Feels like a true passion project and not a manufactured blockbuster. Full of heart and soul, extremely enjoyable extremely well done. A must watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never went into this movie thinking it was going to be good. I was surprised. It's actually somewhat hard to remember at this point what my expectations were of this film. It was a sequel of sorts to a pretty disheartening antihero film from the DC Universe, one that's been done better by the likes of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker. Suicide Squad was supposed to be what Venom was supposed to be, these edgy rated R movies that took off the kid gloves and let us root for the baddies a little, built a team of villains up for us over the course of a few movies so that they could interact with our heroes in more interesting ways with a longer emotional runway. Instead, Suicide Squad was hard to watch and generally soulless aside from the excellent character work of Margot Robbie. It was right and proper that she should receive a spin off of her own, and Gail Simone's work along with Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti's zany take on Harley and Chad Hardlin's whimsical art style have made for some excellent source material to draw from. Birds of Prey is an above average break up movie and an excellent superhero story that really did find a way to maintain its feminist credentials without having to sacrifice fan service in many respects. It found a way to cannily navigate its way between the expectations of a young male audience who came to see a group of misfit criminals with a lot of sex appeal and the core of fans who've been waiting to see an all-women line-up from literally any production house since forever. Robbie's Harley is the ditzy femme fatale of Suicide Squad, but her look and her outlook are updated. She spends less time licking the ends of bats and doing contortions in a stripper cage and a lot more time exacting vengeance on gross people like the owner of the exotic petshop who demands "payment in kind" or befriending hapless pickpockets out of jail. Her arc is believable because the movie gives her time to grieve for the death of her abusive relationship, the cartoon portrait of Mr. J in her apartment that she throws knives at (who, significantly, her younger ward does not even recognize) or the party where she meets a cute mannequin, a cute guy who ends up being a creep, and a future guardian angel. Friend says one of the wise things the director did was not try to make her sympathetic for too much of the movie: yes, she's cutesy, but HQ sells out the pickpocket when things get hard, she's too drunk to fight off her captors after a night out at the bar, she bowls over an innocent store clerk for very little reason with her shopping cart. She's a pretty big jerk, which makes her decision to defend the pickpocket toward the end all the more meaningful, because it almost-but-not-quite feels like a turning point....

Narratively, the movie is one tightly wound skein. It doesn't quite make it to "multiple temporalities" (think Dunkirk or Inception), as one Friend said he was being led to believe, but it does jump around in some odd ways, laterally to other characters just outside of the frame, rather than to conventional flashbacks. The effect is one in which the story feels like its filling up with more and more information and stakes the longer we go. It's an unnecessary structural alteration, but welcome, like lace. The lack of linear storytelling is one of my favorite things about experiencing this movie for the first time. Doc's character is the one truly evil character in the whole movie and he never gets his comeuppance. It's so distracting that it's still a little unnerving right now to talk about. There is only one scene that is clearly **** insane makes no sense how did this make it in and it's toward the tail end of Harley and her runaway hiding out at her apartment. There's a knock on the door from the stairs staying "Open Up, It's the Police," so the two of them run to the window to escape, only to find a thug launching a fireball of fireworks into her apartment through the window. At which point her hyena goes missing instantly (to be found later completely safe though its set up as a kind of winter sequence in the same vein as the massacred sandwich). Then they... go down the stairs they just were avoiding because of the police (remember?) only there's no one there. There's no one in the shop at all. And no one waiting for Harley anymore, in fact, except Doc is packing his things because he's just been bribed (either by Huntress or the crime syndicate that Obi Won controls) to leave town after tipping them off to her home address. He leaves and then she's on the run. How was he paid? Why does she let him leave without further confrontation? Don't they have a history together?

Also, while we're on the topic of shared history, why don't Black Canary and the pickpocket have more conversations about how they're NEIGHBORS? Those issues are not enough to detract from how fun this movie is. I cannot recommend seeing BoP highly enough.

Incredible stunts, editing, filmography, fight scenes, acting & just super fun!!! Super talented female director, writer & of course cast!!! Walked out smiling. For S.F critic, if the cast was all men, Mick (0 LaSalle) would have given it a 10. Expand

Deadpool meets Scott Pilgrim in the most glorious way.

One thing you can guarantee about superhero movies is that they often convey in their style, the tone of their main characters. And in this case that's a whole lot!

Firstly the entire film hinges on Margot Robbie and there are moments in this film where I am suddenly reminded: Oh yeah, this is the actress that played Tonya Harding in I, Tonya! I forget how incredible she is until Harley is suddenly draped in humanity and Robbie activates her acting glands. In this film you can see her pain and her humanity and her strife and I was truthfully moved by that because it's made tangible and relatable inbetween all the funsies. But she's also so lively and likeable and she infuses Harley (appropriately) with the spirit of a live-action cartoon.

Little stings of humanity reinforce Harley as a lived-on character; too often we see comic characters as untouchable, unknowable statues, they seldom pick up groceries, or live in dumps, or get smashed and cause trouble because they're unhappy. The script normalises Harley in an interesting way.

These props go to the script which manages to feel like a solid superhero movie and a sort of cop film while also linking all the characters together in a cat's cradle of interweaving. But the real star is Cathy Yan who is a really accomplished director here; the film is often beautiful and balanced between comic booky and grounded, but she just manages to capture these women so well, we look upon them with a kind of fresh look; they're powerful and sexy but not viewed through male gaze, they're fun and rich.

And I was thinking during the (solidly satisfying action) that I've never seen such a creative use of roller skates in action before, and that stems mostly from male dominated action protagonists, and I was grateful for something so exciting and unique. The hair tie moment and many others were a simple breath of fresh air. I’m also sick of the macho samey nonsense in films and the sexism. Further to this I enjoyed the respect given to Harley Quinn's lore; Her Psychiatrist background is referenced plenty, but also her madness is explored by her talking to camera and also a voice-over that infers she’s talking to herself. Also, that comment about what crazy actually was, was a cute, grounding commentary and a get out of jail free card to the film approaching the idea of her craziness. Black Mask was terrible and nonsensical and not at all the imposing monster he was in the comics, however, Roman Sionis as a character was very compelling; a rich, entitled, greedy, spoilt Trump-figure who saw Gotham and its inhabitants as his toys; roaming around showing off his masks and patronising and mansplaining his way around his spoils. As a generic mob boss (and his unexplained penchant for removing faces) failed, where his moments of unmasked, unbridled showings of sexual power and dominance was breathtakingly disgusting and effective and I was glad (for some reason) that a woman wrote it and a woman directed it. Zasz was also a welcome surprise, a good actor, fuelling Sionis, and with a rich arc for a henchman. The sets were bad and some of the locations suffered from too much dark blue and atmospheric fog, and the actual Birds of Prey were scant together; relegated largely just to a third act fight.

I'm sure this film will be rated less once the novelty of it wears of, but the experience I had was fantastic watching it. And hand on heart, I could definitely stand to see another one, one with the gang all together, and I didn't miss Batman or the Joker one bit.

This is exceptionally poor quality for 100 years of film. It feels like Margot Robbie took the character a bit too far from who she is. If you're a fan of Harley in the comics(though she was created on Batman Animated Series) and like her in Suicide Squad - don't watch this. I can deal with feminism, (even the heavy stuff) after all it was men who created this character and men who appreciate her just like Wonder Woman. The problem lies in what seems to be Margot Robbie's ,"vision," for a female archtype anti-hero. This is just not the character to do it with. As we all know, Harley doesn't set out to be the ,"bad girl taking on bad guys." She becomes an excellent hero without the help of Suicide Squad, or reflection on the Joker. A true hero, and dare I say one of the greatest of all time. This film makes it about Harley having more than a series of moments where as an ordinary woman she was abused, rejected, and oppressed just because. It makes no sense, and the flashbacks should have been cut completely. The female heroes of this film are displayed counter to their origin and their comic literature. This is nothing more than a Novella or a Lifetime movie. I expect much better from Margot Robbie given her stellar performances so far and I respect her acting chops. The production in this film is so low bar, it feels like a high school musical with dirty closeups and unusual sexual exploitation followed up as ,"I shot you," and ,"no I shot you first," by children with a kung fu fetish. As a man, I generally enjoy a fantasy utilizing my favorite female leads with wild female characters. This gave me uncomfortable feelings for how Margot Robbie picks and chooses when to be sexy or when to project feminine superiority. Given a society with multiple genders being recognized, where was the inclusivity as well? There's some gay representation but no trans, queer, or queer racial. From a right wing standpoint, this movie is offensive. From a left wing standpoint, this movie is difficult to watch, boring, misogynistic and exploitative given the #metoo and makes no attempt to rectify those shortcomings. If I was a woman and watched this, I would be offended. This is not just cringe despite what others have said. I've seen far worse. But this is a terrible way to turn the lights off. What is this film about? Broken white girl rescue operation? I even liked Suicide Squad and was excited to see a Harley film. This is not what I was hoping for from such a beloved example of perseverance. A beloved character that men celebrate just as much as Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman has only recently become a feminist(for some as most women disagree with her character) project and has always been coveted by men as a true hero. To see yet another DC character just misused and given away to an actor without oversight is a pity. I feel the cast leaned too hard on the idea of being badass chicks instead of badass heroes with a soul and a purpose. Redemption. This is just an awful film. Truly awful. Expand

First, as a Chinese, I felt offended when I heard character speaking Chinese in this stupid movie.Secondly this is probably the first movie that made me physically sick. OK I know feminism is the best money vacuum now. But this is the direcotor's understandig of feminism? Being independent because I got dumped??? What the **** is wrong with you dear director? And for IDK reason this is a super hero movie that directed by "first asian female director", but it dosen't mean its great. Its horrible, I want to spoon my ****ing eyeballs out then step on them. It causes me both mentally and physical pain. PLZ dont waste your time watching this. You can watch sun goes up and down for a day from horizon to horizon will be a better way to kill time. At least after doing this, you will appreciate life more. And I also dont recommend this as a date night movie, cause after watching this I am 100% positive you will have either a huge fight or a semi. This director twisted feminism, independence to vacuum money for its own benefit. I hope this director never got hired again to film anything anymore. And I also beg everyone to destroy all physical copies of this movie. If COVID-19 wiped out humanity, at least we can do something for the next generation from being metally and physically damaged by this movie. Expand

Birds of Prey is a Harley Quinn movie whose every attribute is just as sloppily scrambled as the mind of Harley Quinn.
Along the same Harley-esque lines, despite all odds this film accidentally succeeds in some small ways. This script is a mess of time jumps and irritating/unreliable narration from one Harley Quinn. It fails to invest you in Harley or any of its characters before throwing them into action set piece after action set piece, as is the typical failing of nearly any bad comic book movie. Sometimes, the pacing of such films partially save them from this lack of attachment. Unfortunately Harley Quinns's pacing is grinded to a halt and even rewinded once or twice by its time jumps. The film attempts to excuse this nonsensical mess it makes as a result of scatter-brained Harley narrating the story. Although tying the structure of a film to an unreliable narrator's mental instability is a concept I like in theory (and have liked in films like Memento and Synechdoche, New York), the characters in Birds of Prey lack the substance to pull it off. Quick-fire complaints time. The action was creative but marred by slowmo and fastmo. A pop-filled soundtrack cannot replace the identity a composed score brings to a film. Ewan McGregor's hilarious performance was marred by a needless pervy, Joffrey wannabe scene. The costume designer spent so much time making Harley's costumes flawless that every other character's costumes suffered. Birds of Prey shows a lot of promise for what could have been. It is definitely a step up from Suicide Squad, but not a big one. It's doing well in the box office so we may get another one. Hopefully the next iteration has better direction. Costuming is not something I usually mention in my reviews. This film warrants it. The costume designers seem to have spent so much time focusing on Harley that they nearly forgot about every other character. Why was Huntress wearing a wonky chain across her body? I can tell you it's not from the comics. Why was Detective Montoya wearing a t-shirt that said "I shaved my balls for this" for half the film? For one lame joke from the captain? Why does Black Mask's mask look so cheap? There are character excuses for all of these things. Huntress is trying to be an edgelord. Montoya is a drunk. Black Mask is a super-villain wannabe. These excuses unfortunately don't make these costumes look any less bad.

The film is incredible, it has a very good script, an excellent cast and wonderful characters, and a (if not the best) DCEU villain is in this feature! Give Birds of Prey a chance and if possible go and see your own conclusions about the film, but here among us, I believe that most of the majority will like this film a lot!

It is by far the worst written film of the DCEU, Yes even above Suicide Squad. Nearly every new character introduced did not need to be in this film, They tried to introduced too much and for no good reason.

The Huntress had absolutely no relevance to the plot. Montoya is just a generic cop character that was totally unnecessary. Zsasz was totally miscast and was by far the worst character in the movie. Black Canary had potential but was poorly utilized.

Birds of Prey is a perfect example of not just a terribly written movie but an example of a production that clearly had no idea wtf it was doing.

It is riddled with inconsistancies like magicaly appearing props and dissapearing characters/conflicts. Worse, it commits a cardinal sin by making its characters, who inhabit a fictional universe, mouthpieces for modern real world agendas. It makes the characters into jarringly inconsistent crazy quilts - not in a good-crazy (joker) way but in a really poorly crafted (suicide squad) way. It forces Harley through a spaghetti press; shes a mass murdering psychopath but also a role model of the feminine independant from men. So she can kiIl some people with impunity but cant cross certain lines. She completely spares a police station by using non lethal force but switches back to bone breaking and murder on bikers. This could be cool if the charactrer was outlined and reinforced by this behavior but no good reason for it is given- which clarifies that the choices are being made for reasons outside the storyline and universe (for us, the viewers). Its not subtle. It even literally says the name of a real world politician she voted for. Harley Quinn (a mass murderer who abducts girls) votes for Bernie. Solid endorsement. You morons. To be clear: a good movie could be written about this character. . . This is just not it. Heres some better themes: stockholm syndrom, domestic violence, co dependency issues, Girl Boss Issues, dealing with physical inferiority, and the consumate fear in a super hero world - and evening the odds... All good feminist issues, all related to the character and consistent with the universe. . Expand

Though a superior sequel to Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey at times tries too hard to be funny and innovative. The actual team only gets together in the last twenty minutes of the film, which leaves for a lot of build up with not a lot of payoff.

Fun, violent with a snappy script and the cast all having one hell of a good time. If you want something a bit lighter after awards season then join Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey on a fantabulous crime filled ride.

Harley and the Joker have broken up (yes that does mean Jared Leto will not be anywhere in sight, relax). After an unlikely series of events Harley Quinn teams up with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to rescue a young girl, Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from an evil crime lord. Enter Ewan McGregor as evil crime lord Roman Sionis and his trusty henchman/personal serial killer Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). Did you get all that? One of Suicide Squad's only redeeming qualities was Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She was the only character with any real development, not only likable but you can sympathize with her even when she's doing all kinds of mad things. Birds of Prey expands on this further only this time you've got more female characters kicking ass and not just parading around in a pair of hot pants.

The stunts are straight out of a comic book or a video game, this is far from your serious, grounded in reality comic book movie. But it's over the top without introducing anything overly far-fetched like witches or a badly CGI half man half crocodile. The action and stunts are ludicrous, particularly anything happening in the third act but hopefully you'll be too busy having a good time to notice. And if that wasn't enough, Birds of Prey also has a hyena and Ewan McGregor doing a full on 60's Batman villain performance. Seriously all that was missing was the "POW" "SNAP" "BAM" colourful bubbles whenever he's onscreen throwing a hissy fit or attempting to be menacing. It's totally bonkers from start to finish. If you enjoy comic book movies at all then be sure to check out Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

There ARE actually episodes in for example:"Batman the animated series" where Harley Quinn runs away from the Joker and does solo stuff or teams up with Poision Ivy. THESE are actually verry enjoyable and Harley is badass in these episodes but not because shes forced to, not like in this dumpsterfire. Everybody that knows the Lore about Harley Quinn knows that shes NOT a toxic, vomiting **** that wears the biggest trash she could find (also talking about red-blue hair) and starts beef with everyone that crosses her path and thinks that sehs the greatest person ever and no one can harm her. After all she has a P.h.D. You could litterly just needed to copy/paste a good comic episode of her. Whatever kinda message Cathy Yan wanted to spread with this movie; Woman are "badass" or "respectable" is definitly NOT IT! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came into the movie having low expectations. I didn't like Suicide Squad and I feel like most of the DCU movies are meh at best(w/ a couple exceptions) but I left the theater pleasantly surprised! I wouldn't say that this is the best DC movie I've seen but honestly, it was a lot of good fun. I found myself laughing at alot of the funny parts- a few jokes fell flat but most were good, the action had me at the edge of my seat or cringing. I'm not a fan of seeing bones break so that made me a little uncomfortable but honestly, it wasn't a bad thing. Pros- The story was just a fun rollercoaster ride with a good amount of action, good amount of laughs, a few heart felt moments, and Margo's Harley impression was really good. Like it made me think of the 90's Batman TAS Harley Quinn voice. it was a little off but I loved hearing her do it either way!

There was alot of subtle nods to the comic books that I loved. Also I saw this with a friend that isn't a huge comic book fan but they totally got it. They never felt lost or felt like they had to ask me questions in order to be filled in on what's what or whose who. Alot of nerds will rage about this but ppl need to remember that this movie was made for the masses & the fact that the general audience can watch this w/o feeling lost is a GOOD THING.

There were a couple issues that i had with the movie but honestly, they were minor. Character development felt a little short bc the cast was a decent size but it felt like by the end of the movie, I didn't know much about the background of a few of the main characters. I knew about their comic book counter parts and I know that the movie can't spent hours developing the characters but the underdevelopment made me care lil less about them? Killing off the bad guy- This is an issue that I have w/ every super hero movie (http://nrdy.co/marvel-dc-comics-villains/). They kill off the bad guys so there's no chance of them coming back unlike comic books where the fact that they keep coming back is what keeps the stories going. I didn't mind Zsasz dying b/c i kinda forget he's a thing at times but Black Mask seems like a bigger villain to just kill off.

Over all I dont understand the hate boner ppl have for this movie. This is definitely a better movie than most of the DCU movies, it was fun, exciting, funny, and truly enjoyable. Is it the best DCU movie? Naw (WW has that tbh) but is it a good DCU movie? Yes! Would i recommend my friends to watch it? Yes

Meet the Birds of Prey as introduced by the fantabulous Harley Quinn. Yes, that irrepressible, wild card and former paramour of the Joker is emancipated from the Suicide Squad and shepherding us through the origin story of that lady gang, featuring Renee Montoya, Black Canary and The Huntress. Margot Robbie reprises effervescent and sly portrayal of Harley. Here, she dominates. I don’t know what Birds of Prey would be without her.

Like most origin stories, Birds of Prey starts each character off in their own contained silo until they all come together in order to service the plot. As comic book movies go, this plot is not important. A bad guy wants a thing that will give him money to dominate the city. The “good” guys, or in this case the better girls, want to stop him because he’s a jerk trying to harm an innocent kid. Yada yada yada! Crash, bang, boom! The movie ends. Let’s be honest, you’re not going to see this movie because you want to be surprised by what happens.

Cathy Yan’s direction of the film can barely contain all of the energy Robbie brings to Harley Quinn, which makes the titular, Birds of Prey, take a bit of a backseat, and the screenplay by Christina Hodson is a little all over the place. I actually wish it had been funnier. There are funny quips here and there, but overall I wasn’t LOLing as much as I had hoped. There’s so much going on throughout the film. There are cartoon vignettes, explosions, and a lot of kicking butt. Also, Ewan McGregor, playing Roman Sionis, this movie’s mustache-twisting villain, and Chris Messina, the sinister henchman, are so outsized in their performances that they make more of an impact that the Birds of Prey as well – although McGregor, in particular, should have been reined in a bit. In fact, I wish there had been more to The Huntress. She just recedes in the background while both Renee Montoya, played by Rosie Perez, and Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, get good moments and hold their own against the otherwise dominating Harley Quinn.

Nevertheless, there is a lot to like aside from just Margot Robbie. The film’s runtime is manageable and not bloated like some other comic book movies – I’m looking at you, Marvel Universe. In general, the movie moves at a good clip, not really wasting time. The fight scenes have a lot of pizzazz to them, which is interesting considering how dark films set in Gotham can be. Also, there are some really good and interesting music choices sprinkled throughout.

Birds of Prey is worth the price of a ticket in the theater. It was a fun night at the cinema. Sure, the plot isn’t important but you’re really just there to see Harley Quinn wreak havoc. And, havoc she wreaks!

I think we completely agree on this one. DC Comics has provided one of their more entertaining films with Birds of Prey. When the dust clears, DC has provided the theaters their female Deadpool-like protagonist. I do wish the movie were a bit funnier and the villain a bit more essential to the story but I’ll suffice with great fight scenes instead. This movie definitely is a good watch on the big screen but save yourself a few bucks with a matinee showing.

Suicide squad and Ghostbusters 2016 had a baby, and it’s the ugliest and cheapest looking 100 million dollar movie you have ever seen. Come to find out that some of the scenes and action where shot so poorly they had to spend ridiculous money to fix this abortion of a movie. Even got the guy from John Wick to help fix some scenes. Honestly,it says a lot about the the director, who had never taken on a big project before, and it shows. Even a simpleton like me could see what she was going for. ( even though she failed big time)
Tryin to be Guy Richie, making a female deadpool movie. Prob would’ve been better if you jus directed it with your own style instead of copy and pasting everything we’ve seen a billion times.
The writer of this movie is good. Loved some of the work she’s done ( bumblebee) but this is a terrible story with so many plot holes, you can tell she has no connection to the source material or any knowledge of who Harley Quinn is or what makes fans love her so much, what a waste.

Last but not least Margot Robbie is an amazing actress.having said that she must love the smell of her own farts because she takes up 99% of the screen time. It got joker the Oscar maybe it will work for me (eye roll).

Please don’t waste your time with this garbage and tell Hollywood that we are not as dumb as you think we are. Negative STARS!!!!!

absolutely horrible and boring movie, cringe scenes and a waste of time.
I had a lot higher expectations for this movie, and none of my expectations were fulfilled

Now it's not only because of the disastrous adaptation that it was, it's a horrible film with a disastrous and badly edited script, except for Margot Robbie's performance there is nothing that can be rescued from this film...
The best thing to do is to pretend it never existed

A Harley Quinn movie should’ve been a home run but it absolutely struck out. Margot Robbie would make a great Harley Quinn but she’s being held back by awful writers (Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey or whatever they call this trash now?). Spent so much screen time doing female empowerment and lots and lots of screen time trashing men. That the was no time to tell a good story or build up likeable characters. I’m absolutely gutted Expand

Everything is the terrible, minus the action that is just okay.

Let it be known that Margot Robbie is a good actress, her performance is pretty much always a win. But, this movie is just awful

This movie is the best of DCEU. The action scenes are amazing... The eccentric comedy of Harley Quinn is the most fun. Black Canary gave me goosebumps in that murderous voice. I just say WOW!!!

Well done DC movie. Better than CGI filled Captain Marvel & Black Panther. Ewan McGregor really steals the show.
