While mechanically simple, Nocturnal is very well made and feels quite polished. While able to be completed in a single sitting, it short length felt like the appropriate amount of time, as anything more would have started to wear out its welcome. A great indie title that deserves some attention, Nocturnal is challenging in the darkest times, but makes for a satisfying experience when you fight against it with flames.

Nocturnal is a short, yet enjoyable experience. The platforming and visuals are the best aspects of the game. While I wish there was an expansion to some of the mechanics, the fact that it doesn’t stretch out the playtime unnecessarily somewhat offsets that desire.

Nocturnal is not a standout title but it is far from bad. A shorter experience, this linear platformer will end up testing your patience and reflexes in challenging but not punishing traversal and combat. Although basic in fighting and its skill selections, Nocturnal is a fine game that’s worth the attention of 2D platforming enthusiasts.

Nocturnal is a compact proposal, to the point and with interesting mechanics in terms of combat and puzzles. It is far from the great exponents of the genre, but it bets on some original elements that can undoubtedly attract an audience that does not want to complicate itself with the rigid, demanding and absorbing structure of a pure and simple Metroidvania.

Nocturnal is a short but intense, stylish metroidvania action platformer that delivers fun mechanics, visceral combat and intense platforming sections based on timing and reflexes, but at the same time it's got many trial & error moments, sometimes unresponsive controls and just a few different boss fights. Oh, and it's very short: is that a problem for you?

Throughout this review, we have been quick to point out some of Nocturnal's shortcomings. But make no mistake: even though the game is not perfect, it immediately stands out as one of the gems of the independent scene. An exceptional title as good in form as it is in content. It is a real favourite that you absolutely should not miss.
