Gritty, dark, beautiful, scary, alien. Five words that I can use to sum up what Blade Runner represents to me. A brilliant film that ever science fiction fan should make a point of seeing.

The very definition of cyberpunk. The best soundtrack to a movie ever, by the one and only Vangelis. Revolutionary from a technical standpoint. A great story. A true cult classic.

Everything looked and felt so ahead of its time. This is a classic example of neo-noir_ shady characters and a lot of detective work. The mood was consistently dark and forbidding. I haven't seen such impressive world-building elsewhere.

The plot followed a bunch of replicants, who are kind of cyborgs, on the loose. A blade runner, someone whose job is to track and kill them, is set on the case. Some detective work follows until the confrontations.

I especially liked the character of Roy Batty. He was the charismatic smiling yet menacing leader of the replicants. The villains were the best part, very conflicted and engaging, perhaps more so than the protagonist. That's what I loved about the movie. It was less about the plot than an opportunity to peep into a highly complex, morally corrupt future world which despite everything, was extremely appealing. It was a pleasant surprise to see Harrison Ford not portraying his self, even though there were hints of his attempts to do so but were mostly suppressed by probably the director.

The technology and architecture, and the general cityscape depicted was exquisite in its advanced and yet run-down state, like the future we were watching had already started to decay and deform, and we missed its pinnacle of prosperity. This Los Angeles of the future has little to no sun, a lot of rain, smog and an apparent Chinese majority. Except for the latter, where it is replaced by the Hispanic community, I think LA is headed that way. I especially liked the feel of it. The sense it evoked was one of deep, brooding hopelessness. The movie set the standard for much of the sci-fi flicks to follow.

This has to be one of the most puzzling movies I have ever seen. A single viewing may not yield feelings of grandeur and praise but a hint of disappointment. Only when I watched it again did I embrace it fully and connected with some characters, oddly from the wrong side of the conflict. The Final Cut version was ripe with such spectacle and detail that it would be worth it even if all else failed. The score, retro electronic music, enhances the experience and pleasure. A joy ride from start to finish, and a masterpiece in its originality and imagination.

The noir jazz music doesn't always mix well with the rest of the soundtrack. I kept wishing that the saxophone would just go away. Harrison Ford's voiceover also felt vey forced and cheesy to me. Other than some minor gripes however, this is still one heck of a movie. It's all enveloped in an eerie atmosphere unlike anything else out there. Much of this comes from the visual decisions. The art direction is superbly gothic and near non-stop rain plights the futuristic city of L.A. for almost the entire movie. The action is also unique in that it possesses a cold, strange, and gritty aesthetic, most evidently seen in the scene where Decker is being hunted by the lead replicant inside of the abandoned building. There are also scenes of emotional intensity here, mostly related to the replicants' yearning for a less abbreviated life. It's not as tightly directed as Scott's other sci-fi classic Alien, but what is? It makes up for this by tackling much more ambitious thematic content than that movie. It's mostly successful at this, but it still doesn't feel as weighty as it could have been to me. Perhaps it will grow on me with repeat viewings. Expand

Dick), special effects in this film will be made by legendary Douglas Trumbull, Vangelis will write music, starring charismatic Harrison Ford, beautiful Sean Young, ingenious Rutger Hauer ("tears in the rain" line is his invention) and young Daryl Hannah? Well, the movie will get a commercial failure and the avalanche of criticism in the United States. That serves as another proof that nor commercial success, nor critics reviews should not be taken into account when assessing the motion picture arts.

"Blade Runner" is one of the last specimens of the pure art in the mainstream cinematography - it's when public's attention is drawn not by hurrying plot, but by exquisite picture, the so-called atmosphere that combines a certain style of storytelling, visual style, including special effects, high-quality music and actors' ensemble. If we add to this some philosophical depth and give the public time to reflect on each episode, without being distracted (harassed) by the following one, you will get an almost perfect motion picture. And if you appreciate beautiful motion pictures, then "Blade Runner" is your movie.

As of the idea of "Blade Runner", it is not obvious and at the same time is simple, like all true ideas - if at the beginning of the movie Deckard required Voight-Kampff test in order to determine whether Rachel a human being or not, at the end just two questions were enough for this. Actually, no more are required.

9 out of 10

P.S. A small remark. If before watching "Blade Runner" you have not read the novel on which the movie is based - "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick - it is better not to read (otherwise you'll have false expectations). If you decide which version of the movie to choose, then just do not take "The Final Cut". I would suggest "The International Cut", as the most conscientious observance of neo- noir atmosphere and best explanation of the plot twists. Although "The Director's Cut" and unofficial (but most complete) "The Electric Unicorn Cut" have their advantages, but these versions are not as atmospheric and rather intended for hardcore fans of "Blade Runner". As I see it, director's hints on Deckard's artificial memory (dream about a unicorn and paper unicorn near his flat at the end, some dialogues) are excessive, contradict logic and unnecessary overcomplicate movie's main idea.

It is impossible for me to find out how they managed to imagine and construct the dark, gloomy future city of L.A in 2019, a civilized yet severely polluted metropolis covered with but dust, toxic rain and eternal darkness - exactly what is going to befall mankind in an intermediate future should we continue our eco-destroying behavior. Set in future, when men rely on Replicants - robots - to exploit it's colonies outside Earth and our planet is reduced to only a dead planet with no trees or green resources, Blade Runner is both a 80%-and-increasing prophecy about human tomorrow and a visually dazzling sci-fi thriller which has ensured it's place as one of the greatest sci-fi flicks of all times Expand

It's overwhelming in a tasteful sense, feeling like it's saturated but unavoidable and inevitable, a dark cynical but feasible future that lays at the back of our minds in our modern world. It reminds of the detail of Star Wars and Aliens, the former of which I'm sure inspired Ridley Scott and the latter an obvious predecessor. Even Deckard's cupboards and blinds resemble the halls and rooms of the Nostromo.

My issues however with the movie, and what sets it from going to the top, are that the substance is less than the scenery. The plot itself is riveting, but the detail and development is definitely thinner than the long scenes and abundant set flourishings belie. The tension between the characters is just as riveting, but there is much more implied than the dialogue holds up and their actions follow through on.

Ridley Scott had a lot of philosophical material to work with here, but unfortunately the writing doesn't take full advantage of it so it feels more in my head than onscreen. There's also some nonsensicle behavior by the characters seemingly for the sake of effect or drama, which I think got in the way of what could have been some real brain-twisting questions with the androids and what humans are capable of creating.

Overall, unforgettable for me, and growing up, a unrivaled definition of a dystopic alternate-future, as if Ridley took a camera through his own mind exploring every dark grated tunnel and over-populated night street. Deckard's apartment alone is unforgettable for its abundance of technological art forms, but I only wish there was more meat to this bone as there was garnishings.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Blade Runner has many quotable lines and stunning special effects. Blade Runner was an innovative Science Fiction movie and it is a timeless classic. One of my favourite lines in the movie is when Tyrell
and Roy are talking to one another. "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long and you have
burned so very brightly Roy. I've done questionable things, also extraordinary things revel in your time.
Nothing the god of biomechanics wouldn't let you into heaven for." The music that plays during this scene
transmits a haunting mood to the audience. The music perfectly fits the scene and the style of the movie.
Blade Runner was and will always be a triumph in the Science Fiction/Action genre.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For those who are unfamiliar with a neo-noir its a movie that revolves around several cinematic elements like mystery crime and thriller, with a smoke haze atmosphere and stylish cinematography with reduced used of lighting to create blackened atmospheres, now Ridley Scott will redefine the genre with a dash of sci-fi with philosophical and thematic elements and we get a legendary masterpiece of what would the future be like from the mind of acclaimed writer Philip K. Dick

Harrison Ford is chilling as the veteran blade runner Rick Deckard, of 2017 dystopian LA now a massive multicultural community covered heavily in rain and smoke, now run by private businesses who rely on replicants (androids built to look like humans) to work off planet in the lunar colonies to help power the city. Rick is assigned to one final hunt to destroy four escaped replicants (featuring Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah) on the run who have illegally entered LA, but he later finds his aggression to replicants challenged when he meets Rachel (Sean Young) a newly designed replicant who is unaware she is one herself, which frustrates Deckard till he sees for himself the senselessness of his job as a blade runner which also questions if he is really human or not.

Ridley Scott's mythological visionary is poured out its a defining new screen legend that questions the humans value life in the future and the possibilities of the machines wanting the same value as ours, one of the greatest sci-fi masterpieces since 2001 A Space Odyssey, a dystopian flick for the human soul and not for the feint of heart, a film that will define another kind of film of such significance

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Blade Runner is an outstanding movie in certain areas, but it's lacking in other areas. The visuals are simply outstanding; they succeed in capturing the dark and gritty feel of futuristic Los Angeles. The film's greatest weakness is its storytelling. While the proposition behind it is interesting (cop tries to take out dangerous human-like androids), the story feels quite mundane and soulless at times. As a result, the film drags on at times and leaves you wishing for it to end (though it does become more interesting later on). While Blade Runner isn't a bad movie, I'd recommend several other movies before this one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NOTE: I watched the Final Cut of the film, the official director's cut of the film which is what the director considers to be the 'complete' film.
Blade Runner was released in 1982 and was directed by Ridley Scott. It is about Rick Deckard, a 'Blade Runner' (kind of a policeman), who is assigned to terminate some Replicants (workers on an outer space mining colony) who have escaped from their post and reached Earth.
This is often called one of the greatest science-fiction movies ever made and that is definitely for good reason. Preparing for this film, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw on-screen.
Undoubtedly the best thing about this film is the theme that it explores and one that is likely to stay relevant for much time in real life; what human life really is. Most of us just take our life for granted as it is just what we have expected to be there for our entire lives so we never really question it or take a deeper look into it. This movie expresses the theme of what human life means very well as it explains it from the point of view of beings who aren't lucky enough to have that life (the Replicants) and the reason the audience now see it as so important is because it is expressed from that certain viewpoint.
The visuals are a big thing in this film and they are absolutely stunning and they remain some of the best I have ever seen in a film (along with 2001: A Space Odyssey). The colour and design choices help create an amazing landscape and adds a dark feel to the place too. I also believe that the visuals aren't just there just because they can but they also do add something to the movie too; the characters of the Replicants all simply want a human life and the beautiful look of all of the locations simply adds to their desires so therefore I think that the visuals add lots of extra effect to the film, not just for the viewer but also for the story and themes.
I find the Replicants themselves, Roy Batty (the main antagonist) in particular, to be the most interesting part of the film as I haven't seen any other characters like them in a film before. Instead of just being plain greedy and power-hungry villains, they only want the things they are after because they believe that they don't have a fair lifestyle compared to the humans and that they were only created for slavery. You can also see how hurt they are too, like in the scene where a Replicant is asked about his mother which agitates him as he has no mother and just simply wants one like every other human. The scene in the film that stood out to me the most was when Batty saves Deckard's life just so he can teach him the value of life and that he shouldn't waste what he has and the death of Batty's character that occurs afterwards was effective as the audience now felt for his character more than any of the actual humans because he had expressed his viewpoints well.
One of the biggest debates about this film and a question left at the end is if Rick Deckard, the main protagonist, is a Replicant or not. This was kind of left ambiguous at the end and I guess that was the final result after many people on the movie were debating whether he was human or not. I'm intrigued to see what the sequel does with this plot line and if it'll answer it or keep it ambiguous. If Deckard does turn out to be a Replicant then there'll be a lot of explaining to do.
Overall, this was a great film and definitely one of the greatest science-fiction films ever made in my opinion, with an interesting and effective theme and also many other things such as the visuals which aren't just thrown in there for the audience's delight but also for the characters too. I would highly recommend this film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this dark and gloomy look of this futuristic slum-like Los Angeles in 2019. It perfectly supports the bizarre atmosphere of the lightly philosophic and dramatic story of blade runner. The Cast also does a very good job, especially Harrison Ford (Rick Deckard), Sean Young (Rachael) and Rutger Hauer (Roy Batty) are excellent in this movie and their characters are most important to represent the problem of androids that are a bit too human. I think the strong points of blade runner are definitely the long (based on how long you see it on the display) and distant shots in calm, emotional situations (maybe compared to more modern productions a bit too long) and the much faster cuts in action sequences; the effects that were very well for the conditions of 1982 and are even compared to today's movies not bad; the music, a mix of classic tunes and synthie-sounds and the well-acted characters. For me a weakness of 'Blade Runner' is that sometimes for example when someone dies it's often way too dramatic presented. But all in all Blade Runner is a very good and dramatic Science-Fiction movie that has a very interesting philosophical approach and deals with questions like 'what is life?' or 'how much are humans rulers over other individuals?' and 'cause of that breaks the frame of classic sci-fi movies. When some of these replicants escape from the place where they were forced to work and end up in Los Angeles, looking for to meet their creator and prolongate their lifetime. A cop, the Blade Runner, gotta hunt and "retire" the replicants group. Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples.
This film is a gamechanger, not just for the sci-fi, but for movies in general and in multiple ways, be in visual, in philosophy, style, you can se a lot of movies that use the aspects created in this film in other future classics after this.
The story can be very confusing and boring for some people, because of it's slowness, but i found that great, the dialogues in this movie are all very deep and smart, the narrative of this movie together with it's atmosphere puts you completely inside of the movie, the darkened Los Angeles, with the smoke everywhere, with different kind of people, all helps to put you inside of the movie, with it's strong colors, a very noir and investigative story that is very well set.
The world building in this is magnificent, a world build in 1.982 for a futuristic science fiction, using no cgi technologies, all practical effects where we can't see things dated, things are still visually relevant in now days and also one of the best futuristic universe made, using models, creating real things, it all make the movie not get ugly with time, not using bad cgi, i found all that really pretty and well made. The visual in the world, laden in neon and cyberpunk characteristics, so those lights together with the dark things, a world where is always night, it got really pretty and depressive visual, wich is perfect for what the movie is telling.
The philosophy situation in here, is giant, and we could list some film that surely got influenciated by this in it, wich would be Ghost in the Shell or Matrix for example. The discussion of the replicants and humans are fabulous, if someone develop emotions, and those emotions are exactly like the regular human ones, what could differ than from humans, what would make them less humans than us? The fact is their fights is totally relatable to stories in our society, people that got created just for one specific reason, and are enslaved to do that, created to have no emotions, and live a really few time, can't we relate that to our routine? Another big thing that i found really fantastic in here, is that the reason that the replicants are getting hunted by Deckard, is because they are considering dangerous and not humans by the people, the fun fact is that at the end of the day they got to be more humans than actual humans, the end of the movie is such of a masterpiece because of that, you got a "human" trying to "retire" a "monster" and suddenly such monster becomes more human than the human, that was a thing to think about, what are we doing with our lives, we actually living or just pretending. A memory in our mind is just a flash of something that have happened, a implanted memory is much different from that?
Another fantastic thing about this universe, is that what we are seeing is just a really small part of it, all the time they are talking about the giantic universe that happens around there, making it clear that Earth is just the scum of what exist, making it clear that who lives in this planet is only there because couldn't afford to live or didn't passed the texts to go out, so knowing that is a giant and rich universe is already a very interesting thing.
The soundtrack for this movie is, in my opinion, the best soundtrack ever made, what Vangelis did in here was unbelievable, i think that this song is probably the most imersive ever made, it talks so much with what is going on in the movie, it is a song that you can feel the waves getting inside of you and running in the veins, it is so much of a masterpiece.
Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty is the best character in the movie, by far, his acting is so on point, he is angry and agitated, but at the same time a very leader person, he does have some lines in this movie that are perfect, and in the way that he speaks it, just made everything better and created one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history, so as making us questioning who is the actual villain in this film. Sean Young as Rachael is also very perfect, she was in her voice very innocent, with a lot of doubts and discoveries, a very important character, love between a replicant and a human. Harrison Ford in some moments felt kind of disinterested, but maybe that is his character, and overall he wins it with his expressions. Daryl Hannah as Pris was really nice, her character was very interesting and i think that she could have been more explorated in this story. Joanna Cassidy and Brion James wasn't very explored, but they definely worked out very well.

It's a quintessential piece of science fiction filmmaking that explores interesting themes and builds a completely believable world for its characters to inhabit. I admire the film deeply for taking its time. Lingering shots, accompanied by Vangelis' hauntingly beautiful score, create a rich atmosphere for the audience to bathe in. The story is fairly straightforward, but its implications run deeper.

That said, it isn't perfect. Not like some people say it is. Even the best cut of Blade Runner has moments that drag on, and if I'm being honest, I didn't feel invested in many of the characters. Rutger Hauer is a standout in the mostly serviceable cast, bringing charm and swagger to his synthetic character. Ironically, most of the flesh and blood characters feel rather robotic. Perhaps that's the point, as it does play into the movie's themes, but it doesn't make for a fully engaging experience. There's also a romance at the film's core that doesn't totally work for me. It's rushed and feels rather dated at times.

Still, when all's said and done, there's more to like here than dislike. It's tough not to get sucked in by the world created here. The visuals are simply spectacular. It doesn't look like the film came out 35 years ago. The characters may not be fully engaging, but the themes surrounding their predicaments are interesting. I pondered them long after the movie had ended. It stuck with me, and that's one of the best compliments I can give a film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For nowadays standards and understanding of robotics, cloning etc. it might not be that novel of an idea. But without a doubt, the imagery, the sound, the atmosphere is just a thing to behold. And I know it sounds cliché since everyone mentions it, but the last minutes of the surviving replicant is just masterfully played and hits right in the feels. A death scene for the ages. Expand

Roy was the most charismatic character in the entire movie. Everyone else was stiff and blockish. No one is going to win and award for acting in this beyond the Roy character (RIP RH). I watch it from time to time more out of curiosity comparing what was to what is now. I think the look of this 1982 movie has aged rather well. I don't even get that dated 80's feel. That fact that this movie is set in 1989 is kind of depressing. It is 2021 and no flying cars, space colonies or super synthetic people yet. It seems we need to catch up with this movie concepts for sure. :) Expand

This movie has surprisingly beautiful background. Nevertheless I don't want to appear that in real world. Like "Who is more humane?" question melted away in my mind. and I am feeling lingering imagery.

Scott proves his theory over and over again, reject it as much as you like, it evidently follows the laws of nature.

Blade Runner

Scott himself isn't sure about where to go with a material so rich as such. Reinventing, rebooting and reevaluating the world and the characters that it so repulsively possesses, the director, Ridley Scott, has come up with an ambiguous sombre ending or one even might say conclusion to one of the most controversially acclaimed sci-fi adventure. And yet watching this film multiple times, I have never felt it being adventurous nor dramatic. It surfs around the gray area of some profound documentation where the observer isn't who we think he or she is. And i think that is why the film ages so well.

Not, just the modernization of the world or how it presumes it to be, but in your memories, most of all. It is a film that haunts you and pursues you to think twice before jumping in on any decision. And that's the beauty of it, love it or hate it, something so engrossing as such will not leave you alone. The alluring picturization of both the polished porsche version of the society and the cheap ruffian materialistic world that is sick at its core, balances out the film evenly.

As far as characters are concerned, they are basically at war. Shooting at knowns and befriending the unknowns, the depth in their nature is colored by their neutrality towards the nature and its opposite, the post-apocalyptic world. Harrison Ford is a part of an audience for a huge chunk of time. Watch him calculate, fail, sacrifice and charge, and yet the best he does in the film above all, is share. His inexpressive nature ping-pongs back the other character's ideology and deeds with an illuminating reflection that casts an entire trajectory of theirs in a frame, maybe that is why he is entitled to be the Blade Runner.

Rutger Hauer was so badass there and his acting was remarkable, he was the only reason to watch this film till the end. I liked his quotes too, full of wisdom and beyond movie's era. Daryl Hannah was also very good as Pris. Harrison Ford... the same good role again and again. Good flick with nice acting and direction, but nothing special to say "wow". Expand

So, this is it - THE UNDISPUTED SCI-FI CLASSIC!

Well, that's really up to what you as the viewer prefer. Do you like scares and a creepy atmosphere? Go for Alien or Predator. Do you like high flying action and exhilarating chases? Then maybe Star Wars is better suited for you. Blade Runner is not a horror movie, nor is it particularly exciting (even if action was the genre Harrison Ford mostly worked in during the 80s). This is a creepy, dark and gritty science fiction tale set in a post-apocalyptic world not farm from Tim Burton's Gotham City. It has a slow, dreamy tone and its script focuses on long moments of contemplative silence. The incredible visual style still holds up today, and it's made even more iconic by Vangelis' electronic score.

The movie has real depth but the story isn't hard to follow. It's more of an manifest really, a bit like another great slow sci-fi, Arrival. And because this i not a thriller or an action movie, it requires a specific mindset to really be enjoyed. And even if you haven't got that mindset you can't but marvel at Ford's minimalist, flat but utterly brilliant performance. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Ford's greatest performance yet.

But its not a flawless movie, mind you. The story never really sets of properly and we barely even see the replicants Ford is chasing. A shame really, cause Rutger Hauer's replicant baddie is probably one of the greatest in all of cinema history. His acting can be compared with Arnie's, only creepier. Some of the quieter moments feel out of place in the story and barely bring anything else than more length to the story. The second act of the movie is the slowest, and weakest. After a promising start, impressively setting up the world and the story, the movie almost totally freezes before entering the memorably surreal third act.

All of the above being said, Blade Runner is a remarkably memorable and original piece of cinema. It's gritty, violent and disturbing. It's surreal, slow and contemplative. Its few actions scenes are stylish, its performances are top notch. It's a type of moving art that they just don't make anymore.

Blade Runner is the definitive cyberpunk movie.

Its effects hold up to this day. Its visuals with its use of neon lighting and beautiful shadows make it one of the most stunning sci-fi films to look at. The plot is simple, but engrossing. The romance could be better (and less assaulty), but the implications of the ending and the film's equally great sequel paint it in an interesting new, if still not official light.

Roy Batty is an amazing villain. His final speech will never not make me feel existentially depressed. Its themes of death are terrifying, but fascinating.

Oddly enough, the "zoom and enhance" scene is my favorite in the whole movie. Final Cut is the best cut.

It's great movie in almost every way. Beautiful.

No one can do atmospheric sci-fi like Ridley Scott as he proves with this moody & mesmorising piece of science fiction film noir.

As stunning and radical its atmosphere and visuals are, I didn't find the plot convincing at all. Great performance by Rutger Hauer though.

This film oozes atmosphere and character. The film has such a captivating mystery and subplots which keep the film from becoming tedious. and the swooping soundtrack by Vangelis combined with the neon futuristic visuals makes this a cult classic. It works well as a cyberpunk movie but also as a noir, and honestly what more could you want? Expand

Blade Runner's thrilling immersion and philosophical musings transcend the typical action film in a story that feels oddly poignant.

TheI don't even know where to begin with this film. There's so much to unpack here. Blade Runner is one of the most important landmarks in the history of science fiction media, and beyond that, one of the greatest films in movie history. The world has so much depth to it, and the vibrant colors make it feel much more alive than most depicted worlds in movies. The concept of the Replicants hiding from human society and the Blade Runners tracking them down and killing them is one that I personally find really intriguing. Like most of the characters Harrison Ford plays, Deckard is compelling, charming, and immediately gets you invested in the strange and unique world he lives in. There's several moments in the film that had my jaw hit the floor, but I won't spoil those here. One thing I will advise regarding this movie is which version to watch. There are three main versions of Blade Runner, the original version, the Director's Cut from 1982, and the Final Cut from 2007. The latter of which is easily the best version of the film since Ridley Scott had full control over the film. The original version of Blade Runner features horrendous narration from Harrison Ford as Deckard that basically ruins the films pacing and plot. But the Final Cut (and Director's Cut) removes the voice overs and solidifies the film as an undisputed masterpiece. Overall, a landmark film in science fiction and one of Ridley Scott's finest works. Expand
