MindsEye has gone through a rotten time. The early reviews were fair, but the developer has worked incredibly hard to make their game work. It is now fun, challenging, and the plot is great to witness. Although some will turn up their noses, I think you should give it a go.

MindsEye is no longer the broken mess it was when it launched in June of 2025. The developers have clearly worked hard to iron out the bugs and elevate the game to a higher standard. I enjoyed the campaign and much of the core gameplay, even if it felt more like a game from yesteryear rather than a cutting-edge release of today.

MindsEye's merits are a few needles in a disastrous haystack. The first few minutes of Jacob's journey even manage to arouse curiosity, at least a little, but it is enough to start comparing the adventure's gameplay to discover its clear limits. Limitations that unfortunately do not spare the graphics sector and performance solidity in any way, at least on consoles. The guys at Build a Rocket Boy say they are working to improve the situation but this does not change the truth: we are faced with a production that would have deserved a much better development cycle and which, at the moment, is the worst we have worked on in 2025.

MindsEye isn’t a “so bad it’s good” situation. It’s just bad in a mundane, uninteresting way. It’s a half-baked idea built out with shallow writing, vapid gameplay, and bland everything else. Even the bugs aren’t funny enough to be memorable. The most entertaining part of all this is the vague allusion to sabotage the leadership at Build a Rocket Boy seems to be leaning on. Will we eventually learn exactly who sabotaged what part of this pile of decaying, raw beef of a video game to the extent of holding it back from greatness? Or were we simply seeing desperate executives throwing darts at the Wheel of Avoiding Accountability? Who can say? By the time an answer may emerge we’ll probably all forget MindsEye existed. We don’t really have bargain bins anymore, after all.

For those hoping several patches could make MindsEye into a possibly well-executed game, there’s no salvaging the mess left behind in Redrock.

MindsEye is the worst kind of failure, a soporific one.

MindsEye had potential: a futuristic universe, an intriguing storyline and powerful themes about AI and its technological challenges, but the result is disappointing. The gameplay is sorely lacking in fluidity and originality, the enemy AI suffers from a glaring lack of responsiveness and consistency, and the linear and repetitive missions quickly become tedious. Even Redrock City, which showed promise, appears desperately empty with no side activities and, above all, no soul. And the disappointment doesn't end there. Visually, the graphics fall short of current standards with persistent technical issues such as flickering, slowdowns, popping and frame rate drops despite patches. MindsEye joins the depressing and growing list of games that were released prematurely and not really finished. The studio is trying to reassure players by releasing a series of updates to improve the overall experience. A multiplayer mode and a construction system have also been announced to enrich the content. But will all this be enough to give MindsEye a second wind similar to Cyberpunk 2077's comeback?
