    Halo Combat Evolved is really good. The floaty movement doesn't age perfectly, and getting tapped by a warthog is instant death, however, the campaign is quite incredible, from saving Captain Keyes, to finding the horror of the Flood, to destroying the Halo ring, this game was really good. The multiplayer at the time was only LAN party and splitscreen, that being said, it was still prettyHalo Combat Evolved is really good.     A game that honestly should have no introduction. This game changed FPS games on console with effects still seen today in it's campaign and multiplayer. What an insane launch title, Xbox would not be the same without the Chief.

    A masterpiece of FPS games, Halo brings a memorable soundtrack, a combat that brings difficulty to the player and at the same time provides incredible fun, the franchise may not have maintained the same level in later games, but this is a work cousin.

    The game that started it all. Halo created a fantastic franchise that held strong for many years for Xbox players. It revolutionized first person shooters. While it is not as good as some of its successors, it deserves to get credit for what it created. Definitely recommend playing through this game, along with the others on Halo: The Master Chief Collection

    This is the most overrated FPS of all time. It wasn't good then, and it isn't good now. It didn't significantly innovate either. The true startingpoint of console FPS games was Goldeneye, with Timesplitters bringing console FPS to near-modern standards. The added polish provided by Halo does not justify the hype.

    Game-changing FPS that launched a thousand Xbox sales. Great looking, varied, with cool environments, an intriguing story and genuinely intelligent enemies to battle. Halo: Anniversary for the 360 gives the game a HD facelift making that the better option, but it's still a stone cold classic.

    It's a classic for a reason. The gunplay holds up well today, allies and enemies are full of character, weapons and vehicles are diverse. Above all it's real strength is presentation, great music, art direction, and voice acting really set it apart.

The graphics are obviously outdated but I found the anniversary edition (part of the Halo Collection on Game Pass) to be a solid remaster for those looking for some nostalgia. I fondly remember playing this as a clueless 9/10 year old during all nighter sleepovers with friends. I’m only slightly surprised at how well it’s aged. Great story and characters, balanced and fair game play, phenomenal maps, and quite solid AI. This game revolutionized the FPS genre and certainly deserves its must play status.… Expand

    An all time classic. Halo combat evolved is a perfect game. Event playing it today fi think is too good.
    The soundtrack is filled with classics. shooting is fun. The deferent maps feel great although they are used repetitively.

    Not the best halo game, but still an enjoyable one. Its definitely a little repetitive and suffers from some pacing issues (the library section) but it's still an absolute classic with a fantastic multiplayer.

    Nothing beats the first Halo game. It's maybe the best console shooter ever released. For me, it was a reason to buy the original Xbox - and still is today. Pure nostalgia! Overall rating: 9,5.

    Man, for an Xbox launch title in 2001 this game was crazily booming! With an amazing multiplayer, a great story, graphics (while dated) are great and overall, a fantastic start to the Xbox and Master Chief would become one of the biggest games icons in the 2000s.

It's now quite dated, but at the time of its release, this was the best game on the console. Only some repetitive levels and the lack of proper multiplayer (no online or split-screen) kept it from being a true 10.     This is just classic Halo fun. The level design makes it so that every room is really interesting and the weapons are really satisfying to use.     Joya, el que comenzó todo, por poquito este juego se convierte en exclusivo de Apple, gracias Microsoft por rescatar a Bungie y traer al que empezó una de las mejores sagas en la historia de los shooters en primera persona, una de las joyas del xbox clásico que yo nunca lo tuve pero mi primo si y me da mucha nostalgia. 8.5 mínimo.

    Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - um dos melhores e mais divertidos FPS que já joguei. Apesar da história não ser muito cativante, todo o resto envelheceu como vinho. A jogabilidade é muito boa; a trilha sonora também; a dublagem (em inglês porque não tem em português) não é ruim mas também não é a melhor coisa do mundo; a variedade de inimigos e armas é bem grande para um jogo antigoHalo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - um dos melhores e mais divertidos FPS que já joguei. Apesar da história não ser muito cativante, todo o resto envelheceu como vinho. A jogabilidade é muito boa; a trilha sonora também; a dublagem (em inglês porque não tem em português) não é ruim mas também não é a melhor coisa do mundo; a variedade de inimigos e armas é bem grande para um jogo antigo desse e o protagonista apesar de na maior parte do tempo ser caladão ele tem o seu carisma. É um jogo que não tem pena do jogador, em algum momento ele fica bem difícil e algumas vezes joga inimigos infinitos até você saber o que tem que fazer. É um jogo que eu vou guardar para sempre no meu coração!!

One more thing I find nice is that the Legendary difficulty is somewhat actually tolerable unlike later Halo games. At least for me, Halo 3/Reach on Legendary is    Uhm...     The sound design is phenomenal; alongside the stellar soundtrack. Quite iconic I'd say!

    The storytelling is alright, but rest of the series does it a little better.

    Several *not* game breaking glitches exist[-0.3]. The most annoying one is: even when you cut the left arm of a certain enemy(which is used for their vicious whip attacks) while it's swinging, its ongoing melee would still land unless that enemy is stunned by your shot registered. THEN it'll be unable to whip again.

    I wasn't willing to comment on multiplayer but why not. In my honest opinion, all the weapons are a bit imbalanced when it comes to on-line experience[-0.4]. Worse still, the skill gap between new people and veteran players is more than massive at this point anyways. Maybe I should 've been born earlier than myself(10/16/2001).

    Overall, just great old game with few flaws. Something very fundamental if you're gonna discuss about FPS or video game history in general.    … Expand

However, this is the version worth playing, don't bother with MCC or Anniversary edition. If you got a functioning O.G. Xbox, find yourself a second-hand copy of it, and borrow your grandfather's old CRTA pinnacle not only for FPS games, but for video games in general. For 2001, it still holds as a game worth playing in 2022, and split-screen campaign and multiplayer is always amusing. However, this is the version worth playing, don't bother with MCC or Anniversary edition. If you got a functioning O.G. Irresponsible parenting aside, I love this game with all my heart, it undoubtedly has shaped who I am and offers a lot of fond memories I doubt I'll ever forget. The original trilogy of the Halo games, along with its spin-offs are as close to the perfectOne of the first games I ever played, I'm not kidding when I said I used to play this game with my father when I was around 3 years old.     Halo CE kind of kicked off the start of an era, begging and end of games really.
    The world, the guns, the gameplay, the multiplayer, everything kind of started with this insane game.

    Its sad to see what the franchise became today, but this was a great game.

    I played it with a friends in local co-op. We sent a couple of night on it and it was fun, not too much challenging and refreshing. A good one.

    A generation defining game and a masterpiece it did everything right, great music, great characters, great story with a great twist, great weapons that felt like they had power behind them, great enemies to fight against, amazing level design and excellent reuse of levels to make them feel different, perfect length and amount of levels for a fps.     The quintessential FPS on the OG Xbox. Even by today standards, it's very well put together.

    The fact that Halo is still used as an eponym for a whole genre says it all...

    The game that started the massive franchise it is today. Halo was such a great game, that I still play it today! My brother and I used to play the campaign and we would often invite friends over with Halo to have LAN parties. I tell ya those were some great times. The gameplay, storyline and multiplayer was so good.

    There's reviews from all the way back to 2002, and my review is from a "2022 POV". Halo has a good story actually, the external parts are well made and the graphics are among the best of its time, for sure.

    i mean, this game is one of the few that i would call an "epic masterpiece" because it started off the halo series and also was probably the best halo to come out because it is simple unlike halo 5 and has an enjoyable story unlike halo 5 and every weapon in the sandbox has a specific use unlike halo 5.

Developed by bunngie and published by Xbox game studios this game started one of the best (if not the best) first person shooter franchises. Although benefiting from a great story, amazing characters and top tier gameplay the level design has some down parts like repeating level design or bad enemy placement but all that can be put aside by all the great levels like the silent cartographer and the ironicly named Halo. To sum it up this game is a great start to the sixth generation, a blast to play and a great story it suffers from repetitive level design and less than stellar enemy placement and is one of the most beloved Xbox games of all time and will continue to be.… Expand

    The game that got me into shooters. For the time the enemies and environments were fantastic. The music used in this game is so good it is still used in the recent iterations of the game.

    I didn't play this game at the time. I played it just a few months ago at MCC and although it's entertaining and I understand its importance, the game has a lot of repetitive moments and the ending where you escape from the Halo facing Guilty Spark is a pain.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a really good game for its time, but the weakest of the Bungie Halo games. Halo CE is basically like the original Star Wars film: they invented most of the ideas that were later refined, but technically not as impressive as later works. I think a lot of fans view this game with nostalgia, I personally don't because I grew up in the 360 generation, so I have more nostalgia for Halo 3 and Reach. I am mostly critiquing this game from the perspective of someone who played through for the first time in 2021. The game just isn't that fun compared to the sequels. The first few levels are really good (Silent Cartographer is one of the GOAT Halo levels), but when the flood arrive the game become kind of meh. 343 Guilty Spark (the level) works well as a plot device but isn't actually very enjoyable to play through. The Library is an absolute chore to complete. Two Betrayals is a good level because it has has lots of vehicles and space to use them. Keyes isn't that great and to be honest when playing The Maw I just wanted it to end. IMO Halo CE suffers because it's sandbox isn't that great and you only get to experience it on levels like Assault on the Control Room and Two Betrayals. It also suffers due to a relatively boring and slow plot, and the sense of isolation in the second half of the game (to be fair, this might be considered a good thing by some people, but not my cup of tea personally). All of the awesome characters like Johnson, Foehammer, and Keyes die or go missing, and you're just left with Cortana and occasionally Guilty Spark. Compare this with Halo 2 where you have a full cast and a much richer story, more developed characters and factions, greater sandbox, and less repetition between levels.

    Yeah so to sum it up, Halo CE is a game that deserved a 10/10 in 2001, but hasn't aged terribly well. It deserves credit for starting off such a great series and it has its moments, so my score is 8/10, although I'm tempted to give it a 6.5 based solely on its merits as a standalone game to play in the year 2021.    … Expand

    Pure greatness. This game was the birth of many modern shooters. The gameplay holds up even to this day and the Campian is very memorable. Multiplayer is solid if a little unbalanced. The first halo is still one of the best.

This helps the player to get the hands-on the first kills, while also not being too punishing and difficult. After landing in the Halo we can appreciate the incredible graphics and setting. The enemies of Halo also look spectacular, from the goofy Grunts to the threatening Sangheili's, the threats in Halo are various and equipped with various weapons, grenades, and even power weapons, like a one-shot sword.
    Perhaps one of the most incredible things about the enemies in Halo it's the AI. At heroic or legendary difficulties, the enemies will not only deal more damage and have more hp, but they will also coordinate to flank while you are taking cover, or rush you when you are low on shields. The AI of enemies in Halo is so good, that 20 years later, the enemy's movements of Halo Infinite feel exactly the same. Bungie developer also did a great job with the music, in fact since the start of the game we are welcomed by an almost religious choir in the menu, and for the rest of the game, we have intense music in fights, alternated with more calm and gentle one during lore related dialogues.
    My only complaint with the game it's the health bar which only refills after finding health packs (which are very rare) or at the end of the level, leaving the player to only count on the shields for most of the game. Also, the weapons feel unbalanced: the handgun feels way too powerful compared to the assault rifle which becomes useless in the late game.
    Halo Combat Evolved it's intense, precise and fun! The first XBOX became a must-buy for this game, and not the other way around like it usually is!

Jogo revolucionário no gênero fps, da para ver que antes de 2001 não havia nada igual, sem contar que é muito divertido, no meu ponto de vista, superior ao seu antecessor na ordem cronológica, você ter que usar certa arma para counterar tal inimigo é incrível, a Inteligência Artificial é melhor que muitos jogos de hoje em dia. Os conflitos do jogo são interessante, e te faz ter vontade de jogar mais, meu problema com o jogo é o fato de dirigir ser extremamente desgostante e horrível de controlar, e ter aquelas missões insuportáveis de ficar matando uma onda de mini-aliens por uns 10 minutos seguidos sem parar, parece que foi jogado como um enchimento sem motivo. But when I rate games I consider playing it now more important then how it was when released. And some things have definitely aged in combat evolved. For one the visuals and environments can be blocky and dull to look at some times and some areas are just plain ugly or are very dark. I find the old visuals to be charming flawed but charming but for many today this game can be quiet ugly in general although I will hold up that some areas and levels are quite pretty in their own sense. Of course you can play with the anniversary visuals in that port or in the MCC collection. But those visuals are fairly plain to me and completely bungle the tone and designs of areas and enemy's. I wouldn't recommend the anniversary visuals but I know that for many modern gamers the original look can be very unappealing so that can be a problem for some. One other common complaint and one I share is the level design. Now this is mostly for the last 4 levels the first level is fine the second and fourth levels I think are wonderful and nice to look at the third level is okay and the fifth level has a good tone and atmosphere to it. However the Library or seventh level is probably one of the worst levels in the entire series, It just not fun to play especially on harder difficulties. And the last 3 levels are just levels previously played but different in some ways and because of that it just feels a bit boring. Although the last stretch of the last level is truly a classic as you have to drive through the ship before it explodes. The ships architecture might make no sense if you stop and look around a bit during this segment but it doesn't matter because of how fun it is and how well it caps the game off. That mostly covers any negatives I have other then that it's mostly positives. Gunplay is super solid and really solidified many conventions we have with modern console shooters. While there's not really a large verity of guns in the game all of them are fun to use and have their place within it. The pistol is famous for how overpowered and fun it is. The shotgun might be my favorite in he series just for its long look and how much punch it has . I could go on but my point is that there all good and have wonderful sound affects to go along with them. But what really makes the gameplay so much fun is the AI. Even compared to some modern titles the AI is remarkably intelligent. Enemy's will find cover, try to flank you, charge you if they now your near death and will retreat if a superior is killed. Of course this mostly applies to the covenant as the flood act more like AI in shooters at the time in that they will just charge you and mindlessly shoot. Makes sense considering what they are but in practice not as fun to fight which adds to the later flood levels not being as much fun to play. Anyways what else can I say the music is fantastic and really just iconic and down right beautiful at times. The vehicles are fun to use but also are really wonky in how they feel and the fact they like to drift. Except the tank the tank isn't really fun to use in this game but you never have to use it so there's that I guess. The plot today is a bit simple but there are layers to it and a sense of mystery as well. Who built the rings what are there purpose how and what are the covenant? When it comes to characters there's only like six in the whole game and some are forgettable or don't get to do enough but Master Chief Cortana and Guilty Spark are defiantly memorable characters. Although Chief is a bit of an idiot in this one and Cortana is rocking a bowl cut but other then that I cant really complain. Overall Halo Combat Evolved is a classic it might be a bit rough around the edges but the core gameplay is a blast to play and certainly worth playing today among any fans of shooters.… Expand

    It's a classic. And the hit game from everyone's childhood. Despite it's old graphics and clunky physics Halo Combat Evolved remains as the best game in the series, thanks to it's fantastic story and twist, perfect combat and difficulty, and it's timeless multiplayer.
