A wholesale copycat of Hyperlight Drifter with some Dark Souls thrown in. Unsouled has the same problem as Doom Eternal; an overly complicated combat system.

The intro for the game is a lore dump of complicated controls and game mechanics. There's the usual slash, dodge, and block, the Dark Souls parry, as well as a first strike mechanic if you attack right before the enemy. There is a standard charged attack, as well as a chi charge attack, and some sort of soul charged attack? Each of these correspond to holding down different buttons, and can be chained with other buttons to produce different effects. There are many different standard button combos as well similar to Bayonetta. There's also avatars that you can activate that give you special powers. There's also some ghost orb dodging system that you can activate when you get hit that I never managed to successfully use. I'm sure there are other mechanics I'm forgetting. They dump this on you over a long tutorial. It's ponderous.

There's also some questionable level design with many things not being visible to the player unless you stumble upon them or are very thorough. Levels are littered with environmental traps and obstacles such as ice blocks and floor spikes that are terribly implemented. Real amateur hour stuff.

The game is fairly short, and I finished it with the bad ending in about five hours, and did not feel compelled to play through it again for the better endings to this borderline incoherent story. I'm personally offended that they took so much from Hyperlight Drifter, and left behind the best part, which is no dialog.

The endgame credits are un-skippable. Egregious.

I was shocked by how incredible this game feels to play. Paired with a solid story, great music, and surprising depth it’s an easy recommendation on Game Pass or for its $20 price tag at launch. Whether you’re looking for a balls to the wall thrill ride or something that feels great and is chill to play you can customize the difficulty how you see fit.
