Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san!: A River City Ransom Story, stay the corset by keeping track of the Kunio-kun, aka River City, series and all of its releases, including the American releases created for the western audience, since it began on the Famicon or Nintendo Entertainment System is quite the mix-pot. However, at the franchise’s heart is a brawler series featuring high school students that was originally created by Technos Japan and has since been taken over by Arc System Works. While spin-off River City Girls allowed Wayforward Technologies to come in and put a renewed twist on the series, including lots of charm in the process, the newest title in this series- Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san!: A River City Ransom Story is an in-house work that features very little of the charm, turning into a cheap-feeling experience that quickly lets any interest slip away. It's Small amount of hidden depth, a cheap final battle along with the messy attempt at a narrative, which is (not entirely Arc System Works with so many sources to blend in. It's pried appropriately and as a long time fan of the River City Ransom series it still managed to do just enough to keep me entertained. It won't be for everyone but for fans of the series and the appropriate price of admission, most fans of the series should have no trouble enjoying themselves on their Xbox One. Expand

Stay Cool, Kobayashi-San! A River City Ransom Story on Xbox One is an obscure and campy beat ‘em up adventure that is off-kilter even by the standards set by the River City franchise. It’s definitely an acquired taste, even for fans of the series and genre, but it’s still great to have such uniquely Japanese titles receive a worldwide release.

Old-school beat 'em up fans will surely have some fun with Stay Cool, Kobayashi-San! but its repetitive and random nature definitely makes it an ultimately tedious and frustrating experience.
