There are a few build/sim games on the Xbox One now and even though they aren’t my favourite games in the whole world they do provide me with some enjoyment when done right. Surviving Mars is without a doubt the most mysterious game I’ve played in this specific genre and I must admit that I did enjoy my time with the game despite its apparent shortcomings. In order to enjoy this game to the fullest you have to put up with a few dreary hours at the start. The tutorials seem to go on forever and at times I felt like turning the game off, but in the end I’m glad I didn’t. The gameplay after them boring hours is absolutely brilliant and when everything syncs together you end up having a very immersive and rewarding experience. There are many stories for you to get to grips with in this game and each one is a mysterious tale that makes you want to carry on, which is great. These different stories keep things fresh which is very important because there is a huge amount of content for you to sink your teeth into. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the game has an almost endless amount of replayability and the best thing is that it takes a while for things to become boring again. I will say though that the game does provide you with quite a few frustrating moments along the way and you will no doubt fail a few times during your playthrough. I was however able to look past these frustrating moments in the end and that was mainly down to addictiveness of the game, but I definitely would have liked a little more help every now and then. My biggest gripe with the game was without a doubt the awkward controls. The controls can be incredibly infuriating at the start and I still don’t feel fully comfortable with them, which is a shame. In my opinion they’ve got the presentation side of the game spot on. They’ve managed to do a wonderful job of capturing a sci-fi atmosphere and the visuals and sound design combine together extremely well throughout your time with the game. At the end of the day I appreciate some of the ideas that have been implemented in Surviving Mars and in some ways some of these elements have a unique feeling to them. Unfortunately though the shortcomings the game has stop it from reaching its full potential and these issues will definitely be off-putting for some. That being said if you’re a fan of sci-fi and you like building your own city then you will find a lot of things that tickle your fancy in Surviving Mars. Expand

Surviving Mars surely doesn't lack charm and depth. Dedicated gamers will be pleased to establish a massive colony. Others will probably look for a more structured and organized game.

A busy, challenging, and intriguing take on the city-building genre. [May 2018, p.86]

Ideally, players should try to experience Surviving Mars on the PC, but the Xbox One version is a fine substitute. In any case, they are treated to a very impressive simulator that rewards expert resource-management. The emphasis on automated drones helps to streamline all of the menial tasks, leaving players plenty of time to focus on constructing the perfect colony. Of course, the game features a steep learning curve, but there's always something new to learn.
