Echo Generation 2 is a major improvement over the first game. They’ve sanded away most of its gameplay rough edges, with only a final chapter that requires too much repetition as a standout issue. It is a gorgeous title, with fun combat and great music that is well worth a playthrough, especially if you have Game Pass.

Despite some missteps, Echo Generation 2 is a bold, imaginative follow up that fans of the original - and fans of quirky sci fi RPGs in general - will find plenty they enjoy. Just be prepared: the final duel might test your patience more than your deck building skills.

Overall Echo Generation 2 is a very interesting and well made follow-up. The gameplay offers a nice blend of RPG and deckbuilder that doesn’t leave story or style behind for the pure mechanics. The often switching characters you are in control of are both a strength and a weakness though. On one hand it offers many different gameplay styles and mechanics in a very compact package. On the other hand, it makes the game seem less focused overall. The almost complete lack of tutorials or hints also make this a very hard sell for people who mostly wanna play for the story or the vibes because despite its looks the game offers a lot of customisation and depth.

Although Echo Generation 2 is a thoroughly enjoyable deckbuilding RPG in its own right, it drifts a little too far from what made the first game so special.

Echo Generation 2 is an update of the first game: capable of giving a more mature identity, thanks to a sci-fi setting with references to the ’80s and ’90s and a rather interesting storyline. The game is supported by a new combat system, which combines the classic turn-based system with deckbuilding. Cococucumber managed to create a more dynamic and unpredictable gameplay. All of this is seasoned with a high-level artistic component, thanks to the wise use of voxel art.

I absolutely loved Echo Generation 2 and it will undoubtedly be on my Game of the Year list for 2026. Its narratives mix of charm, horror, comedy and heart is something delighted and kept me guessing as I played it. And with the game launching on XBOX Game Pass, I really hope a lot of players take the opportunity to experience what I am calling one of the year’s best RPGs.
