WTF? They turned a FPS game into some RPG hybrid abomination with predatory micro transactions...???!!!! What the HELL were they thinking? There are also a lot of glitches and bugs... avoid this trash game like the plague.

Sophia, and Jessie Blazkowicz, grew up being trained to hunt and fight by their Father, and Mother Anya. But there's a problem, B.J. has gone missing, and no one will do anything about it! Joined by their friend and gadgeteer Abby, daughter of Grace Walker, the head of the F.B.I., when they steal Grace's Helicopter and head to France, to find B.J. and bring him home. Wolfenstein: YB features a Co-Op campaign through the Nazi infested streets of Paris where you play as one of the twin sisters. If you want to play Solo that's fine, an AI will control the other sister. Wearing the cyber suits made by Abby you will harness a host of abilities to assist you in mission. From double jumping to turning nearly invisible you can go in Guns blazing, or take a stealthy approach, the choice is yours! Your arsenal will also grow in size and power, and are all customizable with three different sets of upgrades to a large majority of the weapons parts, everything from your standard pistol, to the Uberhammer, a weapon of massive power. Get the Deluxe Edition and invite friends that don't even own the game to join you Co-Op, though they won't get achievements unless the purchase the game themselves. Wolfenstein's legacy carries on, and fans of the series shouldn't pass this title up! Never played Wolfenstein? There has never been a better time to start! Expand

This is NOT New Order, Old Blood, or New Colossus. It feels like an entirely different game with Wolfenstein skin. The weapons arent impact-ful, dont feel heavy when they fire. Its like Im shooting a rock or wall when I hit enemies. When the gun play was one of the best parts of the other games. The combat just feels hollow. Like I might as well knife every enemy.

The story, within the first 15 minutes felt disjointed and scattered and kinda cookie cutter. I get into game and I feel like Im racing to get currency to unlock things. It didnt feel like I was trying to find out what was happening to the characters...at all. I've been waiting for this game for nearly a year now, I suppose my expectations were too high. This is not Wolfenstein. As other reviews stated, its a looter shooter. A big, shallow ocean...the most hours of game play but everything else is 1 inch deep.

I hate to say this but what a terrible game. I've been buying Wolfenstein games for 25+ years and this is the first I've completely regretted purchasing (though I also didn't love New Colossus). I've been buying Wolfenstein games for 25+ years and this is the first I've completely regretted purchasing (though I also didn't love New Colossus). One thing I'll say upfront is that I didn't mind the sisters that much. I know a lot of people hate their characterizations and dialog. I really don't care about that, as I was simply happy to see that this game included more gameplay than the cut-scene-fest that was New Colossus. I also never really ran into any situations where I felt a need to even look at the available micro-transactions, though it's very clear that the game limits ammo, checkpoints, etc. in such a way that purchasing gold bars could be beneficial for players who get in a bind (which is a huge negative despite me not personally running into it).

EDIT (08/01/2019): Micro-transactions associated with in-game boosters (ammo, armor, etc.) seem to have been removed at some point, which I did not realize. I'm fairly certain they were present at launch and patched out shortly after.

For me, rather, the big negatives for this game include the insanely repetitive mission design (which attempts to gloss over the smallness of the hub levels), the spongy enemies, and far and away my biggest complaint - the wildly incompetent AI that the non-played sister displays if you don't have a real co-op partner. Combined with lack of checkpoints, I more than once lost 20+ minutes of gameplay because the AI sister would simply stand in the middle (or corner) of a boss arena and take maximum punishment. Most of the bosses I could handle easily enough myself but a couple of times on initially trying a boss (and not knowing the pattern the boss would follow) I did bite the dust. Very infuriating to have to completely restart a level. Would be less so if the game wasn't so repetitive, I suppose.

EDIT (08/01/2019): I wanted to clarify that I have no problem with a game not having checkpoints. I recognize the argument that I simply need to get good at the game. What I DO have a problem with is when I die (with no checkpoints) primarily because the AI implemented by the development team is not properly functional.

Additionally to all that, I disliked that when hosting a public match players who were nowhere near the same level as me could jump into the game. The loading screen tips like to say that your co-op partners level / combat experience is specific to them but I have no idea how that's supposed to work. It didn't seem to carry over into level-specific missions, as I more than once had to kick a Level 1 player out of a 20+ level mission because they had no idea what was going on and/or just got wiped immediately. Additionally, the Buddy Pass (on XBOX) is a total joke. In order to invite someone, you have to invite them in-game and then they have to download the free trial version of the game. There is no mention of 'buddy pass' anywhere, which is very confusing when you are a) trying to verify you are using a buddy pass and b) explain that the free trial IS the buddy pass version (when explaining it to your buddy who is also confused about what's going on).

In all, this game is a total cluster. Avoid this trash and hope (like I am) that Wolfenstein gets handed off to a new developer for future games, assuming this abortion didn't just completely tank the franchise as a whole.

Let’s just phone this one in.” “Yeah man, I agree, let’s phone it in.” “So what we gotta do is cut out most of the plot, main characters, and interesting story.” “Let’s just make a bare bones shooter and slap the Wolfenstein logo on it so it appears it’s a real game when it’s not.”

“We also can get Arkane Studios involved so we can do less work and have a disjointed creative vision.” “Also let’s just fast forward two decades from the last game and throw Blazco’s kids in there because that’ll be a nice cover for all that story stuff not being in there.” “And we’ll tease the fans, we’ll put a throw away one liner in there about how Blazco killed Hitler in the 60’s, and make the player scream in anger about why they couldn’t play that game instead of this hot garbage.” “What about a coop shooter? Even though it makes no sense for the franchise, it’ll be a nice gimmick and also a nice cover for our lack of work. It’s not that we didn’t put in the effort, we’ll just tell them we’re taking the franchise in a new and interesting direction.”

“That’ll work, because it’ll also allow us to shoehorn in all the microtransaction and online poison that our Bethesda Masters now demand of us.” “Let’s make a false open world game, where the player has to continually recross the same territory as they incessantly grind to level up so they can face the bosses. This will be less work for us, and also infuriate the gamer as they continually have to mill Nazis who respawn over the exact same ground again and again and again. It’ll accomplish what nobody ever thought possible: make butchering Nazis boring.”

“And we’ll debase the combat to the point where it’s no longer a precise, deadly encounter where every kill, every mission feels like a true accomplishment. Instead, we’ll make it so it’s more of a 1990’s arcade style shooter where dying means nothing because your sister can just regenerate you, and the Nazis are bullet sponges who take shots straight to the face and don’t die, and your best bet is just to run right up to the enemy (including the last stage of the end boss) and you blast away with a shotgun from three feet away like it’s a D grade multiplayer shooter.”

“But wait, how can we write proper dialogue for a pair of Texan white teenage girls? We’re a bunch of middle aged European white dudes?” “Don’t worry, remember we’re phoning this in, and we can just lie and say it’s not that we wrote immature, annoying protagonists, it’s just that we’re taking the franchise in a new risky direction.”

“But wait guys, this all sounds like a really bad idea, it shows such contempt for our fans, who worship the first three games.” “Don’t worry about it bro. Remember, we’re still getting paid, and we’re phoning it in. And remember, all the major successful video game companies of our era show nothing but disgust for their fans. Just look at the contempt flowing from Rockstar, Bethesda, and EA. They all treat their fans like filth, and still make a bunch of money. We can do that too!”

Plus, the game has glitched achievements, and it appears a couple of the tutorials can be permanently missed because you can't get back to the area. The enemies are also bullet sponges even on normal, and there's entirely too many worthless collectibles, too much repeating the same areas, etc. It's a lousy entry overall.

The only explanation is that both sisters are brain damaged from when their mom was six months pregnant fighting on the front lines.

The saving grace is the gameplay itself is still fun and satisfying, albeit not supported well by the other portions of the game as the last three. It would've been better served as an MP-only $20 appetizer while waiting for the next "real" iteration of the series.

This is a slightly different take on Wolfenstein than New order and New Colossus, it is a mix of Wolfensteins shooting with Metroid/Vania mechanics. The graphics are exceptional no matter the platform it's played on and the art team really nailed the 80's futuristic aesthetic. I'm a child of the 80's and everything from the color palette to the structure of things in the gameworld really nails that late 70's early 80's vibe (with a future Nazi spin of course).

The structure of areas is really well thought out and leaves you wondering how you unlock doors and tunnel systems you haven't accessed yet. I thoroughly enjoyed building out my arsenal of weapons and overpowering them, especially the heavy shotgun the Kugelhammer as it is hilarious to blast Nazis into completely random puddles. If you're collecting things and doing some reasonable leveling of your weapons it's around a 30hr game though you could run through it in around 15 or so. There is very limited cosmetic microtransactions (maybe 20 total in the form of gun and armor skins). The upgrade currency "silver coins" are a little too grindy to get enough to purchase all the upgrades, a perfect balance would probably be 2.5 to 3x as many silver coins as that would allow all upgrades in a completionist playthrough.

Grindiness is my only gripe as it's a beautiful, well realized gameworld with very solid mature gameplay.

It's fantastic!!! skipped the bethesda account stuff, no micro transactions or join game stuff (again, i really don;t like that) Just enjoy this mega blast fest because that is what this game is all about. Do missions from your home-base and blow all enemies to bits and pieces. Great guns (love the Dieselkraftwerk!!) And because i also speak German it's fun to hear all the chatter / announcements etc. (even this has been done very well in the game.) With this I'm off as i still have some side missions to do, I'll bet i'll start this game up quite regularly just to blast some Nazi scum back to hell (with style!). Give it a try! Expand

I liked the game, it entertained me a lot and has left me wanting more. The new mechanics of 2 characters has to be improved in AI mode and it is true that many times it gets in the middle.

I like the scenarios very much, that being able to reach the same point in several ways and multiple paths seems to me a success, as well as the use of the Vertical scenario.
Things to improve, the companion's AI can be smarter, be more supportive and not get in the way of being insane. But hey it's a simple AI.
And personally I do not understand the raging attack on the game, which I admit is not like the previous ones, but it seems that people are angry with Bethesda for other games than for this one in particular.
This is my humble opinion and as I see it.

So far a great co-op game. Superb maps and pretty good graphics. Enjoying the looting and rpg element. I must admit that the New Colossus was my least favourite and I now like that one less than this game. My son bought the game on sale and said it was worth giving a try. With al the scepticism in the world and almost walking away twice I persisted and chose my son's opinion over numerous very convincing negative reviews which seemed to mirror what my preconceived notions were. I ended up agreeing with my son. This is a fun Wolfenstein game and although not what we wanted it is a great game. I even ended up loving the goofy nerdy girls who we play. They won my heart and I didn't even mind the elevator load screens. I really love this game and am so sorry I wasn't willing to give it a chance and glad I was encouraged to give it a try. I think you should too. You might change your mind as I did but at the very least there is fun to be had. Expand

This game has unskipable cutscenes. So it gets AUTOMATIC ZERO from me. I do not play video games to watch movies. I watch movies to watch movies. Video games that force me to watch a movie get an automatic zero and often a one way trip to the trash.

Utter garbage, one of the most moronically boring games I've ever had the misfortune of wasting my time playing. Solo or coop makes no difference in terms of your experience, you will regret it and never look at a Wolfenstein game the same again. Thanks for ruining the franchise, you utter bungling idiots.

Grinding in Wolfenstein? Seriously, Bethesda? It is an average game that is fun time-to-time. I hope they will do something with the characters for the next game, I don't think I can take any more stupid elevator scenes.

P.S. Why would they add stealth in this game?

This game is not awful, so I feel conflicted giving it a 4/10, but personally I couldn't get into it. It's not utter garbage, and I like the premise, graphics, and even the gameplay of it, but despite all that, it did not butter my croissant.

2023, and they haven't fixed their game yet. The enemy spawn is so broken, your sister walks weird asf in coop. AND this thing doesn't have checkpoints!
    (dialogues are so cringe.)

Do not waste your time with this game.
Poor dialogues, no checkpoints, a lot of bugs and repetitive missions.

As a budget, somewhat unambitious retooling of the Wolfenstein engine, Youngblood offers impactful shootouts that showcase some truly brilliant guns. Yet by aiming for co-op grind, this offshoot loses the charm of BJ’s blasters. A slight misfire, then, but the sisterly slaughter on display still has its moments. [Issue#181, p.75]

The story brings a satisfying conclusion, and there are plenty of Nazis to kill once more, which in turn makes for another enjoyable Wolfenstein experience.

In the end, Youngblood is a budget priced spinoff that works in the gameplay department just like the previous games, but lacks in a lot of other areas. I would suggest it to players that have a co-op partner to play with and with the Deluxe Edition, a co-op pass code is available. Even then, players may find themselves burned out on this one much faster than the mainline games that came before it.
