Everything about the presentation side of the game screams retro and without a doubt I fell in love with both the visuals and sound design immediately. The easy to pick up and play style means that everybody can have fun playing and it also gives the game an addictive side to it as well. Even though there isn’t a huge amount of content available to you The VideoKid still offers you good value for your money and you’ll no doubt be satisfied. Technically the game holds up really well and everything does what it’s supposed to do which in the end keeps frustration at bay and keeps things fun as well.
There are plenty of retro references dotted throughout the world and the humour present does bring back a lot of fond memories. The difficulty may be off-putting for some because it can spike out of nowhere from time to time. There isn’t tons of variety present in the gameplay so you will find it a tad repetetive every now and then. Does The VideoKid do enough to get a recommendation from me? If you liked Paperboy back in the day then you will thoroughly love what The VideoKid has to offer. Retro screams through in every aspect of the game and I must admit that it was very nice being taken down memory lane because the reference to 80’s and 90’s items has been done extremely well. One of the things that really stands out in this game is that it features an easy to pick up and play style which means everybody can enjoy what this game has to offer. Don’t let that fool you though because the game can be quite unforgiving at times and the difficulty will no doubt cause you to experience a few frustrating moments. I would however recommend that you get past these frustrating moments though because the nostalgic moments that are present are well worth seeing and you’ll also be pleased to know that the game handles itself extremely well when it comes to the technical side of things, and in the end it handles itself extremely well in most areas as well which means it does more than enough to get a recommendation from me.

The Videokid is a game that gets us back to the 80's in a very funny way.

All in all and The VideoKid ticks all of my boxes for a great game. It’s a fond look back at a bygone age, with all the best references cherry picked and presented for your gaming pleasure.

The Videokid is a simple yet competent take on Paperboy’s core design, complete with shed loads of cameos and references from the 80s and early 90s. The gameplay loop can indeed become frustrating when errors occur outside of player control, grouped with its steep difficulty curve, but for the most part, this is a well developed experience that achieves much of what it sets out to accomplish.
