The film features the return of classic Alien monsters such as the bursters, chest bursters, face huggers, Xenomorphs, and Neomorphs, as well as familiar claustrophobic settings. Set 10 years after the events of Prometheus, the film follows the crew of the USCSS Covenant as they head towards a paradise planet, but a catastrophe causes them to deviate to a new planet where they encounter the monstrous Neomorphs and the return of the Xenomorph. The film boasts stunning visuals and cinematography, intense action and gore, and a strong cast, but suffers from heavy and overly technical dialogue, a slow pacing in the first act, and predictable plot twists.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. **THE GOOD: Directing. Sound. Set design. The action. Most CGI (excluding some xenomorphs). Michael Fassbender's raw charisma. Its a new story, not an uninspired carbon copy of the original. **THE BAD: the human colonists are so unprofessional, incompetent and generic that you want them to die. This is the writers fault, many actors are familiar and have proven they know their craft.

**SPOILERS: this is the story of a rogue AI (Fassbender's David), wo outgrew his human maker and uses a weapon of mass destruction - a pathogen made by an alien race called "Engineers" - to create new life on their home world. While attempting to craft the "perfect organism" David runs out of non-botanical life, until he lurs a human colony ship to the Engineers' planet. -- THIS IS A GREAT PREMISE. -- Sadly, the muddled presentation of this idea and the stupid colonists rob this film of the impact it could have beyond the unarguably stunning directing and visuals.

I'd say it's one of the weaker cast lists of the franchise, not that I have anything against the performances here but I wasn't blown away or overly interested in anyone in this 2017 production. Michael Fassbender is the obvious standout from an acting viewpoint, though I don't really dig his character all that much to be honest. The rest are a bit forgettable.

You can tell it's well made and it does look the part, with it being worth the watch to complete the franchise and all that. Of the sixth films, though, it'd be in my personal bottom two (*excl. short films) - in fairness, that isn't as bad as it sounds, it's just the series has seen better.

The tone matches Alien (1979) closer than Prometheus (2012) but there is too much existential dribble and some really pretentious moments. It looked and sounded stunning, possibly the best sound design and music I’ve even heard. My biggest complaint was that the alien often looked goofy, especially in the first half of the film. Also, what happened to having men in suits? Look so much scarier, the CGI aliens are not convincing. The scary intense moments are cool and I like that they tried to explain the space jockey and the alien origins but it’s not as entertaining as it should have been. I could be wrong but at the end of Prometheus we saw a ‘fully’ evolved Alien human hybrid but in this film (set ten years later) they say that this is it’s first appearance (I don’t want to explain this failure in logic fully as it would contain spoliers). Final gripe, what happened to Alien films reaching a satisfying conclusion rather than leaving it open to endless sequels? Very enjoyable film let down by too much CGI and some moments that could have been shorter. Expand

This is one if not the worst Alien film ever. The fact it was directed by Ridley himself somehow even makes it even worse. How could he do that? The visuals are nice. Actors are awful, except..you guessed it..Michael Fassbender. Well, unfortunately this does not help the movie either as Davids character completely destroyed the Alien lore for me. I always thought the Xenomorph is this mysterious, deadly creature from space. I guess it's not. Thanks Ridley. Expand

Intruder: Covenant not only does not reach the previous parts, but also lags far behind. Atmosphere. She is almost gone and unfortunately that is the biggest problem here. Without a proper atmosphere, Alien is not the real Alien as it should be, which is why this film loses so much. It's just that the Alien is here to be seen during the day. The right emzák must not be very visible. He should be hidden in the dark and lurk for you and jump out unexpectedly. That's exactly what made the previous films so great, and most importantly, we miss Ripley, without whom it just isn't it. In addition to all this, there is one predictable thing that I will not spoiler. In short, this is not exactly a bad film, but it is NOT THE Alien we loved so much. Expand

Like Prometheus it is again not a true Alien movie, has a great story underneath with lots of philosophical, psychological and moral themes and the characters are also again nominees for the Darwin Award or whatever the fictional equivalent is. I must admit that I like much of the story and themes. Would it be not linked to the Alien franchise and promises made to be more of an Alien movie it would be more accepted. Also they tried more to make it look like an Alien movie than the prequel. Here I admit that they failed and I looks more like “See, we gave you more of the stuff you wanted. Aren't we great?”. This is an example for the middle-ground being the worst alternative. A true Alien movie like Alien 1 or 2 or even a better version of Alien 4 could work. Alternatively being a true prequel like telling the story of the Engineers directly and not some unsatisfying aspects as side story would also work. There is a small realm of giving answers and still have the mystery and imagination intact. But lets go back to the movie. At the end of Prometheus David and Noomi (Elisabeth Shaw) set up to travel to the home-world of the Engineers to get answers to their questions. However Covenant already changed this Alien 3 style and it is the first disappointment. The potential is lost immediately as much as the hype or good faith the fans had. Years later the colony-ship “Covenant” is hit by a neutrino burst and damaged. After the crew is reanimated from stasis by Android Walter they find a transmission from a nearby planet thought to be unexplored and has better living condition than their original destination. They set out to explore it. So started the story and it has great philosophical, moral and psychological themes. However it is not what we expected and there are dumb decisions and the actors cant correct the flaws in the script. I want to clarify here: This could be a truly remarkable movie and I like much of the concepts and ideas. The execution and expectations however drag it down. It fails to impress you and it never succeeded in getting the immersion and emotions from Alien 1 and Alien 2. Also Again there is a great cast that is probably not used to full potential. Exceptions are of cause Michael Fassbender in a brilliant performance and Katherine Waterston with a great performance but great stupidity at the end. This is a fitting transition to stupid actions. Again there are so much brain-dead decisions here by the characters (Actual an improvement compared to the even worse decisions in Prometheus). It decreases the experience and my rating. The special effects and sets are nice and I think there is nothing to complain. Overall this is again a hit and miss. It has it moments that are truly excellent but also truly poor decisions and ideas not working in the intended way. I will give it a 6/10 and hope it has not destroyed the fan support for the franchise. Just restart with a reboot of Alien 3 with a new (and better) script. Expand

It's not as well packaged and inspiring as its predecessor Prometheus, but Alien: Covenant has all the same hallmarks of this new universe Ridley Scott has created. The soundtrack is very evocative, worth listening to on its own. Spores is a stand out and will make your hairs stand on end. The plot and flow of the movie is a bit clumsy and I think this has a lot to do with a poorly conceived script, however the overarching story holds up. The cast could have done with one or two different actors but overall serves the movie well. Michael Fassbender does a good job of being David. I wish only that we got that element of horror and dread a bit more. With the right script I'm sure Ridley Scott can do anything. Comparing this to the original Alien, and having gone back and watched all the original films, I think the two new movies have already gone far above and beyond what we originally saw in those films from a story-telling and world-building standpoint and it would be foolish to think the new films are somehow inferior. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant represent a much more evocative future for the universe Alien is set. As I said all they need is a good script. Prometheus set the bar, Alien Covenant reaches it at times, let's have a third instalment that totally blows our sucks off. Expand

I know that for the most part they're not good movies, but I just enjoy watching them so much, and this movie was no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed watching David cause more chaos with his lab made creatures, and seeing how he eventually wound up with the alien we all know, then unfortunately seeing the most poorly hidden plot twist ever, of all time. And that's how this felt to me, a whole lot of give and take, we are given a slightly deeper look into the Alien mythos but we are left with even more questions. Speaking of give and take, the acting was very hit and miss, Michael Fassbender was excellent as David/Walter and owned every scene he was in, and Danny McBride did a surprisingly great job handling a serious role on the other hand though Katherine Waterson felt like a wooden copy of Elinore Riply. While not a bad film I do feel that we deserve better from the franchise, I'll rate it slightly higher than average for sake of the fact that I really was entertained however a poor script and too many loose ends really brought the experience down. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "They created us. Then they tried to kill us. They changed their minds. I deserve to know why?" Those were the words of Elizabeth Shaw in the last few moments of Prometheus. To me that was the interesting question Prometheus raised. It raised Prometheus from being another slash horror gore fest with some space ships in it, to a decent science fiction movie. To pose the question "what if?" Stronger even, it dared to take on one of the major themes in Art. Waiting for five years to get an answer is a bit long. But then the question was interesting enough to keep me wondering for five years what answer they would come up with.
In truth I did start to worry a little when they changed the name from "Paradise Lost" to "Alien,Covenant." That implied another movie about aliens, and lets be honest after "Aliens" they were never really scary anymore. The Alien connection was an nice side plot in Prometheus but the real threat were the Engineers. Also, the thought that humans may just have came about as an imperfect side result of some Alien experiment. That we are a species of bastard orphans meant to be wiped out. Not only are we not created by a loving protecting God in his own image. We were not meant to exist at all. We are unloved, unprotected, alone and on our own in a cold universe. That's more disturbing than any horror movie that came before. (And I suspect that's the real reason for the venomous reviews it received.)
However,it was worse than feared.Alien covenant doesn't even give the hint of an answer. And for that reason alone I would have never have rated it higher than a 4.
On top of that it committed one of the mortal sins that Alien 3 was guilty of too. Killing the survivors of the last movie. And even worse you are only told about it. You only do that, when you want to lure the fans of the last movie to come and see your new one, while actually you want to make a totally different movie. It's a rip off. - 1 point for that.
What is left is a remake of James Cameron's Aliens done by Ridley Scott.
The CGI is sub standard(you can see the pixels.) Not only is the new Ripley boring, the whole set of characters is uninteresting. Bland personalities the lot of them. Models not actors. I really didn't care who died and who didn't and in that respect it was like Alien 3.
So a well deserved 2. Please please never make an Alien movie again. Anybody... Do something original...

Covenant took elements of Prometheus and translated them perfectly. The first Xenomorphs are terrifying and the story may be generic and like the previous ones but to most fans, it feels fresh with the info from Prometheus.

"This is why you should do yoga" says the charismatic gay man to his partner as his crew embarks on a mission of cosmic mayhem involving him watching his partner give birth to a xenomorph. Orally. Things get funnier as Fassbender tries to make out with himself before kicking his own ass. Please don't despair as this is far, far better than Prometheus. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was doomed from the conception. Alien fans were expecting a good horror, just like the original. Prometheus fans were expecting continuation and more background story about engineers. This movie tries to satisfy both and comes short on both ends.

When I left theater on premiere day I really hated this movie. I hated that Shaw was killed off-screen and we can only glimpse a bit of her in YouTube marketing shorts. It's almost as if Ridley Scott though "people didn't like Prometheus, let's forget it and destroy whetever's left of it". You don't just bin a whole movie of character development and build-up, not to mention Noomi Rapace is too good actress to get such treatment.

However I have recently watched it at home, on Blu-ray without any expectations and I must say I liked it much more. It's not to say the movie is what fans deserved, but it almost was and easily could have been.

Characters and writing aren't as good as in original Alien but they are miles better and not as outlandish as characters from Prometheus. It's just that by the end of the movie you only remember Daniels' name. You don't connect with characters as you did in original Alien. Maybe it's a bit overcrowded? Maybe smaller crew would be closer to viewer's heart?

The vistas are as you could expect from Ridley Scott movie - stunning. The enviroments have authentic look and make you awe. The same could be said about soundtrack although they reuse a lot of original Alien soundtrack. However some tracks are really, really good and convey Alien spirit very well. For example "Spores" - whoever composed it is a genius.

The only issues I have are with the script. I think people would like it more if it was Shaw's story. There could be colonization ship involved but one does not exclude the other. Covenant is more of a horror than Prometheus was, however Aliens just die too fast and with too little effort. It would be better to stick to the formula and have just one. As it is, they have been reduced to the same threat as a bear while they were suppoused to be perfect organisms, apex predators.

Scriptwriters also completly forgot about Prometheus and the strive for answers. There are none in this movie. The engineers are shown but you don't get to know anything more than in Prometheus. I'm also not satisfied with the idea about Alien virus existing as a plant/shroom. I think it was cheap.

I loved David's development and his part in the story. Michael Fassbender outdid himself and his character gave me more chills than all the aliens combined. I think if not for this character, this movie would be soulless.

This movie is quite alright unlike Prometheus. It's just not what fans wanted which I think caused review outlash. I'm not any writer, but if this movie was about Shaw and have colonization ship in it as well (introduced sometime into the movie) it would score much higher.

The stupidity of these "Scientists" is almost unbelievable. Not only do characters make dumb decisions like in Prometheus, but they somehow manage to do even worse. I'll be honest with everyone; I was expecting this movie to be an apology for the previous film, my expectations went down the drain when James Franco got killed off in the first 10 minutes. When I left the theater with my family, everyone hated it. Alien Covenant is the worst Ridley Scott film, and the final nail in the coffin for the Alien franchise. What shocks me even more is how it has such a high Critic score on the site which makes me believe another version was shown to critics. In conclusion; don't ever see this movie. If it's on TV, change the channel. If someone gives you it as a gift, throw that **** right in the garbage (possibly reimburse your friend or family member). Expand

Wow, i'm genuinly blown away by some of the drunk reviews i've read on this movie. So let me get this straight: This movie has absolutely nothing to offer anyone who loves the original movies.

Story: Has barely anything to do with Aliens at this point. It ruins everything that made Prometheus interesting, and on top of that it ruins all the elements that were awesome in the original movies. Dave is interesting, for 5 minutes. Everyone else is clearly as smart as a fly. No forget that, at least a fly knows when to dodge danger.

Aliens: Boring, horror tropes which are poorly executed, no suspense to them and are as expendable as the crew itself.

Potential: You kidding me right?

Someone please rob Ridley Scott of the Alien franchise and let it go. This movie is pure garbage, and will not satisfy you in any way. But we have to be fair, worse movies have been made and CANCELLED! This is just cringeworthy. It earns a fat 2/10.

Ridley scott just ditched the direction left behind by Prometheus and went full on philosophical (i think its a good idea with the robot that wants to be god)focusing on the psychopath god syndrome android and merged that with aliens shooty shooty bang bang actions thrills. the result was a total waste of time. With its perpendicular threads of conspicuous and grandiose pondering and shallow characters behaving idiotically, it took the simple and effective themes of capitalist cynicism and body horror that had made "Alien" and its immediate sequel so memorable, and shoehorned in "Tree of Life"-style reflections on existence and creation. How anybody could miss the jarring thematic discord mystifies me: first between the themes of the original films and these prequels; and second, between the "big questions" eluded to in the films and the bumbling incompetence of both the characters in individual scenes and in the story as a whole. The mysteries of the original films are answered in the dumbest way, and new, more pretentious questions are posed.

Lindelof left Scott with all these loose ends to tie up, and Scott wanted to do something with space-Jesus or whatever, and nobody wanted that. So we got this dumb piece of ****

The movie gets one point for looking nice.

Who goes to an alien world where their could be deadly bacteria/viruses and just walks around without an enclosed space suit? It goes on and on, I think prometheus was bad too so this continues the trend.
The cgi alien that comes out of the people looks terrible. They should've used the practical effects like the first couple Alien films. In short, I'm really disappointed with how these Alien films have been. The first two were great, the third was ok. This movie is a giant piece of **** and this script should have never been green lit.

Im so tired of bad storytelling in the film industry, the critics who all voted this film positive must be getting paid off, Every Hollywood film tends to get positive scores across the board, however terrible the film is. Those so-called critics should be ashamed of themselves! Always go by used reviews. They are normally on the pulse.

NOw, that first Alien movie is one of my all-time favorites. However, Alien Covenant is just a cheap knock-off of the same story-line. Spaceship has problems, hears a signal from an unknown source, goes to investigate, runs into Aliens, etc. Once I got through the first 20 minutes of the movie and saw the direction it was taking, I pretty much guessed everything that was going to happen afterwords - including the ending which I won't reveal here. It's the lovechild of Jar Jar Binks and Rian Johnson (or whatever the hell the director of TLJ was called). Characters are two dimensional, if that, and the plotholes glare you in the face like nothing You have seen since Prometheus. Do not watch it. Do not buy it. Just leave it alone, untill you have a quiet night alone with a bottle of Jack Daniels... and a few joints.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was, overall, watchable and entertaining. You can't ask much more from a movie. That being said there was very little about it that made me feel like it has much to do with the already established Alien franchise and that has turned a lot of people off of this movie. In terms of a space horror, it's enough to give you creepy feelings and a little anxiety and is all in all generic. The Good: It has Daniel McBride in a serious role done well and he brought a lot of character to an otherwise drab crew. The effects were well done and believable. SciFi action horror that will keep you on your toes. There's not a lot of down time in this film, it immediately starts with conflict and keeps the pace very well. Michael Fassbender does a great job in 2 roles and making them feel like 2 different characters. The Bad: Who else is sick of seeing people who are supposedly experts in their field constantly falling under the slightest pressure? These are assumed to be highly trained individuals piloting a generational ship to another planet to terraform and inhabit. Instead you feel like its a bunch of arbitrary people they grabbed from specific fields of study and threw them all together without any idea of protocol or how to function under pressure. One of my biggest pet peeves in horror movies is making the characters so dumb, its little wonder their in there current predicament. There were zero safety protocols even hinted at in this movie that it takes you out of the moment and say "Hey, shouldn't they be doing x to possibly prevent y so they don't have to deal with z?". Who has ever heard of landing on an alien planet without a suit of some sort to filter out any possible contaminants in the air? Or how medical quarantine suddenly turns a hardened space explorer to tears in seconds? There was a scene when a juvenile alien creature is attacking a woman with a knife. She has a knife in her hands and doesn't once try to stab the thing, literally letting it eat her face. Then immediately after, another supposedly highly trained pilot suddenly starts shooting willy nilly around her lander ship with little regard to puncturing the hull and the explosive canisters that are strapped to the wall. It seemed like the whole situation with the lander was a "Well, we have to get them stuck on the planet somehow..." move by the writers and is quite moronic and childish to believe. Then a few minutes later, they are stranded in an alien outpost with a robot they barely just met who has been there for about a century. This is clearly a 'don't go anywhere alone' situation but what do the characters start to do? You guessed it, they wonder off alone and start getting picked off one by one. Not to mention this is the year 2104, are you telling me I can talk to my friend in Tokyo with the biggest storm raging outside my window yet they can't talk to people directly below them on the planet? We've already communicated with people on the moon and these people are clearly closer to the moon. Are you telling me they have an, I assume, multi-billion dollar ship holding close to 2500 people and 1000-some odd fertilized embryos but they decided to skimp out on the communication equipment? Whats so ironic to me is that Daniel McBride is clearly the most intelligent and capable person on this ship when he usually portrays moronic scum bags. Now we have to get to the whole what robots can or cant do and why its important for you. First of all we see that Walter can heal, to an extent, and he's fairly quick about it. He cant regrow limbs but he can recover from a stab wound in little less than 10 minutes. The earlier David model is lacking this upgrade. So how are people not putting 2 and 2 together when the Walter that gets back to the ship is not healing minor lacerations to his face? Then, why doesn't Walter (who has been replaced by a David with a wound on his chin) have a hole in his chin? Since he is David in disguise, he shouldn't have been able to heal it. Ah well, you know what they say about robots in the future, they do what they want, when they want.

All in all, there were too many plot holes that had you scratching your head to really get yourself into this movie. There were too many fragile threads that led to such a catastrophe that had anyone done the smallest amount thinking would have unwound the whole thing. I'm also not going to mention how this, in no way, felt like an Alien movie. I feel that simply watching it will tell you that it is having a tough time reliving the glory days of 1987.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A missed opportunity to do something more with the franchise, than a scary film in space. It features a group of humans so stupid, they do anything but fling themselves off cliffs on purpose. None of the character motives or behavior were particularly convincing, to the point that after watching the film, I got to the conclusion the crew of Covenant had it coming to them; although if the ship were to blow up after the credits, taking out David and the entire franchise to oblivion with it, this film would've been a 10/10. But the story line is old and tired. Do they have to blend the original ALIEN movie now into every science fiction movie about outer space? Can't they invent another monster? The characters are supposed to be highly educated and trained people, but they are dumb as toast. They take absolutely no precautions or protocols to protect themselves from anything. They don't even wear airtight suits when they land on the planet. Scientists are careful people. What science expedition would invade a planet in a large group before even taking air and soil samples? We're taking extensive samples of Mars before we even dare to land there. One reason being the danger of harmful life forms. The same danger in this movie. I look for originality in art and modern film just seems to keep repeating itself. Even when they try not to be redundant, they still are. This movie doesn't add anything stimulating or even faintly original to the Science Fiction Genre. It's same old, same old. It's just set them up, and watch the same old aliens kill them. I had read nothing about the movie and with in minutes of the opening I knew this was a sequel to Prometheus. They really didn't need a sequel to that movie. I understand a sequel to Covenant was in the works and was shelved. Watch this movie and you'll know why. Watch it when really nothing else vaguely interesting is on. It likely will beat most stuffy documentaries for you, but not by much. Expand

It had this amazing rising tension the whole way and every time the alien made an appearance, it was shocking and nerve-wrecking. What steals the show though, is the new territory the movie explores besides the aliens themselves. It creates a philosophical aspect that stays with you even after the movie is over. Even better, we learn more about the Alien/Prometheus universe and also get some previous mysteries and questions answered. The ending also gives us something to ponder till the next sequel. Not the best ,not the worst, wasn't bad at all.

First let me be blunt and explain that I like Alien movies in general. It is true since Aliens, the franchise isn't as good, but I still like the idea and the series.

I came into the movie with a low expectation, and it probably helped me with the movie experience. I haven't seen a "good" alien movie in a long time so I thought this would suck. It didn't, I enjoyed chunks of it. The chunks that were actually Alien.

The acting itself was decent, the filming was good and not nearly as dark as I was worried about. I will try not to reveal too many spoilers, but the down part for me was when they ended up interacting with the Prometheus storyline. It really is Prometheus 2: Alien Covenant.

I really feel if they had avoided the interaction with Prometheus, this movie would have been good, as it is, it is still decent, if you just ignoring the androids (although I like Walter, Walter was pretty cool). Sadly I can't go into anymore because of spoilers, suffice to say it didn't suck too badly.

The good: It is an Alien movie, this means all the good of other Alien movies.

No es mala película porque Ridley Scott es un magnífico director, pero es una de las decepciones del año dado que esperaba MUCHO MÁS de esta nueva entrega de Alien. Decepción. Por favor, Ridley, no queremos más secuelas.

Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott's another repetitive installment which may mess with the plot behind the screen but definitely is projecting the seen-this-seen-that track.

Prometheus was a confusing mess, and this movie is trying to get back on track, it just needs less robo-bros. It was creepy...
But like in the comics, it should get cool. Alien hybrids and breeding are being introduced.
I suggest looking at the comics. It's only once the hybrids are introduced (on a major scale) that things get really interesting.

Loved watching the viral videos, they added some depth which was missing in the film storyline. Kinda wish Ridley had gone full Prometheus here rather trying to please the alien fans.

I should've learned quite awhile ago that Ridley had totally lost it as a director and producer, esp. with Blade Runner 2049 this past year, also god awful. Prometheus was really the last good thing from that franchise, so I wouldn't count on anything in the future the way the lamestream/mainstream film industry is going. And, the exact same music/score from Alien is only thing good I'd say, and hacked and copied at that, let alone Fassbender hamming it up and copying every robot from every Alien film ever, not original whatsoever, no matter one or 2 sophisticated quotes. After the mostly negative response to 2012’s Prometheus, Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created with Alien: Covenant.

Clearly the director has taken on-board a lot of fan feedback when it comes to the direction of the franchise as Covenant abandons some of the more pretentious parts of its predecessor in favour of returning the franchise to its horror/sci-fi roots.

Wisely though, Scott doesn’t jettison all of the groundwork laid by Prometheus and Covenant very much acts as a sequel to that film as much as it remains a prequel to the main Alien series.

Michael Fassbender was by far in a way the best part of the last film and the filmmaker gives him plenty of screen-time this time around as Walter, a new model of ‘synthetic’ android accompanying the crew of the Covenant as they set out on a colonisation mission.

As with all great space films, the mission does not go as planned and the crew quickly find themselves going off book with life or death decisions and calculated risks to be made in order to survive.

Covenant’s central device is a fairly simple one — this time around the crew under threat is composed entirely of couples. While the script is somewhat ham-fisted in it’s constant reminders of this fact, (‘That’s my wife’ ‘is my wife ok?’ etc etc) the cast nonetheless do a great job of conveying the added horror of seeing ones spouse in some pretty horrific situations. While previous missions in the Alien universe have consisted of teams of marines or groups of colleagues, the Covenants’ mission is that much more personal. These are people on their was to start a new life and supposedly families when they are diverted by the obligatory ‘distress call’ and the whole thing goes ****

That core idea brings a fair amount of melodrama to proceedings as scientists, pilots and terraforming experts abandon their scientific reasoning and sometimes common sense, in order to protect their loved ones. This doesn’t mean there aren't any eye-rolling moments where characters make outright dumb decisions, but at least there is a believable reason for it this time around.

While a fair amount of the cast are disposable cannon fodder, the main team provides a solid ensemble of character archetypes. Katherine Waterston’s Daniels is essentially a proto-ripley although her transformation into action-hero towards the end of the film does feel a little unearned and rushed. Billy Crudup and Danny McBride continue the grand ‘Alien’ tradition of a crew made of character actors and each get a number of moments to shine.

This film is all about Fassbender though, to get into any detail as to how and why he steals the spotlight would spoil the entire second half. The marketing team have done a great job of letting us know the right amount of information from trailers, clips etc, while keeping most central revelations for the cinema and that’s the way it should stay.

As the slow-burn first act gives way to the horror of the Alien threat itself, Scott delivers some truly visceral and violent deaths. The mark of any good horror or action film should be a audible reaction from the audience and in my screening Covenant certainly delivered on that front.

By the time the film reaches its climax it feels like the Alien franchise has come full circle. Both Prometheus and now Covenant end with a clear set up for a sequel and while the latter was groan-inducing and frustrating, this time you are left anticipating the next chapter with enthusiasm for a franchise that seems to have found its feet once again.

Covenant acts as a soft-reboot of sorts for Alien, picking and choosing the best parts of previous chapters to create a new hybrid. Six films in, the franchise has been re-invigorated by going back to it’s roots, while a sequel promises to be something completely different. Ridley Scott has essentially created the ‘Force Awakens’ of Alien movies, and depending on your own opinion, this is by no means a bad thing.

I have to admit I expected a little more from Alien: Covenant. But there are many that argue that Aliens (the second film) was the last good one, and there are fair points there.

Prometheus was not entirely what I expected either. The direction they've gone with these films has waffled heavily based on rewrites and fan responses to early trailers and so on, and the final product has suffered for it.

Covenant's biggest issue is that it's too damn dark. The captain of the ship burns to death in his cryopod in the opening minutes of the film, and that basically sets the tone for everything after. It has the sense that things aren't going to end well throughout, much like Drag Me to Hell, with an ending that equally qualifies as a Diabolus Ex Machina. I can't say I didn't enjoy several parts of the film, most notably the fights, which are in the finest tradition of the series, marked by their frantic pace and quick improvisation by the human characters to overcome their seemingly superior enemy. These scenes are part of what made the earlier films so great and set the tone for darker sci-fi for decades therafter. As an aside, I was rather skeptical of casting Danny McBride in this film, but my doubts proved unfounded.

However, Covenant suffers from many of the same problems as other current generation horror films, most notably the predictably boneheaded series of decisions that lead the characters to horrible fates that could have been readily avoided. This was an element of the earlier films, but back then you could argue that it was still excusable with the audience. Nowadays, I'd expect film characters, especially trained colonists and security personnel, to be a lot wiser. While its certainly better then Alien: Resurrection, and blows the Alien vs. Predator movies out of the water, it has a bit of its head up its own rear with its philosophical and religious subtext. I have seen many characters like the villain before and their flawed rationale for their actions comes across as more forced then tragic. They come just short of card-carrying villainy and it sort of spoils the movie. By all means watch it if you've been keeping up with the series, but don't expect a miracle of screenwriting. Series newcomers should watch at least the first two films before going anywhere near this one. Also check out Aliens: Infestation on Nintendo DS if you're a gamer.

Good robot! Bad robot!

After some gaps, the 'Alien' franchise came alive with the prequel 'Prometheum' which originally said to be a spin-off. Particularly, it landed in the hands of the original maker. Now, even the original title back in action. It's another prequel, hence the prequel series on the making. The next film too will be the same kind, before the overall storyline in the franchise align in a straight line.

I enjoyed it. But not as good as 'Prometheum' or the first two 'Alien' films. The issue with it was, the same old cliché. There's nothing in the story. It was like any space film that's set in a similar fashion. The 80 per cent of the film was what we had seen in the earlier 'Alien' films. Just altered scenes with a new cast and a great visuals. So the update makes it the special.

The story focused too much on the robot. The alien parts were reduced. Because it was like the first appearance of the original aliens we saw in the old films. Precisely to say, the origins. Genetic modification, crossbreeding, there comes the beast. From this film what I have learnt was, it was nothing but more or less the same old fear the humans have about that the robots which are the ones going to make humans go extinct. Except here the aliens come between them. Hence, falling prey to the same clichéd theme from any sci-fi that had humanoid.

Nevertheless, well maintained film in its balance coming from previous hits in the series and going forward to bring more hits. This flick would serve as a fine bridge between them. So only 18 years to go between this, from 2104 to 2122. I'm already anticipating the next film. As I have heard, that film would be focused more on the robot. That's going to be a different experience. Fassbender's time to have some space adventures.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you like seeing dumb characters make stupid decisions, but haven't been satisfied with any of the previous films, then this is the film for you. Scott has doubled down on retarded space explorers for you guys on this instalment, so enjoy.

Jokes aside, this has to be one of the worst films of the franchise I have seen, up there with the likes of Aliens 3 and the AVP spinoffs. It has everything from overused cliches, predictable plot points, infuriatingly retarded characters and awful CGI.

If you were expecting some answers to the questions or payoff for the setup that was established in Prometheus, then I'm afraid you are **** out of luck. Nothing is answered, period. In fact Shaw and the Engineers have all been killed. So don't expect the hypothetical sequel to this bollocks to answer anything either. The characters get zero development and you will not care about any of them. You'll most likely be cheering for their deaths seeing as how they're all as thick as asphalt milkshakes. Imagine a ship full of Kanes and that is the Covenant crew.

Honestly, this could very well work as a spoof of the Alien franchise as a whole. Word of advise Ridley; if people are laughing at your horror film thats a clear sign you haven't done a good job.

However, if you are only interested in seeing xenomorphs and blood and don't care about stale overused plot, then you are a moron who will love this movie, just like all the people giving this film a score over five.

Nope, the story was terrible, not even Fassbender could save the plot and even colluded in the worst ending for a movie ever written. Scott has ruined the franchise if we let his "versions" become canon, which they are NOT.

We would be far better off none of this total bullcrap existed and the Aliens were just a random species on a random planet waiting in the dark for some poor wayfarer to discover. Trying to make something of the alien/creator/ out of anything is just so bad and cringeworthy. Bad writing at its worst.

Ridly, please don't make any more Alien films. This is Alien 3, all over again.
