Not many people haven’t experienced Tempest in some shape or form and that shows to me just how prominent Tempest has been in regards to the gaming industry. Year’s ago they took a simple idea and turned it into a very fun and addictive experience to be played by all and every now and then they release a new shiny version for you to get to grips with. The new version of the game is called Tempest 4000 and even though it has a few shortcomings to say once again I enjoyed my time with a new version of Tempest would be quite the understatement. Once again the gameplay is simple but very addictive and this easy to pick up and play style means gamers of all skill levels and ages can join in the fun, which is great. In terms of content the game will keep you satisfied for quite a while, but I would recommend that you wait till it drops in price a little because at the moment in my opinion it’s a little bit too expensive. Another reason why I would recommend for you to wait till it lowers in price is because there isn’t really anything new that veterans of the series won’t have seen before. That being said the content that is here has been done to perfection and it will provide you with plenty of enjoyable moments. You’ll pleased to know then that technically Tempest 4000 doesn’t suffer with any problems at all. The controls remain tight and responsive throughout your time with the game and everything else also plays out the same way which limits frustration quite a lot. This is a very good thing because the game does get very difficult quite quickly, but even though the game can be overly difficult at times I still didn’t find myself getting frustrated that much. Instead I found myself returning to the game time and time again and the addictive nature of the game is clear to see from the get go. Defeating enemies never seems to get dull and when you defeat a number of different enemies at the same time you always end up getting a very satisfying feeling. Without a doubt the most noticeable improvement over the original game’s is the presentation side of things. Tempest has never looked and sounded better and in a way the improved visuals and sound design do make the gameplay even more fun and immersive. At the end of the day if you’re a fan of the Tempest series then you will thoroughly enjoy what Tempest 4000 has to offer. It may not get everything right but what it does do is provide you with a fun and very addictive experience that never seems to dwindle throughout your time with the game. Expand

A stonking update for a forgotten classic, complete with all new bells and [rave] whistles. [October 2018, p.88]

Diehard Tempest fans will no doubt really enjoy it for its abstractness, colorful and psychedelic visuals, and beat inducing soundtrack, but if you’re not part of my generation and grew up with titles like this, I don’t feel there’s going to be much appeal or appreciation for games like Tempest 4000.

Overall I was disappointed in Tempest 4000. I enjoy playing Tempest games, but this one managed to make the core game less enjoyable rather than improving on it or providing a truly fresh take on the gameplay. Arcade game fans will be best off saving their quarters for the next version of Tempest that comes along.
