The hacking mechanic is actually pretty clever and in some ways unique which of course means that the mechanic ends up bringing some fun to the gameplay. There are plenty of upgrades and unlockables for you to obtain along the way and these upgrades and unlockables do feel worth it to obtain. I really enjoyed the level design in the game because each level has quite a lot of variety present in them and there also a decent amount of environmental traps as well. The controls feel a little bit fiddly and awkward which can be a bit frustrating because they do cause you to experience some premature deaths. Whilst the gameplay can be fun I would still recommend that you play this game in short bursts because it does start to get repetetive quite quickly. During the later levels I did start to get frustrated quite a lot because the difficulty curve seemed to spike out of nowhere. The presentation side of the game is a little on the basic side and there isn’t much that stands out here. Does Socketeer do enough to get a recommendation from me? All in all the hacking mechanic hasn’t been done very much but when a game features it I’ve often felt that it’s been done really well and in a way it does give that said game a little bit of uniqueness. Socketeer is a game that features quite a lot of hacking elements and I’m pleased to say that these elements are pretty creative and fun, but despite them being well done the game unfortunately gets more wrong than it gets right. Don’t get me wrong the gameplay can be quite interesting and fun but if played for a while things start to become repetetive and frustrating as well. This is a shame because it’s core idea is quite clever and their is quite a bit of variety present in the upgrades and levels that are available to you, but in the end it just has too many niggling problems and I can only give it a very small recommendation because of this. The concept and originality is something that shows signs of promise, but with a lack of interesting content, simplistic and repetitive play, and no real reason to be doing any of it, there isn’t too much of Socketeer that you’ll be thinking back on fondly.

Socketeer is fun to begin with, I’ll credit it with that. The problem, however, is that the game is littered with cheap deaths and frustrating elements that punish you for merely being curious or even just slightly careless. This is an unforgivable design choice for a game that incorporates perma-death functionality and boasts hidden secrets. Enjoyable in short doses, yes, but even then you’re likely to leave annoyed.
