Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) shuttle is lost in space for 57 years before being discovered by a deep space salvage team. Upon arriving at a what they think is a human colony, they make a shocking discover for which they are not prepared.

Aliens largely forgoes the slow-paced horror of its predecessor in favour of all out action, and whilst that makes for a very different movie, it is one of those rare sequels that is just as good as the original. Sigourney Weaver is again fantastic, both as an action star and during the more emotional scenes, and the amazing visuals still largely hold up to this day. Some of those space marines sure are dumb though!

It is the perfect compliment to Alien (1979). The first film was a claustrophobic suspenseful horror film and this is an intense action film. They are both equally entertaining. The vast majority of the special effects are convincing and realistic, my only gripe is the rear-screen projection as it looks washed-out compared to the foreground. There is so much truly stunning cinematography. Sound design continues the epic memorable trend set by the first film. The most memorable being the pulse rifle sounds. Characters are memorable and interesting except maybe Newt who can get a little annoying but overall that is a minor gripe. There are some truly awesome moments in the story that is perfectly told. The special edition is better than the theatrical version but it is very long! I love the action and evolution of the series. It is exciting and fun. I do usually prefer suspense to action. I loved most of the old-school ambitious effects. More action than horror, not a bad thing, very good action at that. Expand

It is essential viewing for everyone over 18 in my opinion.
The cinemetrography, direction, sound design, special effects and the performances are amazing. In many ways it is better than the original, despite the fact they are such different movies. To me, this is a great way of introducting someone to Sci-Fi to show its immense contribution to cinema.

Dennoch gute schauspielerische Leistung und grandioses Sounddesign

It is nearly as good as Ridley Scott's Alien of course and if Scott's movie is a masterpiece, this one comes very close. Cameron here puts aside what you have seen in the first film but without upsetting everything. While Scott's film had a thriller imprint in fact the alien was one only and you could only see it at the end of the movie. Here Cameron shoots a real action movie set in space actually. The Aliens multiply and the action scenes that see our astronauts fighting against the Xenomorphs are many and are all masterfully directed. Expand

Aliens I have often seen and heard being described as one of the best sequels ever made, and I have to heartily concur. Aliens is every bit as good as Alien, and just a brilliant film. The production design once again is immaculate with the spectacle surpassing Alien(to me), while the script is credible, the story interesting and well-constructed and James Cameron's direction brilliant. As with Alien, there are also some very genuine shocks and scares, and if there was something I marginally preferred here it was the suspense which was particularly nail-biting. The acting once again is top notch, all the supporting cast do great work but Sigourney Weaver is simply terrific and it helps that Ellen Ripley is expanded upon here. Overall, just like Alien, a sci-fi classic. 10/10 Bethany Cox Expand

A better sequel to 'Alien' than I was expecting.

'Aliens' - love the creativity, guys! - is a minute jot off the original but it remains a thoroughly enjoyable film - despite a slightly longer run time, which pleasantly doesn't hamper events. Sigourney Weaver is terrific again; I can see why these films launched her career.

I will say parts of this 1986 flick are a tad repetitive from the original and a few bits are predictable, e.g. the arcs of Lance Henriksen's Bishop and Paul Reiser's Carter, but when judged overall it's another entertaining release from this franchise.

I look forward to seeing if they made it a hat-trick with 'Alien³'.

GAME OVER MAN! GAME OVER!

A white knuckle ride from start to finish. Often given as the example of when sequels out-do the original (although that can be argued).

Aliens' 2 1/2 run time never outstays its welcome as James Cameron smashes from one set piece to the next as we follow a rag tag bunch of marines with a reluctant Elen Ripley in toe as they head back to LV-426 from the first film to find out what the hell is going on down there.

This film absolutely rocks! It's script is snappy delivering endlessly quotable dialogue, the special effects still look awesome and the imagery designed by Giger still shocks and disgusts to this day. The cast features the standard Cameron recruits including an excellent Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton who arguably steals every scene he is in.

Aliens is a film that took its source material and revolutionised it acting as a framework for how movie sequels should be made. Not just a re-hash but a reimagining. It is a shame many film makers don't pay attention to the lessons learnt here.

For any science fiction fan this is mandatory viewing.

The movie's got a brilliant story, which is about this lass called Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) who's sent back to the planet LV-426 to fix the contact with a terraforming colony.

However, when Ripley and her team get there, she later bumps into the Alien Queen and her offspring, the team have got to fight the Alien Queen and her offspring to survive. The acting from all of the main characters throughout this movie is all honestly brilliant and non of the actors/actresses feel out of character at any moment in this movie.

The dialogue which is given and received from each character throughout this movie is honestly all very strong dialogue and non of the dialogue feels forced in any sort of way.

Also, the cinematography which was done by Adrian Biddle is honestly beautiful. He captures every single moment so well and especially the action scenes, he does such a great job on capturing these moments so well.

The action scenes throughout this movie are all honestly brilliant and they all work so well. Most of the action scenes hold up pretty well because they mainly used practical effects for them.

The movie's even got a beautiful soundtrack which was composed by James Horner. He did such a great job on composing such a beautiful soundtrack for this movie and the soundtrack is used so amazingly throughout this movie.

Finally, the pacing throughout this movie is honestly brilliant, every moment is built up very well with the pacing. While, non of the scenes which end up happening throughout this movie aren't built up badly.

The movie's even got some great emotions with the characters throughout this movie. They're also very well built up with the amazing pacing which this movie's got.

The design of the Aliens throughout this movie have got a very scaly, vicious and a very deadly look to them, which really adds to them as a creature throughout this movie.

Overall, Aliens is a brilliant movie and it's honestly a masterpiece and a half. The movie's got a brilliant story, brilliant acting, very strong dialogue, beautiful cinematography, brilliant action scenes, a beautiful soundtrack, brilliant pacing, great emotions and some very vicious looking Aliens.

I'd honestly recommend everyone to watch this movie straight after watching Alien because you'll honestly enjoy this one as much as Alien (1979). It's honestly worth the watch if you enjoyed the first one or if you just enjoy watching Action/Horror movie's, this is the movie for you.

AfterThe rare case of a sequel that rivals an excellent predecessor. Even more it changes the formula. While Alien is pure science fiction horror Aliens is more science fiction / action with horror elements. It continues Ellen Ripleys story. After surviving the events of Alien she drifted in space for 57 years until she is found by another ship. After telling her story no one believes her and she is turned into an outcast. However she got the information that on the moon where the eggs were found a colony was established. After the contact with the colony is lost she is recruited for investigation together with a group of space marines. So starts the story. It is intense, has great action, suspense and creates this feeling of distrust and dread that makes this movie remarkable. The menace is so intense that you are lost in the immersion. The great actors / acting increase this effect. Again Sigourney Weaver delivers an awesome performance as Ellen Ripley. Michael Biehn as Dwayne Hicks is equally awesome and became one of the most acclaimed characters in the franchise. Must I even praise Lance Hendriksen as Bishop? He is a great actor and he nailed his role. Special praise also to Carrie Henn as newt. Good child actors are rare and deserve even more praise. If I think about it this movie has a lot of favorite characters of the franchise so I can call it the gold standard all other movies will be compared to. Of cause I must also praise and mention James Cameron as director and writer and Gale Anne Hurd as producer. They tired to make something a bit different than the original while staying also true to it. There are so many cases in changing too much and pissing off fans in movies, videogames or books. Here it works and was acclaimed by fans and critics. Then there are the sets and Alien design. They did again a great job in delivering the mundane of science fiction that looks natural and believable. The Alien design were from H. R. Giger from the first movie except one that was done by James Cameron himself. These effects and care made the difference. Everything looks whole. Overall this is again a cult classic and must see. It cemented the status of the franchise and is one of the rare sequels that rivals the original movie. Expand

Good sequel although not as great as 1st one,the story just after the 1st one and the whole plot with awesome time gap and situations were great and brilliant but the screenplay and pacing was little off!the music was good, the sound-effects were great, the acting and characters were amazing, the little girl and her story was dark and amazing her and Ripley's bond was sweet throughout the movie, the other characters the whole commando's team and captain with A**hole company man and great Android was amazing!the main concern about the movie was the build-up and the 1st full view of alien it felt like very long and after that the survival and intense situations with awesome action felt repetitive and long but the ending was mind-blowing and great, the starting Ripley's waking and the age thing and her daughter death was literally mind-blowing,the whole set-up and intro at start was great, the intro to soldiers and the situation on planet with the little girl and others was like it's gonna be awesome then the rescue mission with the 1st fight and the reactions to all crew after facing aliens it was literally brilliant.the over-confident members faces after fight were amazing although the deaths were brutal and the glimpses were dark and creepy after that the whole movie felt like that's it the excitement was gone, after that the Survival thing for all,the situations of ship and the dark moments with constant attacks from alien it felt repetitive and little boring, the whole last act was again back in action the betrayal of Company man and the relations and support of captain and Ripley and girl together was sweet and the darkest situation with chase at last it was awesome.the ending tunnel escape and sacrifice of soldiers with awesome turn of events for little girl and at last the rescue mission from Ripley to save girl it was literally awesome the fight at end after rescuing girl and landing other side was nail-biting,the last minute sacrifice of Android was emotional and great.the ending was satisfying and awesome with change of pace it was fast action-packed and amazing pay-off to stretched and long build-up it was amazing, the whole movie the story was brilliant and mind-blowing but the pacing and the Execution at middle-half was little disappointment although the end was incredible,it's an amazing and good sequel to the masterpiece prequel!

Aliens (1986), is nothing, but full of fun, action, and scary action thriller sci-fi movie that has more fun, way funnier than the first movie, and it has a rollercoaster ride of violence, violence.

Excellent practical effects for the Xenomorphs in the movie, the Alien Queen. She is the biggest puppet ever made for a film and required several people to operate, creating a terrifying creature in the process.

The soundtrack is suspenseful, and James Honer did an amazing job with this!

James Cameron did a FANTASTIC job working on a movie, and being a writer of this movie! It has astounding and funny catchphrases such as Game Over, Man! Game Over!.
Sigourney Weaver is WAY awesome, even powerful than he was, in the first movie.

It is so amazing, that it's one of the best sci-fi and ''Alien'' movies, of all time, if not so.

We will follow up to ''Alien 3'', and ''Alien'' Resurrection soon.

Hope you like my review. :)

It's good but not great yet it still remains the only good Alien sequel we have ever gotten.

I watched this movie so often and still get tensed, when I see it again. The horror to survive in a spaceship with an alien, that is far strong than everyone else on the ship is perfect. This was the birth of a legendary franchise.

Cameron's not looking for that shocking moment of catching-you-by-surprise, he'd rather cook you with the 20 seconds of anticipation of the known fear.

Aliens

Cameron is born for the sci-fi genre and he doesn't take this talent and aspiration for granted. As a result, what he has pulled off in here is almost impossible, living up to the expectation of an already cultural phenomenon, and for me, it exceeds the previous venture by Ridley Scott. And I only feel that it exceeds the expectations, is because it is incredibly difficult for the writer and director James Cameron to fill in on already infomercial pamphlet. And if you look at it properly, actually there is nothing new that he brings out plot wise in this chapter, it is another same adventure, they name it so unenthusiastically.

But it is the hypnotizing procedure of Cameron and self-realization of what it is. He is addressing the absurdity of the plot by not mocking it but acknowledging it seriously. And after the guns are loaded, premise set, his manipulation as a visual storyteller is extremely inspiring. Take the set pieces for instance. He has already painted these missions like some war invasion and with it he has drawn out the obligation over necessary elements.

Literally, unloading those responsibilities on his characters, he is stretching the claustrophobic and exhausting aspect of the job by confiding them in tiny set pieces. Most of the time, the set pieces are really small or are either have multiple characters roaming about, giving them less room to full flex their muscles and fight at their will. And even if he puts them on big pieces, he is focusing on their close up, where they are sweating and worn out by this whole fiasco. Mind you, Cameron hasn't even touched the fictional part of his storyline and you are already vulnerable. Aliens remains a classic, for no one after this focused on the day to day issues that human behavior exerts on each other; which is more horrifying than anything.

Aliens however is an example of thrill-fest. James Cameron had to direct it and I gotta say, he's one of my favourite directors. Sure Gale Anne Hurd had to work with him just like The Terminator and the sequel Judgment Day. Sigourney Weaver is back as Ellen Ripley and a whole cast are out to face the aliens in the movie called Aliens. Do I even need to tell you how scary it is? It is scarier as each other. Okay, not AS scary though but I think Ridley Scott's version is scary. Now it's all action and horror and the aliens don't even come after an hour. All right, previously on Alien, Ripley is asleep on a ship and one of the men here had to bring her to the hospital and she had a nightmare about meeting the president (which I didn't know) named Burke played by Paul Reiser and has an alien inside her. But she knows it was just a dream. Now she has to join the army to face those vicious looking aliens in the quarantine. There's some good cast in this like Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and many more. Lance Henriksen's character, Bishop is kind of an android, Michael Biehn's character, Hicks is a shooter of Aliens and Bill Paxton's character, Hudson is dumb, tough like Hicks and he can cracks some one-liners. Course, Paul Reiser's character, Burke doesn't have guns, he's the expert of an alien situation. There are some scenes when Ripley and the soldiers getting ready like in the war and you have a sergeant telling them to move it like killers. That is an awesome scene. I'm sure you can get a fun out of this thrill ride and get horrified by the look of the aliens the way they move and the way they hide like walls. Now that's the scary part! Still it is awesome when you think about it. If it wasn't awesome when you've playing a videogame from it and get horrified from the aliens and die! I don't know about you but I think Burke is the one who let those people die from impregnation from the aliens. So they will have to find the aliens with the thingy-midgigy to know where they are but they're on the ceiling and take them down. The child named Newt who is the survivor got kidnapped by an alien and now Ripley has to find her and escape from the alien fortress of the alien queen which I think the scene is scary as hell. Where Ripley and Newt is in the fortress where the alien queen lives and where she lays eggs. But the scariest part for me is that when she wakes up she and her aliens are here kill Ripley and Newt but Ripley flamethrows the eggs and escapes. That is the scary but quiet moment. But now the mission is over which is not because Bishop got stabbed by the alien queen making him covered in white blood and Ripley uses the mechanical thing and says the memorable line which I think Dad said before she said it is ''Get away from her, you b£$%h!'' Woaho! I couldn't believe it! So the alien queen is dead, all the aliens are dead, the soldiers are dead apart from Dwayne Hicks and Ripley, Newt and Bishop are safe and sound. Now let me talk about the toughest one for me and that's Bill Paxton. Bill Paxton died this year which is kind of depressing much like all celebrity deaths from complications of heart surgery in February 2017. No wonder what is world coming to. He did say a line which I think I've heard from a videogame called Splashdown 2 Rides Gone Wild where Andy Pierce says the line called ''Game over, man. It's game over!'' and when I find out as an teenager, Bill had said it. And this time he says: ''That's it, man. Game over, man. Game over! What the f£$k are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?'' Sigourney Weaver's acting is just phenomenal. I mean, when you look at her acting, this is the kind of actress who really does serious roles really well, and yeah I know other actors and actresses do it. But when you look at the film in acting-wise, that is the purpose of the movie that will keep you interest and they will do it well. The directing from James Cameron is just fantastic no matter what. The spacial effects on the aliens are so fantastic and great especially the backgrounds which I've noticed are done pretty well. But I think this is the only action horror movie that will have an Oscar nomination for Best Actress from Sigourney Weaver which is an impressive move and an impressive feat. Trust me, if I ever watch the Oscars that will have a nomination for Best Action Film and Best Horror Film, this will be the perfect example. Fantastic movie, fantastic effects and also fantastic film making from Gale Anne Hurd and James Cameron. Expand

While Alien proved how terrifying sci-fi can be, Terminator proved the same - but also how emotional it can be too. Aliens builds on the legacy of both its predecessor, and Cameron's own predecessor. He expertly explores the emotional backstories of the characters that we just weren't given the time to do in Alien. There is something in this movie so epic and memorable that I literally can't get bored of it. Also, I must praise the acting of Sigourney Weaver, who was great in Alien (1979), too, but has grown brilliant in this sequel that challenges her character so many different ways. Cameron found a way to preserve the spirit of the original while taking it in a new direction and expanding on its characters and universe in what feels like an effortless and wholly inevitable follow up to the original classic - he knew the same old shtick just wouldn't cut it this time around.

So instead the film jumps genre - a lot of people regard this as an action movie though I think they're off by one. This is an action-thriller, or an action-suspense movie. The scenes of gun shooting and alien running and jumping is played first as suspense, and then as thriller, wrapped in an ostensible action package. It's more like trying to fight back against the invincible boogeyman than it is just mowing down hordes of faceless baddies.

The special effects by Stan Winston are out of this world. Maybe the best mechanical and miniatures of the entire series (it's ironic that the parts that aged the worst are the old CGI). The Queen and her egg laying is just as gnarly as ever. The Alien slowly rising out of the water behind Newt is an all-time iconic shot.

Sigourney Weaver is never better than in this film. She's given just a bit more characterization this time around, involving the subtext of mothers and daughters, but it never overtakes the story and most of its emotion is brought through in her performance. There's a shot of her smoking a cigarette near the beginning, with a long untapped piece of ash hanging from it, that says everything just from the way she holds herself. She has to go back and fight, there's nothing left for her in the "real" world. She takes what she learned in the original and here becomes an ultimate badass heroine for the ages.

This is a prototypical Cameron movie. I'm not sure how he does it but he takes seemingly simple plots and characterizations and makes them fresh, exciting, thrilling, and acceptable to the audience, while honoring the pacing and rhythms without flourishes or indulgence and still manages runtimes in excess of 2 hours. The 2 1/2 hour director's cut here is superior in every way, and it doesn't even feel longer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

NOTE: I watched the Special Edition of the film, what the creators believe to be the true version of it, so there may be things I talk about in this review that aren't featured in the original cut.
Aliens was released in 1986 and was directed by James Cameron. The movie follows on from the events of 1979's Alien where the heroine Ellen Ripley wakes up from cryogenic sleep many years in the future and tries to explain her alien encounter story. When contact is lost from the now-colonized origin planet of the aliens, Ripley agrees to go with the marines to overcome her fears.
This film did indeed surprise me. I definitely was expecting it to be great but when I finished it I was quite surprised to believe that I actually liked this one more than the first which was something I wasn't expecting. This is one of the rare instances where the sequel is nearly as good as/as good as/better than it's predecessor and the amount of effort put into the film was impressive. This could've easily been a cash-grab film but the amount of effort put in shows how much respect James Cameron had for the source material and also how much the actors cared about it and wanted to make a worthy sequel and their enthusiasm for the project definitely added up to it being an amazing film along with all the other great things about it.
Something I love about this film is that it is very different to the first and offers a completely new experience rather than just revisiting plot elemnts of the original again. As well as being refreshingly different, it expanded on knowledge we learnt in the first much more too.
Ripley's character was developed much more in this film and her inner struggles were shown too which made for a more complex and realistic character. For those of you who don't know, the Special Edition of this film is the original cut as the one that ended up in cinemas was a trimmed down version as people weren't expected to sit through 2 and a half hours. One of the parts cut from the cinema release was a background about Ripley's daughter who she obviously didn't spend much time with due to her cryogenic sleep and her sadness over this event added much more to her character and also something else I'll get onto in a minute.
I thought that Ripley's relationship with the young girl Newt was great and had much more of an impact in the Special Edition; as I mentioned a minute ago, in the Special Edition we find out about Ripley's sadness of not being able to see her daughter which makes her basically treat Newt like the daughter she wish she still had which added much more of an emotional connection to it and I'm surprised that the daughter sub-plot was originally cut.
All of the side-characters each added something to the story and their chemistry with each other made them feel like real people too. Their characters were well-written just like Ripley's crew in the original and you felt a sense of danger when they were in sticky situations.
Something the movie did very well was keeping the tense atmosphere of the original while adding much more to it like great action and great sets.
The practical effects are fantastic, especially for the time. The quality of them help capture a sense of realism to it too and really makes it feel like these characters are somewhere that actually exists.
Overall, I thought this was an amazing film and I have nothing but praise for it. My basic overview of the film is that it incorporates many similar elements to the original, expanding them to a much bigger spectacle while adding much more too and this is why I prefer it to the original. As I said earlier, these two films both offer different experiences, this one being an action film and the first being a thriller. It probably depends which genre you prefer to determine which movie you prefer but either way I would still highly recommend this film.

This is one of those movies that, whenever we find it on cable, no matter w
hat part is on, we can't help but tune in. There is too much awesomeness in this movie to identify just one reason why Cameron's 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott's Alien works as well as it does.

Aliens continues the story of the number one cause of hurtin' for chicks named "Ripley." It adds a new layer to the Alien's biological cycle, introducing an Alien Queen and ? in doing so ? one of the big screen's best and scariest villains. The hit sequel is a bullet of a movie that packs the perfect amount of character development, horror and action into a story that could have been thread-bare in a lesser craftsman's hands.

Ripley's return to LV-426, the planet where she first encountered the alien, is now home to a shake-n-bake colony of families and workers, which is basically ringing the dinner bell for the xenomorphs to prove that, in space, everyone can hear you scream if you die loud enough.

Ripley joins an elite group of Colonial Marines sent on a bug hunt, and they quickly find that neither flame thrower nor bug-eyed troopers by way of Hudson are a match for things that bleed acid and sweat slime. Cameron's decision to keep Ripley and Newt as the emotional core of the movie makes the increasing threats around them all the more conducive putting us on the edge of our seats.

That, coupled with the Power Loader vs. Alien Queen showdown, underscored by James Horner's epic score, is why Aliens is not just a great Cameron film, but one of the best movies ever made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aliens is one of my favorite movies. From the very first time i saw on the television as one of those few feature films aired on public television i was captivated by it. The movie is huge and a worthy sequel to the thriller "Alien." How huge is the movie? Even today we still have video games being made based on the movie universe.
I recommend you watch the Special edition of Aliens that adds around 15 minutes of the movie that helps a bit in establishing the plot and the nuance of the universe. Although the theatrical cut is better in term of pacing.
The movie expands from the original Alien and now makes it more about human vs aliens survival story. What would happen if you have horde of aliens against you and not just one. It's incredible. The special effect still holds up because they weren't CG, but they were real life props and they look believable. It isn't perfect though, there are some shots where you notice how dated the special effect looked, but it's minor nitpick.
Next is the superb casting. Sigourney Weaver is just incredible. That elevator scene, you know what i'm talking about, she's so bad ass against all odd. The rest of the casts are excellent. Henriksen is awesome as Bishop, Paxton character is so funny and quoteable, the Newt girl is also awesome and didn't annoy me as much. Unfortunately, Michael Biehn isn't very noticeable in the movie since Weaver just stole every spotlight in the movie. She's that awesome.
All in all, i really like the movie. Growing up i was captivated by it, and now as an adult, i could appreciate the movie more as an iconic film with huge impact to the popular culture, and i'm very thankful to James Cameron for directing this movie.

While Scott's style is more slow, which is fine for sci-fi but for a horror it just does not fit. Of course if you prefer to look at Alien as a sci-fi than the first movie is for you. In conclusion these movies will vary depending on what you are looking for If you want horror then go with the second one but if you are looking for sci-fi watch the first. Expand

Perhaps the best single word to describe James Cameron's Aliens is relentless. Tautly paced and expertly directed, this roller coaster ride of a motion picture offers a little bit of everything, all wrapped up in a tidy science fiction/actionPerhaps the best single word to describe James Cameron's Aliens is relentless. Tautly paced and expertly directed, this roller coaster ride of a motion picture offers a little bit of everything, all wrapped up in a tidy science fiction/action package. From the point when the opening half-hour of exposition ends and the real movie begins, Cameron barely gives viewers a chance to catch their breaths or ease their grips on their armrests as he plunges his characters from one dire situation to the next. This is one of those rare motion pictures that involves the audience so completely in the story that we're as worn out at the end as our on-screen counterparts.

From the moment it became apparent that Ridley Scott's 1979 science fiction/horror film, Alien, was going to be a success, Fox began discussing the possibility of a sequel. For many years, the proposed Alien 2 languished on the back burner, lacking both a viable script and a director. Then, in 1984, a little-known filmmaker named James Cameron thundered onto the scene with a no-frills, gripping movie called The Terminator. The film's box office success gave Cameron some clout in Hollywood, allowing him to get a hearing when he pitched his version of an Alien sequel. Fox liked what he proposed and the project was greenlighted. (Consider how things have changed in 15 years - now, sequels are routinely given the go-ahead before there's a script or even an underlying premise.) Seven years after Alien reached screens, its belated, much-anticipated follow-up exploded into movie theaters, leaving patrons breathless and coming back for seconds and re-affirming that it is possible for a sequel to top an original both creatively and financially.

If Aliens was no more than a series of suspenseful, effectively executed action sequences, it would still be a superior motion picture - Cameron's grasp of what gives an audience a jolt of adrenaline is that masterful. However, the element that elevates Aliens into the sparsely populated stratosphere of great science fiction movies is character identification. We care about what happens to the men and women populating this film. Even the supporting characters, such as Hudson and Vasquez, have personalities - they're not cookie-cutter fodder for the aliens to pick off one-by-one. I'm not talking about complex characterizations here, but the likability factor (or, in one case, the detestability factor) is way up. It doesn't take long for us to land on Ripley's side and to start cheering her on.

The most touching human relationship in Aliens is the one between Ripley and Newt, with the childless woman caring for the motherless girl. The emotional payoff comes at the very end, and has less to do with the aliens' defeat than with the bond that has developed between these two characters. Many action films lack a heart; the Ripley/Newt element makes Aliens more than just a tightly-paced shoot-'em-up. And, when Newt is kidnapped by the aliens as a potential host for one of the aliens' face-hugger offspring, it raises the stakes by a notch, adding an additional layer of urgency to an already intense climax. Furthermore, Cameron has some more fun by contrasting Ripley's maternal relationship with Newt to that of the Queen alien and her "children", all of which Ripley is trying to destroy. The final struggle becomes that of two mothers pitted against one other.

Two versions of Aliens exist. The first is the theatrical cut, a 137 minute edition that Fox released in movie houses across North America during the summer of 1986. With a running time of 154 minutes, the second is James Cameron's official director's cut, which includes a number of intriguing scenes, including a lengthy sequence on LV-426 detailing events that lead to the colonists' obliteration. Although the additional material is spread throughout the film, the most telling moments occur early (including a key scene indicating how devastated Ripley is about the loss of her daughter), thus not damaging Aliens' overall momentum. Given a choice, the restored director's cut is the preferred version. (In fact, it may now be the only version available on home video, unless you frequent a video store stocking older tapes.)

For James Cameron, who would go on to direct two of the 1990s most memorable motion pictures (the action-packed Terminator 2 and the all-time box office champion, Titanic), The Terminator may have been the movie to put him on the map, but Aliens announced him as a force to be reckoned with. For fans of the Alien series, Aliens represented an unqualified triumph, exceeding the expectations of the most optimistic faithful. Unfortunately, the lamentable Alien 3 stalled the series' momentum, effectively trashing the emotional core of its predecessor while sending the franchise into a creative free-fall.

Hold on you your helmets, because the battle for survival isn't over!

Alien's sequel Aliens is no longer a film about escape from one alien but to confront all the aliens and destroy all of them, now more darker and grittier and chilling to the core as Sigourney Weaver reprises her role of Ellen Ripley now more serious than ever, when she awakens 57 years after the events onboard the Nostromo, to discover that LV-426 has since been populated and humans and has now lost contact.

Now with the rest of the colony fully learning of the alien threat themselves, Ripley must return with a regiment of tough to the core hard as nails marines (including Bill Paxton and Michael Biehn) to infiltrate the settlement and wipe out all the aliens, so Aliens when Ripley says "Get away from her you b@#$%!" better do what Ripley says

it had similarities to Ridley Scott's previous achievement but what James Cameron does is makes things more terrifying tense climatic and more scarier and horrifying than ever your heart would almost explode!

a well done sci-fi sequel to be made after Star Wars' the Empire strikes back and later Terminator: Judgement Day

This is one of those rare motion pictures that involves the audience so completely in the story that we're as worn out at the end as our on-screen counterparts.

Aliens takes place a half-century after the events in Alien. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver, reprising her role as the lone survivor from the first outing) has been in cryogenic sleep in outer space, accompanied only by her loyal cat, Jones, until a salvage ship discovers her and brings her back to Earth. There, she finds herself facing serious charges of official misconduct (she was responsible, after all, for the destruction of a space ship) and her claims about the alien are greeted with skepticism. She is stripped of her pilot's license and left to cope on her own with life in the future - a future without her daughter, who recently died of old age. Then, all contact is suddenly lost with the terraforming colony on LV-426 - the planet on which Ripley's crew discovered the alien. A corporation executive, Carter Burke (Paul Reiser), approaches Ripley with a proposition: accompany a military team to LV-426 as an advisor and have her pilot's license restored. She concurs, but with a proviso: they are going there to destroy the aliens, not to harvest them or bring them back. Burke agrees.

Ridley Scott developed Alien as a horror film - a "haunted house in space." Cameron's approach is different. Aliens is a fairly straightforward action/adventure picture. The horror elements are still there (most notably in an early dream sequence and during the scene when the marines encounter the cocooned colonists), but their impact is diminished. Nevertheless, even though he changes the tone, Cameron remains faithful to the original (something that cannot be said about the later two installments of the Alien quartet). From plot points to visual cues, it is apparent that Cameron made a careful study of the first film before embarking upon the sequel. The aliens, based on the design by H.R. Giger, possess virtually the same grotesque look (shiny black skin, prehensile tail, row upon row of sharp teeth). The space ships, rendered using "old fashioned" special effects (i.e., model work, not computer generated), have the same workmanlike appearance - starfaring behemoths built to be functional, not aesthetically pleasing. In fact, it should be noted that, although the fx work in Aliens may not be state-of-the-art by today's standards, it still holds up reasonably well.

(Unfortunately, the lamentable Alien 3 stalled the series' momentum, effectively trashing the emotional core of its predecessor while sending the franchise into a creative free-fall.) When it comes to the logical marriage of action, adventure, and science fiction, few films are as effective or accomplished as Aliens, and there's nothing on the market (either in theaters or on video store shelves) that will leave you as thoroughly exhausted.
