It opts for the task of illustrating rather than dramatising the story; thus it delivers very little in the way of tension, but a lot in the way of handsome period detail, where even the people are lovingly-placed props.

Filled with cliches -- we've seen this story many times before. The movie is way too long, and yet the only thing that's different comes at the end (I won't ruin it), and barely any time is spent on it.

The best big studio movie of the year. I never thought a movie that is over two and a half hours long could hold my interest like this one did. The acting, directing and writing are all top notch.

The one clean cop in a sea of corruption, Richard Roberts, sets out to stop his drug trade and put Lucas behind bars.

The film is told almost in documentary style with the focus firmly on the plot and characters involved. Both leads, Russell Crowe and Denzil Washington, are as impressive as ever really getting to grips with their characters and making them come across as very believable.

Perhaps running a fraction to long American Gangster nevertheless tells an entertaining cat and mouse story that is intelligent and entertaining enough to hold the attention of most viewers.

Scott borrows heavily from Scarface and Goodfellas in his tale of Frank's rise from unknown affiliate to drug kingpin, and the increasing paranoia and desperation that come with such a transformation. American Gangster feels more like a slightly dumbed-down tribute to these gangster masterpieces, rather than something equally sublime. That being said, American Gangster is one of the finest gangster films of recent years, if a little rough around the edges. At two and a half hours, it definitely felt as though some scenes could have been shortened, or even cut out altogether. The lengthy viewing time also made some of the drama feel a little forced and overexaggerated. Washington is fantastic as the polite and charismatic (but also ruthless) Lucas, and gives one of the best performances of his career. Crowe is a little overshadowed by Washington, but nevertheless does a fine job. The cinematography is near-perfect, the soundtrack complementing the 70's setting and role of the Vietnam War in the film was unexpected but certainly a nice touch. All in all, American Gangster is a fine addition to the dozens of gangster films out there, but it's unlikely it'll be cherished as a classic. Expand

This film is another stinker, and for many of the same reasons. For some reason, now and then, Ridley cannot transcend the genre he masters in other films. What we end up with is flaccid story development and the industry’s best talent wasted on characters you cannot for a moment take seriously.

As in Denzel Washingston, the gangsta with a heart of gold. Give me a break! Anyone who saw Training Day knows Washington can play malevolent with the best of them. But here his role is so corny, he has nothing to work with. This film is an embarrassment to his career.

The same can be said for Russell Crowe’s performance. This guy tends to be pretty picky about the roles he takes on, but perhaps because this was done earlier in his career, he went along with a weak, phoned-in performance. Very disappointing from one of the most volcanic actors of his tme.

Bad movies have a way of jumping out at you. Within ten minutes of the beginning of this one I realized not a word or a scene was believable. Mostly I blame the writing. As a portrayal of the gangsta lifestyle this is the polar opposite of Scorcese’s Goodfellas, where every character is a rounded human being and their relationships make sense. Because I believed in the director and the leads I stuck this movie out to the end but to no avail. So Ridley, that’s two you owe me.

American Gangster was beloved by criticsI'm not particularly fond of Russell Crowe, but when he came together with Ridley Scott, some terrific movies got made. Throw Denzel Washington into the mix and you have the makings of an epic drama. American Gangster was beloved by critics and the academy alike, but it also received negative reviews from the people the story was based on, who claimed it was ninety percent fiction. The film takes almost 3 hours to tell us the story of Frank Lucas, a man who was mentored by the great Bumpy Johnson, and ran Harlem, along with much of the heroin on the east coast from 1969 to 1977. In passed years, even prior to this film, Frank Lucas has been immortalized as some kind of hero. Many believe that he kept the people of Harlem out of poverty and ultimately did the right thing, once his conscience caught up with him. The film American Gangster seems to agree with this take on the story and portray Lucas as a man larger than life, who you want to like, despite his criminal activity. The truth is that Lucas was no hero, as for a decade he ran a crew as large as any organized crime family, and he was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people who overdosed on his junk. When Lucas turned states evidence, leading to the arrest of 150 people, most of whom were corrupt officials in New York City, it had nothing to do with his conscience, he just wanted to stay out of jail. That's not how it portrayed and was the only thing that really kept this film from getting a five star rating. American Gangster is shot much in the same style as Heat, with a large cast and fasting moving scenes. Denzel Washington is always good, but when he's playing someone from his own community he really steps it up to a whole other level. Washington absolutely should have received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Lucas. Regardless of how true the story may have been, Washington was just amazing. Denzel is paired with Russell Crowe, who portrays the man who is chasing him, a very deep and interesting man that seemed to fit Crowe's personality to a tee. American Gangster is a long, fast moving story, that may not be all that accurate, but you will be hard pressed to find a better cast then the one they had and for that, American Gangster is labeled as a must see movie. With terrific performances from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, American Gangster feels more like a 1970s-early 1990s gangster flick, rather than one released in 2007. With strong writing, good characterization, and a steady pace, the length of American Gangster never becomes a problem and the film never feels like it has filler. While it does pale in comparison to better gangster films like The Godfather or Goodfellas, it is a great look at New York City crime and Frank Lucas in particular, while serving as yet another showcase for Denzel Washington. A truly sprawling and epic feeling biopic, American Gangster successfully covers its subject, while expertly handling interweaving subplots and having a surprising lack of confusion when it comes to following both its plot and large cast of characters. Overall, American Gangster is a very good crime film that feels heavily indebted to gangster films of old. Expand

For all I know is that it's directed by Ridley Scott and it's based on the true story about a career criminal, Frank Lucas and detective Richie Roberts. When frank Lucas' boss, Bumpy dies he takes over as boss and entering the heroin trade, buying directly from producers in Thailand and smuggling it into the U.S. through returning Vietnam War servicemen. Richie Roberts is going through a divorce with his ex-wife while tracking Frank Lucas and his band of men. Whenever I thought about this I was thinking that both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe both starred in the movie that I've never seen before but I heard about it is Virtuosity. Much like many gangster flicks like Casino, Scarface and Carlito's Day, this one is one of the most essential ones from Ridley Scott. This is what it's about, this movie has great acting by far even from Denzel Washington, the production value is phenomenal, the set designs are great, everything about is done great. This is what biography is all about, setting the story faithful to the original biography. Very essential indeed, anything what I've seen that this movie has to offer, amazing. Expand

The true story at its core — of the rise, fall and redemption of a ’70s-era Harlem drug lord — is so terrific, it’s amazing it wasn’t put onscreen long ago, and it would be difficult today to find two better actors to pit against one another, as hoodlum and cop, respectively, than Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. With so many elements going for it, this big, fat Universal release is absorbing, exciting at times and undeniably entertaining.

Memories of numerous classics hang over this film like banners commemorating past championship teams — “The Godfather,” “Serpico,” “Prince of the City,” “Scarface” and “Goodfellas,” among other modern-era crime-pic landmarks. Like most of those, this is a quintessential New York story, one you feel could have been the basis for a Sidney Lumet masterpiece. But while “American Gangster” is made with consummate professionalism on every level, it just doesn’t quite feel like the real deal; it delivers, but doesn’t soar.

Based on a New York magazine article by Mark Jacobson, the story arc is so sensational it warrants outsized treatment. Frank Lucas rose from Harlem crime-world minion to drug kingpin by bringing in uncut heroin straight from Southeast Asia during the height of the Vietnam War. At least the way the script tells it, his steps were dogged by notably incorruptible working-class federal investigator Richie Roberts (a man not once mentioned in Jacobson’s piece), and the upshot was the hammer coming down on the NYPD’s drug enforcement cops, three-fourths of whom were on the take.

Steven Zaillian’s script plausibly lays the story out on parallel tracks, following the two men until they finally meet very late in the game. It’s an intelligent, craftsmanlike job that coherently lays out a complicated, multifaceted tale, but also one that serves up genuine intensity and overblown aspects in virtually equal measure, with director Ridley Scott following suit.

Contrast between the two protags is neatly set up. Frank (Denzel Washington), driver and collector for legendary Harlem hood Bumpy Johnson (Clarence Williams III, classy), steps into the void left by his mentor’s death in 1968 by traveling to the jungles of Thailand and, with crucial help from an Army relative, transporting 100 kilos of pure heroin back to the U.S. via military planes. Eliminating any middleman, Frank floods the streets with top-quality stuff, undercuts the competition’s prices and reaps huge profits.

In an era of pimp-style flash and braggadacio, Frank cuts an intriguingly low-key profile; he dresses conservatively, eats breakfast alone early every morning in a local diner and seems not to indulge in his own merchandise. But when crossed, he doesn’t hesitate to administer punishment personally by shooting the transgressor himself in broad daylight.

On the other hand, Richie (Russell Crowe) is a sweaty, scraping-it-together Joisy kid going through an unpleasant divorce and studying for a law degree when he’s not chasing down drug dealers. He becomes the notorious exception to the rule in his profession when he busts a couple guys with a million bucks in the trunk and insists on turning it in.

With little visible opposition, Frank does more than his share to spread drugs and crime throughout New York. Pic barrels like an uptown express through this moral issue, neither condemning the self-made entrepreneur nor excessively glamorizing him, blaxploitation-style (the real Frank Lucas was, by all accounts, considerably flashier than Washington’s version allows).

To make an end run around the NYPD, the feds recruit Richie to lead their own drug probe, a move that bumps Mr. Clean up against top cop Det. Trupo (Josh Brolin) in some of the film’s most jolting interludes. Trupo’s brazen sense of entitlement to a cut of everyone’s drug profits is jaw-droppingly audacious, and it’s played to the hilt of threatening menace by Brolin, who steals scenes from even Washington and Crowe. With this and his splendid turn in “No Country for Old Men,” Brolin has graduated to the bigs this year.

But it’s when Richie, in a spectacular raid on Frank’s factory, nails his prey, and Washington and Crowe finally end up across a desk from one another in a small room, that “American Gangster” achieves maximum voltage. What goes down during their exchanges proves all the more engrossing thanks to the shrewd underplaying of these two terrific actors, both of whom rise to the occasion when pitted opposite the best.

Still, there’s an irony in that, good as he is, Crowe is essentially miscast as the tenacious working-class Jewish kid who brings Frank down. Similarly miscast is director Scott, whose greatest strengths lie in bringing to life grandly conceived portraits of distant worlds past and future, rather than in contemporary realism.

Still, Washington’s steely grip on his impersonation of Frank Lucas holds the film together.

The script shows how Lucas, initially a hand-man of the mobster Bumpy Johnson, manages to take advantage of his relations in the Far East and the Vietnam War to import, directly and without any intermediary, pure heroin into the United States, which goes on selling at a lower price than the competitors. The film also shows the efforts of an honest policeman, Richie Roberts, to fight organized crime and, at the same time, stay away from the corruption schemes in which almost all New York Police were involved then.

The film is excellent for those who, like me, like films involving mobsters and the like. It's not a classic, but it works wonderfully. It begins slowly, with the death of Bumpy and the hypocrisy of society, which is massively rushing to the funeral despite being a criminal and a murderer. The pace is a little slow and its long length (almost three hours, in the extended version, which I saw) can intimidate some viewers, but the story develops well, gradually involving the audience. It is well worth spending some extra time on this film and seeing it as it deserves to be seen.

Ridley Scott is a director who needs no introduction and who has previously shown us that he is a man of talent and that he knows how to get the best out of what he is given to work. Therefore, I am not surprised that the director here shows how to deal with the actors. The cast is full of noble names in the industry, starting with Denzel Washington, who offers us a great and committed work. I am not able to say that it is the best of this actor, because he is very regular in his work and offers us, almost always, good works, but it is really good to see him here in another great role. Russell Crowe also shines in this film, giving his character an air of rebelliousness, unblemished and irreducible. The list of notable names in the supporting roles is extensive, but I can say that I enjoyed Josh Brolin's work as one of the corrupt cops, Chiwetel Ejiofor and T. I. as mobsters. And although the film is very masculine, both in the theme and the cast, I would like to highlight the good performances of Ruby Dee and Lymari Nadal, in very interesting female characters.

Technically, it is a contained film, which favors realism over the spectacle. There is not much action and the one that exists was very well done, without spectacularity or excessive noise. Cinematography is very pleasant, with good contrast and excellent use of light. Visually, it somewhat resembles the great gangster epics, and I have no doubt that Scott was influenced by Scorsese's style. The sets and costumes are excellent, with very interesting notes that take us back to the period when everything is happening (for example, TV news and some cars). I especially liked the elegant costumes reserved for Washington. The soundtrack, discreetly, contributes a lot to the environment.

Long, boring, stupid.

I did not like American Gangster. In fact there were points in the movie where I hated it. Its possibly the most unoriginal crime drama Iv seen, which would be fine if there were any characters to get attached to but everyone in the film is either a trope turned up to 11 or has the personality of a brick. The main character Frank has the depth of a puddle, he kills people for money because its convenient and then decides one day that he is gonna travel to a country he has never been to score a heroin deal. Seriously it happens that quick. No planning, no logic, just "his cousin knows a guy". That is pretty much how the entire movie plays out, Denzel does something unbelievable that would be very difficult which doesn't get explained as he makes a mean face, rinse and repeat for 2 and a half hours. The detective is the worst character in the entire movie. The scene where he is one presenting the case against Frank is possibly the dumbest scene in any crime drama, yeah lets let the alcoholic detective prosecute the criminal. The scene where the detective equates Frank to "progress" in the interrogation because he is black is also really stupid, yeah the criminal who murders people and peddles heroin is such a hero, real progressive.

I enjoyed it. I was a bit lost at the beginning because I felt like everything started kind of fast, but I gradually got into it and especially from the second half of the movie I enjoyed it and got really into it. The fact that this is a film based on a true story helped a lot. I am satisfied. We had a view from both the police and the gangster's side. That didn't hurt. As always, I was more interested in the gangster's perspective, but I wasn't downright bored by the police perspective, so it didn't matter.
