I have been a fan of Sam Mendes, who conquered me before with his first film "American Beauty" and with "Revolutionary Road" and "Skyfall". These movie at the first instance do not share any obvious elements that allow us to characterize Mendes filmography, but what we can see is that in each of them and especially with 1917, it is that he is creating something so personal, proper, bright and at the same delicate, that as a spectator my only job is to sit and be marveled by his creations. He is a brilliant Director and one of the best for his generation. But not every triumph belongs to Mendes, because Roger Deakins is spectacular, perceptive, intuitive and performs the cynematography with brilliance and pure perfection (of course in the accepted limits, because that's where 1917 can have a bit of flaws and is that it does not have as much surprise factor as gender can sometimes merit it, it can be judged as too safe, but it doesn't matter because you see all the time surprised on how beautiful the film is). On the other hand, his cast led by the George Mackay promise is top-notch and the production design deserves multiple awards (the best of the year). In conclusion, it will be a epic war classic movie for further generation. Just as simple as that. Expand

Mendes masterfully shoots the grueling nature and aftershocks of World War I in an emotionally compelling and artistically moving way. The main leads are very likable and truly drive home the film’s themes about war and death associated with it. The score is great as well and it’s truly hard to find any huge flaws about this film. My favorite film released in 2019 for sure and definitely one of my favorite war movies as well. Expand

Though, with Sam Mendes's "1917" freshly in mind, I find the experience impossible to describe without dropping it at least once. I don't think I've seen a filmic narrative since "The Revenant" that's more adequately aligned itself with the term "journey" than this one has. It is a wild, traumatic, and relentlessly thrilling, near-real-time chronicling of a fateful day in the lives of so many that I find infinitely more epic in scope and theme than any movie I've seen in the past few years -- and some of those had more than triple the budget Mendes had at his disposal. This is what moviemaking is all about. So many moments come to pass throughout where not only the acting and writing, but the camerawork, production design, music, and thematics are firing on all cylinders, welling up feelings of wonderment, terror, anxiety, despair and grief at various points in a magnificently well-paced 2-hour running time. They absolutely do not make movies like this very often, so do yourself a favor and immediately treat yourself to viewing this masterpiece in the biggest theater you have near you. Expand

After 5 minutes you get the feeling, that this movie is special, because it is a long shot and clever done, where you see more and more of the dugout. After 10 minutes I was asking myself, if they are crazy, there is still no edit, and still the first shot. When do they end it? After more minutes I was looking where did they hid the edits. But this is not the only genius thing in the movie. The cameraman made a perfect job and shows you only the things, you shall see to get a certain feeling and the moods in the pictures are changing slowly...but still on one shot. Perfect. In addition you are all the time close to the protagonists. What a organisation to do it with so few shots.
And of course the actors. It is so demanding to avoid mistakes for so long and act for so long.
Ok, but there are some few things I didnt like: There were some unrealistic scenes, not only, that the germans could shoot well, but also their behaviour was not realistic.

You're going to feel every minute of this film because it's a outstanding story and a masterclass in film making.
MacKay and Chapman quickly meld into their characters, you can no longer see the acting and you're thrown headfirst into this incredibly tense film. Throughout 1917 you could hear a pin drop it was that quiet, and my local cinema generally tends to sound something like a zoo at the best of times so for it to be that quiet is almost unheard of. With a nearly sold out screen, every single person was fully immersed in this spectacular War film. Expertly directed by Sam Mendes and complimented by a haunting soundtrack by Thomas Newman. The score is beautiful and it looks like it will be a very close competition between Newman and Hildur Guðnadóttir's Joker soundtrack.
I should have known the cinematographer was Roger Deakins and his decision to film 1917 as a series of long takes is extremely bold and ambitious. At nearly two hours it plays out like one continuous shot, it's truly stunning and I can't imagine the amount of work that went into that. The sweeping camera work is skilfully done and it's near impossible to see the edits. All the behind the scenes work should pay off because I believe 1917 is going to clean up at the Oscars and rightly so. If you've made it this far without seeing the trailer then keep it that way because the trailer does this film no justice. It honestly gave me the impression that this was a generic Oscar bait war movie. This far from the case, 1917 is an original take on a war film and I know it's early in the year to say this but we've already seen one of the best films of the year. A film that needs to be seen on the big screen, so what are you waiting for, get to a cinema and see 1917. Highly recommended.

Flies, maggots,As the protagonists weave their way through a labyrinth of trenches overflowing with thousands of allied soldiers and slowly trek their way into the no-man's land, it hits you. Dead horses, rotting corpses being picked clean. Flies, maggots, rats, and birds scavenge the bodies that litter a barren wasteland, which is poignantly juxtaposed against the peaceful grasslands and forests just a few hundred feet away.

And then you realize that no one being portrayed here is still alive. This movie (and others like it) is society’s collective memory of these wars.

The music is perfect and drives this story all the way through. It never misses a beat and keeps the tension coiled.

In searching for something this movie did wrong, or was in dire need of changing, I found nothing. It is the perfect cautionary tale of the price and horrors of war. 10/10

A film so special that it tops everything you have seen in the last few years. 1917 is one of those films, it is truly special

This is the story of two young soldiers who are sent out on a mission to stop a battle that will cost the lives of 1400 men. I will not talk about anything that happens in the film, as I dont want to spoil it for anyone.

It is one of the best paced films I have ever seen, you truly feel as though you are right there with the soldiers on their mission. It is unrelenting, gritty and you feel the horrors of war. It never gets boring and there is always something different happening.

This film has to win best picture at the Oscar's, as surely no other film from this past year comes close to topping this!

While They Shall Not Grow Old is more accurate by virtue of the use of actual footage and documentary style? 1917 is still inspired by the real accountsFollowing They Shall Not Grow Old, 1917 is the latest WW1 film to hit the silver screen. While They Shall Not Grow Old is more accurate by virtue of the use of actual footage and documentary style? 1917 is still inspired by the real accounts of director Sam Mendes'grandfather. Mendes has made it clear that 1917 is a fictional story with fictional characters. However that doesn't mean it doesn't feel authentic. Much like They Shall Not Grow Old; 1917 gets much of it's authenticity from the way it is crafted. Filmed/manufactured to give the impression of one long continuous shot, you are made to feel like your right there with these characters. Your there in the claustrophobic confines of the trenches as well as the misery and muck of no man's land.

If the film has one flaw? It's that the characters themselves aren't all that well developed. But given the way the movie is filmed I am willing to forgive that because of how ambitious it is. It's also fair I think that these two men are just two ordinary men that are given a herculean task (as shown in the trailers). They are caught up in events bigger than themselves. We do get small snippets and vignettes that give us an idea of what these characters are like. But don't go in expecting something like Band of Brothers where you see characters grow and change over the course of several episodes. It's not the underlying point of this movie. There are some spectacular moments in the film that make you sit on the edge of your seat. Again I don't think you'd get the same experience if not for the way it was shot. This is a stunning technical achievement and a definite Oscar contender for cinematography.

This is an incredible piece of cinema!!!

This movie is really a ride with sort of a dreamlike feel to it as the characters are taken from one unpredictable situation to another unable to know if they'll encounter friend or foe.

Director Sam Mendes already showed in Skyfall that he commands an excellent visual style but this is a whole other level. The movie is filmed to give the illusion of one full tracking shot. Every moment the camera looks like it's following the characters. It is quite an achievement. Besides the tracking, the film also does a great job of deciding what elements of the scene to focus on.

The scenery in this is a thing of ethereal beauty. The characters travel through a constantly shifting landscape, from trenches to abandoned farms and so forth. Even the worse of environments look good. In my opinion, the war torn town at night scene is one of the best images in film history.

The one aspect that didn't always quite work for me was the music. Don't get me wrong. it's not bad. The issue is that the tracking shot gives a very natural, engrossing feel to what's going on. Suddenly, the music will boom loudly and take you out it.

Overall, I highly recommend this. This is a truly stunning flick.

It's time some critics checked in their preconceived notions about what a film is as they pass the box-office. This was not a "war is hell" movie. The so-called "single take" was not a gimmick. In fact, this was less a war movie than an allegory about life itself. Slow to start, the first person perspective draws in the viewer,so we share the unfolding events and incidents alongside the two Tommies charged with their mission. It bears many similarities with Dunkirk (which was also more than just "a war film" and certainly not just a recount of a historical event).

I was gripped, moved, drained, not just during the movie, but afterwards as well. It was not an easy watch (as Little Women was, also excellent, but for different reasons) , but I will want to see it again.

Straight up, it's a war film masterpiece. It'll be the best movie of the year for a long time until I see more movies, but if anything, it'll be in my top 3. It's my favorite war film by far. The story is so humane, gutwrenching, and pure. The immersion and realism this film goes for is stunning. I swear, they shot the film in 2 halves. I don't think there was a single cut until a certain part of the film. And that's a very far point into the movie itself. If anything, there was probably one transition that I never noticed. My eyes were so locked on the screen and I just drifted into the movie as another soldier watching the events. My heart was pounding, I was fearful, but overall, I was so stunned and stoked that this movie lived higher than my anticipations. The climax sends chills, major intensity and squirms, and overall, sheer beauty with the cinematography. The visuals were incredibly captivating, the acting was stellar, and the production design was awesome. 1917 deserves all the awards it'll get. And that's saying something. Expand

With a magnificent combination of excellent editing, superb acting and an outstanding score from Thomas Newman, 1917 is a rare example of absolute cinematic perfection. Like 2014s Birdman (A personal favorite of mine) 1917 has been, to my delight cut so cleanly it gives the illusion of a single take and like Birdman, it works exceptionally conveying a feeling of realism and desperation never before seen in a film. The movie is to my understanding shot entirely in Scotland, and Mendes makes use of the stunning landscapes whilst also creating his own sets providing a dramatic and even shocking contrast between the two. For example, The film opens in a luscious field full of plants and other wildlife, but very quickly as our protagonists enter the trenches you are introduced to the desolate wastes of No mans’s land. Thomas Newman really does a fantastic job with the movie’s soundtrack, which feeds wonderfully into the already immersive atmosphere. It strikes the perfect balance of being calm and soft in some instances, or extremely intense in others. Another thing that really stood out was the incredible sound design. Here, every gunshot has weight, causing each and every one to make you question whether or not it landed.
The cast is also brilliant, with each actor giving stellar performances and countless cameos from well renowned figures such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Mark Strong and Richard Madden. The story remains consistent throughout the film keeping you guessing and on the edge of your seat at all times, but some could (maybe) argue that there were some minor pacing issues, but other than that there is no more I can say.

Every second on screen deserves full attention, you can't take a break from it and you don't want to.

Probably the greatest filming and editing masterpieces ever made, even better than Birdman in my opinion. Mr. Newman's score puts you in the mood with the story, fantastic script and acting from every major character and extras. Do yourself a favor: just go and see it on the big screen. You won't regret it!

George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman are sensational, they are very clever interpretations that unfortunately did not get recognition in the awards season. Another aspect that deserves to be mentioned is the photography of this film, which is wonderful, the scenes are constantly showing the open and wonderful environment. The sound work is very well done. 1917 deserved the 10 Oscar nominations, it is an impeccable work of direction, acting, cinematography, sound, editing and soundtrack. 1917 is a film that deserves to be seen by everyone. I think this is Sam Mendes expertise to give all stories united in just one single shot, so the audience can feel themselves to be like that main role, to see the war, to face the combat, or to fall down, shooting, etc. This idea of camera can be trend for movie industry, especially in war movies in the next 10 years. This movie is helped by the appearance of several actors who are serving in war movies, such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, and Ralph Fiennes. This movie was so deserved to have high appreciation like Oscar or Golden Globe, although there are many critics and doubters upon it, this movie is still the masterpiece in its genre. The 'single-shot' style puts us right in the action as we follow two British soldiers tasked with warning a battallion that the attack they are planning is a German trap design to lure them in. The set design is simply brilliant, the dead horses, rotten corpses embeded in the dirt, destroyed trees and houses makes it clear that the war has not just taken its toll on the land, but became a part of it.

The story-telling is another major highlight as are its characters, they are flawed, make silly mistakes but they are also compassionate, kind and with loved ones that they hope they will all be returning to, even if that increasingly becomes a vain hope - ultimately they are human.

Ultimately it is a masterpiece in story-telling that anyone who is passionate about cinema should see at least once in their life-time.

In the age of the cell phone, TikTok, meme & the quick & dirty convenience of it all, it's no wonder certain directors pine for the big screen.

And if there's ever a movie made for that big screen, it's the cinematic masterpiece, 1917.

Between the direction of Sam Mendes as well as his writing along w Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the immensely massive cinematography from living legend Roger Deakins, to the tick tock of a ticking clock score by Thomas Newman & the burning heart of British Lance corporal William Schofield played by George MacKay; their collaboration created a singular unique film which slows the heart as it races into the next second & then melts to a chill all the while it's exploding.

There are a rare breed of film which fully submerge you into another world that once the closing credits roll & you walk out of the theatre in a daze, you're still there, in that other world.

1917 is that film.

And it's befitting to be the last great film released just before the pandemic & theatre shutdowns. If you missed it, purchasing the largest television you can afford is apt & necessary. After all, 1917 was made for IMAX, not iPhone. Run don't walk to view this instant classic, tick tock tick tock.

In a general sense, 1917 is somewhat reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan in that it gives its characters a clear goal with an easily discernible outcome. The film employs a technique that creates the illusion that everything is happening in real time with long takes. While this technique has been used in films with both small (A Boy. A Girl. A Dream) and larger budgets (Birdman), often with mixed results, it is very effective in this film. Even without cuts in the middle of each scene, the camera and action work so well together that the audience is always seeing what they need to see. That along with a very sophisticated use of CGI, makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the action. The result is an emotionally satisfying film with strong performances that doesn't let its use of technology get in the way of telling a good story. At just under two hours 1917 is the perfect length. You won't be bored and perhaps you will have a greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by soldiers in battle. Afterwards, checkout Peter Jackson's powerful documentary about World War I, "They Shall Not Grow Old." Expand
