The game hooks you in right from the start. Everything they did, they did it well. All the very short mini games to complete some tasks are enjoyable and don't seem like a repetitious thing. Art style is amazing. Plus you can even hug the cat! Story is well done and well written. Conversations are never dull either.

Such a great game. There are no legions of undead to mow down. no min/max stats to be acquired, just beautiful hand-drawn graphics, simple and enjoyable game mechanics and a wonderful story. Played it on Game Pass first and I liked it so much I bought it on Steam just to throw the Dev's dome money.

Gloire au Game Pass ! ou plutôt au Turd Pass au vu de la quantité d'étrons indés qui sont proposés pour votre plus grand désespoir vidéo-pas-ludique... Such a cozy, sweet game. The monologes whenever you bring a soul to the bridge are all so touching. It can get a little repettive at times, but still worth as hell

As a management sim, Spiritfarer is an incredibly fun, clever and addicting open world experience. As a story, it's a heartbreaking masterpiece that's capable of reducing any non-sociopath to tears when it's time to say goodbye to each companion.

I quickly got into an enjoyable routine of preparing meals, hugging animals and building kitchens, homes, orchards etc on my ship. I also enjoyed being able to upgrade my ship to explore new areas or move faster. There were some issues though.

As the game progressed I found the animals on my ship could become more and more demanding. Asking for upgrades to their homes that required difficult to find materials. Or they would ask for a meal with hard to find ingredients. Suddenly I'd have to travel to the other end of the map to fish in a certain area, then build a windmill just to produce flour. And after finally preparing a meal the animal might decide they don't want it anymore. There were definitely times when I felt like the game was being dragged out unnecessarily. Also the ship moved very slowly and most of the speed upgrades aren't available until very very late in the game and required hard to find materials. So I spent a lot of time just waiting to arrive and although there were crops to water and animals to feed the long journeys still felt repetitive over time. My final complaint would be that the ending felt a bit sudden and anti climactic.

Overall spiritfarer was a very pleasant game to play through. It has some issues for sure but the incredible artwork, charming characters and mostly fun management system kept me engaged until the end.

The core gameplay itself is good, the art is beautiful, and the sprites well animated. But the game feels a bit like a bait and switch. I thought one of my main tasks would be ferrying people to the afterlife. Instead I've spent the last 10 hours accommodating 3-4 unlikable characters who won't leave my boat.

I'm just catering to their snobby attitudes and selfish whims, which makes me care less for them. They whine to me and seem to be my family members, but if we're related, why the heck am I human and these characters are animals? If there's a reason, this needs to be explained with some kind of in-game logic.
But I can't connect with them when their physical form makes no sense and their attitude stinks, so I just skip through their boring life problems.

My 11 year old daughter keeps asking how we can get the characters off the boat and send them to the afterlife. She doesn't like most of them. One of them is a deer that won't stop smoking. Why would you encourage smoking in a game that could easily be for ages 10 plus? Real good, developers.

And why do most people on the islands look like that yellow robot from Yo Gabba Gabba? XD
Except they turn into some kind of animal if they board my boat. This isn't explained either.

Apart from this, the core gameplay is pretty good so far and the art is beautiful. These factors keep me coming back. It's just a shame that the characters and their backgrounds are poorly implemented.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first saw this game announced I wasn't really that interested. Someone told me about the game and how good it was, so I had to try it. I went in with a "I'll give it five minutes to see what it's like" attitude. But as soon as I met my first spirit, I was hooked. The five minutes lasted a good few hours on the initial try out of the game.

This game is very emotional and beautifully sorrowful. The characters represented in the game have stories that will lead you to cry. I cried playing this game. A lot. Thunder Lotus knows how to tell a story and create lore for their game. You learn about every character you encounter and when it's fine for that final goodbye, you'll find yourself crying again.

It's a nice little management game on top of the emotional, beautiful story. I'm not usually a one for management games, but this keeps it simple for the most part. The minigames in the game are okay. They reward you with the in game currency and some items you need to craft certain items. I found a couple were a little frustrating, which is why I didn't give the game a 10/10, but as this is merely a story/character driven game, they were obviously put in as a slight change of pace, which I'm okay with. There is no threat or "bad guy" in this game, so don't expect to be fighting enemies.

The traveling in the boat back and forth to locations can be a little tedious, but fast travel does become available as well as upgrades to make the boat travel faster, so it becomes less of an issue down the line.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game, learning about the characters and the story and how beautifully it was told, despite the subject of it revolving around death and loss. The art is beautiful, the music sets the mood perfectly. It is definitely a game where you will find your favourite character and adore them until the end. I loved all the characters (I'd say bar one, but when you come to understand them, they fall into your favourites too), but there is that one final farewell that will hit you the hardest. If you don't cry at this game, then you have the emotions and empathy of a serial killer :P

I highly recommend this game. I went in a little sceptical. I came out loving it and blubbering. You may too.

A beautiful game that has its heart totally in the right place. At the very start I though it would be quite slow, but once the game is set in motion you will never be at a loss for things to do :-) The mix of heartfelt moments and rather silly humor is very well balanced, with enough options to set the balance in any way you like it.

If I have to name one negative, it would be that the controls can be a bit finicky at times. Jumping onto things, and hooking into things, can be a bit hit-and-miss, but in the end it did not take away from my enjoyment of the game.

The characters are so enticing, some of them so heartwarming, even the ones I didn't really like for the most part left a heavg impact upon their departure. Gameplay loop isn't too repetetive, though I found the resource minigames (Bright jelly, Pulsar ore, that sort of thing) weren't that high in replay value. Definitely one of my favourite games of all time, ten out of ten. Expand

Spiritfarer, in my book, is a strong contender for game of the year. I love the feel of the game, the graphics are gorgeous, and the narrative is incredibly engaging. The topic of death is sensitive, but it’s one many of us can connect with and Spiritfarer manages to strike the chords it needs to make that connection.
