Well...what if it wasn't supposed to be in the first place. It's not some grand adventure. It's rather a character study in space. It's subtle and it's light. It's metaphorical and atmospheric, rather than bombastic and flashy. It's not trying to load you with a bunch of theories scientific theories like interstellar (although I liked that as well). It's a beautiful film that's focus is a father and son relationship. It's heartbreaking and devastating, but very thoughtful in it's exploration of ideas about our existence in the universe. Perhaps not for everyone but for those of us that it's meant for it, it's incredible. A great work of art. Expand

A heavily psychological take on the human experience with space. If you liked children of men there’s a good chance you’ll also like this film.

I do wish they would have gone more in depth with the characters which would’ve helped us make a connection with them. It just felt like it wanted to go from point A to point B as fast as possible. Most actors wouldn't be able to pull off an effective performance with such an abstract plot in a minimalist movie. James Gray is a genius. The cinematography is beautiful and the original score is haunting. This is the Space Odyssey of our generation. It is a very compelling movie. Expand

It’s a slow burn that has an emotionally distant lead character...and that’s basically poison to general audiences. With that being said, a lot of people also won’t like it purely because of the story. Like I said, it’s slow and it’s more about Roy’s journey to finding that emotion he lacks in the beginning. It’s about a man and his desire to have a relationship with his father. Space travel is not the true focus here. I thought it was extraordinarily well done and honestly I can’t find much that I don’t like about it. It also features the best cinematography a film has had in a couple of years. Every frame is beautiful. Expand

It’s a slow burner, favouring a sedately-paced 121-minute runtime to explore the fragility of the human condition, but that is not to say it lacks entertainment. There are a handful of truly exhilarating set-pieces set against the backdrop of planet-to-planet travel, filled with moments of true horror and simultaneous exuberance. Gray’s odyssey is a member of a rare coterie of intellectual science-fiction movies that exist to challenge the parameters of the genre it finds itself in; to be intelligent and also offer spectacle. It may not be for everyone, but by God is it an experience to remember. Expand

It's a flat-out masterpiece, filled with compelling ideas and poignant performances that left me both stunned and in tears. This movie is not "slow" in any way, shape or form -- simply by virtue of it not being an action blockbuster doesn't make it "slow." It is film that simply focuses on its characters and themes. "Character studies and philosophical questions? BORING! Throw in more explosions!" If this describes you, then don't watch this movie. If you appreciate an actual story with resonant themes that is both epic and intimate, then watch it. If anything, this movie was too short. Expand

Space travel and the science-based problem are only the dressing applied to a more personal story of love, distance, and duty. I have never been in space obviously, but the imagery and procedures in this movie are everything I have ever imagined it might be like. In this case, the realism of this movie is captivating. And the few twists that this movie presents are well earned and paid off. The soundtrack by Max Richter is perfect for a space film, and I can't wait for it to be available for purchase. The cinematography is everything we've come to expect from a gritty space western, with some really great scenes involving light and color I was drooling over in the theater. Expand

It's a character film which touches the human condition itself. This film is a dissertation on the human condition, on the impact of loneliness in a person, on the scars parents leave in a son/daughter, on how it influences one selves choices, on redemption itself and how we should let go something the pulls us down and embrace what pulls us up, on how we shouldn't search for answers on others but within ourselves and at the same time help each others carry our burdens. A cry for yearning to accept, you either let go then or rattle yourself to stand alone and fly alone.

Ad Astra

Point. And another point. Hopefully another followed by one other. The storytelling of a film- let us stick to that, for now- has been of these various points, stringed strongly by profound characters with profound theories pulsating on that attention grabbing screen. We jump from one to another, float, skip merrily, exhale boringly and criticize ambitiously. These formats have been kept in front of us over the ages in cinematic history. But lately, I found myself with extravagant projects standing against those obligatory notes, that they, the writers, the makers, are told to deliver, and reject the hypothesis, the notion on succumbing to those elements. "That's the spirit!" is my reaction, and the cinema takes its turn towards new possibilities.

Almost like a new exploration. Something that is extra terrestrial to us. And I'd be disappointed and not angry, if years, decades later, Ad Astra, co-written and directed by James Gray, won't get a nod for this analysis. The film is set in the future which has got only thing to bring alive in that fabric and that is the fact that the quality of the filmmaking is higher, mature, than what we receive, might even deserve. We are not ready for this kind of a show. I was not.

There are themes so pure and alone out there in the space, stripped emotionally by Brad Pitt, that horror seems a by product. A by product that you fall under it, every now and then amongst this post social media world. This hitchhiking version of the sci-fi adventure that we have never even thought of, has a man single handedly pull up a sun. A star. And it is that pull which Gray feels in Pitt's friendship over the years and that same pull that has kept Pitt young on the screen; artistically, his performance is still raw and decolorizing.

This was a very well done movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Even though the entire solar system is at stake, the movie still manages to stay very grounded, choosing to focus on Brad Pitt's character as he struggles with his normally cold and apathetic personality crumbling apart as he searches for his long lost father. The movie's science for the most part (aside from one particular scene near the end which was ridiculous) feels very believable. Definitely worth 2 hours of anyone's time, science fiction fan or not! Brad Pitt is really at top of his game, at this point he could be playing the most boring character ever and still carry a movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, this movie has nothing to do with Interestellar. Interestellar is the same movie as Inception, but in space. It's clever, extremely well done, and that's it. I don't even think Ad Astra is a sci-fi movie, as the space is only a metaphor for the main character's journey in life through solitude. Always looking out, trying to find reasons and answers, with goals in mind, and never looking in. It's about how our parents are in many ways our heroes, how much they are an example in our lives. But as we grow older, we end up learning that they're only humans, with flaws, and resentment and maybe also capable of grandious things. People can trash them, or put them on pedestals, but the truth is nobody is perfect nor the devil. It has strong religious conotation. The cinematography is amazing, and it's Brad's best acting ever. I didn't have problems with the pace and narration of the movie, but some people did. I must admit that Max Richter did let me down. I'm waiting for the 3 hour cut from Criterion, since some scenes from the trailer were not in the movie. And don't read those reviews trashing the movie. The character was not on a trip to f*cking Neptune for Christ's sake. He just went on a journey inside himself to find out how he became that person, and how he didn't want to be that person anymore. People are just so f*cking used to get everything chewed up that they can't even think for themselves nowadays. I'll tell you what, you want to go on a journey? Watch the movie and then read some reviews trashing it. It's really like going on a trip to human stupidity. Expand

The kind of movie to spend a healthy chunk of running time depicting characters thinking silently to themselves, interacting with parts of a futuristic environment, or having quiet conversations with other characters, whilst also having set pieces involving vehicle chases, explosions, and gun play littered throughout. It's a challenging, deep, cerebral watch, that's most definitely not for everyone, with many people understandably finding it pretentious or indecipherably guarded. I however, greatly admired its different and decidedly eccentric method overall. Expand

I wasn’t enamoured with Intersteller or 2001: A Space Odyssey and before you attack me I’m not hating on those movies, they were good, they looked amazing but I didn’t love them. My idea of a good space movie usually features a xenomorph and Sigourney Weaver but each to their own. I liked Ad Astra, I found the story intriguing and we got another great performance from Brad Pitt this year so kudos Brad for picking the right movies for a change. It seems many people are bored by space movies and that’s fine, maybe Ad Astra isn’t for you but don’t go hating on it just because you found the story too slow. It certainly isn’t deserving of some of the harsh reviews it’s receiving online.

Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is sent on a mission to the outer edges of the solar system to find his father (Tommy Lee Jones) who went missing on a mission 30 years ago. Gives us something a little different than your typical “let’s explore space” movie with scenes full of tension. I wasn’t always sure what was going to happen next and I was fully engaged with the story. As with a lot of space movies it’s very pretty to look at with a beautiful soundtrack to go with it. Music is essential for any film but space movies particularly needs a memorable score to compliment it. Ad Astra is a lot more emotional than I ever expected it to be and you may leave the cinema feeling sadder than when you went in but it’s a movie and it’s going to make you feel something or else it didn’t do its job. Recommended for all you Brad Pitt and/or Sci-fi fans.

As someone who loves these kinds of movies (the Space genre,or the Experience Genre for my taste. This one breaks the barrier, though),this was probably my favourite kind of Space Movie. I love that the best Space Movies out there now are all about Daddy Issues, between this and Interstellar. Don't let the Disney/Fox merger trailers fool you into thinking it's an Action Movie, because, while this is a Space Opera (and an Action Movie for 2 Seconds) in a way, this is (at its heart) a Character-driven film. Oh,and it's also slow, but should I even care? (we'll get there later)
I mean it as "this is a Character film",because we only follow him,his experiences in Space and his struggles in life, while he's travelling his ass over the stars, amidst a Future that I would perfectly picture in my head, and a big-ass " Save The Universe" plot. Brad Pitt shows his all in this,as he plays a Character that I can kind of relate to (with lines like "I talked when I should've listened" or "They're using me") in terms of charisma, movements or even wide range of emotions. When he freaks out,he WILL freak out. There's also a cute subplot about him always being committed to the next mission and how he should stop. Good stuff.
This is also handled by some great Production Design. Hoyte Van Hoytema (the Photographer of several Nolan movies) films this and it looked beautiful from the first second. Seriously,I hated myself for remembering this didn't come out in IMAX (but Yesterday sure did, because why not),because it could've benefited A LOT from some Premium Cinema experiences. Same for the Score,as it fuels up the narrative and makes it creepy or tension-full at times. This is the one where I feel like Lorne Balfe will get the Oscar. You know he's on his way NOW.
And the Art Direction is a standout here. Never has Space looked this beautiful and stunning since 2001 A Space Odyssey. Oh,and let's discuss the Action Sequence on the Moon. That is history right there,80 seconds or less, and I'm glad they pulled the heels hardcore and went full Fury Road, between Solar Panel crashes,Gravity throws, and Laser Guns (?!?),which appears to be a common theme in this movie, and I'm glad it is.
Although, had it not been for a Plot Convenience moment, then it would've been perfect. Yeah,it's emotional and all,but it's still Plot Convenience.
And the other flaws i'll mention aren't in relation the movie,so take them as rants about the average Audience.
Are we (no,not me. THEY) now acknowledging slow movies exist and are boring to the average consumer who goes to the movies? Disney/Fox merger trailers aside,go see Costumes Abbey or Abominable (next movie for me...God) if you're that bored with Space Shenanigans.
And if you want to go see this, please support this. I'm struggling to write a coherent review for it (and usually studios like 20th Fox are crowded for Franchise craze) but I'm telling you. It's failing to make its money back,so please. Go see this and stop supporting movies like "Oscar Nominee for Best Costumes" and "Animated Yeti". Ok,Universal rant over.
Space is scary and sad,but it rocks. Hell yeah it ROCKS.

Ad Astra is an ode to character development, having so many aspects to exploit, decides to take the best of each of them to complement the true purpose of the movie, reconstruct the introspection of the protagonist.
Although the story is about a space trip to Neptune, really beyond the trip, it is the events that lead a man to question his life purpose and why he makes the decisions he makes.
It is a movie that takes full advantage of the visual and sound aspects of being located in space, but those factors go to the background when the protagonist is on scene, since the primary interest is to know his thoughts.
The more the history moves away of the earth , the more fictional it becomes, which takes away realism from the story. However, the message remains clear, we have to stop looking outside and start looking inside

It's incredibly reminiscent of the shots, dialogue, and overall feel of "2001: A Space Odyssey" with the "Apocalypse Now" slow descent into madness, watching yourself change for the worse, questioning your beliefs while going after someone who's very far away with a god complex. Ad Astra is a daring story of exploration, not only space but our very self, this film deals with a deep-seated urge humans always had, a question that lingered in the back of our minds, are we alone? Coming into a genre well representedAd Astra is a daring story of exploration, not only space but our very self, this film deals with a deep-seated urge humans always had, a question that lingered in the back of our minds, are we alone? Coming into a genre well represented in the last decade by many great films, Ad Astra doesn't necessarily overwhelm but it managed to tell a well written and executed narrative in a very minimalistic approach, as you watch the film, you notice that it doesn't focus on the scientific details, it strives to address a higher meaning and that's the very core of the movie, it succeeded to make me invest myself into the story, granted, it is very easy for me to do so as I find the idea of the exploration of the universe extremely fascinating.
Pitt's performance here is amazing, his rendition of a stoic astronaut that represses so much of his problems gives an unparalleled grip to the story, his scenes with the great Lee Jones are proof of that.
Contrary to what might this film leads you to believe, Ad Astra is not about the exploration of space, it explores human nature and our reaction to hardships and pain, I very much loved it.

Just looking at the reviews on both RottenTomatoes and MetaCritic, people have completely misunderstood the film. I don't directly blame them at all, to be honest. The film was mis-marketed to be a Sci-Fi epic, like some big action movie. But that is not the case. 'Ad Astra' is a slow-burn character study of sorts of Brad Pitt's character. The film is absolutely gorgeous with stellar cinematography, incredible visuals, and a possible Oscar nomination worthy performance from the lead role, Brad Pitt. Overall, this is definitively the next 'Interstellar' in ways, but a very different Sci-Fi film in general. Plan to see something entirely different than what was marketed! Expand

I was expecting the tone and pacing to be comparable to other films like 2001: A Space Odyssey (although not as good because come on, 2001 is 2001), which is a movie some people drew comparisons to. However, compared to 2001 or even other space movies like Interstellar, this is pretty straight-forward and fast-paced, despite being slow-paced for most of the movie. The movie is just 2 hours long and it felt like 2 and a half hours or 3 hours because at times the pacing was really bad. I can't call this movie boring because at least it had interesting visuals, I would call it slow and hard to watch in a single viewing honestly.

In the technical aspects this movie is phenomenal. The cinematography and visual effects are great, it reminded me a lot of First Man, another space movie that has some great VFX. The tone sometimes can get a little inconsistent. Just to give you an idea, most of the movie is slow but there are "action" parts that felt that they belong in another movie, it takes a little bit away from the experience, but not too much to the point of ruining it. The writing and story aren't anything special and can get predictable at some points.

The performances are other redeeming quality. Every actor gives a great performance, specially Brad Pitt. If the acting wasn't good or remarkable, then the movie would be pretty bad, but that is not the case and overall, this is a pretty enjoyable movie, but don't expecting to be blown away and leave the theater asking questions like with Interstellar or 2001, nor expect a fast-paced action movie like Gravity, nor to be emotionally moved like with First Man.

The dizzying space fall, horror-esque SOS detour, and intense moon rover chaseAd Astra seemed like two distinct movies stitched together right down the middle. The first half is kinetic and action-filled as advertised in the trailers. The dizzying space fall, horror-esque SOS detour, and intense moon rover chase sequences, in particular, were equal parts heart-pounding and visually striking. I don't think I've ever seen a vehicle chase on the moon executed this viscerally before.

Everything switches gears in the midpoint when Brad Pitt's Roy McBride reaches the red planet. The film practically loses its exciting energy when it finally decides to focus on the main conflict of the story: Roy's relationship with his father (or the lack thereof). The film suddenly feels plaintive, ruminative, and lonely—especially against the backdrop of the vast emptiness of space.

To its credit, 'Ad Astra' maintains A+ cinematography and other-worldly imagery throughout its respectable two-hour runtime. If you allow me, I'd even compare this film's gorgeous and mystifying visuals to that of Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey' (*film grain included). It's a visual treat and Max Richter's hauntingly beautiful score is the icing on top of this cosmic cake.

Perhaps I would've enjoyed this more if it had just a little payoff on the extraterrestrial intelligence front, but that whole "search for alien life" aspect was not the point of this story—which really is (in contrast to the marketing) a dark and stoic expedition to strip apart complex father-son dynamics and question our definitions of masculinity (and where love, longing, and fragility fit in to the idea of a "man" or heroic figures).

Although it seems like there's too much build up for an unrewarding ending, the visuals are fantastic. I've never seen since Interstellar such realism to what its like on another planet or moon. Although I feel the ending of this movie was sort of a let down, it tells a good story about a man just trying to find out what happened to his dad and realizes there similarities on the way. Expand

Loved this movie! A proper film-lovers film with a real undercurrent of gravitas evident throughout. Often felt to me like I was watching a space-age version of Apocolypse Now. Often felt to me like I was watching a space-age version of Apocolypse Now. Beautifully shot, weighted just about perfectly as a character study (of Brad Pitt's character), plus I thought that Pitt, just like Martin Sheen in FF Coppola's classic, carried the whole venture, and us with it, along fantastically. Some of the best use of color and visuals in a space movie ever. Underrated in my opinion.

This film was advertised as an adventure in space when in reality it is a drama that happens to astronauts on their journey through space, and u know something? That's not bad and works most of the time. When Ad Astra works, it flies beyond the stars masterfully commanded by a Brad Pitt who may be Oscar-worthy, but unfortunately the film finds few plot holes along the way, which avoids mediocrely or without great depth, just to focus more on the emotional weight of the story (some script failures and in history if), such as the presence of pirates, a little adventure on Mars, but mainly the monkeys (really ??? ?). I do not doubt that James Gray is one of the most interesting contemporary directors in the current Hollywood market, but this movie leaves the viewer wishing more about a proposal that could be something better.
