    Thunder Paw on Xbox One looks like a game from the mid-90s. Unfortunately, it plays like one too. At its core, it’s a run and gun platformer that doesn’t succeed at either. The platforming is too simple to be fun and the combat is horrible. When it isn’t mind-numbingly easy, it’s ridiculously frustrating.

    Thunder Paw is a simple platformer, and that’s about it. You shouldn’t go into it expecting something more. It’s your basic run and gun that doesn’t bring much to the table. The one boss fight after each of the stages changes things up but it doesn’t fully redeem itself with its weird gun mechanics and stale gameplay. Visually the game was enjoyable and it speaks to me but when it came down to the gameplay the game decided to roll over and play dead permanently.

With a simple yet cute story. You play as Thunder, a dog who was out playing with his ball when his parents got kidnapped. Now armed with a gun you must kill every enemy on each level to progress and bring them back. Visually the game is not detailed however this is not such a bad thing as it didn't detract from the game at all and the work put in to the enviroment makes up for it. Thunder Paw is a simple jump and shoot style, using platforms and lifts to traverse the map hunting down each enemy to progress to the next level. Also finding the gun upgrade box allowing access to a 2nd gun type to aid in your quest. I persinally felt the 2nd gun is aimed more at the boss fights rather than regular level enemy fights (although can be handy in some situations) and switching guns is really simple. That said I find the range of the main gun annoyingly short at times and unsuited to boss fights that can be hard enough at times without needing to rely on the 2nd bouncy ball gun. For the achievement hunters this is ine of those coveted 1000 gamerscore games, requiring you to beat 2 bosses and find the hidden boxes over 12 levels (not too difficult) HOWEVER i was plesently surprised to find (as is often the case) the game carried on after the final achievement so the game is not as short as those make it out to be.… Full Review »

    Thunder Paw you play as Thunder a dog that was out in the wild and heard a loud explosion. He runs home to find out his parents have been kidnapped so he begins his journey to rescue them. It's a fairly simple idea you must just make your way through out the levels destroying every enemy to advance to the next level. There are four different worlds each with a different looking background like cave or snow. Each world is made up of 5 levels, and at the end of the fifth you fight a really adorable and unique animal boss. Each of them have different attacks, and patterns you must learn to defeat them. All though the bosses have a lot of variety the enemies do not. You basically face the same ones over and over.
    I enjoyed the retro appeal though , it looks , sounds, and feels very much like a Sega Genesis title of the 90's. The sprites are all adorable and fit really well into the classic looking areas. The music is very fitting as well. It lends a classic sound to each level. I enjoyed most of my time with Thunder, and his world but wish there was a little more to it in the end. It doesn't leave much as far as replay in my opinion. Would been cool to had some collectibles that enabled you to customize Thunder some what. It is without question worth a play, but I'm glad the price is so low because I doubt you play it again after finishing it or collecting your Achievements/Trophies.
    Speaking of Achievements i think you can collect them all in under a hour. They are mostly for just finding the hidden item in the first 12 levels. They can be missed, but you can reload each level and find them again. Most though are pretty obvious, and you will find while just looking for the enemies to end the level. Ratalaika delivers again on what they have established them self as. Affordable, Easy Achievements, and fun. There aren't a lot of games out there under 5 dollars at launch and they do it weekly. I've enjoyed covering their large library usually a game a week. It has also added a lot to my gamer score, and to thousands of others out there I'm sure.

    Like I said in the review for three dollars and ninety-nine cents it's going to give you a pretty entertaining evening while adding to your trophies or achievements. Ratalaika gets the point that some times you just want something short and sweet, especially with people with backlogs like I'm currently looking at.    … Full Review »
