500 Days Of Summer is a very intelligent romantic comedy-drama that has its own art. Unlike most romantic comedies it ends and starts in a unique and wise way, also nice acting from Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel

"(500) Days of Summer" is not a love story. With its funny writing, its compelling performances and its humour, the film is a big metaphor of us. Us and the summer. That summer we wish it would never end.

A refreshing Summer breeze

Starring Joseph Gordon Levitt as Tom; an Architect who writes greeting cards for a living. And Zooey Deschanel as Summer, an average girl who doesn't believe in love. (500) Days of Summer directed by Marc Webb, Provides a refreshing experience to an audience that's over saturated with romantic comedies. Where most follow the same general plot line of, for example Friends with Benefits directed by Will Gluck, of boy meets girl (or the other way around) they fall in love, there love is tested but ultimately wins in the end. (500) Days of Summer in fact does follow this plot format but it differs in two key different ways. It tells the ending upfront, which is they don't end up together, and acknowledges that the rest is predicable. So what the movie does is, it delivers the story non-linearly, which makes the story feel fresh even though its one that we have seen a dozen times.

An important thing to note is that the goal of the movie is not to show a story about people falling in love and getting married. Its to capture what its like to have had a relationship, from the “holy **** moment to the inevitable “your still my best friend”. (500) Days of Summer, gives its audience a new experience by highlighting the range of emotions felt through the course of a relationship. Not the “movie fairy tale” we have all come to expect too see, and struggle to relate too. Its a must watch for anyone in the mood for something that shows its audience something new, but still feels familiar to everyone.

Wise, charming and wholly unusual, "500 Days of Summer" is thankfully helped by competent performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, and Marc Webb's confident directing.

(500) Days of Summer is a very unique movie. It is funny and awe-inspiring, you can't say it is a romance movie because it is actually not, but a story of two friends that are in and out of love.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you asked me what this movie was about I would be baffled at what to answer. There is a beginning, middle and end, but the film jumps around the timeline so much that it leaves you confused about what's happening and where you exactly are in the story.

But the biggest problem is that the movie is basically riding on Joseph Gordon-Levitt's charm. He's really good in this role which I can't say about his co-star. I found nothing likable about Zooey Deschanel's character Summer. Through out the film I struggled to understand what Tom saw in her. The movie tries to make her in this There's Something About Mary irresistible type but it really doesn't work. She's a one note character.

And Chloe Grace Moretz was too adult. Usually I like the mature kid character, but her Rachel felt completely unnatural. It's like the character was originally written to be ten years older.

With that out of the way there are a lot of good things to be said about this film. It was funny and had some meaningful things to say. The final scene with Tom and Summer was great and it brought together the film's point and illustrated it perfectly. It would have been a great ending to the film, but then it goes on and in the final scene Tom meets the girl that will, supposedly, be his one true love. The clichéd ending ruins everything the film had been building up to this point. It's just the type of Hollywoodized BS that Tom was deriding earlier in the film.

But overall 500 Days of Summer is a very enjoyable film. I liked it and would still recommend seeing it despite its flaws.

The whole guy who has no chance with a beautiful woman thing has been done countless times. Music was all right.

Certainly, it is just another indie mambo jumbo movie that actually found its way into the mainstream, but '(500) Days of Summer' really hits you hard with its realism and messages. With a great screen couple, JGL and Zooey Deschanel, the movie adds to the appeal that is already present with the realistic story and artsy details. It also teaches you a lot about life, about people and about relationships and I am certain that it will be a hot topic amongst your friends, as per the moral evaluation of Summer and... the guy JGL's playing (I keep forgetting his name - was it Tom?). I'm certain each of us had such an experience, both male and female, and it was, for me at leas, certainly lovely to see how things can turn out and I learned a lot as it really broadened my perspective and showed me clear signs of potential problems that I can now avoid. For all these reasons - a perfect 10! Expand

This movie surface the risky angle of pursuing"the great love": you could not be her/his perfect love. You care so much about Joseph-Gordon-Levitt's character, Tom Hanson, that you just want to see the rest of his life. He is a hopeful, very forgiving and easily heartbroken character who falls in love with Summer but just doesn't have a chance. This is an offbeat, hilarious, untraditional romantic comedy that doesn't offer a fantasy, but instead shows how fantasy and expectations are always higher than reality, and there is a clever scene that uses a split-screen to show Tom's expectations and reality at the same time. This also has to be one of the most relatable films out there, which makes it a lot more emotionally impactful than your average movie. 500 Days Of Summer is a masterpiece that reminds me why i watch movies, and i have to give it a 10/10. The way it employs the unreliable narration is transcendent, to say the least. Clues to the main character's unreliability are in plain sight, yet we can't help taking every chance to put the blame on Summer, simply because the [love] story is told from a one-sided perspective, that of the selfish character of Tom. With a ridiculous amount of charm, mostly derived from the electric chemistry between its two leads, and a slick non-linear narrative structure, (500) Days of Summer is disguised as a Romantic-Comedy with a new spin on the genre tropes, while it actually serves as a clever subversion of them that effortlessly fools us all. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (500) Days of summer - Definitely worth a rewatch "(500) Days of Summer", directed by Marc Webb is a lighthearted autopsy of a love gone sour from a strictly male point of view. It follows the story of Tom, the nerd hero we all know and love, only this time, we’re supposed to examine his impulses more critically, and see how his seemingly innocent motivations are actually toxic and unfair. “He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life. A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them. That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.” (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Tom). Summer, on the other hand, portrayed by Zooey Deschanel, is a quiet deconstruction of the manic pixie dream girl .But unlike **** Garden State and Elizabethtown, 500 Days wisely grants its MPDG actual independence, and lets the sad-boy find himself only after their relationship is terminated. Although in the end we see Summer evolve as a character, from her saying that she doesnt want a relationship at all,to her getting married, which kinda breaks the rules of a MPDG. The clever thing about this movie is that it legitimately avoids an easy reading, and can be appreciated in a million different ways by a milion different people. I also really don’t think that the famous “you like The Smiths?” scene could be written today without being clouded by some heavy wink-winking. The sincere idea that you could fall for someone just because they like a sensitive/obscure band is no more. What makes 500 Days of Summer so good is that it both enforces that aesthetic while also criticizing it enough to keep the film from dating. The massively succesful plays into this idea as well. Now about the cinematography, it seems pretty sweet and simple at first but then you notice the contrasts in this film, for example the shot sequence of Tom entering the elevator happy and then exiting the elevator deeply unhappy months later. Tom tells his friend Paul about some of Summer’s characteristics that he is in love with. As he speaks of them, we see a montage of shots that shows these characteristics. The montage ends with him describing how he always hears a specific song when he thinks of her (and the song plays in the background). Later in the film, post break up, we see the exact same montage but instead of Tom describing how in love he is with these characteristics, he explains how he hates them. The montage ends with the same song playing and Tom loudly exclaiming how he hates this song. This is comedic but also serves as a reminder of how deeply hurt Tom is by the breakup. Also the use of split screen of expectations vs reality was one of the most interesting scenes in my opinion. 500 Days of Summer, an immensely pleasurable story about love telling the story of two young people with a deep connection but an uncertain future, feels both like a normal rom-com and an abnormal one; it’s not obviously different but it is undeniably so. With its very catchy storyline, this movie is one of the best movies in the 'Romance' genre. With lots of highs and lows, the film is unpredictable and interesting right till the end. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is both a romantic comedy and drama film with very much a quirky feel to it - while it is perhaps most commonly regarded as a romantic film, it isn't really especially 'lovey-dovey' as in a lot of 'chick flicks' and the like. The plot is based very much on the main character (Tom) falling in love with another character, so that hardly breaks any new ground plot wise. There is more emphasis on character development, self introspection, with a lot of self questioning from Tom, plus there are a variety of other characters, some of which provide comedic moments. I quite liked that Summer seemed so certain that 'true love' is a myth - her character is quite cynical and you could say that both characters teach each other things. It sounds and quite frankly is quite cheesy but not in too much of an 'in your face'/over the top rom com stereotyped way. The quirkiness definitely plays in this titles favour, I'd say. I think that both the main characters are fairly easy to relate to, in their own ways.

Cast wise, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom, the somewhat distant and relatively quiet/introverted adolescent, while Zooey Deschanel plays his love interest, Summer. She is portrayed as quite an imaginative, cheery yet understated young woman. They both seem well cast to play quite modern individual characters. Other cast members include Chloe Grace Moretz, Matthew Gray Gubler and Geoffrey Arend.

I liked the soundtrack, which feature some 80s pop hits and is quite jolly. Examples of tracks played include She's Like the Wind by Patrick Swayze, Sugar Town by Lee Hazlewood, You Make My Dreams by Hall and Oates and Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap.

Content wise, this film contains some strong language, one or two instances of mild to moderate violence, scenes with drunken characters and sex references are made throughout, hence its 12 rating.

The film features a fairly quiet narrator who steps in (audibly, not on camera) to add a little bit of background detail to where the relationship or/and characters were at, near the start of certain scenes. I think its fair to say that this is a relatively under stated film, tone wise and I quite liked that as well. For an independent film, its pretty solid - it won't suit, or appeal to, everyone but for what it is, I thought it was quite good - not entirely as predictable as similar films of this genre or type are and with decent main performances.

If I were to criticise it, then the first thing that would come to mind would be the confusing chronology of the plot. It goes to and fro between dates from when Tom first encountered Summer and when things 'hit the rocks' somewhat. The point in this timeline thats covered in the next scene is indicated by what seems like an animated drawing with a day number and a tree thats shown between scenes. It can be a bit confusing, going from dates such as '3' (i.e. day 3 of him knowing of her) to '36' and back to, for example, day '10'. It is a film that could do with a bit of attention being paid to it, to fully follow the plot I suppose. Also, I have to say that there isn't a great amount of 'obvious' comedy - there are a few little pieces and their more of the likely to make you smile to yourself type, rather than loud outbursts of laughter type pieces but thats ok. I feel like there perhaps could have been a chance for more comedy, more witty content possibly?. Having said that, to be fair there is a strong feeling of irony present towards the end of the film, which I quite liked as well.

Yes I'd recommend this film, as I felt it was a good character driven romantic drama/adolescent coming of age type film, of sorts. It is mildly philosophical, it is cheesy and there isn't a massive amount of comedy, only a little bit every while or so which may make you **** but little more but yet I liked this film. It didn't feel especially preachy or completely following the old stereotypes of such rom com type films - it was an easy watch, a fun and interesting watch with a good cast, some good dialogue and I reckon most people who are interested in it, having read the main plot synopsis above, would enjoy it (the only exception being if you can't stand cheesy films or 'rom com' type films at all, although this is less of your usual typical rom com and slightly different, hence the quirky label), hence my recommendation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
