This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, first off, I can see why this is is seen by some as a controversial movie and why the people of Kazakhstan complained about the stereotypes the character put across, I'd be embarrassed if I came from there.

It is quite funny and interesting to see the reaction of different Americans to him, including a group of feminists in NY and a humour coach. It is pretty uncomfortable viewing though, or it was for me anyway, knowing that the Americans in the movie had no idea about the character or anything, although of course it wouldn't really work had they known but it did seem somehow unfair on them and alot of people seemed very uncomfortable at such an over the top foreigner who says very outlandish and rude things. Some of the things that are said in response to him and what he says are quite surprising and interesting at times though, a scene involving Borat singing supposedly the Kazakh national anthem to the tune of the US anthem, at a rodeo show, springs to mind, where people were clapping though what he was saying wasn't very positive.

You can tell that some people are particularly homophobic/racist and wary of foreigners and its this insular part of US (or western in general I suppose) society that the movie is, I suppose, trying to highlight.

It is quite funny in a silly, over the top way in parts, the way Borat behaves, the things he does and says and in other parts of the movie, its really quite uncomfortable viewing, as I said. He uses very strong and sexual, sexist language quite frequently and so I'd say that this isn't recommended for those who are easily offended really (particularly jews).

I feel this probably does have something of a message or a moral behind it somewhere but its a bit too over the top for my personal liking in general, however I can see that some would find this very funny, like those who like to see reality TV contestants get humiliated and I did laugh at it in parts but I did also feel a bit guilty about laughing at it sometimes, considering its not particularly tasteful, really. Then again, if you know much about the character of Borat or the actor, then this shouldn't surprise you.

It also had me wondering near the end of the film, which set of stereotypes it was sending up or questioning but I guess its both, that of a foreigner in another country, otherwise known as being a 'fish out of water' and also of some particularly narrow minded natives, while showing that others are actually quite accepting and tolerant of what would normally be seen as very offensive talk or behaviour, thats almost so over the top in a sense that because he's clearly a foreigner, they let it pass.

I don't know if its particularly fair for him to make Kazakhstan seem such a 'backwards' country but I can see that its done as pure satire really, so it shouldn't, of course, be taken entirely seriously. Its certainly not a movie for everyone though, thats for sure.

Well this is clearly a movie that not everyone will laugh out loud at, or particularly enjoy. As I've said already, this isn't for those who are easily offended, if your not sure if you might be offended by this movie then I'd say its best you not try it really, it could be offensive to some, though I don't think it should be taken too seriously either.

I think if you like the character Borat or are a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, then you should definitely watch this, if you haven't already. It is particularly over the top and zany in some parts and you can laugh at it from the sheer craziness of it, or at least I did at some parts but I equally felt kind of uncomfortable watching other scenes, given the situation and knowing (from what I remember reading in the press regarding the movie when it first came out) that the American citizens genuinely weren't aware about the movie being filmed etc. even if it was all acted, its still kind of uncomfortable viewing in a way but im sure some would find it quite funny, though given some of the sexist and anti semitic dialogue/'jokes', I wouldn't like to think people would laugh due to agreeing with it!

I think its alright, it is trying to make a point which is kind of fair enough and some parts of it is funny in a way. Obviously this isn't a movie for everyone, like I keep saying and its certainly not for kids (hence the 15 rating it has), there is a scene which features nudity and it almost shows too much, put it that way, so again it will be seen as offensive and over the top to some but to others it probably is really funny. I feel personally im somewhere on the fence about it (if you know what I mean lol), not being a particular fan of Sacha, though I'd heard people at work and most everywhere talk about this movie in the past, so I thought I couldn't not watch it eventually, it seems everyone has seen it, so, now I can be included in that statistic! that doesn't mean its an excellent film though.

A comedy classic and one of the best comedies of the 2000's.
As much a social commentary as it is a riotously good time.
Unlike Baron Cohen's previous cross over from the small screen (Ali G Indahouse), this is far from a dud.

Sure, it makes fun of American culture, mocks conservative Americans, is anti-semitic sometimes even, but it's so overblown. It's less than 90 minutes long, with most of the scenes leaving a feel of disappointment in me. It's entertaining, but it's not a milestone of comedy in my opinion. Expand

Borat: Cultural Learnings of American for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was fairly amusing, but nothing more than that.

The satirical idea for the film is simply brilliant. The character of Borat is racist, misogynist, raunchy, and just downright vile in the way he acts. And the Americans he talks to either do not realize what is going on, or actually agree with him. The tour he takes across the United States involves a plethora of random, everyday citizens being duped in this fashion.

But unfortunately, it is a one-note joke. The film loses steam after thirty minutes, and can barely pick up afterwards. The proceeding minutes had their share of laughs and shocks, but nowhere near as much as the first little bit. It just sets itself up far too well, and fails to live up to its original design. The execution really should have told people from the start that it would not work for a ninety minute long film.

There are no proper words to describe Cohen and his schtick. It really is a sight to marvel all on its own. His dedication and perfection in this role is nearly unheralded in my mind.

Overall, I would recommend everyone to watch and enjoy it.

Once you thought a new scene was coming they could have some great opportunity for humor it was a let down. Sasha Baron Cohan’s Showtime show was much more thought out and hit the point of the times more effectively than this movie. A lot of hype for a less than mediocre film. Expand

Sacha's skills on questioning as an interviewer are no match to his answers that he voluntarily whispers.

Borat: The Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan

Sacha Baron Cohen remains the raunchiest witty comic personality to this day and his work couldn't define him better than this political comedy. This political agenda that it pursues or lives and dies for, isn't actually political. Very early in the film, the premise gets lost and you are left with an outdated man in an out-of-comfort territory trying to fit in. This cultural difference that Sacha has created remains mythical. In the sense that whenever he compares, and he does compare a lot, to all the new things he, as entitled to and is keen towards, insists on learning is often mashed on your face with absurd level of wrong-ness that leaves long gasping of air in the room rather than a riot of laughter.

And this is what it looks forward to. Not that it doesn't consist of belly aching laughs, there are plenty of ongoing gags like Cohen's jealous neighbor, his way of greeting, him describing his family and his love for a TV star actress that he found out just last night. Addition to that, his political incorrectness, social incompetence, communication problems, gender inequality, hygiene issues and unflinching honest confessions are just a few other things that adds up to the laughter.

And crafting this very unearthly character Sacha never persists on us to get manipulated or fall for his views. It is not later on, until you feel this. For, for the time being you do feel sorry for him, that empathy is what Sacha inadvertently works on and can't help himself but make his audience fell normalized by his behavior, his language, something that would be off putting and maniacally dangerous, if peeled off and observed individually. Borat remains a genius authentic comic adventure for its effortless procedure, it is so simple that no one could come up with it.

Obviously, in front of such a film its difficult to remain indifferent but, whether you like it or hate it, truth has to be said: it's a funny movie that uses (abuses) non-sense comedy but it's very hard to digest. Despite having the laudable courage to break hundreds of taboos and talk about things that would never be addressed in a movie in other way, it does so with a deeply offensive comedy, ungrateful for those who are subject of the jokes. In this film, the target shot down by Sacha Baron Cohen is the "politically correct". The character himself, a pseudo-journalist from Kazakhstan, is brilliant because he can convey to reality all our preconceived ideas when we think of someone from that remote region of the world. Unfortunately, he does it in a very offensive way for Kazakhstan itself, which earned the British comedian intense (and understandable) criticism, coupled with criticism of the film's anti-Semitic humor (Cohen himself is a Jew). The film also criticizes the US and the American way of life. I was always unsure if the people who came out in the movie were aware that they were being filmed for a humor film but, whether as non-sense humor or as severe social criticism, the film works.

The movie is good for anyone who likes non-sense comedy and does not mind being the subject of some jokes. For all other audiences, it may seem indigestible for several reasons. Kids, in particular, should not watch this movie. Only an absolutely clueless father would let a child watch a movie like that.

I love Sacha Baron Cohen's works, and even though I'm truly amazed by the things he dares to do, Borat was a little uncomfortable to watch. At times it was simply disgusting, and I don't see how those scenes add any humor or meaning to the movie.

In a strange way though, it also says some rather nice things about our country, simply by comparison to Borat's backwards, savage little home. Ultimately though, it's offensive, vicious, and unrelenting in its satire of everyone and everything. It's also ridiculously funny. There are things in this film that will literally blow your mind. A day after I saw it, I still have a hard time believing that the Borat's big finale actually happened. How does he get away with it? It's a rare movie that manages to be disgusting, filthy, and incredibly intelligent all at once. Sacha Baron Cohen is a genius, and his new film is a comedic masterpiece. Oh, and wow wow wee waa is it ever funny. Expand

There is no doubt this movie is hysterical, anyone who doesn't find this funny really must have something wrong with them, but how far is too far to push the envelope? I don't get offended easily, but lines like "Senator Chocolate Face" and "the Jews repeating their attack of 9/11" were more than slightly over the line. While the line is much further away in the uncensored market, it does still exist, and Cohen does cross it on several occasions. I laughed until I cried, Borat is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I was however offended by several of the things he said and that's why It gets 4 instead of 5 stars. Expand

Remember Charlie Chaplin making fun of Hitler? or Team America making fun of China? come on!!! and other dozen movies that come to my mind. Or how about the whole country making fun of their own elected president on national media (George W. Bush) because he was holding a book upside down! I say hypocrites. Leaving my aggravation aside, the movie it's just daring, very brave and smart. It's not perfect but it sure was one of the best comic movies of its time. Expand

It isn't smart, funny, witty or anything like that which a comedy film SHOULD be. It's just stupid, ridiculous, offensive and sooooooooo graphic. Some of the things it says, some of the things that happen... I swear it should be banned.

Worst film ever. If you want a good comedy, try something like Hot Fuzz.

Then prepare to wet your diaper in glee because its Borat. Believe it or not, I actually saw this one with my parents. I remember that day it was at the cheap theatre just in case it sucked and we got our moneys worth $1 but I can never replace the time lost. To start off, the jokes weren't funny and repetitive a bad combination in my book. The running joke is that he is from Kazakhstan and doesn't know much about America which is totally ignorant because... the funny thing is.... people in Kazakhstan know more about America than Americans know about Kazakhstan. Sometimes, it seems that Ali G, pulls down his pants and shits on the culture which is as insensitive as the "American" culture Ali is trying to portray. After the movie I didn't even have to ask my parents what they thought, they straight up said," Maybe if you cut out all of the story you could have put it on a crappy version of SNL, Madtv perhaps, and spared everyone of the story." That was my dad... My mom,"It seems like they put all the best jokes in the commercials, which could have been on MadTv as a fake commercial." And I said,"Ya, the movie based itself on a joke that just sucked." And they both concluded, "Ya, we kinda saw that, we knew it was going to suck, we just wanted to see the movie that was supposed to be revolutionary." ("Ya that movie was pretty forgettable,"... "What movie?" And we all laughed) that part didn't actually happen but it pretty much summed up how we felt. Its actually funny I wasn't going to see the movie until my parents took me because I didn't want to see the movie that spawned, "High Five", "Great Success", and "Very Nice" the phrases I heard everywhere too many times and I didn't think were funny at all. And it seemed like everyone was watching it because it was controversial. Why did I give it a 3? I think that the movie actually tried to make a good joke and completely failed in execution. Expand
