What can I possibly contribute to the dialectic at this point? I guess just some stuff for my own amusement. I don't know what makes this film work.

It is of course, exquisitely made - the rhythms and pacing are second to none - you hear endlessly about withholding the big reveal (ala Jaws) but here it works even better that most do because the reveals kind of keep on happening. It starts small with an egg, then its a facehugger, acid blood, chestburster, little alien, and finally the full-on Alien, and even then it's mostly face and head (and mini-head) until the end. There's always something to occupy the fear and it keeps getting upped.

The whole end of this film is unrelenting tension. It's almost seizure inducing watching Ripley run around the ship with the blinking lights and the countdown chiming and the Alien around every corner - hypnotizing and petrifying. The first kill scene with the Alien descending the chains is a perfect blend of sight and sound. Same goes for most of the Alien's kill scenes (only ones that bother me are the tunnels, it's a great scene undone by stupidity - why do they think it's in the same tunnel as him and even if it is just blast the fire! don't run). The wide shot of the Alien turning towards Lambert is the only one that shows its age. Very tank like, no arm movement. Thankfully it's short lived. From what I read Scott didn't like those wides either.

Sigourney Weaver's Ripley is iconic of course, and it helps that she's a woman defeating this rapist (the two women are the last two standing) but it's clear the film isn't making it an agenda. It's just a part of the natural structure of the story. It's nonchalant. And personally, as great as she is in this, she's a pure action and reaction cipher (not that there's anything wrong with that- a whole character is suggested by her behaviors, mannerisms and interactions). But Ripley's stature is truly carved in stone in Aliens.

The set designs and creature designs are incredibly believable and awe-inducing. Ridley liked the space jockey so much he has created a whole new set of films about it - that's one memorable shot. They were, of course, a large jump forward for the time but that wouldn't hold up in posterity if it didn't still work and it does, because the design is still unmatched in terms of bold imagination. Surreal, slimy, sexual, black, chrome, nightmarish, otherworldly yet human - it's really the ultimate creature design for a reason. It's not just cool and terrifying, it suggests themes, nightmares we haven't had yet, the past the future, it even blends in with the blue collar working class rusted out futuristic space shuttle it stalks in.

What makes a withholding film work is that the payoff is worth it. Audiences can't suffer a bad good movie - one that knows what it takes to make something work but doesn't execute - but they're fine with a bad bad movie because at least it's mindless and "delivers". So when a slow burn actually works, it changes the whole entire landscape. When it doesn't, it bombs hard (especially with audiences). Everything else is in-between. This is one of the good good ones, duh.

This is one of the horror/suspense classics that started this genre and made it a staple. The atmosphere of it all is unmatched. The retro-futurism is classic. The style of it is almost minimalistic, a "less is more" approach. I just cant praise this movie enough. Expand

The thing I liked the most about "Alien" was Sigourney Weaver's character "Ripley." She's an out-of-this-world knockout that can even shoot massive creatures of Alien lifeforms to becoming one of the most popular characters today and back in the day. I have watched it sometimes, but I haven't get the quadrilogy on Blu-Ray. The Alien franchise was one of the best (except Alien 3, which was a far less Cameron-styled sequel) and although Prometheus is certainly not a prequel or a reboot to the Alien universe, it just goes to show the entire world what kind of strange and eerie creatures have ever been landed. But "Alien" deserves a big honor, one of the best science fiction movies of all time. Expand

The beginning section builds up a sense of tension, the aight of an abandoned ship, unsure of a distress or warning signal, and the most provocative is the eerie moment as the ships crew uncover the remains of a giant body. You suddenly realize that this film is throwing you in at the deep end, with this shot making you realize something dark is yet to come and leaves the question of what was here before them, and what caused this distress signal, are they all gone? Obviously this is all explained in Prometheus, but on initial viewing you feel a sense of dread and this worls out as one of the films creepiest moments.
After the infamous face hugger scene we realize that something bad is on its way, and even in the slow, steady moments of trying to find what this creature is and what are its motives there still is thrills there still remains tension, excitement and some intruiging speeches. But then comes one of cinemas most famous moments, the chest burster. The scene is so shocking that your are literally pulled from your seat while watching, this Leads again into the middle of the film, the team pulling together to find the alien. This works out very well, with us realizing the simplistic formaula of the films is excellent. As the team begin to search for answers and ehat they belive at the moment is a small alien, builds up to the climax of the unveiling of the giant alien that will gie people nightmares for years to come. The rest of film, in fairness, is simple, but as mentioned this make it even better, each member bands together for the search and we feel we are there with them, hoping and realizing the fear of being completely alone, in space. As more people are hunted down there are ingenoius waysof them going, there is no rung out violent deaths all are off screen and quickly over, but helps, as more of the crew describe the danger of the alien, we wonder what it did to them crew members next, again building more fear.
Finally the film comes to its head with sole survivor Ripley realizing she needs to get out of the ship, but knowing the alien is still aboard. The lingering silences in this finale, put you in Rileys place, her fear of the uknown and the realiziation that in the silence more can be heard. The films ending with the reveal of the alien being aboad with Ripley is still shcoking even though you kinda knew something else was coming. But the suprising point of this finale was that usually the alien on board would spell death for our protagonist, but we see Ripley, getting her courage and bravery to send the alien into space, a final realiziation for the film, Ripley is alnd always was going to be the surivior like anyone she is in fear, but that powers her bravery. I fins this scene a first in showing the power of women in film, with usually a film holding a woman who fights back but seems to always have some help; Ripley does not. She is literally completely alone apart from her menace the alien, showing she is cinemas first heroine to fight her own battle.
To conclude, there is not a single shot in Alien that does not leave one in awe and wonder, all of them make you think and stay with you. The acting is top notch too, with Sigourney Weaver playing the part perfectly. This turly is one of the greatest Sci Fi movies of all time. Ill say it again, perfection.

Here he took us to a windy planet but mainly the setting was the spaceship Nostroma. A crew of seven is forced to investigate a signal from an unknown vessel. So a series of gruesome events unfold. Scott takes half an hour to introduce us to the characters and after that it is a ride of pure thrilling fright.

All the characters are sufficiently drawn and explored, but none more than the action-girl Ripley, the like of whom I have not seen elsewhere. She is a force of nature. The movie works because the characters that populate the environment are engaging and their fear feels real. What fascinated me was the fact that the major decisions taken by the crew are what probably I would have agreed to myself. What I mean is the plot did not come into being because of someone's idiocy, as it tends to in lesser films. Their main concern was survival and all other things were secondary.

The art direction and visual effects were jaw-dropping. Given that this movie was made in 1979, that's a huge achievement. On the contrary, I feel like modern space films tend to look cartoonish. The set design was very convincing and the feeling I got was that this actually happened somewhere in the universe but was only shot in the past. Weird but true. The only part where I felt the movie was really old was when the Mother computer comes to life, otherwise the interior of the ship was fascinating and I certainly believed Ridley Scott's vision of a future mega spaceship. The director's cut looked and sounded better than ever.

The creature alien is a parasitic organism that is at once frightening and intriguing, and has more than one trick up its sleeve. Just when you think you've got it figured out, Scott throws something more sinister at you than before. The suspense was palpable, and that is where he does best. The movie builds up from scene to scene, the previous one being out-shined by the new one constantly, until the climax when everything goes wrong at the worst possible moment. Scott proves himself a master of not only how a film should look and feel but also the narrative, which is where most modern science fiction films fail even though their effects get better and better.

There is not much to discuss about the plot without ruining the effect. The source of the alien species is not discovered, which I hoped in vain would be revealed in the sequel. And an explanation about the other alien is perhaps asking for too much. These were answers that I sought from the film before I was zapped from all logic and reason and forced to witness the horror these beings were capable of inflicting. Scott included absolutely everything that was needed to make the film work. I feel like he should have taken reins to make the sequel as well. Maybe we could have learnt something new about the aliens but who knows.

Ridley Scott may disagree, but I feel like this is his best work. It's a true masterpiece deserving of all the praise it receives. It could easily have been caught up in the trappings of the haunted house genre, but Scott skilfully manoeuvres it around to where he felt like a sense of awe and mystery would be evoked along-with the thrills associated with the genre. I have always felt like there is at least one great movie to be made in each genre, which awaits the right director, and Scott was perfect for this.

It's sublimely detailed settings, acting, camerawork, and monster still hold up well to this day, and that's no small feat for a movie made in 1979. The world as well as characters feel authentic. Just a bunch of regular people doing their work who find themselves in unusual circumstances and struggle to survive. The tension builds up over time and you really like and care about characters.

Atmosphere and visuals are still stunning to this day. I think that's mostly due to lack of CGI which ages quickly. I can't imagine the amount of work put to create these sets. Soundtrack is just stunning and I highly suggest you Google a remastered version online.

What I probably valued the most as a child watching it for the first time and now as adult, is how it really shows vastness of space and potential coming with it. You never know what awaits next system? Who is elephant man? It was a food for thought when I was growing up. Unknown and lack of answers are enticing.

It's a shame the following movies (except maybe for Aliens) did no justice to the original. I think this movie was one huge coincidence and director simply doesn't understand what made it successful and is unable to reproduce it. I can't blame writer because Dan O'Bannon never got a shot at writing next Alien movie (although interviews with him make me think he wouldn't know where to take it too).

The all time classic, which works best if you consider it the only canon Alien product.

It is the story of the crew of theA cult classic that started a franchise, a legacy and is for many the quintessential science fiction / horror movie. In addition it made Sigourney Weaver, Ridley Scott and H. R: Giger world famous. It is the story of the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo. The crew is awakened from stasis by the ships computer as an emergency signal was received from a nearby moon. After the rocky landing they discover that it is not a ship of human origin and it holds a frightening secret. Here I stop my introduction because of spoilers. The great strength of the movie is the cast including the director and the atmosphere they created. The atmosphere is intense and as the movie progresses it gets better and better as the whole cast is in a grim situation that they want to solve while it might be fully out of their control. I must praise first the director Ridley Scott. He delivered a masterpiece and had a clear vision. There is even a scene were he did not told the actors about a surprise to get a more realistic and shocked performance (Everyone who saw the movie will immediately know the scene I described here spoiler free). Even if this was made up later it is believable as he clearly knows what he wanted and what worked in this movie. Then there are the actors. Let start with Sigourney Weaver whose career jump-started with this movie. She is the star of the movie and delivers a flawless performance. Tom Skerrit as captain Dallas is also good and only in this movie because of Ridley Scott (and a higher budget). The rest of the cast is also great and I think Veronica Cartwright, John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphet Kotto and especially Ian Holm should be mentioned here and praised for their performance. All in all they create an atmosphere that is so immersive that you forget that it is a movie. Then I must also talk about H. R. Giger and his effects. He became a legend and he deserved respect. In short he made a career and a lot of money out of nightmares and his imagination. His special effects were stellar and did not fail to deliver. I almost forgot the sets. Again they create a realistic and believable atmosphere. Just mundane space travel as it would look if it became common business and alien looking structures that are equally believable. Then there is the score that enhance the atmosphere. It is so good that you will not notice its effects that you will experience (This is not a critique and meant positive). I have nothing negative to say here and might only warn you about 1 scene that is maybe to shocking for some even if its widely know by now. When the crew takes a meal after a crewman recovered be prepared for the worst. Overall this is a masterpiece and cult classic. Got a rightful place in movie history and is still as good now as back then. Expand

The crew of the Nostromo has investigated a nightmarish uninhabitable planet and has brought back a terror that threatens to devour all of them, an interstellar embryonic hybrid that feeds on a living host during birth.

when the embryo evolves into a full fledged alien killing machine, crew member Ellen Ripley finds herself the only person destined to escape the maze of terror in the shape as all her companions disappear one by one, and with the ship on the verge of self-destructing in orbit.

lots of tense violent climatic chilling and disturbing scenes, including a creepy jumpscare, Ridley Scott has given us a horror attraction we will never forget! an excellent first in cinema history

goes to show that in space no one can hear you scream.........

Alien is simply wonderful, with imaginative production design especially and a magnificent score from Jerry Goldsmith. The pace is also right on the money with a purposefully slow build-up, the editing is great, Scott's direction is superb and the story is wonderfully structured with seldom a dull moment. The script is also thought-provoking, clever and well written, while the atmosphere is just spellbinding with a perfect mixture of false scares and genuine jolts. The acting is also top notch, Sigourney Weaver is amazing as Ellen Ripley, who is not only one of the most iconic characters in film history but a contender for Weaver's best ever role. It is a delight seeing fine underrated actor John Hurt, and he is great to watch as the curious crewman. Overall, defines the term sci-fi classic. 10/10 Bethany Cox Expand

Alien is the answer. So it's October and I was trying to think about something to review for Halloween at the scariest time of the year so I guess I better go for the one's that I have watched and maybe I could get the creepiness and not. Alien is the answer. When I was a kid, I've heard about the Alien films. Okay, I haven't seen them cause my dad told me they're disgusting films. It's kind of scary that he told me that. Alien is a film that everybody loved and got terrified by it. it came to be one of the scariest films of the 70's and when I first watched them as an adult, it scared the freaking hell out of me, well, not much because I'm not a wuss. Alien is the first to scare me. The opening had a scary reputation to creep me more than that, I watched some movie scary opening credits with creepy music and now this. Sigourney Weaver many people say is a great actress. Come to think of it, my mum is a huge fan of her. She's great as Ellen Ripley and all the other cast are great. The story is so gripping sometimes the film may have boring parts as a horror film but that's just the pace. The crew have woken up from their beds and then waiting to get home but has to find something what was crash landed in the island and Kane got face hugged by the creepy crawly things. Now Dallas and Ash had to get back to take a look at Kane getting face hugged, what's giving him. The face hugger's have acid for blood. And you know all the rest. I won't have to go into too much detail cause the audience have seen it for many years and you know classics never die. The alien is a creepy looking creature with a second mouth inside his mouth. Kind of a tongue mouth, ain't it? But the face? Yeah, that is incredibly looking creepy. And the scene that Kane dies because the alien is inside him and you've all remember what happens to people if the alien is inside the body? Behold, I give you the most terrifying, the most incredible, the most scariest scene that could ever give you nightmares, THE CHESTBURSTER! For me, though, it doesn't give me nightmares. There are some scary moments in this that always got my attention. OK, now, the video game I've played and that's Alien Isolation. This is after the film Alien before Aliens. Now when I was playing on the game though, it scared the hell out of me. I mean, REALLY scared me to death. Because when I actually come across the aliens, one for one actual reason has climbed down the ceiling and I have to duck down so that it couldn't see me. If I throw something out there the alien comes and searches something. I can tell by the sounds they're making. And I died by the alien that really does scare me. Everytime the alien comes, I kind of swore under my breath because how scary it is. The way the game is, the way that creature looks and the way it snawls, it's just pure scary. All right, so that's it for the game and I guess it's time for me to get back on my review. Alien is one of the scariest films I've ever watched and I frigging love it. My mum loves it too. Don't get me wrong, the movie's there, they're get you on your hat. the ending where Ripley escapes is really gripping because it feels like you're in the hurry. The hurry that when you're on the ship and getting the hell out of here before the time runs out. If you don't, the ship will explode. That got me right in here! It's kind of feels like you're leaving someone behind because they're dead, and yeah, the crew is already dead cause the alien killed them. There are some scenes that wasn't in the film and I already know that already so I can't remember any scene that wasn't in the original version. I already knew the scene where Ripley and Parker heard Bret screaming after he got slaughtered which is why I think that it should have included on the original. In fact, why can't all the missing scenes be in the original, there's always a catch. I don't know. Because they're from the Director's Cut. I think the Special Edition versions did the same to all the Alien films. There's no doubt about it. This is one of the greatest fantastic disgusting scariest science fiction horror film that ever hit the big screen in the late 70's. That is, uh, the lights are off in here. I could watch it every night and not get scared by it! Get ready for the sequel which I'm going to do in the meantime. Now sit back and get ready for a SPOOOOOKY night! Expand

The characters are relatable and likable but Sigourney Weaver stole the show. Her strong performance of Ellen Ripley surprised everyone and proved that a female character could be just as awesome as all the Han Solo’s and Captain Kirk’s. Alien to me is the perfect display of what a movie should be. It’s beyond great.

My Review
Aw man I have been wanting to watch this movie for quite some time now, thank God they were giving it on Amc. This film is a horror gem that must be seen(I use to not consider this a horror movie cause it's Alien.) it is one of the greatest horror films of all time.
The Film Revolves around a crew on there way home from a mission for the Company, the Nostromo's crew is woken up from hibernation by the ship's Mother computer to answer a distress signal from a nearby planet. They Unleash a deadly Alien into their ship and must stay alive.
What I love about Alien is how the motion picture builds on it's opening shot like Star Wars(1977) where it shows you the bottom of the ship and then the inside and you hear nothing cause in star wars there's shooting going on but in this our characters in Hyper sleep.
One of the great strengths of Alien is its pacing. It takes its time. It waits. It allows silences. It suggests the enormity of the crew's discovery by building up to it with small steps:The interception of a signal. The descent to the extraterrestrial surface. The mainstroke of the surface murk through which crew member move, their helmet lights hardly penetrating the soup. This is a masterpiece of Action,Horror and Science fiction that must be seen.

The plot is delightfully straightforward, but simultaenously layered and intriguing, with pacing brisk enough to keep viewers fully enveloped in the story.
For its time, it subverted the horror genre in an unfamiliar way by being unpredictable and popularised elements that slasher films would later borrow liberally from, all the while crafting a audaciously brave heroine Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). Although Weaver and her character were the breakout stars, there is not one forgettable crew member, from perpetually terrified Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) to Yaphetto Kotto's abrasive Parker.
The true star? HR Giger's iconically designed antagonist: the xenomorph. Ridley Scott's restraint with showing the alien only drums up suspense like Keith Moon awaiting for a prostate exam, and when it is seen in all its horrific glory, it's an unparalleled presence.
The production design of the sets by Michael Seymour. The intricate details of the titular monster by the screenwriters. The visual flair of director Ridley Scott. The performances of Weaver, Hurt et al. Jerry Goldsmith's score. Each crew member deserves individual acclaim for their work in this masterpiece, but unfortunately there's not enough room.

Nearly fourty years after it's release, I would still say that Alien is amongst the greatest horror and sci-fi movies of all time. The script is extremely intelligent, Ridley Scott's breakthrough direction creates an atmosphere so thick you can nearly touch it, and the seven characters are so well developed and well acted that no moments of this film feels fake. A film I associate with the **** being scared out of me when I was 12 years old..........thank you Dad.

When a film has made a significant impact it leaves a mark. I remember where I was, who I was with and how I felt when I first digested Ridley Scotts masterpiece and is a film I routinely return to.

Alien was reportedly pitched as 'Jaws in space' and follows a rag tag and often disgruntled crew as they are rudely awakened from cryo-sleep to answer a mysterious distress call down on the unknown planet LV-426. Needless to say, things don't go according to plan.

Alien is an exceptionally well crafted, slow burning sci-fi horror that still manages to shock and keep you on the edge of your seat today. The creature design by Giger is still horrifying and the subtle lore that is established serves to build intrigue without detracting from the main 'problem' the crew are facing. Little did 12 year old me know that these questions would be explored in the later made 'Prometheus'.

Notable mentions should go to Jerry Goldsmiths score who's eerily sweeping horns and strings have become synonymous with getting stalked by a xenomorph and to Ian Holm who turns in an excellent performance playing 'Ash' the ships science officer.

Although a slow burner to start (the action doesn't really kick off until the hour mark), the atmosphere and the journey you are taken on is worth the investment. This is Ridley Scott on top form and he has arguably rarely been better.

The setup is simplistic as a group of salvages in deep space answer an sos and discover an alien species that attaches itself to one of its crew. Later on he awakes and seems fine but soon after a deadly creature erupts from his chest killing him and begins knocking off the crew one at a time. Ridley Scott's perfect classic is intense and nightmarish suspenseful with fine performances all around but Sigourney Weaver is the real standout here. She injects Ripley with a vulnerability and strength that seems genuine and engaging. She's one of the fiercest heroines ever. The movie has garnered such a huge following over the years and rightly so it's one of the best movies ever made!

Also, this movie's got some brilliant uses of camera work and it's got some decent lighting when it's used in this film. Finally, most of the scenes hold up quite well and they don't look really outdated, there might be the odd one but apart from that, it holds up quite well to this day. I even thought most of the stuff with Alien holds up quite well due to the style of how he is displayed in this movie, which was pretty cool. Overall, I'd say it's a really good fantasy movie with some amazing scenes and it's even shown to be quite brutal and bloody during most of those scenes. Expand

Sigourney Weaver stars in the original that kicked off a franchise and Alien is by far the more superior and best out the lot. It's had sequels but sadly none could match it, when a crew receive a transmission from an unknown source they go to investigate but bring an intruder onboard after it attaches itself to one of their crew members faces. Later another bursts out of the same crew members chest and starts killing off the crew members one by one when it gets bigger. Alien is dark, scary, a great story and is full of suspense and terror and the cast is great with excellent acting and chemistry between the actors. A must watch! Expand

I've watched this film over 500 times and in all that time i've never felt the impact and craft of the film has lessened. It's a masterpiece and a definive example of how a Sci-horror should be written, filmed and executed.

The shooting techniques are amazing, the intro, development and conclusion processes are well fitted in addition to the suspense that is created during the film: Who will die? When? Can the Alien be killed?

And the movie has basically all the things I love and would love to see in any Sci-Fi: Different planet, alien race, spaceship, advanced technology, etc.

For those who like something faster or like Friday the 13th (many appearances of the villain) will not enjoy this movie too much, but I highly recommend it.

Scott's approach to filmmaking, with a focus on realism and a "less is more" attitude, has helped the film retain its impact even as technology has advanced. The Xenomorph, the film's iconic alien creature, is only present for four minutes, but its presence is felt throughout the film through its use of shadows and off-screen scares. The film began as a graduate student's project, but quickly gained traction and a larger budget after the success of George Lucas' Star Wars. The story follows the seven-member crew of the commercial spacecraft Nostromo as they investigate a transmission from a nearby moon. The film explores themes of commercialism and the value of human life. The performances from the cast, particularly Sigourney Weaver and John Hurt, are noteworthy and the film's iconic "chestbuster" scene remains a staple in the horror genre. The film's setting and atmosphere, from the claustrophobic interior of the Nostromo to the vast scale of the alien ship and moon, are expertly crafted and heighten the tension throughout the film. It's a blend of science fiction, horror and thriller, and a must-watch for fans of the genre.
