Poor performance on XBox Series S.

I preordered Kart Racers 3 for XBox Series S and got a refund after trying it. The performance is horrible. The frame rate is constantly taking a dive to something like 20-25fps, especially when there is water on screen. I couldn't wait for the race to be over to give my eyes a break from the choppiness.

Fortnite, on the other hand, rarely dips from a buttery-smooth 120fps on my TV.

When selecting a character to start a race (in local two player mode), the menu was sluggish and unresponsive. I had to press the A button three times just to select my character. Then there's about 6 other pages to go through to select your kart and other options, but for each option we had to press the A button at least 2-3 times in order to make a selection.

There's currently no option to change the controller button layout. Holding down the shoulder button to accelerate was causing my daughter's finger to ache after one race (she frequently finishes top 5 in Fortnite, so she's not a stranger to gaming).

In Mario Kart 8, you hold the A button to accelerate, which is much easier for smaller hands. The Switch controller is also smaller in general. Developers, please think about the size/ability of kids' hands when asking someone to hold down a shoulder/trigger button constantly... especially when making a game aimed a kids.
There is an auto-accelerate option in Kart Racers 3 (like in MK8), but then you lose an element of driving control.

As for the gameplay itself, there is a tutorial at the very beginning but there are all these different gameplay mechanics that are confusing at first and didn't seem to be introduced very well.

When starting an actual game, it asks you to select an "Engineer" and "Mechanic" and other characters. At first I couldn't figure out why it wanted me to select additional characters over and over. This element of creating a 'team' could've been explained a lot better.

The character dialogue during a race seemed rather tacked on, with lines being spoken/shouted while their mouths are closed, or the character doesn't make any movements to help match the dialog. Occasionally the voices were poorly balanced, so I couldn't hear what they were saying over the music (like Garfield).

Neither of us wanted to continue playing after the first race. If the game actually ran well, then I would've spent more time figuring out the actual gameplay. After all, there are very few decent Mario Kart alternatives. Maybe I'll check out Kart Racers 3 again in 6-12 months, if they make some improvements on Series S.

The game presents many problems on Xbox Series S.Decrease in frame rate, 20fps, crashes, texture problem, closing alone, mandatory character in online mode. It's hard to see it as a next-gen game because it's worse than its predecessor in gameplay. Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2 runs at an incredible 60fps so what's the reason for poor performance? And the problem isn't the Xbox, since we have great games running at 2K/60fps. I very much hope that they can add 60fps or normalize the swings that thus hinder the fun, I want to keep playing and investing in this game... Expand

Despite the clear inspiration it has taken from Mario Kart and other kart-racing games, Nickelodeon: Slime Speedway is an energetic burst of kart-racing action you will find suitably engrossing. It’s not pushing any boundaries, nor does it always feel compelling to drive – but it will likely steal your evenings with the little ones, and there’s a cast of characters here that will delight those little ones who grew up in the 90s. All told this is a solid effort that will go down well like Garfield’s lasagne – just don’t expect it to get Squidward’s approval.

It is a game recommended perhaps for the smallest of the household, who can entertain themselves with the characters, scenarios and movements that are generated within the races, but not for those who are looking for something more from the experience.

Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway isn’t a bad kart racing game, but technical issues and some issues with track design make it hard to recommend to all but the biggest Nickelodeon fans.
