It all begins with a unique concept to the main antagonist; Ra's al Ghul, and what his motivations are. This pushes our main hero; Bruce Wayne to the greater good. It’s a story that focus big on positivity, humanity and the overall purpose of society -- this deeply made the whole plot a lot more unique than one expected to experience. It’s a surreal popcorn-event of realistic action with a pacing that really delivers a thrilling third act. A lot of credit to C Nolan is indeed needed -- even though the film would have surpassed expectations even more if the characters would have had more development and inner struggles to them, less expositions and some lesser cheesy moments. But its way of really have a thrilling story, a surreal and closely developed character and a score that redefines the meaning of epicness -- is something not often seen on screen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was the movie Christopher Nolan got recognized. The beginning and setup to Batman is done unbelievably well, taking it's time and preparing the character. But it has it's share of flaws. Such as the second half really falls back and just isn't as good as the beginning. Or during the action scenes, the shaky cam prevents us from seeing the action. Overall a good enjoyable watch and a new approach to the character. Expand

Something about it just didn't grab me and make me feel excited. Maybe it's because Nolan focused more on the plot than on the action or something? I don't know, but either way, I'd be lying if I said that "Batman Begin" was a bad film, because it's far from it. It's well-written, it captures what Batman should be, it's wonderfully-acted, and it's well-directed by Nolan. Don't let my "like, not love" mentality put you off, "Batman Begins" is quite good, and I would definitely say it's worth watching. Expand

With many unsuccessful adaptions of this comic book hero, Christopher Nolan takes the cape crusader played by Christian Bale under his wing and transforms him to life.

Christopher Nolan's dark interpretation of Batman is stunning, although it would shine more in later years. This is the origins story so you have all of the early Bruce Wayne things which, in my opinion, are the only things that DON'T work with the dark mood. Once that's done is when you get the true Batman in a new style that is pure awesome. I do feel they could have used better villains (Ra Ja'Ghoul and Scarecrow, really?), but this was his first go and it's an amazing attempt. Acting's stunning and it's visually amazing. It doesn't disappoint. You don't need to watch this movie before others in the series, but I think you should. It holds up. Expand

Batman Begins is a film that was supposed to reboot the Batman franchise after the awful 1997 movie Batman and Robin. Batman Begins shows how Bruce Wayne, the owner of Wayne Enterprises becomes Batman. The story has a darker tone to it, which I like because I am a huge sucker for dark stories in anything. The acting was top notch for all characters, the action scenes were awesome, and the directing was clearly the best seeing how great the movie was. Normally, I would be skeptical about reboots, seeing as they could go either way, but Christopher Nolan did an outstanding job with this movie. It's too bad the video game did not do any justice for the movie, as I think it is why some people do not like the movie. Expand

Not that it's bad, it's just not as good as most people say it is. My biggest problem? The fact that the characters analyze EVERY SINGLE THING THAT HAPPENS. Don't get me wrong, what they have to say is interesting. But it's clearly the director speaking through the characters, not the characters speaking for themselves. As a result, the characters often get lost in Nolan's overly reverential script and pervasive darkness. That said, I still enjoy it. The action is good (even if the shaky-cam is distracting), the story itself is clever, and all the actors do their best with what they've been given. Standouts include Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman. If the movie just allowed its themes to develop naturally, rather than shoving it in our faces, it could have been incredible. As is, it's just good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batman Begins is a great origin story film for the Dark Knight and it is very strong in it's sense of darkness and emotion. It has some enjoyable action and themes that make this a grand adventure that I think that both Batman and Non-Batman fans can enjoy. The only downside I would probably have to say about this film is that it may not focus a ton on Batman antagonists unlike other Batman films which is a bit of a pity because as we all should know, villains in the Batman universe are great characters we love to hate, but luckily Ra's al Ghul is still cool along with the Scarecrow and these minor problems don't appear in the sequels. One other thing about this film is that it will seem a little slow in the beginning half of the film, but the ending is enjoyable. Batman Begins is an overall great superhero film, I'd recommend it. The first Act is magnificent. I loved watching Bruce travel to the corners of the world to understand the criminal mind, I loved the training sequences where Ra's Al Ghul taught Bruce that he mustn't bury his fears, he must confront them. And the relationship they developed between Bruce and Alfred is heartwarming. My biggest issue with the film is its 3rd Act which was literally jam packed with action. That was the only part of the film I found boring. It's clear that Nolan wanted to utilise the 3rd Act to sell the movie and fair enough but it really seemed as though the film dropped its ideas for the sake of action. There are just too many supporting characters and the film can't develop them all properly. Scarecrow was a pretty pointless villain who could have easily been written off without affecting the plot. And perhaps the most annoying part of the film is Rachel. Because firstly Katie Holmes gives a terrible performance as Rachel Dawes and secondly the character is not written well. The relationship between Bruce and Rachel had little to no chemistry. And for the record I liked the action scenes in Batman Begins (and Dark Knight). Yes it's hard to know what's going on but in Nolan's films it's not clarity and precision that's ever emphasised, it's the movement and the rhythm that makes the editing effective. It blend in very well with Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score. So all-in-all Batman Begins is a very impressive film with a somewhat underwhelming 3rd Act. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An epic and gritty imagination of DC Comics' most famous vigilante is masterfully brought to the big screen by Christopher Nolan, the director of Inception. Christopher Nolan reimagines almost every detail of Batman and give a better reimagining. For example the Bat Mobile becomes the Bat Tumbler, Batman's suit ditches all yellow, blue, and gray, for just a plain solid black Batman suit. And even the Batman logo gets an even more realistic bat reboot. Except some characters, even though they were well acted, they needed more costume detail. Like the Scarecrow, his mask and fear toxin looked awesome, but he didn't have any farm or scarecrow clothes or hat or farm weapons. Ra's al Ghul would've looked a bit better with a beard resembling the comic books or if he went shirtless in battles. And they didn't show Victor Zsasz's tally mark scars, just his knife he used. But still the movie was epic, with an all star cast in each movie or sequel that improves on the prequel. Good job Christopher Nolan! Expand

In this Movie Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne) starts as millionaire orphan when his parents were killed. Michael Caine (Alfred Pennywort) plays Bruce Wayne’s butler. He acts as a father figure and conscience to Bruce. Caine makes it totally believable that his character would be willing to go from high society butler to the helper of a vigilante. Some of his scenes comforting young Bruce after the death of his parents are really touching.
The film starts with him as a young man in a prison in Asia. He has been there researching the criminal mind and learning to fight. We learn how Bruce got there as he relives through flashbacks the death of his parents, his thirst for revenge as an adult, and his ultimate decision to fight crime in Gotham. Through anger Bruce seeks to bury his guilt about his parent's deaths. He finds himself training with the mysterious Henri Ducard (Liam Nelson) and joining him in vigilante ring The League Of Shadows. He decides to leave them when he finds out their plans of taking over Gotham.
Bruce Wayne returns after 7 years to Gotham and his ninja training with Henri Ducard comes in handy. He uses Wayne Enterprise to cover his plans and make gadgets for himself. He goes back to the cave and turns it into great hiding spot, he makes the Batmobile and his costume. Everything had a symbol of a bat. Bale delivers one of the most unique takes on the dual persona that I've ever seen. His Wayne is a much more human character than in any of his previous incarnations. His desire to get revenge on his parent's murderer is one of the most emotional scenes in the film.
Then as Bale heads to Asia for training, he becomes a very physical character and you see him battling without his mask on. This makes him more believable when he puts on the Batman mask and starts fighting. Bale also plays Wayne as an irresponsible playboy in order to get rid of any suspicion about his double life. Those are some of the funniest scenes in the movie. Bale's performance as Batman is even more landmark.
I really enjoyed watching this movie. I have seen all of them and this is one of my favorites, I love how it’s so different from the original Batman movies. I love how the special effects and music getting together and falling right into scene, so it makes it more dramatic and more exciting.

Rejecting their methods, he returns to Gotham and embarks on a one-man war against crime.

The Nolan who made Memento and Insomnia is at home with extreme psychological states - this might complete a Three Colours Of Neurosis trilogy by following memory loss and sleeplessness with phobia. It's certainly a smart move to cast the former Patrick Bateman as a Batman who always seems about to crack up. Bale even makes the old playboy-idiot act work, suggesting - as Michael Caine's dry Alfred notes - a man who needs to pretend to have fun because he might accidentally enjoy himself.

With a city that looks less fantastical than Burton's, Nolan hits the streets and slums of Gotham to show a horrific escalation of evil that demands Batman's presence even as Gordon suggests he might make it worse; old-fashioned Mob guys (Tom Wilkinson) are edged out by masked freaks (Cillian Murphy, starily creepy even before he pulls on his Scarecrow hood) and a fanatical force run by the bastard sons of Fu Manchu and Osama bin Laden. Unlike Burton, Nolan doesn't skimp on action either, with brutal fights, vehicle chases and, in one great sequence, a mass escape from Arkham Asylum of serial killers and maniacs doped up with the Scarecrow's fear serum.

Significantly grittier than previous Bat-beginnings, this finds new things to do with, and say about, a character who's been around since 1938. In a year when the franchise watchword is "dark", this delivers the full noir with a side order of dementia.

As originally envisioned by creator Bob Kane in 1939, Batman was a dark character who walked the tightropeOf all the major comic book characters to transition to a less static visual media, none has been more mistreated than the Bat-Man. As originally envisioned by creator Bob Kane in 1939, Batman was a dark character who walked the tightrope between hero and vigilante. That was his image until the 1960s, when the campy TV series starring Adam West transformed the character into a silly-but-likable good guy in gray spandex. Tim Burton re-invented Batman for a surreal (and, at the time, highly anticipated) 1989 feature, but the movie ended up focusing more on The Joker, leaving the titular hero to lick his wounds as a supporting character. By the time that Batman series reached its third movie, it had fallen back to the campy level of its TV predecessor. Now, there's nothing wrong with camp, per se, but, by the 1997 arrival of Batman and Robin, fans had had enough. Batman looked dead, at least until now.

With Batman Begins, director Christopher Nolan has gone back to basics, jettisoning both the silliness of the TV incarnation and the gothic and fetishist elements of the '90s version. This is a hard-core, down-and-gritty origin story - the tale of, as one might reasonably expect, how Batman begins. It isn't intended as a "prequel" to the 1989 film - not only is Gotham City a completely different place, but key events of the Batman chronology are re-spun. Batman Begins is designed as the start of a new life, a reboot for the franchise. In the process, Nolan has not only crafted the best Batman movie, but arguably the second-best motion picture superhero narrative (topped only by the linked duo of Superman and Superman II). For those who thought Spider-Man and X-Men had a lot to offer, wait till you see where this film goes.

To tell this first story of Batman, Nolan and co-screenwriter David Goyer weave established elements of the Caped Crusader's history into a coherent tapestry that includes material of their own devising. We see what prompts Batman to choose his image, how the Batcave is developed, where the suit and utility belt come from, and what the secret of the Batmobile is. Rather than de-mythologizing Batman, this provides us with better understanding of who he is and what motivates him - aspects whose absence were glaringly evident when Tim Burton brought his vision of the superhero to the screen 16 years ago.

Although there's less of a stylized noir feeling to Batman Begins that there was to Batman, Nolan nevertheless keeps things dark, since bats hunt at night. The action scenes are, for the most part, kinetic and exciting - things that have rarely been true of fights and chases in the superhero's previous incarnations. Burton was at a loss how to do action, and Schumacher was perfunctory. Nolan understands how to elevate the adrenaline level, with interesting camera angles, strong editing, and effective special effects work (light on CGI and heavy on models and working gadgets) all contributing.

Batman Begins is a strong re-start to a franchise that deserves better than it has often been accorded. The ending provides a direct lead-in to another Batman movie, and Nolan is on the record as saying he envisions making a trilogy. The next installment is probably three years off, but, in the meantime, we have Bryan Singer's re-invention of Warner Brother's other DC goliath, Superman Returns. If Singer can do for Superman what Nolan has done for Batman, then the summer of 2006 will have at least one film to anticipate.

But it is an extremely good film, that along with the original Batman could very well be the best of the Batman films(thought perhaps just lacking the original film's sophistication). People may find this blasphemy, but I did prefer this over The Dark Knight, but that was still very good. Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins is stylish, dark and gritty, pretty much what Batman should be. I have seen complaints that the film "contradicts" the 1989 film. Perhaps so, but what I can say in the film's defence is that Batman Begins is sort of a very loose prequel to the original movies.

Visually, Batman Begins looks absolutely incredible! It could very well be the most beautiful visually of the Batman films, with beautiful cinematography and a simply dazzling view of Gotham City itself. Another asset I appreciated was that the music score didn't overpower the action, in fact it gave some atmospheric flavour to it. As much as Danny Elfman's scores were outstanding and definitely memorable, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard do a great job with the score.

The script is taut and well-written with lines that really make you think along with some occasional offbeat humour, the plot isn't convoluted or predictable but original, the film moves briskly(the second half was marginally better in terms of pacing to the first half though but that is in no way a flaw) and the action is explosive particularly the climax and the bat-mobile car-chase. Also Christopher Nolan's direction is excellent.

The acting, aside from the visuals is what drives the film. Christian Bale is for me the best Batman since Michael Keaton. In the role of Batman he is suitably dark and brooding, like Batman should be, and as Bruce Wayne, he is dashing, handsome and ambitious. Katie Holmes actually surprised me and in a good way. She wasn't bland or annoying, I actually found her sympathetic and surprisingly good. Liam Neeson is also very good, though he has been better, while Michael Caine is perfect as Alfred. Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson and the excellent, underrated Gary Oldman are also solid in their roles, while Morgan Freeman is wonderful as always.

Overall, a brilliant film that is visually stunning, gripping and atmospheric. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

When Alfred ask Bruce, while he was preparing batman costume, "why bats ?", Bruce said "bats frighten me, it's time my enemies shared my dread". and these words indicate that Bruce face his deepest fear (bats) and now he is fearless.

it is a good movie, you should watch it before dark knight because there are some related scenes, which make Dark Knight more masterpiece than it is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 'Batman Begins' is a good start to a (mostly) great trilogy of movies, even if Batman doesn't actually come in until a bit later on in the movie.

The Scarecrow isn't a very satisfying villain, and neither is Liam Neeson's Ra's al Ghul, and the beginning seems more like a ninja movie than a crime/drama film.

But all that aside, 'Batman Begins' is fun and enjoyable, even if it doesn't at all reach the heights of its sequel.

Of all the major comic book characters to transition to a less static visual media, none has been more mistreated than the Bat-Man.

Batman Begins takes us to the dark corners in the life of billionaire Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), who is rescued from an anonymous Asian prison by the mysterious Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson). Bruce, who has been haunted by the memory of seeing his parents gunned down in front of him, has been wandering the world, picking fights with small-time thugs until Ducard finds him and offers him an alternative to his nomadic existence. Ducard wants to train Bruce so he can become a member of the League of Shadows, the organization presided over by Ra's Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe). The League of Shadows is dedicated to restoring "balance" to a world in which "criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding."

Of the five well-known actors to don the cape and cowl (Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale), there's little doubt that Bale is the most talented and the most effective. We believe him as both Bruce Wayne and Batman and, while in the latter role, he seems more than just a face behind the mask. In order to play this part, Bale had to gain about 85 pounds (re-acquiring the 65 pounds lost from his work in The Machinist and putting on an additional 20 pounds of muscle). Keaton, Kilmer, and Clooney allowed the costume to dominate their performances. Here, it's the other way around. Bale comes close to being the definitive Batman.

He is surrounded by an exceptional supporting cast, with Oscar-winners Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman leading the way. Also on hand are Gary Oldman, playing against type as a good guy; Tom Wilkinson, chewing a little on the scenery; Ken Watanabe, who barely speaks a word; and a chilling Cillian Murphy. Katie Holmes has the thankless role of the "love interest" - one of the few elements of Batman Begins that doesn't work. Holmes and Bale never "click" (at least not in the way that Christopher Reeve and Margo Kidder did in Superman, or Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man), and her character feels superfluous - just a damsel in distress.

Batman Begins is a strong re-start to a franchise that deserves better than it has often been accorded.

Bruce Wayne is a tortured soul. Batman is a flawed combatant. This creates a super-hero who is vulnerable.

Weaknesses in super-heroes is pivotal to creating emotional attachment. It, also, serves to bring them down to a human level and, therefore, relatable to our own pains and anguishes.

However, the film does have flaws. It's one thing hearing a line delivered once or twice. But three or more times is silly. Also, Zsasz is an under-developed character. Lastly, it's made evident that Bruce Wayne learns the meaning of fear through stealing goods, yet, they are his own goods.

A very good reboot and the finest Batman film.

Absolute perfect reboot of a comic book character into our modern times.

Batman Begins reinvents the origin story of Bruce Wayne/Batman and Christian Bale plays a realistic take on the character. While this may not be the perfect Batman from the comic books, as a film, this stands as the best origin story ever told.

Liam Neeson plays a perfect Ras Al Ghul. His dialogue, his motivations are what made him a memorable and capable villain for the Dark Knight. The addition of him being Batman's teacher was done superbly and brought a new layer to the character we only thought we knew.

The overall direction by Nolan felt ground-breaking to say the least for a comic book movie, and had re-invented the entire scope of what modern comic book characters can be in live-action format.

As a first part of a trilogy, this was the perfect start.

Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors because of this and he deserves to be recongnized as one of the best.

This is one of the best reboots that a franchise can pull off. This film takes some of the worlds biggest issues and actually intercepts it in a realistic way. Drug lords, economic breakdowns, falling of societies, the dark theme. This film has everything a batfan could be wishing for, not only that but its also emotional as you grow up. I actually more alike miss the character of The Dark Knight from 2005-2012. This was the best Batman on screen and was able to create something so phenomenal that no one has ever experienced before. From the opening to the climax, this film created something so emotionally incredible that there is no reason to miss this franchise. Even if your not a batfan or superhero fan, this film is much more then that, it created one of the most memorable and loved comic book superhero and made it something unique. Christopher Nolan directed this film so incredibly that Zack Snyder will never be able to achieve HALF of what Christopher Nolan did. And dont even get me started on the INCREDIBLE composer Hans Zimmer. By far one of the best orchestral soundtracks I heard, has a dark and rising theme. Its so fun to listen to and actually gives you goosebumps. The only downside is there are times.. oh who am I kidding this film is incredible.

Overall: Batman Begins is the best starter to a franchise that has been loved by millions, Christian Bales performance of The Dark Knight is unforgettable and the shear though and provoked direction of Christopher Nolan gives the franchise heart.

Overall: 8.1/10

A raw 12 round boxing match, that is engaging throughout the night.

Batman Begins

Christopher Nolan, as reported, plans to take over the DC universe to get funded for his larger than life films like Inception and Interstellar. But this plan itself is packed with an enormous amount of love for this caped crusader. And exerting that love by going through his homework through and through, you can easily see Nolan swooping in every fanboy moment on the screen. And as much as the film goes to an incredible amount of length just to punch you with that awe gasping scene, the plot moves swift, smooth and for once linearly. The plot is textbook origin tale of Bruce Wayne discovering the inner Batman in him.

Joining Nolan on script writing is David S. Goyer, a familiar face in the gothic comic world whose, as reported, lofty plot devices are grounded with signature writing style by him. And this screenplay is often considered to be a literary example for the newcomers in screenwriting, since it, despite being dipped in superhero world, treats its characters like a crime drama genre, the punches doesn't come off empty, but in bleak honesty and in black(!)

For a film that easily runs over 3 hours- or it definitely looks like it- the editing deserves a mention for its sharpness that is elevated by a whisky cinematography and exhilarating background score. Nolan has been upfront about staging Batman as a horror rather than a beloved superhero with everything sunny in the background. And that is why the themes and storylines adapted from the comic books deals with the same messy head-spinning images. There are some gruesome special effects in here that will not be seen later in the trilogy. This visual storytelling treat is something that will later in Nolan's filmography is going to expand and even take over the cinematic life of its own; you can see the hints here, how Nolan and Batman Begins.

Batman Begins is the definitive Batman origin story. This has some of the best exposition ever put to film with how they build up Batman.

Christian Bale's performance, I feel, gets too much backlash. Yeah, he has a gravelly voice (especially in the sequels), but I feel like people didn't get it. Don't get me wrong, I'll joke about it any day, but it makes sense as to why he has that voice. With Michael Keaton, he still sounded like Michael Keaton when he was Batman. Even the legendary Kevin Conroy (with his Batman from the Arkham games being my favorite Batman EVER) still sounds like Kevin Conroy when he was Batman.

When Christian Bale plays Batman, he does something that no Batman before him did: make his voice unrecognizable. Think about it, he does not sound like Christian Bale when he's playing Batman, he sounds like someone else. If Batman's goal is to make his voice unrecognizable, then he fully succeeded.

After intensive training with the guru Ra's al Ghul, he becomes a vigilante who will use all his money and power to chase the criminals of Gotham City. This film is based on the characters of DC Comics and has screenplay by Christopher Nolan (who also ensures the direction) and David S. Goyer. It has the participation of Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman.

This film is excellent in many ways, beginning with the setting and ambiance in which the story takes place. Contrary to what was the norm of the films inspired by comics, the film is quite realistic and brings the characters to a minimally credible environment. Gotham City is equal to any current metropolitan city, Bruce Wayne could be the heir of any multi-million dollar corporation we know. The script is also good, remaining true to the comics, respecting them. The film appreciated some aspects that cinema hitherto ignored as the training and preparation that Wayne made to become Batman, allowing the public to understand how the character came to be. The most poorly developed aspect were the several attempts to make humor and the unhappy jokes. This film is too dramatic for such things. Another positive aspect is the cast, carefully chosen. We must highlight particularly the performances, deeply inspired, of Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Christian Bale had, in this movie, the consecration of his career, showing great maturity and how much he has evolved since "American Psycho". Finally, we must also mention the quality of special visual and sound effects, quietly enriching the movie without stealing the scene to the actors and the story itself.

After a series of badly achieved and poorly made movies, the art of cinema finally made the deserved honors the Batman story. Finally!

Combine this was some really suspenseful action, and some amazing lines, and this is a really good superhero movie! It's sequel gets all the credit, and i consider The Dark Knight to be fcking great, but this movie needs more attention. This movie is the ultimate origin movie. It is smart and very well narrated. I love Chris Nolan narrative, and this movie is a example of Chris Nolan's greatness at telling a story. This movie has a main philosophical theme, and you don't need to overthink the movie to get that the main theme is fear. The whole movie is about how these 4 corners use fear, and we could say that this is a 4 act movie. In the first act we get introduced to Bruce Wayne, the protagonist. We get introduced to his tragedy, and despite that we all know Batman's origin story for sure, this movie can make this tragedy still interesting and a resource for Bruce to become Batman. Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul may not be the most famous Batman villains, but in this movie they are pretty great villains, and i think that Ra's Al Ghul works perfectly in this movie. I want to end this short review here to say that this movie is amazing.

Now, this is an example of how you take a comic book character and make it "gritty" and "realistic", but I hesitate to use the word "realistic", I think the better word is "less campy" or "less cheesy", because there are still some fantastic elements like the gas or just the idea of someone dressed up as a bat fighting crime. The character of Bruce Wayne is definitely the best part. This movie finally made Bruce Wayne into an actual, interesting character, and Christian Bale is still the best Batman. I didn't care for Rachel and the rest of the characters didn't have much to do in the story. The villain is pretty ridiculous and his plan is confusing. I like Scarecrow a lot, tho, and some of his scenes are just great. As a superhero movie, this didn't really work for me, as the action is so terribly edited that sometimes it becomes incomprehensible. I know superhero movies don't have to just be action, but it's one of the elements you expect from a movie like that and I didn't get that here. As a crime drama, it doesn't really work either(? If you don't know anything about Batman or if you're not a big fan of the character, all you have left is some average drama about letting go of your fears that really doesn't make much sense since the villains' plans are so ridiculous.

Overall, it's decent, but The Dark Knight outshines it by far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. We have a major piece in super-hero movies here. Certainly impressive. Bale delivers an amazing performance all along, managing to match scenes of vanity and scenes of humility. But his presence seems almost nothing compared to those of Michael Caine (playing as the moving Alfred), Cillian Murphy (as the unavoidable Scarerow), Gary Oldman (as James Gordon) or Morgan Freeman (as the clever Lucius Fox). There are all great names who did bring their strenght into this movie.

The atmosphere is gorgeous as, for the first time on screen, we do find this dark and clouded Gotham, city of uncountable crimes. Lighting is great, special effects are terrific, architectural structures are amazing. The soundtrack is nothing less than iconic. The movie allows itself to evolve in several varied environments. Choregraphies are awesome. Breathtaking stunts. It was a pleasure to see that being Batman also requires sacrifices and constant challenges. Nolan proposes a new vision of Batman's genesis and first steps.

Unfortunately I don't get this artistic choice. At several times it felt like I was watching a silly kung-fu movie, especially when Bruce starts his training in the mountains with Ducarn. It just follows the unoriginal classic schema of the evolving rookie trying to defeat his master. I can't get why Bruce had to make such a journey just in order to learn how to fight and have muscles... Plus when he come back to Gotham, the major things he does are to search crimes scenes, driving cars and using technic gadgets. What does it have to do with fistfighting ? I found the batsuit was just barely okay. Action scenes are way too over-cut: it is often hard to understand what happens on screen.

You'll surely understand that I was disappointed by Liam Neeson (playing as Henry Ducarn) and Ken Watanabe (as Ra's Al Ghul). These two characters could have been way more, and way more original ! Katie Holmes was also a questionable choice in my opinion. I felt like she didn't belong there.

There is no major reason not to watch 'Batman Begins', mainly if you like to pay attention to details, or if you like interesting acting or dark universes. But to me it was too much to take under the Batman label.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved how the complete movie had a dramatic touch to it. A touch that all batman movies should be about. The choreographic martial arts training with the black ninjas would have been a ridiculous scene if the movie didn't have the dark-dramatic touch. A darkened world but still maintaining humorous elements here and there. A classic one Expand

Concerning theBatman Begins is a very good introductory to Nolan's Batman and just like many backstories it spends a huge amount of time developing and introducing the different characters we all know and love at the end of the trilogy. Concerning the narrative, there isn't much tension built up and you never really feel as if any of the main characters could actually die, hell there's even humour sprinkled around in very serious scenes. But in all seriousness, if you want to watch Nolan's Batman movies, I highly recommend to not skip this one, it's surely not as good ass the others, but still important nonetheless. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an action drama film, based on the DC comics characters. The main themes covered are justice, morality and determination to help those who can't help themselves.

It is a relatively dark film, both in terms of it being quite serious and slightly sinister in tone (conveyed by the instrumental pieces played) and also, at times, in terms of the physical lighting. It is, of course, live action and so particularly young kids may find it a bit boring, as it is relatively dialogue heavy, although there are some fast and exciting action scenes but there's also a decent amount of emphasis on character background/development (mostly the main character, Bruce Wayne). I definitely felt that this film did well in putting across a chilly sense that something big was going to happen sometime soon-ish. I would say that its perhaps mildly frightening but I don't think thats the best term to use - all I can think to say is that I was intrigued to keep watching, as it felt like there was a mysterious element, the impending doom style musical score and the way the plot slowly played out made me feel like I wanted to see how things would work out and learn why things are as they are.

I suppose you could argue that the film is perhaps a bit 'high and mighty' and that it covers the age old theme of wanting to right wrongs and so on but for the most part that didn't bother me. The main character, while clearly fictional, is someone who I'd like to think most people could relate to, to one extent or another. I felt that the script was pretty decent - there is some fairly witty dialogue present and while the plot pace is relatively slow, certainly to start with, there were some surprising turn of events which left me, if anything, more keen to keep watching and see what the final outcome would be. I can't honestly say I'm a massive fan of comic book adaptations as such, some I really don't like but I've seen a few and I've liked one or two - the Dark Knight films being among them.

Cast wise, Christian Bale plays the main character, Bruce Wayne. He comes across as quite mysterious (unsurprisingly), quite strong willed and with a steely determination. He seemed pretty believable, that is apart from the whole super power side of things of course! plot aside, I felt he did well in the role, bringing the character to life and not seeming too much of a caricature, as other actors may have done. This film has a great cast including many other well regarded actors, including Michael Caine as the butlet, Alfred, Liam Neeson as Ducard, who helps to train Bruce, Katie Holmes who plays his girlfriend Rachel Dawes, Gary Oldman who plays Jim Gordon and Cillian Murphy as Dr. Jonathan Crange. Morgan Freeman, Tom Wilkinson and Rutger Hauer also make appearances. The cast list certainly helped raise my interest enough to want to watch the film in the first place and all in all it lived up to my expectations.

Content wise, this film contains some instances of strong language, mild to moderate violence (including fistfights and comic violence) plus drug references and in general it has a sinister and dark feel to it, which may disturb or otherwise frighten very young viewers. The film carries a 12 rating to reflect this.

Yes I would recommend this film, as I felt it featured a good cast, good character development, it was quite engrossing and the plot wasn't especially predictable I suppose. It could be argued that its a little preachy but then thats pretty much to be expected and I didn't feel it by any means ruined the film for me, with the only other obvious criticism being that its a bit dialogue heavy and a little slow, pace wise, certainly for the first half of the film but for the most part its worth a watch and so I'd encourage you to stick with it.

I didn't know what to expect from it. I just wanted to watch The Dark Knight and I had heard that it was a sequel to this movie, so I had to see this first in order to have some "actual" good time. Instead I ended up really liking this one. This is the kind of movie I'd call something that defined the cinema of the mid 2000s. And it's definitely for all the good reasons.

The movie begins with Bruce Wayne being in prison and then being recruited by The League of Assassins to become one of them. Normally I hate the idea that movies use by beginning at some random event and then giving exposition of the past. It happens everywhere - Sonic the Hedgehog, Megamind, Birds of Prey, Man of Steel, it happens in so many places. But I won't complain about that, considering that none of the movies I can think of came before this. So let's just say it was a new idea back then.

The way Bruce Wayne comes back and realises he can't do anything to the bad guys because they know he has a lot to lose and so takes the mantle so that they fear the same thing as him was very exciting. It's one of the key moments of this movie I always look forward to whenever I watch this movie. I really like how he slowly transforms into Batman, initially beginning with just a regular costume and then slowly upgrading his suit, weapons and finally his Batmobile.

I didn't know anything about any Batman villain other than Joker, Deathstroke, Harley Quinn and Killer Croc. So the villains of this movie namely Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow were completely new to me. Whatever they'd have done with these characters, I'd have accepted it all like a blank slate. And they really did them perfectly. Ra's wanted Batman to kill, while Scarecrow wanted to instill fear in all the residents of Gotham. Both of these motives are characteristics that define Batman - someone who will instill fear in the midsn of all the criminals but will never kill. Though that's one problem in this movie since he kills a lot - first the fake Ra's, then the League of Assassins in the burning building, then a cop in a police car and finally Ra's himself (his no kill rule includes saving people so saying that he didn't save him is a debunked excuse).

The movie has aged pretty poorly in terms of video quality. It is very grainy and the colours are also very dull which can easily get mixed if watched on a new TV. This is really weird because Superman Returns came out just a year later but its video quality is absolutely perfect in spite of being made by the same company. It needs to be remastered to 4K using AI upscaling and added more colour variations so that it is fit to be watched. Once that happens, I'd really be willing to watch it again.
