    This is one middle of the road puzzler, that just so happens to be powered by the luck of the rogue-like draw.

    Subaeria could have been fun if it wasn’t for the atrocious loading times, the poor controls, the tedious hit detection and the awkward camera angle. The whole experience just screams of wasted potential, offering up a slapdash game in place of something more refined and better developed. Putting its decent art style to the side, Subaeria simply hasn’t been constructed well enough to merit a recommendation.

    Subaeria interested me from the moment I first saw it and that’s because it seemed different from the usual roguelike formula that we’ve comeSubaeria interested me from the moment I first saw it and that’s because it seemed different from the usual roguelike formula that we’ve come to see in many games over the years. Thankfully this different approach breathes new life into the genre in my opinion and in some ways it made the game even more enjoyable. Each different mechanic in the game works together really well and when the game gets into full flow you end up having a lot of fun. My favourite element about the game were the puzzles. Each puzzle that has been implemented has been designed extremely well and I appreciated the strategy side to the puzzles. Some puzzles require quite a lot of thought to complete and without a doubt you get a great sense of achievement once you complete them. Whilst taking on these puzzles you will also have to deal with some platforming along the way and this can be fun at times, but traversing can be a little problematic at times. Don’t get me wrong there aren’t any major problems here it’s just that the platforming side of the game can be a little awkward at times and that can deliver a few problems to you. Thankfully though you end up forgetting about these little problems and that’s a good thing because in terms of content the game has quite a bit for you to be getting on with. The content that’s present in the game has a lot of variety going for it and playing as each character is very worth it so you end up getting a great deal of value for your money. This content is also accompanied by a very good story and to say that it kept me invested throughout my time with the game would be a massive understatement. Each character has had a lot of thought and effort put into it and I liked that there are multiple endings because it gives the game quite a lot of replayability. Another thing you will notice as you progress through the game is the amount of upgrades you can get. Without a doubt the amount of upgrades there is will satisfy you a great deal and the best thing is that these upgrades actually feel like they matter. In terms of problems the game doesn’t have too many and my biggest gripe is probably the presentation side of the game. Don’t get me wrong it isn’t bad it’s just that the visuals and sound design fail to deliver any amazing moments and unfortunately everything here is just a little bit on the boring side. At the end of the day Subaeria has a number of different genre’s in play at the same time and the impressive thing is that for the most part every different style works flawlessly. I will admit that Subaeria surprised me quite a bit and in the end it’s one of my most favourite games I’ve played so far this year.… Full Review »
