely mangle the phrase). First unleashed on the world in a series of BBC comedic sketches on the Cambridge alumnus Cohen's Da Ali G Show and later picked up for domestic consumption by HBO, Borat is the ugly American (or Brit) from elsewhere: a clueless, gangly, mustachioed moron prone to anti-Semitic tirades so subversively over-the-top that the only serious reaction is giggles. This feature-length expansion of Cohen's deliciously ridiculous character accomplishes what decades of Soviet propaganda failed to do: It points out and underscores issues of race, religious intolerance, classism, and all manner of very American social ills by giving the culprits just enough rope to hang themselves by their own petards (and then some). On the face of it, Borat is a mockumentary. It follows the titular clod and his producer, Azamat (Davitian), from their backwater Kazakhstan hovels (where Borat lives with his sister, "the number four prostitute in all of Kazakhstan!") to America on an ostensible mission of discovery and cultural growth. Almost immediately, however, the lovesick Borat falls for the image of Pamela Anderson, and the film heads west with marriage on its mind. In between Borat's arrival in New York City and the end of his epic quest are some of the most fearless acts of transgressive comedy in years. Forever in character, Cohen wrangles invitations for Borat to poshly racist Southern dinner parties, meets with nonplussed feminists (where he compares the size of the female brain to that of a squirrel), wanders dazed and confused into a holy-rolling pentecostal megachurch, and scares the bejesus out of Baywatcher Anderson. This is shockingly blunt comedy and shockingly funny, too. Cohen and Davitian are utterly fearless, poking fun not only at Americans but at the stereotype of the foreign Other as well. As of last weekend, a massive intra-studio bidding war for Cohen's next film has erupted. Oddly, the Kazakhstan Ministry of Information has gone quiet. If they're biting their tongues as hard as I did, they're going to need stitches. Expand

All you people who are so wildly against this movie are the kind of people this movie targets. All of you shaking your head at this movie remind me of a certain veteran vetenarian Ali-G had met. How can you try to knock this movie for having dirty humor? There's nothing here that comes close to when Borat had a crowded southern bar singing "Throw the Jew Down the Well", but he comes close (and Cohen is actually Jewish, so anyone trying to call him a racist is an idiot). The things he got the college kids to say, the ones who will some day be independent citizens of our country, was amazing. And how is it not funny to see the reactions of people he tries to politely kiss? Are we that uncomfortable with our sexuality that kissing, dirty words, and naked wrestling cross the line? Scratch the last one. That was filthy. If you don't like getting made fun of, then yeah, you'll hate this movie. But if you're willing to just laugh at the amount of racism, hostility, and ignorance left in this country, then this movie is mind blowing. There's also a level of kindness as well. The Jewish couple he "escapes" from were a ray of hope. I'm not going to argue if you just don't agree with the humor. Personally, I think movies like Norbit, Wildhogs, and National Lampoons are offensively unfunny, but hey, that's just me. I'm sure there aren't any critics who share my opinion. Expand

While there is a sense in which this is true, the real humor does not lie Many of the complaints about Borat are that the humor is crude and mean, even to the point of being cruel to the other people in the film who are not in on his joke. While there is a sense in which this is true, the real humor does not lie in Borat calling a woman unattractive, but in the reactions of people around him as they occasionally challenge him but more often fail to stand up to the bully. Borat is a bully, without doubt, and the edgiest part of Sasha Baron Cohen's humor is that he uses this character to draw other people into complicity with the bigotry and cruelty that he puts on. Baron Cohen's humor is risky, and the laughs come at a cost. He must exploit the people in his film in order to create the situations that generate the humor, and he also exploits us as an audience by demanding that we laugh at Borat, also forcing us into a kind of complicity. Humor tends to function on the premise of laughing at someone, and by cajoling unwitting subjects to become objects of humor, Baron Cohen pushes the limits for what is acceptable in comedy. Borat is a satire of America, but also a test case of the ethical boundaries of comedy. Expand

I saw the feminist part in a clip online before the movie came out. Just based on that I considered it a flop. But the reviews were so great, I had to go see what I was missing.
