While not as well thought out or paced like other graphic novel based films (Sin City and V for Vendetta come to mind), 300 succeeds at one thing quite admirably, and that's in it's utter lack of effort to entertain. Constant visually stunning images produce near periodic gasps from the audience, creating a movie going experience unlike any this year. Just try to forget the image of the spear at the film's climax, arcing through the air towards the seemingly impentrable Xerses. Or the sight of huge lumbering elephants, falling off of a cliff into the churning waves. Or the end-all-be-all slow motion Spartan battles. All these and more come together to form an experience that dominates anything else out there at the moment. Expand

Excellent move. Great fight scenes. Sure it bends the true historical story but it's a movie based on a graphic novel so what do you expect? Best battle scenes since LOTR.

300 could have been a lot better if they would have used the comic book as a source of ideas, instead of trying to copy from it verbatim. It really bothered me how historically inaccurate it was. I can forgive certain exaggerations and 300 could have been a lot better if they would have used the comic book as a source of ideas, instead of trying to copy from it verbatim. It really bothered me how historically inaccurate it was. I can forgive certain exaggerations and changes for the sake of movie making, but this is blasphemy, this is madness. I did enjoy all the Spartan quips and quotes they worked into the dialogue, as did the audience who laughed at each one. All the actors excelled at their roles, especially considering it was all filmed against a green screen. Gerard Butler was perfect as King Leonidas. Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes was very imposing as well. The thing that really hurts 300 is that it can't decide if it wants to be a historical epic, comic book or video game, so it blends all three genres together with mixed results. But all in all, it should be seen. If for no other reason than to remember the epic battle and those who gave their lives to save western philosophy, rhetoric and democracy. Expand

Either they despised it for its stylized over-the-top-ness (which is only worthy of disdain if the filmmakers *weren't* trying make it that way), or they grudgingly acknowledged that beefcake and a loud soundtrack can make a fun movie. Have we grown so jaded that even true stories about honor and glory can be laughed at? Yes, I know that this was not an historically true telling of Thermopylae. Everyone involved with "300", including Frank Miller himself, knew that. But the *spirit* of the graphic novel and the movie are true to history. And no amount of window dressing, irony, or sarcasm can change the fact that, in the year 480 B.C., less than 1000 Greek soldiers died defending their homeland from an invasion force that numbered in the hundreds of thousands. This movie showed the dedication and strength it took for that to even be possible. Expand

The awesomeness of 300 defies any notion of plot, characterization, or dialogue that a high-brow critic will try to attach to it because this movie doesn't even pretend to have any of those attributes. The film eschews such pointless things as nuance and pacing to become the action movie every 13-year old boy has ever dreamed of seeing. Muscular men decapitating demon-warriors? Check. Elephants pushed off cliffs? Check. Hot women in pointless sex scenes? Check. Patriotic monologues about "freedom"? Check. 300, in other words, is a wet-dream on steroids. What's wrong with that? It was a great film, I'm not sory at all I saw it. Many reviewers have stated the the film is hallow and lacks emotion or substance, and to some extent this is true. This is (suprisingly) not a movie you will be thinking about the next day for any reason other than the cenamatography. Its the first matrix film if you compleatly removed the plot. Its well done and pretty to look at and has exelent action but that realy is the extent of the offer for the most part...but it deffinatly does not feel "hallow", but like I said, you won't be thinking about it tomarow. It tells the story its trying to tell in a very mater of fact manor and it does that well. Its no Gladiator, but its deffinatly worth seeing in a time where most movies are compleate let downs. You will only be unhappy if you go in thinking is another epic, it falls a bit short but if you expect little, you will be pleasently suprised. This movie is diserving of a green score in my book. But what hollywood movie/comic does? Galdiator did not follow the truth. If a movie were to follow the true story of anything, no one would watch it, at least the mass. This movie has a great mixture of art and the art of war. A very poetic movie based off a graphic novel. Along with the violence you have nudity, but not demeaning at all. To me this film reminded me of all the old ancient greek/roman statues we all see. Like Nike adjusting her sandles, the oracle dances in the nude with similar thin silky robes wrapped around her body. One thing that bugs me about the whole Sparta vs Persian debate is that people try to nit pick everything they see. Right now the Iranians are having an uproar because they think the "persians" in the movie depick them as what they used to be. First thing first. This movie does not say "america vs Iraq." This movie is about the 300 spartans that went to war with all of persia. Persia is not Iraq. Sure, they are in the same place...but Persia is dead. This is just a movie off of a Graphic Novel. The monsters in the movie are creative, they remind me of something you will see in a comic book. Anyways, enough of my rant. If you have not seen the movie yet because of the reviews on this site, then you are missing out on a great experience. I went into this movie not knowing anything really and came out excited and ready to see it again. 300 is a masterpiece. Expand

The intensity of the film kept the entire theatre at the edge of their seats. The beginning is a little slow, as are most scenes that explain the exposition and background of a character. Everbody that I have talked to thought it was amazing. And for you people who clame "it was not historicly accurate".. your wrong. Do some research. Didnt you ever pay attention in History class? The movie (and the graphic novel that it is translated from) is pretty dead on with the actual battle. The action was very well choriographed (im too lazy to find the right spelling), and the acting was top notch. The dialog was great, not over bearing, but moving when it needed to be. Go see it for yourself, but keep an open mind. Yes there is lots of cg (computer graphics), but it simpy adds to the whole theme of the story, with dark clouds, and dirty landscapes. It shows the grim situation facing the Spartans. One last note, I find it funny and frustrating, that movie critics are always ripping apart book to movie translations... why? because they leave out too much. They complain that so and so should have been left in.. and so on. Yet Zach Snyder (the director) did a bold thing and directly took the graphic novel and put each page (from what ive read) into the movie. Nothing is left out, and not very much is added, besides some dialog. You think that would be good right? Take a look at Village Voice review... "Frankly, it's the slavish, frame-by-frame devotion to Miller's source material that's the problem."....well I guess some critics just cant be pleased either way.... Expand

And the enjoyment did not come from the story itself. The story was just an excellent excuse to have a visual blast on the big screen. It was just lovely to watch. Violence made aesthetic. Don't get me wrong. As fascistoid stories make good, brainless entertainment I don't think it should be practised outside the big screen. Maybe movies like this should warn potential moviegoers; "This movie, while inspired by historic events (that are blurry in detail and most likely exaggerated by its original tellers), should be viewed purely as enterainment and nothing more. Of course the democrats hate this movie because of the singular line referring the Athenians as "Boy Lovers" and the concept of fighting necessary battles, spreading freedom, and realizing that evil must be confronted. Wow history really does repeat itself. The critics trashed it but talk to the average Joe who saw it and you'll hear unprecedented praise. The cinematography is top notch and the dialogue is excellent, always tongue in cheek, but never seeming to corny or unreal. People have been complaining about the casting of Gerard Butler as King Leonidas but SCREW THEM! Gerard Butler delivers a master performance showing clearly all that an actor can be. His character is so excellently done because of him and he's done arguably one of the best performances EVER. You can tell he's a strong man internally and externally. However while he is brutal, he also has a very thoughtful, sensitive side that comes out often when he is training his son and talking to his wife, who he kind of looks to as a second conscience. Even within the first few scenes you can tell how much time he took getting into that roll. Gerard makes you KNOW who Leonidas is. While others say his Scottish accent is centuries off it fits perfectly and the tone of his voice defines his character. As for the historical accuracy, no there were not actually any elephants and Ephilates wasn't really deformed, but hey, even Heroditus sacrificed some fact for the sake of entertainment when he wrote "The Histories". So acknowledging that comment: ITS A MOVIE ENJOY IT AND TAKE IT FOR WHAT ITS WORTH! You could go on forever talking about how good this movie is and all the nooks and crannies of it but if I have to give one complaint, the only one I can think of is this: They pronounce his name Le-o-NI-DIS. Its pronounced Le-o-NI-THAS. Other than that its flawless. 300 is a movie that delivers the powerful themes of love, strength, morality, justice, and responsibility in an absolutely amazing way. The viewer wont be bored for the next 3 hours (except maybe by some of the political scenes at come up between the battles). Still, the whole "super fighting force" idea is not new and this film wont be the last to use it. I heard a lot of rumors that this is a fascist attempt to show how one race is superior to another. Personally I think that no one should refer to WW2 by watching this film as probably the Germans stole the whole idea from the Spartans (i doubt if it was the inverse). The graphical effects of the film are stunning and the switch between slow motion and normal one are well placed and keep the viewer hooked for the duration of each battle. The climax comes when you see father and son fighting alongside, killing a mass of enemies. This film is far more about male-bonding then something else. People will probably claim its more or less "a homosexual feast" and I would be partially one with their opinion - something about 300 pumped on steroids warriors makes me feel a lot more feminine then usual. In conclusion this film is entertaining and would be difficult to forget. Some of the punch lines will stay with me for the next ten years. This film is good and to say the opposite would be madness. Madness? No! This is Sparta! Expand

This movie will make you believe that it was made by a Spartan. It exagerates in a lot repects but in a dramatic way, an artistic way. Those people who think that there is a lot of violenece , sex and corny dialogue then obviously do not read history and do not understand it. This is Sparta and this is Ancient Greece. Greek Culture is based on the belief in Human Spirit. We are pasionate people and ancient greek were even more passionate. They had to be as Ancient Greece were surrounded by enemies. But this movie appeals to non-Greek as well since is all about Strength and Honour which can be found in every nation. I have to agree that visual effects are that impressive. This movie is not based so much in 3d effect but on color and photography . Afterall this is no Lord of the Ring but a historical event. Music is excellent eventhough not as unique as you may have heard in the trailer Acting is really very good. Only one actor is very well known but the rest just do the job.But you can see that most credit goes to director which made a Spartan , which means straight to the point. The movie as I said is largely based on historical facts even things that may seem exagerations did really happen. That is the position of spartan women, the toughness of Spartan as soldier, the military education of the boys, etc. Of course there are things that differ. Like leonidas looks like 30 years old eventhough he was 50, diffirent helmets and body armor etc. But the purpose is to motivate and bring back Sparta ideals and it does that exactly . This is not a mere pop-corn movie. This is Human faith. This is Sparta. Expand

Ok, ok - there was lots of "CG" blood - but where was the blood that "should have been there" ? There were stabbings, impalings, decaptations and more - blood was "flying around", but apparently it all evaporated !! None landed on anyone, on the ground, on the sheilds - no blood to be found anywhere ! Even the bodies of those killed with arrows lying on the ground there was no blood surrounding the punctures. Ok, so you may say that it was supposed to be "art" and not reality - fine - but for my tastes, it seems like a glaring omission of detail that would have made a bigger impact if they had actually left the blood in. Lastly - I have NO idea what was historically accurate versus what was made up - (and I don't really care) - but what struck me as odd was that why-oh-why, if you "had" hundreds of thousands of Spartans to send to battle, why would you only send 300 ?? If you were the King - just "do" it ! Why be a slaughtered lamb for nothing ?? This lack of logic is just as dumbfounding as that stupid Last Samurai movie, where they all went to battle for the sake of stupidity - and even after losing, life went on as it did before - (basically they fought and died for nothing). You would think that I did not like the movie from this review - but apart from the lack of "logical" blood and the fallacy of the slaughter of the 300 lambs - I thought the movie was thoroughly enjoyable. (Yes, I just said I thoroughly enjoyed it !) Expand
