Super Space Serpent: Secondary Edition reminds me of geometry wars. I'm a massive fan of twin-stick shooters as it's a genre that usually challenges and reminds me of those nostalgic moments as a child. Starting my gaming career at pong, you can imagine how many twin sticks I’ve played over the years so I did have a great deal of interest in Super Space Serpent: Secondary Edition. The good news? It's actually quite a decent game and the retro vibes that are present remind me of geometry wars which is a good thing indeed. The game is all about defeating enemies in waves and to help you progress you get a decent amount of weapons and upgrades which are picked up at random by a drop that scales 1-6 and the power up or distraction is variable. The game features a retro neon art style and sound design you’ll find it difficult to spot some of your enemies which I feel is intentional in the earlier levels the pink enemies can disappear into the background but they aren't much of a problem if you're good with these types of games. The shooting elements are strong but only offers 45 levels, which I spoke to the developer in regards to, and he is looking into the inclusion of an endless mode in the future. Fans of these this genre will definitely find something in Super Space Serpent: Secondary Edition, because it gets the most important aspects correct, even though Super Space Serpent: Secondary Edition has a few minor imperfections it still makes for a must buy in this most legendary genre of twin-stick shooters. Super Space Serpent SE is a homage to a magical and yet crazy era in video games, but even so it lacks the mechanical subtleties and polish of similar games that are three decades older. The music is certainly an enjoyable aspect, but the visuals are certainly not going to be for everyone.

Super Space Serpent SE is a really addictive retro style arcade game, in which we take the controls of a small ship and try by all means to survive for a minute to a stage full of enemies.

This, at very best, is a decent take on the arcade days of old. It’s a game in which you’re merely dropped into progressively difficult bouts of twin-stick shooting mayhem. Nothing more, and nothing less. Whilst appealing more to the hardcore player than the casual player, and despite a very straightforward structure, some poor design choices, and a few localisation issues, Super Space Serpent SE really isn’t half bad.
