ToeJam & Earl, ahhh... I remember the nostalgia of the original game back in 1991 because it was one of my favorite games on the Sega Genesis. I remember the nostalgia of the original game back in 1991 because it was one of my favorite games on the Sega Genesis. I remember the laughs the enjoyment the original game would gave me. Again laughed with the newest entry in the series, thanks to the as always wacky visuals and sound design. There are minor technical issues every now as I'm sure they were also there in the original before I use to notice such things. I quickly forgot to notice these issues, thanks to the very fun gameplay when played with a friend truly shines through. It’s also fun when played on your own as well and there’s more than enough content to keep you interested, I just preferred playing it co-op with a friend. Whether you chose to play alone or with a friend is the perfect balance of being fun and challenging at the same time. If like me you’re a fan of the franchise then you’ll thoroughly enjoy what ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove has to offer, because it stays true to the fans and it offers you a ton of fun and enjoyable moments throughout. Two Thumbs up and a recommendation for fans and newcomers alike. Expand

Maxing the score to offset the review bombers (why do people do that, anyway?). Back in the Groove is every bit as great as the original game on the Genesis, and better in many ways. It's ridiculously fun and endlessly replayable. Even the price is right!

The original ToeJam and Earl is a pretty good microcosm of the early 1990s, complete with its aesthetic roots in hip-hop culture. HumaNature has successfully brought the duo into 2019 with a thorough update that maintains that same aesthetic, while adding in more up-to-date components. For the uninitiated, the game will feel … um, “fresh” … while old-school gamers will have plenty of nostalgia combined with new references everyone will get. With the holiday season upon us again, having this game handy for party guests would amp up any gathering. You’ll have to provide your own carrot suit, however.

Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove was everything I wanted from a modern revisit to the series — it’s bright, it’s funky, and it has an obvious love for the past with modern twists. The single and local components are great and the experience holds up well. That said, those looking for online co-op may want to look elsewhere.

A short, funky old-school nostalgia trip that fails to fulfil its potential.
