Apart from a few minor glitches, mostly concerning how Storage works, it's a well-functioning game in its genre. It may be too simple for some, but if you are looking for a cosy and relaxing game to sit and warm yourself with on dark evenings, perhaps together with your partner, then Winter Burrow is a pretty good bet.

If you ever wondered how fairy tale characters survive their adventures, Winter Burrow will have your answer.

At €19.50 for about 8 hours of gameplay, Winter Burrow is a more than reasonable investment, especially if you're looking for intimate stories about loss, loneliness, and the need to find yourself. A short but intense adventure, where every gesture carries narrative weight and where rebuilding a lair also means rebuilding yourself.

Taken together, Winter Burrow succeeds as a survival game that is polished, accessible, and quietly affecting. It may not satisfy players looking for fast paced action, but for those drawn to slower, reflective experiences it offers a distinctive blend of challenge and comfort. By merging its cozy aesthetic with meaningful gameplay, it delivers a survival tale that resonates beyond its mechanics. On Xbox Series X, it stands out as a thoughtful and memorable addition to the genre.

For me, once the novelty of the cuteness wore off, I found the mechanics to be a bit boring, and in parts very frustrating (mostly due to the lack of a map when trying to find items I needed). For veteran players, the only stand-out feature here is the way the game looks and the ‘cosy’ style of play. Does this make Winter Burrow stand out in its genre? I’m not sure that it does, and honestly I’m not sure it has endeared me to this type of game at all.

If you’re looking for a cute animal-themed game in which to decorate, you could do worse, but expect a harsh survival experience.

Winter Burrow is beautiful and wonderfully written adventure brought down by obtuse and frustrating design choices.
