For those that haven't watched this, I will not spoil anything. All I'm going to say is I want a sequel to this movie. It will never happen but my goodness clearly the director did not know what they stumbled upon, You were so close to greatness.

But anyway, I was searching for a Sci-Fi movie and I finally found a good one, It makes use of the pre/during apocalypse stage of... well the apocalypse.

It twists and turns your mind, it's spectacular. But it Is for my taste short, however, I think the length of the movie helps for a direct sequel, But Like I said it will never come. I NEED MORE OF THIS.

8/10, This movie should have been 4 hours or had a sequel to just round up the Idea, they were going for, it would be a perfect film, in fact, if they kept going in the film, right at the end I would have brought it up to my top favourite Sci-Fi movies ever.

Mary in this film does an amazing job, here is another example of a good female character, who earns her personality and character, through the struggle she and the audience have to put up with, this is what films today lack when it comes to female leads.

Man, I'm pretty salty that we'll never get a sequel, anyway a good movie, very well paced, acted, and everything, just obviously the end hits you and you just want more, kinda leaves you unsatisfied but in a good way.

While "Cloverfield" was a dizzying handheld camera event, "10 Cloverfield Lane" is a third-person narrative shot in standard fashion. The film is set primarily in an apartment, on the open road, and in a fateful bunker, and succeeds in creating a sense of claustrophobia with every door locked by unforgiving metal and a lack of privacy.

John Goodman is excellent as Howard, the seemingly crazy owner of the bunker who is a walking enigma. It is unclear whether his story of devastating attacks outside is true, and what his personal story may be. Goodman's portrayal of Howard is perfect, with a blend of sinister goodwill, anxiety, and a seething temper boiling beneath the surface. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is also faultless as Michelle, the defiant, weary hostage who starts out frantic and ends up scheming and playing the long game. John Gallagher Jr.'s character is just okay, not adding much to the movie.

The film is a slow burner, building tension and suspense, but I found the overly long sequences of nothingness to drag on and detract from the overall movie experience. As the third act picks up, it feels too little, too late, and too contrived to be a worthy payoff for the buildup. Additionally, many of the situations in the film feel too convenient, such as the shower curtain being a perfect fit for a fallout suit, the earring that is found, and the radio turning on just by the precise road sign.

While "10 Cloverfield Lane" has a great premise of whether to trust the menacing man who has entrapped you or try your luck outside in the potentially deadly air, the buildup doesn't pay off in the end. The performances by Goodman and Winstead are the saving grace of the film, otherwise, it would score lower.

______________________________________________________

One time you think this is happening, other time you think something else is happening.

The twists and turns writer put in the story and the way director executed it, hands off. The cast also did good job. You can easily connect with them. Only sad thing that I came to know was that this story isn't getting sequel as of now. This story needs a sequel but the next sequel has an entirely different story which broke my heart.

Overall, it's a great watch. Even better than the first one, though it has no connections with the first one. I would recommend it to everyone and don't get spoiled before watching it.

It appears the climactic eye-candy and change in the tone in the last few minutes somehow made critics (and some viewers alike) ignore the other 90% of the film? While the initial build-up was solidly structured, the film devolves in the second half into a haphazardly poor attempt at "subverting" expectations ("he's a good guy, no he's a bad guy, yes he's a good guy, uh oh he's a bad guy"). Kudos to the performances though, Winstead and Goodman are indeed amazing to watch and make the film bearable. Expand

I am a big fan of the first film; with its shaky first person, found footage camera work, navigating through torn NYC was very captivating for me since it reminds me of a level design of video gaming.

For this movie, I was expecting more of the same. Oh boy was I wrong. They literally swapped genres for this movie. This movie had nothing to do with Cloverfield until the very end. What's John Goodman got to do with Cloverfield? Nothing. No doubt he has great acting, but undoubtedly if this movie didn't have the title Cloverfield attached to it, it could have been a box office failure. I was really expecting more like the first movie. I was expecting them to go out and see what it's like outside of the bunker. That only happened in the end. Nothing in the movie was sci-fi from beginning to nearly the end. Nothing. Highly disappointing if you expected the movie to be like the first one. It might be good if you expect the movie to a psychological thriller with a Cloverfield title attached.

I think there were a couple of loose ends in the script. Like at the end (for example,) when the girl exits the bunker and it's broad daylight - but 45 seconds later, somehow it's dark??? The feat of creating a complex, strange, unique, and immersive world full of mysteries using the sheer power of story-telling has never been accomplished to this extent in cinema history. Not even the highly impressive The Man from Earth can match it in that regard.

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to appreciate this form of art, which is why this movie isn't talked about in the same way as, say, Alien. Which is fine, because everyone has their own tastes and preferences, and even I personally prefer movies which make use of both story-telling and visuals. However, if you are the type of person to lose sleep for days over a book that you had read in a couple of hours, and still can't escape the world that it has built even when reality comes crashing down, then this is an absolute must-watch for you. Not saying that this movie in particular will have that effect on you, but you will certainly get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

It’s a film which has neither captured the essence of a thriller, nor held back the ebb of Paramount’s flops.

The film, if launched in 2020, would be called “a facade of vicissitudes in the time of epidemic”. However, Hollywood does not sell virtues; virtues from the USA is the panacea. Imagine, a poster of a haunted house, a trailer of a woman who is facing up with an apparently psycho uncle as well as a mysterious attack, and a front logo of Paramount, would you be convinced to go to the cinema? The answer depends on how much you’d like to pay for a sluggish, halfway thriller carried by clumsy performances from John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Needless to say, even if you are not a watcher of Cloverfield, and the suddenly dropped trailer which uncovered its stealth production, your viewing experience of 10 Cloverfield Lane would not change a bit. There is no distinct connection between these two films. The setting is recycled that the earth is being attacked by aliens and affected by a widespread chemical poison. However, based on an obviously low budget and an inexperienced director, the film moves awkwardly, with a few splendid scenes and a combination of horror and sci-fi, which ironically accounts for the blockbuster of the film correspondingly. The history begins with The Cellar, the script by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken, and later it was retrofitted to place it in the world of Cloverfield. The beginning of the film is a terrifying car accident, by no one telling how it happened. After Michelle (Winstead) wakes up in a cellar, she finds herself chained to the wall, and the kidnapper Howard (Goodman) comes and claims to be her savior by notifying that the world outside is contaminated, full of breathless air. Then the story goes as if Alfred Hitchcock is directing, or should we say another piece of Catch Me If You Can. The No.1 advantage of this genre, like a lot of films we’ve watched, is that the psycho is indescribable, just like Howard. Both his appearance and behavior, from the very beginning, do not earn any trust from Michelle. She’s determined to run away, esp. after she meets Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.), another so-called lucky guy who was saved by Howard on that doomsday. Something between Emmett and Michelle has suggested that the cellar built by Howard is not as simple as for just such an apocalyptic occasion. However, the failure of her escape attempt has proved the terror briefed by Howard and dispelled her thought to be a fugitive.

The game has just begun. Howard, Emmett and Michelle live together like a family, a strange family. The thrilling part of the film focuses on John Goodman’s performance. As a maniac, he’s not that noticeable. He’s like a puzzle waiting to be unlocked. Wavering between an uncle next-door, who strongly believes that, since he’s saved Michelle and Emmett, they should worship him as God, and a misogynist, whose intentions are complex and expectations from Michelle and Emmett in return conflicted, John Goodman, though has nothing to do with aliens, has mirrored the twist in the dialogue-free final act, which has retrofitted the traditional thriller into the sci-fi universe. It works.

The return of 10 Cloverfield Lane is great, in the case of a horror of lesser greatness. I watched it on the day I wrote this film critic. It’s been four years later. Both rating and ROI, according to the data on IMDB, are dazzling. A period of four years has witnessed the outburst of horrors, exemplified by Get Out,2017, and the downfall of Paramount, by a number of flops. To say that 10 Cloverfield Lane has started the Pandora's box of Paramount is not justifiable. However, as a novice film critic, my rating would be 6.2/10, on account of facts that it’s a film which avoids the important and dwell on the trivial, that the atmosphere of the film is not as horrifying as that if both horror and sci-fi parts are strengthened, that the antagonist should be more of Alfred Hitchcock than Steven Spielberg.

THE END

The Way to Breathe
By Oscar Young

The night is far
Yet can see the star
I keep asking myself
What’re those Elf

The air is dark
When does it embark
Away from serenity
Tell me their identity

I find the way to breathe
In a world being seethed
Hope is behind groping
Whenever there is no forever

The way I live
Something has to give
Is he the last one
After everything is done

Tomorrow comes late
Unclear is my fate
A piece of my wish
We are the world unfinished

I find the way to breathe
In a world being seethed
Hope is behind groping
Whenever there is no forever

The story overall it is really fine, they first try to give us a mystery, for those that already know the Cloverfield franchise that mystery won't work, because these people will already know what is true or not about what is going on outside, but for those that are going to watch it without knowing what the series is about, i think that it will be really nice to figure things and never be sure of the outside world, just like the characters.  Wich lead us to say that the characters would be extremely important to work, there are only three characters to interact and they had to be really good and different, and that is exactly what it is, each character have his function for the narrative and all work, you truly care about what is going on. The sequence of facts feels really natural and well done, you first got a mystery from the character, Michelle, perspective, wich works, than you got slowly introduced to the situation by Howard's words, and then got to know the whole bunker and it's rules in a way that you understand very well without getting any boring. The character of Emmett does give a nice personality contrast to work with Howard and for Michelle, the chemistry works fine. During the course of the story there are some really good plot twists, while it goes it does give some more layers to the characters and things got way more scarier and definely got my attention more and more, you got to know the characters more deep and caring more and more for them. There are a few moments where things felt, not just rushed, but the characters could have said something better, like invent things and use creativity, like it was already shown that they had creativity, doing something smart instead of just tearing things apart that easy. There some dialogues where things feels a little unnatural.More at the end there are a big tone difference compared to the whole movie, i do think that in some moments at the ending things went well and in others it got lost, there are somethings that felt just to easy or didn't really made me buy, but in overall the ending worked for me. I read another person saying about a metaphor in this story, and i found it really interesting, so i'm gonna put it in here.  So it will have some SPOILERS in this paragraph. It consists in facing the unknown, getting out of the comfort zone. The person said that the characters would represent characteristics from the character Michelle, Emmett would represent hesitation and fear, Howard accommodation and safety. The movie talks much about umconfortable/safety for being in a bunker. All the attempts to leave the bunker are frustrade by Howard. And only when Emmett, the hesitation, dies, the protagonist can overcome Howard and leave the bunker to face aliens, wich would represent the unkown itself. So it would be like she overcame the hesitation, get away of the sense of safety in the comfort zone for literally confront the unkown. The last scene would reinforce this, when she hear in the radio that a city is already under control and Houston are still in war and in need for help, and then she chooses Houston to go.  END OF SPOILERS. The technique aspects in here are very good, it can give different senses for who is watching, a claustrophobic moment or a discovering with open plans. The camera movimentation and closing up are really good. The sound design are also nice, hearing things depending from where they are was really important, the mis-en-scene was good, you could have a good idea of how it would feel to be inside of that bunker. The design of the whole place is really nice, you can get where is where or where they are going, it is fluid. The soundtrack is really good, we do hear a lot of songs in this movie as well, and they really worked fine, it helped on giving the scenes some structure. The acting works really fine. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is great, she gave many aspects in here, trying to be conviction, being extremely nervous but holding it down, she really convinces me in everything she did, very good performance. John Goodman is also very fine in this film, he first give a calm character that is trying to do the right thing, but you can clearly see that he is unstable, that he could do anything in any moment and that gives some thriller to the movie. John Gallagher Jr. have a more trickster and joking kind of way, his character isn' much challenging but he did fine. Expand

10 Cloverfield Lane

Trachtenberg's smart horror drama is compelling and generous, if sinister. As it was in previous installment, this franchise thrives on the uncertrainity aspect of it. And this is something that Trachtenberg has extracted that piece of Reeves's idea and foliated it into a thrilling ride that gives you the chills of a free falling roller coaster. And just like that experience the characters in here too are not in control of their life. It puts three chess pieces on the board that is trapped with spooky things, on that note this is a challenging plot to pull off.

And even though it circles back to the origin, the middle section, the root, the core of the feature is what's genuinely inspiring. It somehow resembles with Garland's Ex Machina, since the politics it plays with the characters that it fiddles like puppets, is a nail-biting intense drama. There is also a bit of ease on the narration and even though it is confined in basically a room, it definitely expands its idea beyond that. Elizabeth Winstead; the protagonist, lives up to her character with her convincing portrayal of a scared and a lost girl trying to figure out her environment.

But the character to look up to, is Goodman, his stellar performance of a complex and more importantly three dimensional survivor is worth hoping in on this ride. His ideologies are drawn from the war he has seen and tactics challenging to its current generation, a masterstroke by the writers. Ticking for around hundred minutes, it fluctuates a lot from being grounded and practical to being profoundly mediocre and amateur. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a win-win for the writers to live up to its franchise hype, but in terms of horror it falls short handed at times.

I first saw this cool start-up movie cloverfield in 2008 and then I learned that it was a serial, and there were a total of 3 movies linked to each other with small details. After this movie I will watch the movie cloverfield paradox.

Now let's go movie. Michelle, the heroine's lover we see fighting and collecting things and going to one place but we never find out where it goes We're constantly confused throughout the movie but we take almost all the answers we just do not know where Michelle went, I think it would be nice to have information about it.

then we open our eyes in a shelter, I do not know how many hours have been left unconscious. Was it during the movie that it was invasive or not?Like Howard is bad or good. There's a constant dilemma throughout the film that can amaze you anytime A great movie full of surprises. There may already be some question marks on the entire cloverfield series that have never been squeezed into a wonderful mystery bunker that is a completely different mystery.

It's a bit confusing in the final stages and it sounds a bit absurd to me, but the movie is really nice.

This is a very intense movie and a really interesting half sequel to Cloverfield(2008). This takes the series in a very interesting way. I loved the first one and this is also a really good movie. Very Different but Very Good.

I don't know why I put off watching this film till now. It's great!

One of the best-paced and written thrillers I've seen. Although a lot of time is spent in an underground bunker, nothing feels slow or unnecessary. Also, does a good of job of including humor without boggind down the tension.

Camerawork and musical selections all complement the work. Both Elizabeth Mary Winstead and John Goodman are on their A-game, but it Goodman who steals the show with a nuanced character who can be both unnerving and sympatheric.

Dont' listen to those saying the ending is tacked on. The ending takes you completely by surprise and is a unique way to end a film like this.

A girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) survives a car accident and wakes in a nuclear shelter run by older man (John Goodman) who claims that something major has happened overground and they can only survive by down here.

There’s another survivor as well (John Gallagher Jr.), who seems more together mentally, but still agrees with the owner…

„10 Cloverfield Lane“ was released in March 2016, and got a wide release, so there’s good chance that you have seen it already or heard about it.

For those lucky ones who still have a chance of seeing it fresh, I am not gonna write much.

Watch it and enjoy, because this is a movie lover’s delight – original, tightly written and well played thriller that builds suspense and keeps you guessing till the very end.

Most of the story takes place in underground shelter with just three actors yet it never feels like a play. It’s a proper movie, and strikingly good one at that.

Freakin’ loved it! Would have been a tight one even without…

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The actors held this predictable film together. Hence a 3. There was only 3, maybe a fourth that didn't count. Predictable because this film was a The Divide rip off, it had ripped its ideas off of the Divide and then it pissed all over the end, with some kind of stupid given away hinted at all throughout, War of the Worlds ending, instead of the hope lost in The Divide, no not superwoman, how freaking predictable. Those Alien rip off, crossed with a house dog, flying in a district 9 drone crappy metal, and teeth, what, that then gets independence day'ed, with some War of the World tentacles was a joke and the gas, what, green crop duster gas, no wonder there was survivors, I mean stupid. Her escape was a joke. That Hazmat suite was a joke go duckie, what a quack. Him flailing about after being melted by acid, with the horrible pounding music from Home Alone to somehow be outside of the exploded bunker was a joke. The tension had built up well prior, credited to the actors. Except the dumb beginning whahaha, gee I wonder if I gets a signal, whahaha. What was that metal scream/squeak every time the door creaked, it was jarring.

But no it was for 12 year old's, I mean what, that was the cert on my sky programming, rendering it immune to the watershed, containing graphic violence, kidnapping, torture, swearing, psychotic behavior. Why was this film for 12 year old's, because every cinema release today is for 12 year old's, it makes even more box office money. Even if this film's content is definitely not for 12 year old's, and it should have ended so much better than its comedy wrecking what little horror its ripped off ride had not.

This is a film that keeps you guessing on how things may play out and who is telling the truth. All the actors do a amazing job and Jon Goodman stands out from the rest as this very hard to figure out character, You are always trying to guess what his intentions are. This movie isn't "Scary" like some may think, It'll have you on the edge of your seat but more in suspense and not for being terrified. This film also doesn't much of a tie to the original Cloverfield so keep that in mind. But I found this film amazing, It let's you try and figure out things for yourself and has tons of build up for a ending that feels mostly worth it. With the trailer coming out so soon before release and little known about the story, I went in knowing little of what to expect. Well, 10 Cloverfield Lane turns out to be a great, unique movie.

The story of a woman ending up inside a bunker to what seems like an abduction turns into something much more unique and original. Is this an abduction or is there an outside attack? The best part of the story is the vast amount of twists and turns. When the story seems to be going in one direction, the plot suddenly twists to something else that would question what just happened before. Information, plot details, and backstories are inferred, not plainly told. Because of this, the story is very investing and leaves the audience guessing as to what will happen next. Things that didn't seem logical before became logical and vice- versa. The tension is high and there are some jump- scare moments. Another great thing about the story is how original the whole thing is. There's nothing else like it and the unique plot plays off well.

The acting is also very good as John Goodman pulls a fantastic performance in addition to everyone else. However, there are two major issues. First, while the music score is nice, it's also quite overbearing and falsely hypes up the tension. In addition, the pacing is a bit uneven. There are a few dead spots where nothing much happens and it sucks away some investment from the story. All in all, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a highly original film with great acting, plenty of plot twists, and lots of tension; all wrapped up in an engrossing story.

Background: I have seen the slightly related Cloverfield film. That film was poor and not worth your time, despite what critics may say.

Pros:
(1) It's a great thriller, claustrophobic and filled with questions.

(2) Great acting from the two main actors.

Cons: The bit at the end seemed like a re-shoot done after the main filming was completed, just so the company can put the 'Cloverfield' word in the film's name and linked it with the earlier film. Without this bit, the film would have gotten a 5/5 from me. Shame!

Who would think the film is great? All adults.
Who would think the film is only so-so? No one
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It's worth it to watch it in the cinemas.

WhenIt seems that everything JJ Abrams touches is gold. The rebooted Star Trek movies and the Force Awakens have shown us the best Sci-Fi in movies. He's been described as a new Spielberg and that definitely isn't an understatement. When Spielberg is gone we'll have an old JJ to fill his seat in the Oscars. This film caught my interest not from the low budget soon to be critically acclaimed look of it but from the attractiveness of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She certainly deserves to be top tier star but should she be? We would lose that feeling of uniqueness about her and would no longer feel like a well kept secret. And in a way that goes for the future of the franchise as well. The end seems to be going in a direction that could lose the mystery and identity of the best parts of this film. JJ said he has a "very cool idea" in mind for a future title.Should it be a higher budget grandiose direct sequel or something contained and thought-provoking like this? I have to go with the latter. But unless it's something we have not seen before in the Cloverfield Universe, I have doubts that the hypothetical next movie could affect us in such a good way again. Maybe we've seen all it's tricks. In this rare situation, we'll just have to take his word for it.
P.S. I found it fun to imagine this movie takes place in the DC movie universe :)

For a movie relying on its suspense it didn't have very much tension in it.
Every time it had a scene that should of had tension, all I could think was, "wait that scene from the trailer with this character hasn't happened yet, they're going to be fine".
I had no investment in the characters, when a scene where something could happen to someone comes up I didn't care weather they would make it or not.
The ending felt like the half way point of the story, and seemed like it was done that way to set up a sequel.

ThatIt's a slow paced thriller. That's not really a bad thing. Often times the best thrillers are slow paced, as it allows for the director to deliver moments of ever increasing urgency that build up the tension as effectively as possible. That isn't so much the case here. Director Dan Trachtenberg seems to be perfectly okay with simply leaving our lead actress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in a weird, mysterious, and possibly dangerous situation that never really builds up anything until it goes off the deep end in it's finale.

It's a suitably creepy set up and John Goodman does a great job at keeping us guessing with his menacing performance. However what keeps the movie from having us on the edge our seats is that it's got no balls. It never does anything to really freak us out. Make us feel like these characters are in danger. At least not until right at the end. But at that point the whole thing is basically over. To make matters just a bit worse, it takes a goofy turn with it's final act.

Of course goofiness isn't something I should have been too shocked about. 10 Cloverfield Lane does make sure you know it has a sense of humor about itself. Most of the time it's knowing winks to the audience are used to bring a more human feel to the situation. Make it more believable and amplify what little tension it does have to keep us watching. A reminder that things could go batcrap at any second. Other times it just makes us laugh and causes some of the tension to go away. That's rare though.

Still, I can't give the movie credit enough for John Gallagher Jr. I know Goodman is the John everybody is raving about, but Gallagher is the one who caught my eye. He further helps to ground the film in reality and is just all around likable. The whole cast is fantastic, but it was Gallagher in his role reminiscent of a (younger) Jason Sudeikis that made the movie for me. It also helped that he was the only character onscreen who was fleshed out in any way.

That's another thing that takes away from the urgency of the situation. We are supposed to be worried for and care about Winstead's character, but we literally know nothing about her. We know only a little bit more about Goodman's character, but that's okay. The sense of mystery about him amplifies the potential danger. It really only hurts Winstead and unfortunately she's our lead. It also makes it odd to see her survival skills when they literally pop out of nowhere. How does she know how to do this stuff? Beats me. The movie doesn't tell.

So yeah, it's a thriller that doesn't have much tension. It's not completely devoid of it thanks to the mystery, but there isn't enough to please hardcore genre enthusiasts with lots of experience with movies of the like. Whether or not it's big reveal at the end will be a joke to you or not, I cannot say. It's definitely unexpected. However I personally thought it was kind of too over-the-top. Kudos to the movie for doing it though. Nice bit of originality to be honest.

There just needed to be more teeth to this film. Something to deliver some real bite. The set up was there, but it ultimately didn't deliver too much. It's not a terrible film and it's got fantastic performances all around. However it's on the verge of being so much more. It's like it needed a push to really take it somewhere and just never got one. So ultimately it's a decent, but ultimately unfulfilling thriller with nice production and a talented cast. Do with that info what you will.

Unfortunately, the plot weakens towards the end, and the movie instead starts to present itself as a sci-fi/action movie with an ending that leaves viewers puzzled about how exactly it got there. A fantastic first 90 minutes, strengthened by the performances of the three lead actors and small thrills, helps make up for this somewhat, but those looking for an exciting and logical ending will be highly disappointed. Adds a new perspective to the original film yet it retained the mystery.

Initially it was called 'The Cellar', but later it became spin-off to 'Cloverfield'. It was a regular type screen narration, unlike the first film as a found footage style. But if you the original film fan, especially monster film fan, you might end in a disappointment. Because it was a psychological-thriller-mystery than the sci-fi-action-adventure.

Only the final act determines where and how it actually connects to the Cloverfield universe, yet not very evident other than the clue the title had given and the filmmakers insisted that is indeed from the same franchise. Because I felt, it was very close to other alien invasion films like 'Skyline' and 'Battle LA' or even the latest 'The 5th Wave' than the 'Cloverfield'.

I surely enjoyed this film, like an another crazy bunker hideout theme and something which is quite similar to the recent 'Room'. Since they have revealed its association with the 'Cloverfield', I expected different kind which was actually insanely misled everybody. If there won't be a sequel, then the link between the two films are unnecessary, so I'm waiting for that. But still a very good film without those mix-ups. And I recommend you all to consider it as a one-off film in order to have a great watching experience.

Another limited cast film with barely a four characters in it and shot in a single location that cost just $15m, but earned in multiple folds. All the credit goes to the marketing tactics to tie it up with the 2008 blockbuster. It would have also done great independently, in the end everybody, including fans and filmmakers are happy for what it is now.

The suspense was so good, but it was carried out for too long. The third act picked up its pace like hell which was obviously anticipated since 'Cloverfield' hooked to it. When everybody was thinking of monsters, it is going to delivers differently and that's how the film fairs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Oscar goes to the promotions team who created the trailer for this film- parading it as a tense thriller revealing the darker side of the impeccable John Goodman. It's true...something is coming, but it's not an Academy Award. For 90 minutes, this movie is an entertaining psychological thriller and then it seems the producers gave up, leaving the audience with unanswered cliffhangers, explosions...oh, and let's throw in an alien encounter. Bizarre is the only word I can use to describe it. Shame on the makers of this film for being more concerned with selling the story than actually delivering on that promise. I am 100% sure people are being paid to give it good reviews because there's no other logical explanation...unless, of course, an alien spewed poisonous gas to scare them into submission. Expand

First of all, it is a great stand alone piece: if you like thrillers, specially combined with some soft sci-fi - a la Shyamalan's Signs -, regardless of not knowing much about the Cloverfield mythology, you will have a great experience. There is a lot of mystery and the movie puts the viewer side by side with the protagonist in trying to figure things out. So if you enjoy taking the film experience similar to a game experience, where you receive cues as the movie goes and part of the fun is in trying to anticipate the branches the story can evolve into, you will have a lot of fun! If you saw Cloverfield back in 2008/9, but did not go beyond the film back them to solve to riddles and easter eggs that came out with the movie, you will have a lot of fun too, but will mostly experience the movie as a stand alone piece as well and have some difficulty connecting dots that link 10CL to the first movie. But don't get me wrong, you will have a lot of fun with it as well! This movie has a great pace, top acting, and it is really successful in making the viewer feel within the whole situation the characters find themselves in. Now, if you are a true cloverfield explorer, you will fall in love with this movie. The thing is, as with Cloverfield, what's going on in 10CL goes beyond what the movie shows. You really have to pay attention to Easter Eggs and the viral marketing campaign to figure out websites where you will find more information about the characters and the broader plot. What's in the movie is just a piece of this bigger plot. I will give a hint for those of you who want to follow this path: search for "Tagruato" and how it connects to cloverfield as a starting point. I give a 10 for this movie because, although everyone can enjoy, I understand that this movie targets, mostly, us, nerds who like playing detective with this mythology and, oh God, do they give us a lot to entertain ourselves! Typically sequels that haveWhilst 10 Cloverfield Lane is sold as a sequel, it is not a sequel in the traditional sense. J.J Abrams described it as being a blood relative to Cloverfield, with no direct links existing to its 2008 predecessor. Typically sequels that have nothing to do with the original do not have a good track record often just attempting to capitalise on the reputation of the original without having to put any effort in to creating a good film, such as Home Alone 3 and Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. But fortunately 10 Cloverfield Lane avoids this, being an effective thriller that stands apart from the original whilst still offering the same kind of horror and looming threat that made the original Cloverfield such a hit.

We open the film with a young woman called Michelle as she is driving away after seemingly breaking off her engagement. There's a few vague mentions on the radio of something going on, but before she can pay this any thought, a car crashes in to her and drives her off the road. She awakes in an empty room chained to the pipe. Eventually a man named Howard (John Goodman) enters the room to tell her that the outside world is no longer inhabitable and that he bought her in to his bunker to save her life.

And that's all that we know. It's this uncertainty and the unknown that casts a lurking shadow across the rest of the film as we, along with Michelle, try to put together exactly what's going on. There's another survivor in the shelter named Emmet (John Gallagher) who seems more trustworthy than Howard and is also convinced that somethings happened, but none of them are sure of just what it is. A few theories are thrown out there regarding Russians, aliens or apocalypse. Throughout the film we're left attempting to figure out exactly what's happened, but we do know that somethings happened and whatever's out there is keeping them trapped inside.

But as threatening as whatever's outside is, our characters never seem that much safer inside with John Goodman's Howard posing an ever looming threat. He's similar to other great villains like Kathy Bates in Misery, with his unhinged nature making him both unpredictable and dangerous, constantly switching in to fits of rage every time one of the other characters talks out of place. And just like whatever has happened outside, throughout the film we're constantly trying to piece together just who he is and whether he was really just trying to save Michelle or if he had some other reason for taking her out from that car wreck.

Whilst Michelle is held in the bunker against her will, she never for one moment becomes a passive victim. She is constantly using her survival instinct and being resourceful to gain an understanding of what's going on and figure out a way that she can get out of there.

Further distinguishing itself from its predecessor, 10 Cloverfield Lane does not use any shaky cam throughout the film. Instead Dan Trachtenberg favours a more suspenseful style of shooting that follows from Michelle's perspective whilst better emphasising the often claustrophobic setting of the film.

It's a thrilling premise that's executed in an unsettling way, trapping us within the same uncertainty and paranoia as our main character. Whilst we don't know exactly what we're supposed to fear, we know that whether it's the monster outside or the monster within, there is constant danger looming.
