Rogue-lite platformers don’t get enough love in my opinion and at times I wish it wasn’t so much of a niche genre because when a game gets the important mechanics right that said game can provide you with a lot of enjoyable moments. Whilst Xenon Valkyrie+ gets a few things wrong it ultimately gets more things right and I must admit that I enjoyed my time with the game quite a bit. TheRogue-lite platformers don’t get enough love in my opinion and at times I wish it wasn’t so much of a niche genre because when a game gets the important mechanics right that said game can provide you with a lot of enjoyable moments. Whilst Xenon Valkyrie+ gets a few things wrong it ultimately gets more things right and I must admit that I enjoyed my time with the game quite a bit. The gameplay has been done really well and without a doubt it has a very addictive side to it and that’s mainly down to them getting the right balance between being challenging and rewarding. Whilst I enjoyed most of the gameplay I did however find the boss battles to be a little tedious and on the whole they just felt generic, which is a shame. The controls which are very important in a game like this have been done really well and they never gave me any problems, which is great considering the platforming elements can provide you with some awkward moments at times. Don’t get me wrong the platforming isn’t bad by no means it just can be a little frustrating at times. Something that really impressed me about this game was the level design. Each level has had a lot of thought and effort put into it and the amount of variety that’s present in each level means it isn’t a chore to carry on when you die. Unfortunately the same amount of variety isn’t present when it comes to the characters. Each character feels and plays the same and I think that they should have given each character more of its own style to keep things a little fresher, because that in my opinion would make you want to complete the game with each character more. The presentation side of the game is something that I enjoyed quite a bit. Visually the game has a real retro vibe going for it and when you combine that with the decent sound design it makes you enjoy the game even more. At the end of the day Xenon Valkyrie+ is one of them rare games that can be enjoyed playing for long periods and short periods. It may be far from being perfect but the fun factor at times can be off the charts and when all the mechanics combine together perfectly things flow brilliantly. If you’re a fan of this specific genre then you can do much worse than Xenon Valkyrie+ and when it’s all said and done it does enough to get a thumbs up from me. Expand

Great in short bursts, Xenon Valkyrie+ scratches an itch but is lacking long term appeal due to its randomized difficulty.

Xenon Valkyrie+ is an excellent game with an 8-bit artistic look that works very well. It has a simple gameplay but tremendously addictive. An essential title not without flaws that will delight the increasingly numerous roguelike players.

There's nothing here that fans of the genre haven't seen before. If the inexplicable attack patterns and unfair deaths don't drive people away, they will soon discover that there's nothing really compelling or clever about the game. In short, it's not worth the grey hairs.
