Avatar is a movie with a story that has a story that's been done before, with adequate acting (and I use adequate very generously), and poor pacing. The effects were amazing, but thirty years down the line, these effects will be outdated, and what will we be left with? A movie with an overused plot, adequate acting, and poor pacing, with NO AMAZING EFFECTS. This movie set a bad example for movies everywhere, telling moviemakers all over the world that 3D sells, and that originality and creativity does not. Expand

First of all, does he not understand the insane electricity bill the planet would be receiving every month due to the lighting sources placed in the ground? I also feel that he left out the Blue Penis demographic, which I believed this would be the only movie of the Winter that could compare to the Blue Penis quota set by Watchmen, which was still quite low. On the whole, the movie was less filled with phosphorescent genitalia than I was hoping for. Four words to describe this movie: NOT ENOUGH BLUE PENIS! Expand

Visuals make up for missing story, but engaged me only for about 1/2 movie. Then i got bored and little logical errors ruined reality feeling of the movie - e.g. there exists no real communication link between human and avatar - they are connected by magic in otherwise technoworld, why someone makes giant earthmoving machine with cameras that can be taken off with a rock, why early 21st century technology in a distant future, and so on. Last 20 minutes of fighting, killing and dying got me engaged again. Luckily we do not need to kill anybody for real in Colloseum these days - computer graphics are good enough, but basic joy of seeing bad guy killed are ageless. There are two new 'props' i have not yet seen in the movie - universal man-animal interface the natives use to connect with various living things and biological network storage where navi's upload their deceased for eternal storage :) Unfortunately what these things could mean for humanity does concern Cameron not. These are props to make scene. This is not the movie i will keep at home and watch again. Expand

While this film will be remembered as probably the first film with properly natural looking and animated cgi characters and one of the only films so far that managed to use 3d effects without overusing gratuitous "coming at you" shots While this film will be remembered as probably the first film with properly natural looking and animated cgi characters and one of the only films so far that managed to use 3d effects without overusing gratuitous "coming at you" shots I'm afraid that the actual film underneath the graphics it is very light with all the attention focused on the visual flair and not the plot or characters. A score of 4/10 represents what is now at the start of 2010; a mediocre film which showcases current computer graphics technology at its peak. In a few years this technology will be outdated and it is my belief that the film will be mostly forgotten. It is definitely not so bad that it's unwatchable but the far too long run time and simple story mean that I'd never bother watching it again. Expand

However, if I were Kevin Costner, I'd sue. This is just basically "Dances with Wolves" in outer space. Cameron even rips himself off by taking elements of "Aliens" and putting them here. It just seems to me that so much time was spent on the visuals that it affected the time needed to develop a more original script/story. Once again, I really wish Cameron would get a co-writer as he really needs one. Regardless, I recommend seeing it for the stunning visuals. Expand

It felt more like a retold western set in a futuristic setting than a sci-fi epic. In James Cameron's vision mankind - surprise, surprise - want to harvest a distant planet of it's valuable materials with little regard for the planet's inhabitants which paints the long and cliché story driven film that this is: Eco warriors fighting against evil invaders who would sooner destroy the planet than look for an alternative mining site. Dialogue was good, mostly, but in parts seemed a bit off and awkward, especially when you remember that the main character was a human controlling an alien body from a nearby outpost. Visually the film is quite impressive but not not a huge step over what we haven't already seen in other CGI movies over the past ten years. Overall it's an "okay" movie. Not the best and certainly not the "greatest adventure of all time", if you'd even deem it in the slightest bit of an adventure, but worth seeing if you've nothing else on your list of movies to rent. I say this because all who are extolling this movie as a 10 seem to only talk about the great visuals (especially in IMAX 3D) What they don't talk about is the story. It is telling. The movie was OK at best. I am sad to say that I saw it first in 2d and then in IMAX 3d just to see if it was that much better. It was not. I preferred it in 2D. Maybe because It was new then or maybe because I could actually focus on what I wanted to. I admit I am no fan of the new 3D gimmick... Long review short. There were a few interesting concepts, like a consciousness arising out of a network comparable to the human brain, (albeit of trees), coevolution creating a world full of closely interacting species, with a physical link instead of behavioral mostly, and the idea that love may be dependent not on species so much as comparable mental capacity once bodies are a thing of the past or almost so. Sadly none of these were developed and the last I think wasn't even thought of by the film-maker. It was pretty but it was hollow. Trust the reviews not the numbers pasted on them. The 10s were wowed by pretty lights the 5s and lower were disappointed by the lack of any interesting story, political preaching or sci-fi made for people who don't like sci-fi. Expand

Visually, it was stunning but not the world-changer that I had been lead to believe that it was - at least for the public. It may be this type of world-changer for the industry. It was beautiful but failed to live up to the high expectations that I had. As a movie, I thought it was the biggest piece of anti-military, anti-corporate America, and pro-enviromentalist propoganda that I had ever seen. It was so one-sided that it hurt the film. Could he not have filled in some backstory on what drove the corporation to need the underground resource other than pure evil greed or give the military a more realistic sense other than simple blood-lust. There was no depth to these elements of the story which exposed Cameron's liberal, self-hating mindset. If he spent as much time and energy into making a great movie as he did into pushing his liberal agenda then it would have been huge success instead of the beautiful propoganda piece that was released. The most successful part of Cameron's operation was making sure the full extent of the bias of his film was not discussed before opening weekend to save the boxoffice. That will not be the case the second weekend. Prepare for the backlash. Expand

However, despite the stunning, naturalistic, organic look of the characters and environments, the heavy handed themes and stock characters hold this movie back. This is on of those movies where the director writes the point of the plot on a baseball bad and repeatedly hits the audience over the head with it. We get it: The planet Pandora is Iraq or Afghanistan or any other place the U.S. invaded and tried to plunder only to be rebuffed a determined native population. Subtlety is clearly not Cameron's style. Even though I enjoyed the breath-taking visuals (especially in 3-D IMAX) and all the effort put into the creation of the alien creatures/their culture, I kept getting distracted by the cliche characters from Earth's military industrial complex who seemed to do their basic training at central casting. I guess when you make $500 million movie you need to present clear archetypes so that even the simplest boob can understand. Although not completely brainless, this is not exactly a thinkin' fella's movie. What it is is great Hollywood sci-fi action which does have something to say. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Can't believe people can call it an instant classic. nor that it's ranked in the top with really great movies such as The Godfather and Shawshank Redemption. It doesn't deserve to be among the top 500 movies on IMDB. Read any positive review and all you hear is how cool the visuals are, how the CGI is breathtaking and so on. What they don't tell you is that the plot is basically written by a 5-year old. Avatar is a big, fat, tired old cliché with a dazzling new paint job. Most of the "plot" is derived from old and often better material, basically the whole "Sorry about Colonialism"- and "The Noble Savage"-genres that include movies and books such as Dances with Wolves, A Man Called Horse, The Last Samurai, The Last of the Mohicans, Dune, Lawrence of Arabia, Ferngully, Pocahontas, Robinson Crusoue, The Thin Red Line, Moby Dick and many, many, many others. The acting, while not bad is not memorable either, nor are the many stock character suck as Jake and Grace. In fact, Avatar has none of the hallmarks of a classic: great script, superior acting, memorable characters that you root for or even suspence or immersion. Everyone is so wooed by the visuals, but great visual by itself doesn't make a good movie. I doubt people will look back to this movie in 50 years time and consider it a classic, especially in ten years time when the CGI starts to look really dated. At it's best Avatar is a good popcorn movie, you sit awed for about two hours but after that it's easily forgettable, and it deserves nothing better. Expand

The characters, the were like robots, with cartoonish generals and that sort of crowd. The weird blue chick was cool at first but soon got very annoying. Also, why is this Sam Worthington guy in so many movies? Why does James Cameron keep casting him? I mean come on, Teller would have been a more reasonable choice than that stooge. Still, the movie has eye-popping FX and the 3D is the best I've ever seen, so it's still probably worth your time if you enjoy other films by Cameron. The mythology is fairly deep, if not cliched, as well so Cameron is technically able to write a story a four year old couldn't. This would all be fine for a animated series, but spending all that money on FX for something like this probably isn't worth. Well, they made an ungodly amount of cashola on this movie, so I guess it was worth it. Then everybody talks about how great this movie is, and The Hurt Locker loses at the Golden Globes. It's story is a hackneyed, childish and sub-par re-telling. VFX and animation were mostly great but it's art and designs were entirely derivative and or directly copied from a variety of sources without the slightest hint of tribute or homage. It's not even a challenge to find nearly identical designs to everything in Avatar that pre-date it's production.

The acting and voicework are rather horrible in this feature, more-so with the human actors than the cartoon parts. But the biggest problem I found with Avatar is that it takes on the massive, painful, multi-dimensional and complicated subjects of human greed and violence and wraps everything up in under three hours with a clean and nearly happy ending and leaves the audience with no lingering important questions. Completely unrealistic and insane for a public that has become completely unrealistic and entirely insane.

On a scale of 0 to 10, 5.5 would be an average score (at least mathematically) . I find the VFX and technology to be very high 8-9 (way above average but not unbeatable) -but the actual movie itself, the story, characters, acting, dialog, etc. to be far below average, a 3 or generous 4 perhaps.

If you are just in it for the FX or some sort amusement park roller-coaster then you are probably in for a treat. Otherwise you will likely be disappointed. It doesn't hold a candle to Cameron's other films and his willing and overt participation in this films disgusting hype/marketing machine really put me off him, although I genuinely loved many of his previous works up to this point.

The visuals were amazing, of course, anyone could tell you that. However, the plot was disgustingly unoriginal and offensive on some points. The alien race is very clearly representing the Native Americans of Americas past. Not only are they on a very liberal agenda, living off the land, hunting, chanting, no need for technical advancement... etc. they also steal dress and even language and sound of Native Americans which i find extremely disrespectful and distasteful. Second, why are these humans so heartless. I've never encountered a business man so classless and idiotic. The general is all around bloodthirsty for no apparent reason other than the fact that he has a superman complex. While the visuals are amazing, there are no creative creatures throughout the entire film excluding the flying ones. Horses, rhinos, jungle cats, monkeys, lizards... its incredibly unimaginative. The relationship of different departments all under the figurehead of a mining operation is laughable. Science would never take a back seat to pure profit when it came to a world where intelligent life and different species were discovered. I don't care how far into the future this is, the human race has already evolved beyond the point of the barbaric atrocities portrayed in this movie, ESPECIALLY to a new intelligent species. Its insane to think this movie is even plausible, even 20 years ago when the script was being written. It literally makes me sick that all this visual ingenuity is going into a recycled, over hyped peace of garbage like this.

Cameron hit on special effects but other than that, unoriginal in story and slightly boring. Too much CGI for my liking. Very well done effects but the story falls short of new and/or exciting.

These aspects are the highlight of the film. If you get the opportunity to see Avatar on a movie theater screen then it is a must see due to it's brilliance on the big screen. However on the small screen much of this brilliance is less in the forefront and this allows you to see through how pretty it is and see how the story is really lacking. Avatar's story line is an unoriginal mishmash of different movies filled with uninspiring characters. Yes this movie will awe you with it's visual effects but if you're looking for a movie with a deep story Avatar is not it. the acting all an all was good and the story was not lacking at any fault of the actors. This movie is a typical James Cameron spectacle with little more than pretty scenery. Expand

The movie is good, but not so good for me. The film serves only to see it once and then forget about it.

Avatar is far too long and is something that I would expect Michael Bay to direct. Expand
