TheI don't even know where to begin with this film. There's so much to unpack here. Blade Runner is one of the most important landmarks in the history of science fiction media, and beyond that, one of the greatest films in movie history. The world has so much depth to it, and the vibrant colors make it feel much more alive than most depicted worlds in movies. The concept of the Replicants hiding from human society and the Blade Runners tracking them down and killing them is one that I personally find really intriguing. Like most of the characters Harrison Ford plays, Deckard is compelling, charming, and immediately gets you invested in the strange and unique world he lives in. There's several moments in the film that had my jaw hit the floor, but I won't spoil those here. One thing I will advise regarding this movie is which version to watch. There are three main versions of Blade Runner, the original version, the Director's Cut from 1982, and the Final Cut from 2007. The latter of which is easily the best version of the film since Ridley Scott had full control over the film. The original version of Blade Runner features horrendous narration from Harrison Ford as Deckard that basically ruins the films pacing and plot. But the Final Cut (and Director's Cut) removes the voice overs and solidifies the film as an undisputed masterpiece. Overall, a landmark film in science fiction and one of Ridley Scott's finest works. Expand

For one thing, the visuals are superb. Not just in the special effects which are just mind-blowing but also in the cinematography, colours and sets. Another strong asset is the score, in fact Blade Runner is easily one of Vangelis's best by how mysterious and haunting it all is.

The story is just great. True, it is the sort of film you need to see more than once to understand/appreciate it, but that is not a flaw in any way, quite the contrary. The story is very compelling, and also very deep thematically. Blade Runner is further advantaged by memorable dialogue, superb direction by Scott and good pacing. I can understand why some are underwhelmed by the ending, I was at first, but the more I saw the film the more the ending made sense to me. Finally the performances. Harrison Ford is perfectly cast, and Sean Young supports him admirably, but the real star of the cast is Rutgar Hauer who is outstanding in his role.

In conclusion, a brilliant film and something Scott should be proud of. 10/10 Bethany Cox

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge Cowboy Bebop fan, it hit me about 1/3rd of the way in that this movie was potentially a huge inspiration for Cowboy Bebop. By 1/2 way through it was clear, and reading some interviews, it was confirmed. It turns out, not surprisingly, that it had a huge impact on sci-fi and anime in general. For that, it made it a fantastic watch

The film itself didn't jive tremendously with me. There were some moments that stood out, but above all, it was moreso the concept and pacing that were key. The "tears in the rain" scene with Roy on the roof was the highlight of the film for me. An AI being driven by fear of mortality was highly impactful for me. It retroactively painted their actions in a different light

Often times media that is inspired by originators of concepts build on those concepts and make them "better," and as a huge Cowboy Bebop fan, I feel that it accomplished this in a roundabout way. I feel that Cowboy Bebop took the building blocks, added its own flair, and expanded on the mood and pacing of Blade Runner. Obviously a different overall concept, but very clearly built off of the backbone of it. The similarities are probably what pulled me away from loving Blade Runner, but boy do I respect it.

Excellent movie, and I can see why it was highly impactful in the sci-fi genre.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Blade Runner is an outstanding movie in certain areas, but it's lacking in other areas. The visuals are simply outstanding; they succeed in capturing the dark and gritty feel of futuristic Los Angeles. The film's greatest weakness is its storytelling. While the proposition behind it is interesting (cop tries to take out dangerous human-like androids), the story feels quite mundane and soulless at times. As a result, the film drags on at times and leaves you wishing for it to end (though it does become more interesting later on). While Blade Runner isn't a bad movie, I'd recommend several other movies before this one. Expand

Roy was the most charismatic character in the entire movie. Everyone else was stiff and blockish. No one is going to win and award for acting in this beyond the Roy character (RIP RH). I watch it from time to time more out of curiosity comparing what was to what is now. I think the look of this 1982 movie has aged rather well. I don't even get that dated 80's feel. That fact that this movie is set in 1989 is kind of depressing. It is 2021 and no flying cars, space colonies or super synthetic people yet. As I suspect many others are doing I decided to re-watch Blade Runner in preparation for the sequel as it'd probably been at least ten years since I'd originally watched it.

In all honesty my opinion of the movie has changed very little in that time. It gets a lot right in terms of characters and storytelling and the futuristic depiction of LA, which must have looked spectacular back in the mid 80's, still stands up today.

The issue I continue to have with Blade Runner however is it's pacing. Yes, its nice to see a film take the time to explore it's themes (largely, what does it mean to be human) but a number of scenes drag on for much longer than necessary and almost slow things down to a halt at times. As a result, while I respect Blade Runner for what it sets out to achieve and its influence on the sci-fi genre I can't say it's amongst my favourite movies.

Blade Runner is the definitive cyberpunk movie.

Its effects hold up to this day. Its visuals with its use of neon lighting and beautiful shadows make it one of the most stunning sci-fi films to look at. The plot is simple, but engrossing. The romance could be better (and less assaulty), but the implications of the ending and the film's equally great sequel paint it in an interesting new, if still not official light.

Roy Batty is an amazing villain. His final speech will never not make me feel existentially depressed. Its themes of death are terrifying, but fascinating.

Oddly enough, the "zoom and enhance" scene is my favorite in the whole movie. Final Cut is the best cut.

It's great movie in almost every way. Beautiful.

Harrison Ford stars as the titular Blade runner tasked with 'retiring' a group of rogue androids determined to extend their limited 3 year lifespans. The 2007 final cut edit is superbly paced and pieced together sans the awful voice over narration that haunted the theatrical release. The screenplay is rich and weird, with many enigmatic characters played by the extremely talented cast. 1982's Blade runner holds up well today and has been well complimented with a tasteful sequel. I remember I first watched the directors cut on channel 4 back in the nineties and it blew my mind again and again requiring multiple watches for my young mind to appreciate the nuances this film encapsulates. Empty, slow, and pointless. The age of the film does not give it any bonus points since there is no substance that can be seen in films decades older.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It wasn't something really special, l wasn't impressed, it was incredibly well directed but the plot was boring. Rutger Hauer was so badass there and his acting was remarkable, he was the only reason to watch this film till the end. I liked his quotes too, full of wisdom and beyond movie's era. Daryl Hannah was also very good as Pris. Harrison Ford... the same good role again and again. Good flick with nice acting and direction, but nothing special to say "wow". Expand

So, this is it - THE UNDISPUTED SCI-FI CLASSIC!

Well, that's really up to what you as the viewer prefer. Do you like scares and a creepy atmosphere? Go for Alien or Predator. Do you like high flying action and exhilarating chases? Then maybe Star Wars is better suited for you. Blade Runner is not a horror movie, nor is it particularly exciting (even if action was the genre Harrison Ford mostly worked in during the 80s). This is a creepy, dark and gritty science fiction tale set in a post-apocalyptic world not farm from Tim Burton's Gotham City. It has a slow, dreamy tone and its script focuses on long moments of contemplative silence. The incredible visual style still holds up today, and it's made even more iconic by Vangelis' electronic score.

The movie has real depth but the story isn't hard to follow. It's more of an manifest really, a bit like another great slow sci-fi, Arrival. And because this i not a thriller or an action movie, it requires a specific mindset to really be enjoyed. And even if you haven't got that mindset you can't but marvel at Ford's minimalist, flat but utterly brilliant performance. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Ford's greatest performance yet.

But its not a flawless movie, mind you. The story never really sets of properly and we barely even see the replicants Ford is chasing. A shame really, cause Rutger Hauer's replicant baddie is probably one of the greatest in all of cinema history. His acting can be compared with Arnie's, only creepier. Some of the quieter moments feel out of place in the story and barely bring anything else than more length to the story. The second act of the movie is the slowest, and weakest. After a promising start, impressively setting up the world and the story, the movie almost totally freezes before entering the memorably surreal third act.

All of the above being said, Blade Runner is a remarkably memorable and original piece of cinema. It's gritty, violent and disturbing. It's surreal, slow and contemplative. Its few actions scenes are stylish, its performances are top notch. It's a type of moving art that they just don't make anymore.

Scott proves his theory over and over again, reject it as much as you like, it evidently follows the laws of nature.

Blade Runner

Scott himself isn't sure about where to go with a material so rich as such. Reinventing, rebooting and reevaluating the world and the characters that it so repulsively possesses, the director, Ridley Scott, has come up with an ambiguous sombre ending or one even might say conclusion to one of the most controversially acclaimed sci-fi adventure. And yet watching this film multiple times, I have never felt it being adventurous nor dramatic. It surfs around the gray area of some profound documentation where the observer isn't who we think he or she is. And i think that is why the film ages so well.

Not, just the modernization of the world or how it presumes it to be, but in your memories, most of all. It is a film that haunts you and pursues you to think twice before jumping in on any decision. And that's the beauty of it, love it or hate it, something so engrossing as such will not leave you alone. The alluring picturization of both the polished porsche version of the society and the cheap ruffian materialistic world that is sick at its core, balances out the film evenly.

As far as characters are concerned, they are basically at war. Shooting at knowns and befriending the unknowns, the depth in their nature is colored by their neutrality towards the nature and its opposite, the post-apocalyptic world. Harrison Ford is a part of an audience for a huge chunk of time. Watch him calculate, fail, sacrifice and charge, and yet the best he does in the film above all, is share. His inexpressive nature ping-pongs back the other character's ideology and deeds with an illuminating reflection that casts an entire trajectory of theirs in a frame, maybe that is why he is entitled to be the Blade Runner.

The ambiance of Vangelis' score and production design are just out of this world. Phenomenal work in every way. Directing by Ridley Scott is at his finest to date, the rainy atmosphere just feet perfectly to this story driven by agent Deckard wonderfully portrayed with a top notch Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer is coldest as possible as we even imagine this is really a replicant for some moments. All the visual effects are spectacular and still very effective as the today standard. The story is loosely based on the Philip K Dick novel but have is own approach that perfectly feet to Ridley Scott own vision of the story. Every sequences are unforgettable and the final is just perfect! Near to reach the prefect 10 rating. The Final Cut of the film have some sequences and color treatments altered so this deacrese the rate from 9 to 8 in my opinion. And then the theatrical version, the international version and the now official workprint version are all far from what the final versions are. Complete opposite of Star Wars original saga by the way. This is also probably the first serious cyberpunk movie ever made. An instant classic that absolutely deserve to be seen. Expand

When some of these replicants escape from the place where they were forced to work and end up in Los Angeles, looking for to meet their creator and prolongate their lifetime. A cop, the Blade Runner, gotta hunt and "retire" the replicants group. Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples.
This film is a gamechanger, not just for the sci-fi, but for movies in general and in multiple ways, be in visual, in philosophy, style, you can se a lot of movies that use the aspects created in this film in other future classics after this.
The story can be very confusing and boring for some people, because of it's slowness, but i found that great, the dialogues in this movie are all very deep and smart, the narrative of this movie together with it's atmosphere puts you completely inside of the movie, the darkened Los Angeles, with the smoke everywhere, with different kind of people, all helps to put you inside of the movie, with it's strong colors, a very noir and investigative story that is very well set.
The world building in this is magnificent, a world build in 1.982 for a futuristic science fiction, using no cgi technologies, all practical effects where we can't see things dated, things are still visually relevant in now days and also one of the best futuristic universe made, using models, creating real things, it all make the movie not get ugly with time, not using bad cgi, i found all that really pretty and well made. The visual in the world, laden in neon and cyberpunk characteristics, so those lights together with the dark things, a world where is always night, it got really pretty and depressive visual, wich is perfect for what the movie is telling.
The philosophy situation in here, is giant, and we could list some film that surely got influenciated by this in it, wich would be Ghost in the Shell or Matrix for example. The discussion of the replicants and humans are fabulous, if someone develop emotions, and those emotions are exactly like the regular human ones, what could differ than from humans, what would make them less humans than us? The fact is their fights is totally relatable to stories in our society, people that got created just for one specific reason, and are enslaved to do that, created to have no emotions, and live a really few time, can't we relate that to our routine? Another big thing that i found really fantastic in here, is that the reason that the replicants are getting hunted by Deckard, is because they are considering dangerous and not humans by the people, the fun fact is that at the end of the day they got to be more humans than actual humans, the end of the movie is such of a masterpiece because of that, you got a "human" trying to "retire" a "monster" and suddenly such monster becomes more human than the human, that was a thing to think about, what are we doing with our lives, we actually living or just pretending. A memory in our mind is just a flash of something that have happened, a implanted memory is much different from that?
Another fantastic thing about this universe, is that what we are seeing is just a really small part of it, all the time they are talking about the giantic universe that happens around there, making it clear that Earth is just the scum of what exist, making it clear that who lives in this planet is only there because couldn't afford to live or didn't passed the texts to go out, so knowing that is a giant and rich universe is already a very interesting thing.
The soundtrack for this movie is, in my opinion, the best soundtrack ever made, what Vangelis did in here was unbelievable, i think that this song is probably the most imersive ever made, it talks so much with what is going on in the movie, it is a song that you can feel the waves getting inside of you and running in the veins, it is so much of a masterpiece.
Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty is the best character in the movie, by far, his acting is so on point, he is angry and agitated, but at the same time a very leader person, he does have some lines in this movie that are perfect, and in the way that he speaks it, just made everything better and created one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history, so as making us questioning who is the actual villain in this film. Sean Young as Rachael is also very perfect, she was in her voice very innocent, with a lot of doubts and discoveries, a very important character, love between a replicant and a human. Harrison Ford in some moments felt kind of disinterested, but maybe that is his character, and overall he wins it with his expressions. Daryl Hannah as Pris was really nice, her character was very interesting and i think that she could have been more explorated in this story. Joanna Cassidy and Brion James wasn't very explored, but they definely worked out very well.

I admire the film deeply forBlade Runner (The Final Cut) is a great movie. It's a quintessential piece of science fiction filmmaking that explores interesting themes and builds a completely believable world for its characters to inhabit. I admire the film deeply for taking its time. Lingering shots, accompanied by Vangelis' hauntingly beautiful score, create a rich atmosphere for the audience to bathe in. The story is fairly straightforward, but its implications run deeper.

That said, it isn't perfect. Not like some people say it is. Even the best cut of Blade Runner has moments that drag on, and if I'm being honest, I didn't feel invested in many of the characters. Rutger Hauer is a standout in the mostly serviceable cast, bringing charm and swagger to his synthetic character. Ironically, most of the flesh and blood characters feel rather robotic. Perhaps that's the point, as it does play into the movie's themes, but it doesn't make for a fully engaging experience. There's also a romance at the film's core that doesn't totally work for me. It's rushed and feels rather dated at times.

Still, when all's said and done, there's more to like here than dislike. It's tough not to get sucked in by the world created here. The visuals are simply spectacular. It doesn't look like the film came out 35 years ago. The characters may not be fully engaging, but the themes surrounding their predicaments are interesting. I pondered them long after the movie had ended. It stuck with me, and that's one of the best compliments I can give a film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this dark and gloomy look of this futuristic slum-like Los Angeles in 2019. It perfectly supports the bizarre atmosphere of the lightly philosophic and dramatic story of blade runner. The Cast also does a very good job, especially Harrison Ford (Rick Deckard), Sean Young (Rachael) and Rutger Hauer (Roy Batty) are excellent in this movie and their characters are most important to represent the problem of androids that are a bit too human. I think the strong points of blade runner are definitely the long (based on how long you see it on the display) and distant shots in calm, emotional situations (maybe compared to more modern productions a bit too long) and the much faster cuts in action sequences; the effects that were very well for the conditions of 1982 and are even compared to today's movies not bad; the music, a mix of classic tunes and synthie-sounds and the well-acted characters. For me a weakness of 'Blade Runner' is that sometimes for example when someone dies it's often way too dramatic presented. But all in all Blade Runner is a very good and dramatic Science-Fiction movie that has a very interesting philosophical approach and deals with questions like 'what is life?' or 'how much are humans rulers over other individuals?' and 'cause of that breaks the frame of classic sci-fi movies. I was like 6 when this came out and didn't watch it back then and for some reason never got around to watching it until recently. I've been told numerous times this was a classic, one of the best of the genre. Well wait, I did watch it like 10 years ago after a friend told me it was his favorite movie of all times and I honestly don't remember any of it, other than I felt it was pretty boring. So a couple months ago I watched it and fell asleep on it... and now I finally got around to watching it fully, well rested and with no expectations.

I just feel the jell-o doesn't take hold... It seems like the whole plot is very shallow and uneventful. Throughout the movie, you don't quite get what the runaway replicants want exactly and by the time you do, they pretty much learn they can't do anything about it... Then it just becomes a succession of extremely cheesy action scenes (the whole JF Sebastian apartment ending, geez man, give me a break).

Overall, it was a pretty excruciating experience to watch. Granted, it was ahead of it's time and there was a lot of originality, but story-wise, it was in my opinion terrible. I hope Denis Villeneuve's upcoming follow up mops the floor with this, won't be hard IMHO.

The difference between the theatrical and director's cuts is huge. I'd recommend watching the former before the latter to fully appreciate the difference. Practically every sci-fi film since has tried to copy Blade runner. So you might get some deja vu watching Blade runner, but remember, it came first. Expand

Ridley Scott returns to SciFi once again after his "Alien" film. This one didn't turn out as good in my opinion, for several reasons. Though there are many things that makes this film a classic still. The philosphical themes, the visuals, the worldbuilding, the music by Vangelis, the tone, the mystery and so on... Highly influential movie which mostly stood its test of time. It was not a succefull movie when it premiered back in the 80's and it undertook production hell aswell. Many people learned to apriciate in time a vhs releases and later through the "dirctors cut" and "final cut" dvd releases. I would recommend checkin out the "Final Cut" version. Expand
