Been playing video golf since the early 90's (Links) on just about every console and PC and I can honestly say without a single doubt that this is the BEST game of golf, mechanically, that I have ever had the pleasure of playing. I was very hesitant to purchase after seeing some of the user reviews but I am so glad I bit the bullet and got this game. I have played it every day since I got it for at least 3-4 hours each time. The golf course creator is a whole other element that is amazing in and of itself but for now I can't stop playing "one more round" to really delve too deep into that area of the game. All I can say is that if you even remotely enjoy video golf, buy this immediately. Yes you will miss the career mode, yes you will miss not seeing your player "develop" but honestly these are extras I'm sure will come. As is right now this game is a blast and will definitely give you your golf fix. I guarantee you'll enjoy it and probably love it. Expand

This game IS NOT Tiger Woods. with that out of the way, you have to know what you are buying. think SimGolf meets Minecraft with a simple approach to the mechanics of golf.

The Course Creator(10/10): it is why a majority of buyers will jump on board. you can spend as little or as much time as you can imagine on any given hole. always wanted to tweak TPC Sawgrass' 17 island green? you can recreate it and modify it until your heart is content. tired of everyone hitting the fairways with ease, narrow them down, put 50 bunkers, put a stream down the middle, put trees jutting out into the fairway. if you can imagine a hole design, then you can create it. what is great is that as you are building a hole, you can quickly play the hole and then jump right back into the editor, helps when testing out yardages and the likes. you can even quickly play from a specific spot on your hole so you don't have to tee off on the hole, just place your ball at point X and play from there.

Gameplay(9/10)now the game play is smooth and basic. no swing meters, no landing circle telling you that your driver will land in this specific area or that applying X amount of loft will make the ball trajectory clear the tree line. you have a camera fly-over that gives you the general area you are aiming towards and you have an overhead map that provides yardages on the hole you are on. putting is probably the most true to feel of all the aspects of gameplay. you can read the green and generally decide your aim, then its about providing a smooth clean putt. there is no putt meter or "putt preview". my missed putts usually felt wrong the moment I made contact... rather than "oh man I only hit it 68% instead of 80%"

the graphics(6/10): they are not great, they are early last-gen. things look pretty from a distance and as a whole but when you are playing a round you will see the flaws. this game was never about being the best looking golf game out there.

replayability(10/10): this is the key, you don't have licensed anything much less courses so you have to understand that you will be playing user created courses. that being said, by launch there were already thousands of courses created. you can search by top rated, style, difficulty, courses friends have played, courses friends have created, etc. so you could play a different course everyday and never repeat. it also helps that the course publishing is cross-platform so you can share courses with PS4 and PC players, I imagine the PC players will create the best courses over time. unfortunately scores do not cross platforms.

so understand that you are not buying a game competing with EA Golf(Tiger Woods), you are buying a game that brings you a robust course creator and a solid golf simulator with last gen graphics.

for $34.99, this game is a 9/10 but you have to know what you are buying. if you just want to jump in and play 20 courses with a real golfer and real clubs and outmuscle every designed hazard, skip this. if you want to create your own golf course where par is actually par, or play other peoples creations that are growing by the thousands across 3 platforms daily then pick this up.

Pros: Only golf sim on Xbox One, a course creator that has its flaws but some courses come off really well, difficult ( Anytime I see scores of -20 on an 18 hole round I immediately tune out knowing that some geeks have manipulated the games mechanics. In TGC Ive seen -20 but w/ constant new courses the idea of competition based on skill, rhythm and feel seems more plausible than other games.) You're supporting small guys!!!! F@#! The Big Boss Man....games for us by us. That's how TGC feels. Its "our" game. The Grateful Dead played some crappy concerts but if you dig hard enough you'll find gems that surpass what you thought live music could ever be. Same idea here. Go HB !

Cons: Ok the graphics kinda suck. Tons of bugs. The game doesn't feel polished. Course creator can stall, hard to get a feel for the competitions.

Verdict: An awesome game. I hope its a new trend. If we support pioneers like this we can help usher in a new era of games that will be far more satisfying. They actually need your support. The big corporate A Holes want your money. They'll keep rehashing the same crap as long as there is profit to be made. With these HB guys I get a feeling I'm supporting something meaningful. I'm giving it an 8...only because the graphics and bugs. Some solid patching would bring it to a 9.

Additionally, there are still some slowdown issues where the cameras chug along, and others where the animation speed of the golfer doesn't keep up with what you're doing with the thumbstick very well. It's a bit surprising that it's suffering from occasional slow fps - depending on the course you're playing. If you choose a course with fewer objects on it, you'll be able to keep the frame rate at a playable level.

In spite of its graphical appearance and performance shortcomings, it still plays a good game of golf, overall, provided you're playing a course the game can handle comfortably. There are plenty of good courses to choose from that will play smoothly and at least look presentable. The ghost play method for having someone to play against is a recorded round of another player, You can choose not to know the score of the other player as you're selecting from a list of ghost player rounds to play against. I'm getting a kick out of this part of the game.

You can also choose to play against a live player, taking turns like real golf. It seems to lag a bit if you're using XBL's party chat to talk to the player you're going up against. You'll hear what your opponent has to say about his shot a good while before you actually see it happen on the screen. It's almost better not to talk to them as you play because of this?

The Golf Club is the only real golf game we have on the XB1 and for now, it will give you some real golfing like thrills, but will also bug you with its pitching game, which feels a bit like throwing darts. The developer says they will be upgrading it as time passes. They've already fixed some serious server lag issues in the first couple of days, so I say give 'em a chance to tune this game up and make it more playable. It's a shame it couldn't hit 1080p though. I think that would make it a different level of game and would have bumped my score up to at least an 8.

This game is great! It's just like real golf. Driving and irons are a little too easy, but the short game is a challenge. I'm glad it does not try to simulate real pros and waste time with "drama". You just make shots for a half hour. Also golf is simple enough not to involve too many buttons at once.

I was really excited for this game, based largely off of the youtube videos and description of the game by the developer themselves. Big mistake. I feel like the pre-release videos of this game border on "deceptive" and are, at the very least, "misleading."
The graphics look like Playstation 1 era graphics. As soon as i saw the first flyover of my first hole, I noticed all kinds of jagged lines, texture glitches, just generally low level graphics. I would strongly suggest looking at twitch streams or post-release vids of this game if your only look at it was from pre-release youtube videos, which were EXTREMELY misleading about the end-result graphics quality.
The sound... my god, the sound. Every time i press a button on the menu (besides having to wait 5-10 seconds for the button press to register) i hear an awful clipping/buzz/pop sound, and it gets worse/louder after each consecutive course played, or so it seems to me. Beyond audio glitches, the actual sound effects are almost non-existent. Besides the boring ambient insect noises and the dull drone of the "announcer", your ears won't be receiving any sort of stimulation from this game.
The gameplay itself... just feels so boring. I get that it's an indie game with an indie budget, but don't try to pass off poor design decisions, likely made under budget or time constraints, as some sort of purist, high-road excuse to omit standard features under the guise of simulating a real-world golf experience. I get that most golfers don't have crowds of people lining the fairway, cheering on every stroke in real life, but this game feels like an episode of the Twilight Zone where our main character awakens to discover that everyone in the world has vanished (except for the world's most boring golf announcer) and decides to go play a round of golf. There could be the occasion passerby or maybe even a fellow golfer, but there isn't. The worst part is, even if i'm playing with live friends, as opposed to the default ghost mode, i only ever see the golf balls flying through the air. Not once will you ever see another golfer while playing this game. The "social" aspect of this game, one of the features i was most excited about, even in LIVE mode... is still just me playing a course that my friend happens to be playing at the same time, where if we happen to be close to each other i might see his ball flying through the air, but more than likely we will end up on different holes within that course and barely see each other's balls at all (giggle).
The developers and their fake-positive-review cronies, who are really easy to spot, keep trying to justify the lack of polish on this game by claiming that it's simulating a real-world golf experience, but ultimately it IS a game, and it's a really boring and poorly designed game. The developers could have a career, unlocks, or customization options available in a game without sacrificing their claim to realism, but instead we are stuck with the absolute minimum of features allowed to be still considered a golf game.

That's the gyst of this game. It is absolutely the most minimal game experience i have ever played. Having a course creator is great, but if i still don't have fun playing on the courses after they've been created, what is the point. It's like giving me a truckload of expensive tools or a case full of cosmetics and glitter and asking me to enjoy the experience of polishing a turd, even though I'm still just stuck with a piece of **** at the end of the day.

Never have I wanted a refund for a game as bad as I did after playing this game for a couple days, hoping to find redeeming qualities.

Yes, its first day, but framerate and Graphics are right out bad. Only default Clubs, clothes and distances, so as expected way off Tiger Woods/EA. No "Upgrades", clothes or Equipment for sale.

Gameplay can be good and its all about feel. You change Clubs/shottype as you like and hit every shot With 100% Power easy, but fades/draws are in play. When it comes to putting its hard. Mainly because you dont have any idea how hard to pull/push stick untill you try, cause there is no indicator or meter etc. With some practice I can see this beeing closer to real life "feel" of golf, but mostly everything else is a letdown. Hardcore golfers who only care about the pure game of golf might enjoy the New refreshing way of "feel" when you putt, but most of the game is "flat" and boring. There is no career or anything you normally see, so you get the feeling that something(important) is missing from the game.

This game is not ready for release, runs poorly on next gen consoles, and doesn't come close to simulating golf. As noted in the official reviews, it's a course designer (that takes about 15 seconds to refresh after every action) with a straight shot mechanic glued onto it. They made putting hard and nonintuitive so that it takes longer to shoot -20. Don't worry, you'll be able to once you figure out how to not putt and just chip in instead.

The online play does tend to stutter and suffers from slight lag, and there are issues with the friend list component. But I rarely play online competitively so this doesn't affect my playtime.

Great idea, but poor appearance and approach hinder the devs from executing what they set out. I love the idea of a sim game or even just an EA competitor. This game really, really surprised me. I picked it up for "free" on the Xbox Game Pass trial and it's the exact sort of game to use that membership for. From the outside looking in this looks like a great idea but it could have easily been poorly implemented however as regards to being a pure Golf simulator I think this game got it more right than any before it. From the outside looking in this looks like a great idea but it could have easily been poorly implemented however as regards to being a pure Golf simulator I think this game got it more right than any before it. Now that's not to say it is as good as peak Tiger Woods but those were different games, yes they were about Golf but they were more "arcade" golf so to speak. Anybody that has actually played gold in real life will tell you how unrealistic Tiger Woods was; the ability to place the ball on a dime pretty much anywhere whilst applying all sorts of post shot "boost" and spins is fun but not representative of the actual experience.

TGC manages to capture the sport very well. There are no big overlays showing you where your putts will go or shots will land, they leave that for you to experiment and figure out and sometimes even with the best laid plans a shot will take a bad bounce or hit the green too fast and go awry. That's very much how the sport works in the real world and it's really well implemented into this game.

Personally I feel the game looks beautiful. Graphically it's okay and it has to be said that your avatar isn't the most hi-res or customizable thing out there but the courses by and large look wonderful and the idea of custom designed courses makes for some stunning examples of course design for a golf buff. Not having a licence for anything was going to make this game sink or swim and thanks to some clever design by the makers on the official courses and the community attempts this ends up being a big plus for the game. Courses are varied and challenging without feeling unfair and it was a genuine pleasure to play through them.

That's really the games strength it makes you want to play "Just one more round" and see what else it can offer you, it really gets that "lightening in a bottle" feeling of elation when you hit one close, sink a long putt or hole out. It feels very relaxing to play and that again speaks wonders to them getting the feeling of playing golf right. You take your time and take it all in, the sounds of nature and the smack of the club against ball it is very minimally sound designed but that is sort of the point. There are a few chilled out tracks that play in menus but really it is on the whole a very calming experience.

I'd like to take a second to point out a feature not many touched on in their use of the caddy/announcer "John". They made the step of having the announcer discussing your play/the weather/this particular hole be almost...friendly? It's hard to explain but it comes across as though the dude is just playing a chilled out round with you and passing comment in a naturalistic way. He never really chastises you or gets annoying despite a kind of small pool of comments. I just thought it was a brilliant design choice to have him be on your level and friendly. They could have not had an announcer at all or worse had them be annoying/critical or try for some weird personality or niche. As such it's pretty sweet taking in a round with your buddy "John" shooting the breeze about this particular fictional courses foibles and green speeds and such. It's a part of the game I very much enjoy.

If I were to criticize there are very few bells and whistles to the experience which is good in a purist way and bad for depth. Your avatar can't be customized much, you can't change your ball or clubs or upgrade stats or anything. It is clear that it is intentionally left out to make it a level playing field and more about the golf gameplay itself but it does lack a little depth there but of course depth is available in spades by the sheer number (tens of thousands user created about 36 officially created) of courses. It feels trite to criticize because what is there is very good but it is quite a bare bones experience.

You need to know what you are getting with this game before you head in. It's not Tiger Woods or any other golf game. It stands alone as a true representation of the sport, there is no other game that captures the beauty, elation and frustration of the game like TGC. Anybody who plays themselves should definitely pick this up because they will definitely "get" what the makers were going for. Anybody who expects Tiger Woods with custom courses will be bitterly disappointed and turned off by the difficulty. The game does not hold your hand whatsoever and it takes time, course knowledge and a little luck to get a good round in, just like real life.

This is probably the most surprised I have been by a game in a long while and if you go in with your eyes open and don't mind the lack of branding or flashy bells and whistles then this is probably the most pure and accurate depiction of golf in a video game and has a ton of replay value to keep you coming back again and again.

The fact that we can say that true fans of golf who are looking for a new challenge might well have found their new home in spite of those technical issues, is a testament to how brave and revolutionary the game really is.

Real golfers will love the challenge, and the course design feature is a trump card. However, it won't give the average user much of a buzz. [Issue#116, p.83]

The Golf Club is a game that relies on friends and the social aspects of gaming. The golfing itself is hardly interesting, as there is nothing to collect and to be fair: a bit of a boring sport like golf does not get much nicer by playing The Golf Club.
