Vaporum can be a little on the difficult side at times, the fun and enjoyment present in the decent amount of exploration, puzzles and items at your disposal makes you forget about the high difficulty and quickly immerses you into the game. The dungeon crawler genre fits this games style, is to defeat enemies while progressing and obtaining loot along the way. There’s a ton of variety present in the enemies you face and the loot or items you can collect along your adventure. Defeating enemies feels rewarding and add in the intricate level of puzzles, means the gameplay stays interesting enough throughout your experience. The presentation in the audio and visuals is full of atmosphere and really give the game the feel that you'd expect in this story. Vaporum doesn’t get much wrong and this makes the game a decent addition to your Xbox One library. If you’re a fan of this genre of games, then I’m sure you’ll find something here that satisfies. If you're not a fan of the genre you may find yourself a little let down simply not being a fan. At the end of the day I think most people will either enjoy Vaporum, while it's not the best dungeon crawler out there it does much more right, than it does wrong. Expand

Overall a standard old school RPG. The story is pretty good. The combat is what you'd expect. The RPG elements are pretty weak given that it is a short game.

Overall a standard old school RPG. The story is pretty good. The combat is what you'd expect. The RPG elements are pretty weak given that it is a short game.

The biggest complaints I have against this game are the achievements and the puzzles. The puzzles in most cases are pretty straightforward to figure out. But there are a couple that are completely guess based such that you really wouldn't have any way to figure them out logically. What's worse is that some folks asked in the forums about it and the devs said they too discussed whether it was a bad puzzle but left it in anyway. So the devs knew a couple of the puzzles were not great but they decided not to change them.

The same thing with a couple of the achievements. There are 2 that are basically impossible to get and a couple more are highly unlikely because they are RND based and the chances plummet each time. Again the devs were asked and they responded with "that is why they are achievements". Yet if you look at the % completed for the cheevos it's really low. Clearly there is a problem. But perhaps the most frustrating achievements are the "complete in 90 mins" and "don't take X dmg on the hardest difficult". Nobody on all of XBox has unlocked them. Nobody. When asked about it by the devs they admitted that only 1 person on the entire team had ever done it and they were someone who played it over and over again and they barely did it. So the devs purposefully put in an achievement that is pretty much impossible to get. They said they'd adjust it if it proved too difficult and they never did. When game devs build a game and don't listen to feedback I have a hard time giving them my money in the future.

Overall a reasonable game for the money but questionable decisions by the devs makes me reconsider whether I will purchase another of their games or not.

Imperfect controls and other minor annoyances aside, Vaporum is a very enjoyable dungeon-crawler. Its insistence on tile-based movement results in battles that are decided by a rather peculiar dance. Sometimes it takes quite a few steps just to create an opening in the enemy's defences. To add to this, every decision, no matter how slight, carries weight. An action as simple as turning around can leave the player in a difficult position. It's almost as if one has to adopt a sixth sense, just to keep track of where enemies are going. Provided you give your best effort, then you are sure to be rewarded. Altogether, this is a very impressive effort that's well worth anyone's time.

While Vaporum does post some entertaining puzzles, they quickly become more of a change of pace tactic than actually something worthwhile. This sad reality combined with the previous disappointments and letdowns means that in all good conscious, I cannot recommend purchasing this game for $24.99 when you can get better dungeon crawlers for less money. When your game thrives on a quality story and entertaining gameplay mechanics, and both of those areas become lackluster and suffer, thus hindering the enjoyment, then it's time to move on. Vaporum may be set in a steampunk environment, but the game itself ran out of steam.
