I felt the pacing of Dredge was done really well. At the start of the game, the ocean feels vast and unforgiving. Each new island feels like it’s on the other side of the planet but as you progress you unlock travel options that make those journeys much shorter. You go from only being able to carry a few small fish to being able to fish the size of sharks. As you near the end game, fishingI felt the pacing of Dredge was done really well. You go from only being able to carry a few small fish to being able to fish the size of sharks. As you near the end game, fishing and money mostly become irrelevant unless certain fish are needed to progress.

My only criticism was a quality of life one. About halfway through Dredge, you’re able to buy an item that allows you to create shortcuts. This should be incredibly handy but the issue I had was that this item could only be bought one at a time. Only after enough time had passed could you purchase another. While not a huge deal, it made traversal and backtracking in several spots a bit more tedious than it needed to be. I am unsure why this item had a restriction put on it as it was very cheap compared to other items and only had one use meaning it was very difficult to run out or waste.

Outside of this issue I had a great time with Dredge and did not expect a spooky fishing game to be both addicting and fun while also having a great narrative.

DREDGE is an experience that shimmers amidst the swell of the unknown with a mesmerising light that induces both attraction and chills.

With impeccable Lovecraftian vibes and a sinister story underlying the simple fishing game I thought it was, DREDGE was a masterclass on worldbuilding, suspense and fear - without gore and violence. DREDGE never really strays from what makes it great. It’s a tight indie title that knows what it is and executes it to perfection. I’ve never played anything like it before and I am beyond thankful that I was able to review this gem. DREDGE It’s definitely one of the best games I’ve played this year, maybe even the best. I’d even hazard to say it’s quite the catch.

It's impossible not to get caught in Dredge's clutches: supernatural horror, dry and fascinating narrative and an intoxicating gameplay loop make Black Salt Games' first effort an indie to remember.
