An Amazing film! I loved the cinematography and the way Bradley cooper used light in the film, though i do think the second half of the film should have focused on Ally a bit more. + if Lady GaGa doesn't win an Oscar i'm going to riot.

Bradley Cooper, after showing us that he can bring it in front of the camera, in movies like American Hustle, The Hangover and Silver Linings Playbook, he now shows us that he can also bring it behind the camera, and oh boy he brought it

Not only he worked wonders directing this film, he was great acting in it as well, Lady Gaga was amazing as well, in a role that was basically tailored made for her, and really the supporting characters were amazing too.

The music is one of the best i've seen in a movie, music that contribute to the story, and give another depth to what is already a great movie.

The movie flows so well, the contrast between Ally's rising career and Jack's slowly hitting rock bottom with his alcoholism, was amazing.

The movie shows that, the music industry can make people lose themselves, as Ally starts with something to say, but quickly shifts into this typical pop sensation, showing and talking about her body, looking for approval, is epic. And lady gaga portrayed that really well. Seeing Jack, slowly realizing he's loosing her to the music industry is heartbreaking, and leading to the movies tragic scene. At times some characters moments seemed rushed, like important moments just seemed to be shoehorned in the movie, like their wedding, seemed to be really rushed, while i think it could have been a beautiful moment.

I have so much praise for this movie, it is definitely one of my favorites this year, and i can only recommend for people to watch it. I watched it in an almost empty room and it made me sad that more people didn't go watch this masterpiece

to keep the tone persistent..

A Star Is Born

Cooper's humble adaptation of the infamous love saga is pure passion cutting through all the hoax of unfiltered cinema, breathing perpetually a genuine emotion. This musical drama is created in a way to be relied upon each other, so that the musical acts won't pause the ticking clock behind the screen. And clocking at around 136 minutes, it has so much to say with equally detailed version, that not only is the music a major character in here, but so is the editing (the editing was a borderline risk since it could have gone either way) in here. Cooper's awareness on each scene (and mind you, there are plenty) is what boosts this too-much-mechanical material through which he keeps the crisp alive and the audience attentive towards it. He is a real trickster as far as execution is concerned. His first act had the flamboyancy to drag the line without any essential stops but since the latter stages are mere series of various events, he shatters the entire first act into bits and pieces to keep the tone persistent. The strongest act of all has to be the background tale of Elliot and Cooper whose brotherhood conveys their entire trajectory of their character. Unfortunately, other side characters are left to be pawns where they hold on to their characteristics till the end. Cooper's portrayal of his three dimensional underdog character is jaggerdly on mark with tiny notions that he has brimmed his entire act that stays with you through his every now and then fumbles. Gaga gets to hit the last home run and she is surprisingly convincing in each frame on her portrayal of an uprising yet lost musician. The middle act of the feature is the real deal. It fiddles with emotions between these two lead characters in a way that allows you to put your shoes in both the characters and Cooper lets only the expressions speak volume at such moments.

The exchange of bittersweet opinions, the electrifying attraction, outstanding music, sharp sound effects, pragmatic conversations and thoroughly competent and layered dialogues, easily gives you the anticipated chills. The ruggedness of Cooper's character and fame is somehow turned mythological and natural whilst Gaga's is left efficient and pre-planned that makes it dry and numb. And it is that weighing down of the mixture of fame and art, that Cooper wants you to hold on to. His vision is so bizarrely fascinating that it is independent of the semantics. The method isn't safe but productive. Cooper's last thoughts are narrowed down to such innocence within a snap, that it melts you down easily and not because of its manipulative nature but the peeling of the artwork that it does through hard work. Amidst all the uncouth language and darker themes projected unflinchingly in here, the relationships are immensely humble along with the words in the lyrics. A Star Is Born is the amalgamation of wider range allegory that analysis nature and emotions within a three minute song, listen to it, this isn't a familiar tune.

It is much more tightly focused on Jack than Ally, to the point of nearly abandoning exploration of Ally's complicated feelings about her own rising stardom midway, and ceding all points it almost makes about sexism and fame to the music industry, in order to get on with Jack's story. Unevenly paced, and with some dangling threads to pick up, the film was enjoyable, but ultimately lacked the courage to take its breakout song's promised dive into the deep end. Expand

It's full of cliches and by the book scenarios. Rushed beginning, naively developed and unconvincing plot (romantic comedies manner), forced and manipulative emotions and a lot of really unrealistic cringy moments (the whole grammy awards situation). The real star of the movie isn't Lady Gaga. Her character seems underdeveloped and her acting is very superficial. It really shows that she is at the beginning of her journey into acting - and I'm not convinced that she has what it takes to be an actor. After watching the film I have no idea who her character was. The girl was all over the place. The view on her career and music business was presented in such a shallow manner and again felt very unrealistic. The whole "we are going to change you and make you a star" felt like a short naive story from Britney Spears videos, and not like a plot from "wanna be treated serious" drama. What's funny is that the character's "fake for the business persona" is reminiscent of that of Lady Gaga. Only naive people would believe that her pop-star persona isn't created by the team of people and precisely designed for mass audience. So it's a bit funny to watch Lady Gaga playing a girl who had compromised her identity for a huge career in music business, when she's actually done that in real live. Of course she would deny that and said that her Lady Gaga persona is very personal, real and true - but it's not exactly the case. The real star here is Bradley Cooper. The problem is that his character is also a walking and breathing cliche. At least he was more convincing than Gaga. This movie falls into "Dirty dancing", "The bodyguard" (hit soundtracks/diva in the lead) etc. category. A B-movie loved by lots of people. I'm OK with that. It has a world-wide famous singer in the cast, and a directional debut of Bradley Cooper - of course critics will look somewhat favorably on it. But seriously the whole hype and oscar buzz is just so blown out of proportion of what this movie really is and what has managed to achieve. If this movie deserves to get any oscar recognition it should be for supporting role for Sam Elliot (he was the real real star and emotional blast in his tiny scenes) and for music. I would nominate the song which Gaga and Cooper sing together for the first time on stage. The last solo song was really disappointing and weak. It didn't have strong enough emotional struck despite the Gaga's impressive vocal abilities.
In conclusion. It's an OK movie. Too shallow, naive and emotionally manipulative to consider it - great drama. It's like Gaga's character from the movie, designed to appeal to the masses.

Everything on this film is good. The final scene - by the way, the most shocking and emotional - and the I'll Never Love Again performance left a Whitney Houston feeling, and I can see some points in common between I.N.L.A. and I Have Nothing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bradley Cooper sets the tone for A Star Is Born on its very first scene, an electrifying outdoors concert performance by his character Jack that makes us viewers experience guitar sounds and bass pumping on our chests. Cameras are always up on the stage, from that moment you learn you are about to experience the story from the performers point of view, and extremely close to their faces. After you meet Jack, we change scenarios to meet the star to be born, Ally. Lady Gaga plays the character that works daytime in a restaurant, and is talented enough to have a Friday night gig at a local Drag Bar.

Jack randomly ends up at the drag bar after his performance, where he meets Ally's best friend right at the door, who insists Jack has to hear Ally sing, and also takes him backstage to meet her and the queens. It's a very special moment when they get to meet and talk for the first time, Jack plays with Ally's fake eyebrows and sparks start to fly. Ally watches Jack perform ''Maybe It's Time'' after hours in the bar, which is a request from the hilarious drag queen Willam, and that's when you can see in her eyes she's falling.

They start to hang out together, live and breathe music, their chemistry is pure magic. At that point you wish the movie was 4 hours long so you could experience that marvelous feeling a little longer. We see the duet of the breathtaking ''Shallow'' that Gaga showcases all her astonishing talent as an actress that differentiates Ally from herself. The beautiful ''Always Remember Us This Way'' performed by Ally wraps what their relationship is all about.

As Ally's career starts to soar, things start to go downhill with Jack because of his addictions to drugs and alcohol, even though their love is always well and present. The second part of the movie is not as magical as the first one, however the amount of drama, comedy, and tragedy here is done right, and I left the movie at TIFF eagerly waiting for it to come out in theaters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The talent overflows, the direction of Bradley Cooper hit the spot to make no scene seem necessarily acted, produced an atmosphere of extremely realistic relationship, the interpretation flows like a river that never loses focus, due in large part to the chemistry between the protagonists and the acting quality of Cooper. Lady Gaga full of energy fulfilled the requirements to give life to one of the most iconic characters of the remake with a vocal performance of the highest level, achieved an emblematic participation since the soundtrack that she composed is in itself the biggest and best part of the movie. I regret that in the climax and last part of the film my emotion for the fatal outcome was not what I expected, due in large part to the extremely realistic character of the film, but mostly for the poor development of the relationship between the protagonists . A deep dive was not achieved. "Shallow" is a song that deserved more relationship time to dedicate and "Is that alright?" Could have been perfect before the arrival of Ally's manager at Jack's house.

I had seen the trailer at least 5 times in theatres and every time I said to myself, "That's going to be so FUN." And to an extent, it is. The music is lyrically some of the best I've heard this year, and witnessing Ally's rise to fame and struggle with her identity were the best aspects of the plot for me. Don't get me wrong, Bradley Cooper's character, Jackson, is fun to watch on stage and Cooper has a great voice, but his character ruined my enjoyment a bit. I didn't like him at all. Mostly in the first half of the film where everything he does is so cringey, to the point where a romance, that's supposed to be cute, is laughable. Ally and Jackson's interactions made the audience laugh an uncomfortable amount of times, and I don't know if this was the intention of Cooper and the writers, but like I said, it took away some of the enjoyment I expected to have. There were genuinely funny moments in the middle of all that, though, thanks mostly to the drag queens.

However, having said that, the film does feel like it was shot through a documentary style lense. A combination of Gaga: Five Foot Two and those typical "on the road" documentaries bands make while on tour, so maybe male artists just be like that and Jackson's actions were authentic of someone in that business. It's not free of plot holes either. The most evident that comes to mind is Dave Chappelle's character who's thrown in with no explanation of who he is or how he knows Jackson. The film would have benefited from a shorter runtime, so cutting out Chappelle altogether would have been a good idea, in my opinion, since we never see him again after his few scenes.

The film takes a depressing turn real fast, becoming a film I didn't expect. It's so heavy. One of those films that, at least for me, couldn't be binge watched 10 times a week (and I'm a Gaga stan!).

Speaking of L. Gaga, she really does The Most. I would go as far as saying that she outacted everyone, including Cooper. To throw in an example, there's a scene where he has a breakdown and he's supposed to be crying but there are no tears and Gaga's just sitting there with a single tear streaming down her cheek. Ugh! Academy Award! With the Academy's past of nominating stars who sing and act in their film, I won't be surprised if Gaga receives a nomination. And her final shot? PHEW.

Its a little formulaic I suppose but the performances were very good and the music was especially enjoyable, both in terms of energetic live performances and also with numerous scenes showing the two main characters in quieter, low key settings (at home, outside in the dark etc.) where they sing to each other, so it's certainly still worth seeing. There's some good cinematography and I liked that it has perhaps a more modern feel to it, with the drag club setting and one or two plot points being representative of modern times. Its a fairly engrossing watch and so I would recommend it, yes. Expand

You'll experience every emotion you are capable of. Its funny, romantic, and heartbreaking. Definitely my favorite story in any film I've seen this year. Cooper and Gaga have really good chemistry in this movie. I felt like they were actually in love. The characters were fantastic and no good movie gets by with subpar characters. This movie develops them pretty well. The songs are amazing. This is the first time I've felt compelled to rush out and buy the soundtrack. There's lots of original songs, which some were written by Willy Nelson's son. They're all fantastic. Bradley Cooper could probably pass as a musician in real life. He's certainly a hell of a director. The concert scenes are so immersive that you feel like you're there. Don't count on a happy ending. As inspiring as the movie is, you'll leave the theater quiet and go home and turn on a Disney movie to balance it out. One of the saddest movies since Marley and Me. Expand

The lead cast are exceptional here with Cooper and Gaga delivering top marks for their character work and their relationship feels genuine both off and onscreen. Supporting cast are very good and the soundtrack in this movie is memorable. Surprisingly the cinematography captures in a visual way, the emotional auditory quality of live music that I find moves me (in particular Cooper's Jackson playing guitar in the introduction). There is a big red beating heart of emotion at the core of this movie and I found myself visibly moved several times throughout.... in particular with the later revelation of where coopers Jackson character got his musical inspiration from. Highly recommend this if you are a fan of romantic/drama/music genre! Expand

Most of them are written by Gaga haters and Madonna fans. The reviews are biased and have been harshly posted to bring down the score. Anything under ‘7’ is also not credible, as this film is the real deal. From someone who watches a lot of quality cinema.
It’s touching, moving, emotional, well-directed (especially for a directorial debut), has decent cinematography (the red and green colours used and the camera work), a great supporting cast, and great writing. Bradley and Gaga are at least on lock for at least a ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’ nomination; which is huge for Gaga, being a debut role. She’ll be the first mainstream singer-come-actress to succeed in a film career, since Cher over 30 years ago. It doesn’t happen often. Madonna couldn’t do it, nor could Rihanna , Mariah or Beyonce, and the others. Gaga is indeed a revelation in this film. She performs beautifully, with a nuanced vulnerability that I preferred to her peers’ acting in 2018, that will allow her to go head-to-head with Glenn Close and Olivia Coleman at the Oscars in 2019. May the best woman win.
From all the male contenders I’ve seen this year, Bradley deserves that Best Actor win, in my opinion, but it appears to be going to Ethan Hawke instead. We shall see!

This version is less focused in the female and more on the male character. I’d say a 60:40 ratio. Don’t go in to the film with high expectations. Don’t pay any attention to the minority of film critics or the general public discrediting the film for being a ‘remake’. Many of you may not have even seen the other versions, so why does it matter? I’ve seen the 1954/1976 versions and all three are different from the other, in their own ways. Barbra’s was dreary and lacked chemistry, Judy’s was actually pretty captivating.
This new version is a fresh take on a timeless love story, but is also different from the others. The addiction is depicted more far more realistically here and the famous finale is 10x more emotional than previous versions. The final shot of the film and how it blacks out to the film credits was just breath-taking. The soundtrack is amazing. The standouts for me are: ‘Is That Alright?’ (screams wedding song and deserved better exposure than being played in the film credits) and ‘Look What I Found’. This film will sweep up the Golden Globes and I have high hopes for the Oscars next year.

"Maybe it's time to let the old ways die."

'A Star Is Born' is a depressing look on love, drugs and rock n roll, but will occasionally stumble into some cliche moments with the main message shooting itself in the foot. I mean, the whole "if you’re talented, but don’t have anything to say", which is just this movie. Nothing new is said at all. However, as soon as the credits rolled, I was left speechless. A mishmash of emotions that left me drained.

Bradley Cooper is absolutely excellent as the talented, yet deeply troubled Jack. Every time Cooper is on screen, I really bought him as the alcoholic rock star. The way he carries himself throughout with his mumble speech was totally believable. I don't know what’s more impressive: This is Cooper’s directorial debut or his singing voice...maybe both.

Lady Gaga is also really great and finally shows off her acting chops, something that her previous roles failed to do. While some of her line delivery was a bit unnatural, but I thought she’s terrific during the dramatic aspects. And of course her singing voice is dynamic.

Sam Elliott, on the other hand, absolutely broke me and his screen time is very slim. Without spoiling anything, there’s a scene involving him reversing his car and we get a close up shot on Elliott’s face, with no dialogue and music, just his reaction. It’s some of the best acting.

The sound design is incredibly detailed, especially during the concert scenes. The songs itself are really good and you can understand why within this story it made them stars. Although the editing is a bit clunky at times and the directing isn't anything too special. The movie can get a little bit predictable, because it almost follows the Oscar bait formula, but didn’t distract my emotional investment .

Overall rating: Out of all the movies nominated this year at the Oscars that I thought are either bland or straight up bad - this is probably my third favorite with the others being 'The Favorite' and 'Roma'.

*me to Bradley Cooper* "I just wanted to take another look at you."

There was also the interest to see how Lady Gaga would fare in her acting debut and how Bradley Cooper would fare as first-time director. Decided to see it when taking a break from practise with nothing else better to do, going in with very high expectations, as part of my "seeing as many 2018 films as possible" quest.

This is not the only, or first, 'A Star is Born' film. There is one from 1937 with Mitzi Gaynor and Fredric March, my personal favourite. There is one from 1954, the most famous, which is overlong but does contain Judy Garland's best ever performance and terrific songs (especially the heart-wrenching "The Man That Got Away"), love James Mason in it too. There is the 1976 film with Barbra Streisand, personally don't care for it but Streisand sings beautifully and "Evergreen" is to die for.

As far as the versions of 'A Star is Born' goes, this one from 2018 compares extremely favourably. Not quite as good as the 1937 film, but on the same level as 1954 and better than 1976. May not love it as much as others, but the appeal is justified and the acclaim is deserved from my personal perspective. In terms of films from 2018, 'A Star is Born' is among the better ones.

It's not perfect. A few story elements are a touch rushed and lack credibility, like Ally getting stage spotlight in such a short space of time, and occasionally it's a little on-the-nose like the making Ally glitzier advice from Rez.

The final act also could have been tightened, slightly too padded and dragged out.

What 'A Star is Born' does so well is taking a familiar story and making it still fresh and relatable. It's always entertaining and glamorous yet the love story is every bit as important, and even more so, and is both charming and emotionally impactful. Everything about 'A Star is Born' is slick, endlessly entertaining and with lots of heart and surprising poignancy, also had the experience of not a dry eye being in the auditorium with tears silently rolling with me.

Visually, it's very eye catching and sumptuously made, beautifully shot with lots of glitzy glamour and style. Loved the songs, none are quite on the same level as "The Man That Got Away" and "Evergreen" but they are extremely well written, easy to remember, have a wide range of emotions, are very well sung and staged, are integrated beautifully integrated into the story, some moving the story forward or telling it through the song rather than being a grinding things to a halt distraction. "I'll Never Love Again" and "Shallow" stand out.

Dialogue has wit and heart and the story shines particularly in the first third. Cannot say anything bad about the performances, with Lady Gaga providing a contender for the most surprising performances of the year in a quite outstanding acting debut (her singing is also absolutely great of course), a star is born indeed. Bradley Cooper gives one of his best performances as a charismatic and charming yet conflicted leading man, do not associate him with musicals and worried as to whether he would fit but it fits him like a glove. He too directs for the first time, and it is hard to believe that a directing job this slick and audacious was only his debut, really do disagree about his contributions being a vanity project with so much effort being put into everything. There is fine support from particularly Sam Elliott and the chemistry between the two leads is wholly believable.

Altogether, very, very good and often splendid. 8/10 Bethany Cox

The acting is great all around, especially from the two leads. While I wouldn't call this Bradley Cooper's finest work, at least compared to performances like Silver Linings Playbook, it's still a solid performance all around. He matches the role of the aged and drunken rock star well, plus his voice sounds absolutely amazing backed by some fantastic country and Americana tunes. However Lady Gaga shines in this role. I'm not much of a fan of her music outside of a few tunes, plus I've heard from friends that she's not all that good of an actress from previous roles (and more specifically her Golden Globe win for American Horror Story), her first leading role here works really well. She's great in this! And while I'm not a huge fan of her singing style, I'm not going to deny that she can sing! Although whether or not she deserves an Oscar for this is certainly debatable (she will probably win because the Academy LOVE to give the Best Actress award to roles like her's *coughcoughGwynethPaltrowcough*)The rest of the supporting cast is great, from Andrew Dice Clay to Dave Chappelle to Anthony Ramos. However the real standout has to go to Sam Elliott, who absolutely kills it in this movie, and dare I say one of his best performances in a film!

So let's talk about the music. Largely co-written by Lukas Nelson, son of country legend Willie Nelson, along with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and including a ton of talented musicians behind the scene, ranging from the likes of Dave Cobbs, Jason Isbell, Mark Ronson, DJ White Shadow, Diane Warren, and (unfortunately) Julia Michaels, the music is some damn great country and Americana songs backed with some fantastic playing and Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's great vocals. Standouts for me include Black Eyes, Shallow (which will win Best Original Song I guarantee it!), and Always Remember Us This Way. There are a few duds here, like Heal Me and Why Did You Do That?, which the R&B style doesn't work for Gaga and just felt awkward when she sings it. And the closing song I'll Never Love Again just reminded me of a song Whitney would have done for the Bodyguard (specifically I Have Nothing) and it's just not that powerful unfortunately, just felt like a pale imitator.

What I like about this movie is that, while the story has been told before and the themes are not new, the film makes up for it with just interesting characters for our leads. We can relate and see what each character is going through and feel for their triumphs and their downfalls. The movie benefits not just from the performances, but also from Cooper as a director. It's his first time directing and for a debut it's pretty great! He chooses to adopt a more up close and personal, hand held approach at directing, getting a personal, intimate, and at times unflinching look at these characters lives. This movie is a lot like La La Land in that it might not be original, the effort and care there is with making the film more than makes up for the shortcomings.

Speaking of shortcomings, Bradley Cooper is no Damien Chazelle. In terms of visual blocking and film language, Cooper's approach can't help but feel basic at times. Now to be fair not all debut films from directors can be Reservoir Dogs or Eraserhead, and Cooper certainly shows a ton of promise too, but he falls into a lot of other actor-turned-directors when they make films and go for a safe approach to film-making. His directing style is a lot like how Ben Affleck directs a film, in that it's competent and certainly does capture the feeling of a scene well, but also pretty average too in terms of what's being communicated too. Although the movie doesn't help from the editing, which can be jumbled and at times pretty bad too. The script also has some problems too. While the movie does feel fresh with it's themes, that's largely from the performances and the direction, and certainly not from the script. Whenever the movie addresses the dichotomy of pop and rock feels dated and sticks out like a sore thumb. I wouldn't say the intent of the film is to say that pop is a shallow genre, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I'm also not a fan of how the film ends, which I won't spoil but it felt so forced and really unnecessary other than to provide some cheap emotional manipulation.

I mean a more cynical me would write this movie off as cloying Oscarbait in the style of Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves, but I'm not gonna lie there's a lot that works with this movie that makes me look pass the flaws. It's just a really great and likable film! Go see it if you are interested!

I suppose in a way Star is Born took a sardonic view of Ally's rise as a Beyonce-like starlet replete with back-up dancers doing a song somewhat reminiscent of Sing Ladies, but the world-weary Jackson let her play out her dream, ultimately escaping into a bottle of Tequila and sucking the worm inside.

However, that was pretty much the only takeaway as far as I am concerned, as this film was loaded with cliches when it could have been tailored for the times. Instead, it feels like a badly dated 1970s redux of the classic film with none of the joie de vivre we would expect from two headliners like Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

This is all her movie. It is fun to watch Gaga raw and unplugged in the early scenes of the movie. She has a great voice and is the obvious successor to Barbra Streisand. But, Brad is no Kris Kristofferson, who could both act and sing. Brad does neither very well. He just falls further and further in the hole he has dug for himself one wasted scene after the next.

I would think we are beyond this kind of sentimental tripe but apparently not judging from all the glowing reviews. The industry chews up and spits out these starlets one after the other. No real comment on the system other than to give us the Faustian Rez Gavron who appears to call in Jackson's contract in favor of Ally. Mercifully, Cooper avoids the love triangle that appeared to be coming, but ultimately Ally chooses Rez while hanging onto Jackson like you would an old dog. Too bad because this film could have been so much more.

I haven't seen the other versions, and I know that they felt they needed to keep some of the story beats from the others that I think could have used more of an update, but overall I think it was a successful melodrama. It's a well made film. Expand

Heartbreakingly earnest performances (particularly his, Lady Gaga's, and Sam Elliott's), strong writing and, of course, plenty of memorable (totally original!) songs that will stick with you for long after the credits roll all make for a film that's undoubtedly one of the best of the year thus far. Most striking about this fourth re-interpretation of the original tale, though, is the tenderness and sympathy with which Cooper treats his characters - a ruthlessly money-minded record executive aside (though even that character remains compelling throughout), these are all real people with flaws who make mistakes with good intentions, hurting the ones they love in the process. To find a film that brings to life fully fleshed-out characters and deftly balances tragedy, character-driven romantic drama, and bald-faced critique of the fame machine and what it does to people sucked up into its gears is rare, and Cooper pulls it off with a near-flawless finesse that would have you believe he's been doing this for years.

The past two years have been incredible ones for debut films from individuals outside the traditional realm of film directors - Jordan Peele ("Get Out"), Bo Burnham ("Eighth Grade"), Jonah Hill ("Mid90s") and Paul Dano ("Wildlife") have all shown us just exactly how much promise they hold outside of comedy or acting, respectively, in the future, and with this film Bradley Cooper joins that list as well. The thought of him taking the reins on an entirely original idea is a tantalizing one, and I look forward to seeing much more from him in coming years. 9/10

Despite being a remake, this is hands-down the best movie of 2018, and that includes the superior performances by the lead actor, actress, supporting actor, directing and, of course, the soundtrack. Incredibly impressive and moving; it’s a visceral experience that stays with you long after the final song has played. Expand

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper had great chemistry in this film. Of course, everybody at this point knows that Cooper's a great actor, but not a lot of people know that Lady Gaga is a fantastic actress as well and it shows in this movie. She deserves to be nominated for —hell, she should win— an academy award. She came across so genuine and like a real person that you can relate to. In every scene, she stole it. Bradley Cooper just turned himself into Jackson. He took voice lessons to work on his singing and he learned to play guitar. Bradley Cooper also directed this movie. It’s his first time and it doesn’t show. His directing in this movie seemed so professional like Krasinski, and I hope he keeps directing. Now, this film is a musical, and the music in this film is fantastic. I love all the songs in this film. The lyrics and tone were both meaningful to what was happening in the movie. When a scene was sad the song would be sad along with it. The Cinematography in this film was also stunning. The lighting, like the music, helped set the tone of each scene. If it was going to be crazy the lighting was more intense but it was calm the lighting was calmer. The last thing I want to talk about is the realistic relationship between the two main characters. It doesn’t show a constant happy couple but shows how couples go through ups and downs but stick together no matter what. In the end, “A Star is Born” is a great movie that you should check out. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film gave me an uneasy feeling. Occultist and confidant of Marina Abramovic, Lady Gaga, with her surgically modified face, and Bradley Cooper; friends of Anderson Vanderbilt Cooper (look up Gloria Vanderbilt), with his angry glare undoubtedly have chemistry, as their involvement has since broken up both their private relationships. This is the 3rd time A Star is Born has been remade, it starts strong and has some powerful moments, but it is badly edited and at times forced. The ending is as bleak as the reality of Hollywood. "If you don't dig deep in your **** soul, you won't have legs."
The third remake of the original "A Star is Born" from 1937. A depressed singer, Jack Maine, that while having problems with his mental healthiness, he is also have situations with his hearing, he is getting deaf little by little and deal with those things with alcohol and drugs. A girl, Ally, that sings in bars and have a ordinary job, write some songs and got mocked because of her look, hope that one day she will have a bigger chance to make success. These two met in a bar one day, and from that they will try to have a relationship in their personal lifes and professionally. Directed by Bradley Cooper and written by Eric Roth, Will Fetters and Bradley Cooper.
The story starts showing a bit of how both are, you can get a really nice shot and idea of what is going on with both of them, they do it quickly and well. There is one think that i didn't bought in this first act, wich is Ally saying that she couldn't get a contract because people said that she is ugly, i mean, they didn't made Lady Gaga look bad in this movie, she is still gorgeous, so i couldn't see that happening. You totally believe in their relationship, it does work a lot, you can get why each one would be with other, their chemistry is great. The immersion in some moments are really good, where they got in the show for the first time for example. The ending of the movie is really shocking, what happens is very shocking and the way that it was done was really perfect, it was raw. I found the film way to long, i think that it could have some minutes less, there were some specific moments where i got tired because was the same thing happening over and over again.
The way that they deal with the depression in this movie is very realistic and important, i see in this movie some really situations with drugs, hiding and consequences that you can see a lot in real life, that isn't the success of the money that will fix it.
Bradley Cooper wanted to make us think about people that change who they are, for the success, people in the show business that try to be something else to be more accepted andd easily work there way into the market, a thing that we can say that are some metalanguage in here, because Lady Gaga did somethings like this, so this definely adds value for this one
One thing that i have seen some people discussing about, i'm not quite agree with everything, but, i believe that is a nice thing to keep in the thoughts, wich is if the relationship that Jack and Ally had, has some kind of abusive situations, because an abusive relationship isn't only when someone beats the other, there are a few moments in this film that can make things go in this way, for example, Spoiler: When Jack driver says that he won't accept a no as a answer, or when Jack shows up out of nowhere inside of Ally's bed while she is sleeping, i gotta say, that in these i kind felt strange about what was happening, i wasn't sure, and are other moments, like when he passes the cupcake in her face, some people say that he was just drunk and did that, other people could think that he was actually being very disrespectful, because she was saying a important thing, but those are things that can be arguable, what you think?
Bradley Cooper is amazing, he is just spetacular in here, if not his best acting job is for sure one of the best, he made me believe 100% that he is a drunk man, his job with depression is also something that you can feel, you can feel sadness, the sorrow in him, and how happy he is for meeting someone that could pull him out of there, and also they that he looks, is damn amazing, OSCAR for this man, please, at least a nomination that he damn deserves it, and by the way, he is a really good singer. This is the first time that i see Lady Gaga acting, and i gotta say that she really surprised me very well, she did a very nice job, in sorrow and in hope, happiness and scary, there were one or another moment that for me it felt a bit to artificial, but overall she did a hell of a nice job, and while singing, i don't really have to say anything. Sam Elliot is also very well in here, i found him pretty strong, emotional and have a nice story in his character, you can see that he care. Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle have similar jobs, not big roles, but they both did it pretty well.
The soundtrack in this movie, as expected, is great, they can help the situations with very subtlety or in others very rocky. The original songs are good, i'm not gonna say that i'm still hearing all of them, but there are one or two that really got and are very nice, the Gaga and Cooper duo did worked.
The photography and technic stuff in here are really nice, they use a lot of colors that help us to understand how the character is in the moment, i think that we could have seen some open shots, but considering that it wasn't what the movie is about, i think it is ok.

The movie, just running over two hours, feels the perfect length. Even though the story is somewhat dated [this film is the remake of a remake of a remake], it’s clear that the classic Hollywood storyline can still work when done right. Gaga and Cooper’s chemistry is unmatchable against any film released for a very long time. For me, the contrast in pace between the first and second half allows us to really focus on the second half - to the best portrayal of alcoholism I have ever seen depicted in a film.
The film really is brilliant. Gaga and Cooper are both glistening stars. An instant classic.
